Today is day 23 of the quarantine and my husband and I decided that we were ready for a nice thai menu so we called Thai Ruby and ordered two orders of chicken curry. Since we are in quarantine it was available for pick up. My husband and I went and picked it up. When we arrived the food was ready. We enjoyed two orders of chicken curry that was tremendous and it was a nice change. It broke up the monotony of the quarantine but we really enjoyed the chicken curry, the crisp vegetables and a wonderful sticky rice. We've been to Thai Ruby twice and both times has excellent service and great food. Paula was out waitress both times and she is super sweet and friendly. My husband, Sam, and I love Thai Ruby and have always had delicious meals there. Yesterday, for the first time, we went for lunch and the food was not only yummy as always but also inexpensive. I ordered what I normally order for dinner, Panang Chicken Curry and though the serving might have been a bit smaller, it still was ample and totally delicious. The serving staff are also so helpful and very polite, checking back with us to see if everything is all right and if we need something else. A great experience! read more

Excellent Thai. We went for lunch today and they have great lunch menu. Everything came with soup and a spring roll. I had the Penang curry. Hot on the spicy level, was very good. Our favorite restaurant for lunch. Great lunch prices, good size portions, comes with small soup, crab rangoon and Chinese donuts for dessert. Usually we order the softshell crab but change the sauce to one of the curries. I you want the curry hot, you need to specify, otherwise it comes mild. We've also had the chicken curry and a number of other menu items . . . always very good. But the softshell crab is the best. read more

There are authentic Thai restaurants, found, in my experience and like all ethnic restaurants, where you have a large immigrant population, necessary to hold the restaurant to standards. For Thai that tends to be in places like NYC, San Francisco, LA, and Vancouver. And then there are "thai" restaurants that simply serve an oriental style cuisine tending towards Thai spices, etc, where the food still quite good. This place is neither. It couldn't be further from authentic and what is left is bland and unremarkable. Everything kind of tastes the same. All of the meats are way overlooked. I asked for my green curry to be very hot but what I got barely registered on the scoville scale. After "dining" at several places in The Villages we conclude that it is a culinary wasteland where olive garden and bob Evans are, sadly, as good as it gets. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to discover Thai Ruby in The Villages! It was pretty good. The red chicken curry was delicious, and all the other dishes at other tables looked fresh and tasty. Only disappointments were that they did not offer varying heat levels (i.e. 1 to 5 stars), and the food came out within 2 minutes (not kidding), which was awesome because we were hungry, but it wasn't very warm. read more

It's the same problem as Mr.Cebiche in Mount Dora (see my review of that): Ethnic food in an area that has no competing restaurants. So, even mediocre seems good, because they are the only game in town. People are either unfamiliar with the genre and are just excited to have something different, or are so jonesing for a specific kind of food that they'll take anything because of the lack. In this part of the world, it's basically rural/small town and "The Villages," a monster retirement community that is like an island here. This establishment is in the heart of The Villages in one of their theme-park community hubs called "Sumter's Landing." This is not an area where there is a abundance of authentic ethnic cuisine. Having said all of that, this place is a nice place with a nice staff, but the food is mediocre and over-priced. The dishes range from just flat out wrong to OK. Not horrible, but in an area like SoCal, where there are a million Thai restaurants, this place would disappear in the crowd, especially considering the caliber of that crowd. In the Villages, it seemingly does well and gets 4 stars on here. So, look--if you really want Thai and you live here or are visiting (like we were), than go ahead and try it. It's not terrible, it's a nice place in a nice area and a change of pace from the other local fare. If you've never had Thai, go ahead and try it. Just understand that it's better than this. My only specific comment about the dishes is that I would completely avoid the stir-fry dishes. They were more like bland boiled meat and vegetables in way too much liquid. These people have no clue how to do those kinds of dishes. Otherwise, you'll be OK for the most part. read more

Nice quiet Thai restaurant in the villages. Easy to find with plenty of parking in back. Went for early dinner and was not really busy. Service was great and served very fast. Had Pad Thai and really enjoyed it. No heat at all so I guess you could order it spicy but it did have lots of flavor. Look forward to coming back and exploring the menu a little more. read more

I can't get over why such a wonderful place is not Jamb-packed all the time. I have never waited over 10 minutes even when the Square is inundated with folks. If you're in Thailand you're paying $150 per meal for what they serve in such a beautiful place. The staff is super and they will customize any meal on the menu. I don't get it. read more

The service was great, but the food? So so. It's fine if you're into super bland food. The food had no spice (Thai fried rice, pepper pork and beef were ordered). This restaurant is likely catering to an older clientele that does not prefer spicy food. We got a sampler apt. dish that was very underwhelming and they only had one beer (Tsingtao ) but the rest of the evening was special. The two friends chicken dish, pad thai, pineapple fried rice, a spicy squid dish - which was good but not spicy, and a beef dish in peanut sauce (which name escapes me right now but was moaningly good) were all exceptional. The atmosphere is decent, the staff was friendly but lacked on being attentive. Fish is all frozen, except the salmon. I had soup and Pad Thai, it lacked the standard Thai punch that the culture is famous for. The Pad Thai was rather bland tasting. All in all this place is really marginal and priced for top quality. Had a lunch outing and decided to give this place a shot, based on the positive reviews previously given. The complimentary appetizers (sweet cheese wonton and onion soup) were pretty good. For the entrées, we had two lunch specials; she had the pork wings and I had the duck. Service was very engaged, even with the slight language barrier. After the entrées, we were treated to a complimentary dessert (Thai donuts). These delectable treats were an awesome ending to a pleasing meal (warm and sweet, filled with flavor). This restaurant used to be great about a year ago when I first tried it. I went the second time and I was awful. We got the Thai shrimp fried rice and the shrimp pad Thai. The rice was like cheap Chinese takeout food with no flavor at all. The shrimp in both dishes was the very low quality frozen shrimp you see at cheap Chinese take out places. The pad Thai was not much better. I think they are taking on the old attitude "it's the villages and people will come anyway." I am sad to lose the only place we had for Thai. Although this is a chain restaurant, this Villages addition to their chain is working out great for them and their patrons. A very warm and friendly atmosphere where you can have a quiet meal - a rare thing these days. A very convenient location in Sumter Landing. Their meals are mostly normal for their niche but always very good and very well presented. Service is extraordinarily good - they use a team approach where any and (often) all of the service people assist you during your meal. You never need to wait - they are always there to help! Soups are tasty and hot. Meals can be modified to be spicy, very spicy, Thai spicy or mild. A very highly recommended Villages restaurant! read more
