Passing through Scarborough around the STC, I had the urge to have some Thai food at a location with plenty of free parking. So I scanned my Yelp app to see what options were available in this area. The Thai Room looked interesting. It was a wise choice for casual dine in service. The service was friendly and quick. I indulged on a hot and sour soup with shrimp and their luncheon special of crispy beef, veggies and rice. The portions were bigger than expected. My soup was spicy and tasty with a good number of requested shrimp. My spicy beef included a good number of well cooked tasty crispy beef pieces along with some rice and veggies. No complaints this dish was better than most. On the way out I complemented the manager and waiter on their food quality. I even suggested that they should consider opening up a franchise in Barrie! read more

Recently, I have been on a quest to find a decent Thai place close to home. The ones near me aren't great, so I threw out the distance criterion. A couple of Sundays ago, I was browsing my Uber Eats app and found a deal on pad thai at Thai Room. You buy one and get one for free. I was running errands and needed some lunch. I placed an order for pickup and took my time driving over here. My order took twenty minutes to prepare. I used to spend a lot of time in this area of Scarborough, as I used to work up the road from here. Thai Room comprises a group of three eateries in a building. Next to Thai Room is Freshii, which I have dropped by in the past. Starbucks is on the other side of Freshii, which used to be Licks. The drive-thru still looks the same. I found a parking spot fairly close to Thai Room. I backed into a spot and walked in. A woman at the counter in the back said hi. I reciprocated and indicated that I had an Uber Eats order. She reached for it, handed it over to me, and hoped that I'd enjoy it. I thanked her and happily walked to my car. The plaza looks sad compared to how I remember it. I hope that more stores set up shop. Montana's is still closed after shuttering several years ago. Thankfully, Winners is still alive and kicking. I drove home and had a late lunch. I ordered the following items: - Vegetable spring rolls (BOGO for a grand total of four) - Thai Room's famous pad thai with chicken (BOGO) I started with the spring rolls. They were nicely stuffed with veggies and vermicelli noodles. They were crispy. The dipping sauce was nice. Not too sweet. Not boring. Just right. Each portion of pad thai was huge. It took me a few days to eat it all. The flavours were decent. I loved the tanginess of the tamarind that made up the sauce. The green onions were great. I loved the noodles. The chicken was white meat and was tender. This dish was still hot when I got home. I want to get some curry next time, which is typically what I order from a Thai eatery. The server was nice and offered recommendations on the menu. I had a Yelp 10% off offer and was able to redeem it. I got a littled turned off by the automatic 15% gratuity added to my bill. I'm not sure why I didn't expect much from Thai Room. Maybe because of its location in a mostly industrial area? Needless to say, my expectations were exceeded. I dropped in for a late lunch with a friend who works nearby. The lighting and decor were nicer than I expected. I have no idea where my perceptions came from. We ordered Spicy Noodles with Chicken and Malay Beef Curry. The servings were quite generous, especially for the price. Both dishes tasted very good but the beef could have been a little more tender. Scummy Uber eats sales technique. They put fried rice for 16.99 and say buy one get one free. But if you click on it, to buy the fried rice, you have to choose either veggie, chicken or beef. You can't skip this and if you choose veggie, it's +3, chicken is +4, and beef is +5. So really you're paying around 22/23 dollars which is the exact cost for two fried rice. I would recommend it if u want to try something that feels like a cross between Thai peanut Curry and an Indian curry. The thai-room friend rice, as its called, is good too. If the Thai Expresses of the world are the gold standards of Thai food in Toronto, expect Thai Room to limbo under this low bar. Expect food that taste Asian but not necessarily authentically Thai. It wasn't my preference to order from here but a colleague suggested we get take out for a work lunch and most of the items disappointed. The pad thai noodles were limp instead of having a proper chew. While it seems like the various stir fried veggie and meat dishes contained the regular Thai spices that you come to expect but the mix of it just didn't come out right. The food is not authentic Thai food by any means. I order Thai meat salad. But it came with green and red peppers in there and tasted completely weird. The whole fish with tamarind sauce on the side was not worth the money. Hardly any meat on the fish. Plenty of sauce but way too sour and didn't taste great. Pad Thai was too saucey for my liking. Beautiful atmosphere! Very welcoming, and great customer service as the waitresses kept checking up on us to make sure everything was good. The food was amazing! I'm a little trepidatious about my experience. Our waitress first off was very courteous and welcoming. Our order was taken promptly, there's lot of options in terms of the menu. Calamari as our starter, Crispy Beef, and Green Chicken Curry. One trick with the chicken curry is to request less vegetables inside so you're given a larger portion of chicken, otherwise the chicken portion is incredibly small... First time having calamari and it was crispy, not rubbery at all which is very common I've found with calamari. Everything tasted pretty good, but... I felt sick early morning after midnight. I'm not one to label a business for getting me sick after my food, but after having dinner, I experienced diarrhea and vomitting to the point where I couldn't hold down water. Symptoms cleared up after two days with some rest and lots of fluids. I've been suggested by friends that maybe it was just too much spice, however my tolerance for spicy food is pretty good. Not sure if they have MSG in their seafood? Personally not allergic to anything either. I've heard good things about Thai Room and I myself, enjoyed the flavours of the dishes. I'm not prepared to give this place a second chance at the risk of more stomach cramps and brutal trips to the washroom. Real damn shame. read more

I've been coming to this establishment since it first opened and have continued to be a regular costumer. The dining area and ambiance is nice. Its quiet and versatile for date night, friends, or casual family dinner. The service is also great and food arrives rather quickly. But I have to be honest, and admit that the Thai Rooms food falls under the category of "Thai-fusion restaurants" like Thai One or Thai Express because they do not serve authentic Thai food and they all have similar tastes in flavor. The Thai Room serves Indian/Thai Fusion dishes but their food still satisfies my Thai food craving. Their food is also on the better quality side of what you would expect from restaurants alike. I personally always order the Signature Pad Thai with their calimari. It has a tangy and sweet tomato/ shrimp paste base sauce and the dish definitely fills you up. (I can never finish this by myself). To balance the tangy and sweet Pad Thai I pair the dish with the savory, flavorful, and crispy calimari and it becomes a match made in heaven. Then to finish it off and cleanse the palate, I'll simply have a couple scoops of mango ice cream. I reccomend this place if you want a convenient quick Thai food fix. TIP: To get their best food experience it is better to dine in where the food especially the Pad Thai is piping hot and fresh. Their takeout is still as delicious but because of the rice noodles that they use, the noodles soak up all the sauce and dries up quickly. Also if the Pad Thai has been sitting or you plan to have left overs the next day, inside the container the noodles eventually stick and clump together as the sauce dries out. I've ordered the shrimp roll, which tasted like a vegetarian roll from fast food and "oops" I forgot to add my shrimp inside, so they put a cocktail shrimp. The price range is quite pricey for what you get, and you are probably better off going to Thai Express. Ordered the Pad Thai, Crispy Beef and Pineapple Fried Rice. Out of the entire order, the only thing we could eat was the pineapple fried rice. The Pad Thai was DISGUSTING, and despite my family and I starving, we absolutely could not eat it. Noodles were soggy, overcooked and drenched in an atrocious sauce. The sauce itself was also unappetizing because it just tasted like an incredibly sour ketchup. We ordered two trays of the Pad Thai and ate a third of one container before we decided to toss it in the garbage. The crispy beef was decent but for about $18 (you're forced to order a side of rice in order to purchase) it was definitely underwhelming. The place was quite nice! It was too bad I wasn't dining-in, but had a great take-out experience. The staff were friendly and I got a 10% discount off my order. But let's talk about the food! Being far from home, I had to order a bundle of tastes to try. From old menu photos I found they had a veggie stir fry dish that comes in an avocado peanut sauce. That sounded good to me, and while their new menu had it removed, the chef was still able to make it for me. Sweet! It was excellent served over white rice. The sauce was strongly peanut flavoured and there were actual chunks of avocado in there. Veggies were fresh. Next up we had the ginger chicken. Really nice flavour, not overly strong in ginger, which is good. I really liked the wood-ear fungus in the dish (I know, it sounds like a strange ingredient but it's really good mushroom). Last but not least, we had the very spicy (3 chili icons) Malay style curry chicken. Oh my my! This had such a beautiful kick, very flavourful, pungent, and mouth-watering. It went superbly well over white rice. Each dish was maxed out on the flavour levels, and surprisingly loaded with vegetables! I really felt we had a full and rounded meal. This place is so wonderful!!! Cute little spot in the Winners plaza and the food is AMAZING!!!! And super consistent. I've been there four times now, and I am for 4 for 4 ... not one bad experience!!!! As a vegetarian, they have so many options from pad thai, to curry, to udon noodles, roti etc. The best thing I've had so far are vegetable curry and the oodles of noodles. So good! Prices are reasonable, service is fast and food comes very quickly. It is a small space so I dont think its feasible to host more than 6ish people.
