I don't like giving an establishment a bad review or even a mediocre one. But sometimes it's warranted, especially after a second chance. What follows is not to detract from the service. It was good on both occasions that I ate at Thai Ruby. The ladies were always nice. I first ate here in December 2022. I was disappointed. I ordered the pad thai. Pad thai is a litmus test. It's one of Thailand's national dishes. The noodles were just mushy and the balance of spices uninspired. To be fair, the chicken was tender and not overdone. But I have had frozen microwave phad thai bowls of better quality than this fare. It was difficult to finish. Compounding my disappointment was the appetizer sampler. It was a ratio of 80% batter and 20% substance, the insides of the spring rolls didn't taste fresh. The sampler was simply unpalatable. The second time was a bit better. I had the lunch special with drunken noodles, chicken rice soup and a spring roll. I enjoyed the soup. However, the inside of the spring roll, like in December, lacked freshness. The drunken noodles were okay, much better than the phad thai. Yet, there was an odd fishiness to the taste, suggesting shared utensils or just sloppy cooking. I was also not taken seriously when I ordered it "Thai hot". That amounted to little more than an extra shake of dried, crushed red peppers. I think Thai Ruby suffers from two major problems. (1) There is a lack of competition. Over the last 25 years, I have eaten at many Thai restaurants in several major metropolitan areas. I know the experience of excellent Thai food. I also know "Thai hot". Thai Ruby would not survive in Washington DC. (2) I am guessing that Thai Ruby is spoiled by a naive clientele. Customers that have not enjoyed real Thai food have nothing to compare them to and thus cannot hold them to account. I am stunned by the 5-star reviews. It is management's responsibility to uphold Thai Ruby to Thai food benchmark standards and not just the barest minimum standards which allow them to get by. It suggests a lack of pride. I am reluctant to ever eat here again. Thai Ruby is no gem. read more

We went here for lunch of a Sunday afternoon at about 1 pm. The restaurant was not completely full and we were able to be seated immediately. The outside of the restaurant which is part of a strip of stores does not look at all like the inside of the restaurant which looks like a typical Thai restaurant with wood carvings inside and comfortable seating. Seating in the restaurant range from 2-12 people so it would be a good place to take your family or go with a small group of friends. We were able to order the lunch special and decided to get red curry with tofu and pad see ewe with beef to share. The lunch special also came with the soup of the day which happened to be a vegetable clear broth soup and a small eggroll with sweet and sour dipping sauce. The red curry was DEEE-LI-CIOUS. Honestly, it was one of the best curries I've had in awhile. Sadly, the pad see ewe did not even come close. The flavor was bland and the noodles were incorrectly cooked...they came lumped together and had been boiled too long so they were also falling apart. It was the worst pad see ewe I have had. It was more like pad see ewww. I don't know if the cook was having a bad day or in a rush but I was disappointed. The service was very good. They apologized for the food taking too long because there was a larger party there and they made sure that our water glasses stayed filled. I would definitely check it out if you live near the Villages or are stopping by Lake Sumter Landing. There are lots of little shops and restaurants and it is a walkable area. I ordered the Red Curry with Shrimp. I loved the variety of vegetables that it came with. I ordered medium heat , but had wished I ordered it Thai spicy. But our waitress did bring out the container with extra spices. My husband ordered the Ruby Beef. My 2 kids (6 and 3) got 2 appetizers to share. The dumplings & the chicken satay. There were 5 dumplings & 4 chicken skewers. We also ordered the spring rolls as our appetizer. All 4 of us enjoyed them. I also got a Thai tea. We were happy with everything & would definitely go back. The restaurant was nice inside & the waitresses were wearing traditional Thai clothing. If I could give negative stars I would. Took about 1 hr and 15 minutes for our food to come out. One meal was wrong and all the meals were gross (and we love Thai food!). Even the spring rolls had very little filling, basically all wrapper. We complained about the wait and were told "you need to respect we are busy" and she blamed me for the delay because I ordered soft veggies. No apology until the very end. Except only credit on the meal was for the one meal that was wrong. This was my little girls birthday dinner and just really bad service. Of course she was super punctual to come back around and get her money. Took our bill before we even finished eating. Won't go back there in future trips to town. I go to Thai Ruby for lunch once a month with friends and I always order Drunken Noodles mix with beef, chicken, seafood or veggies at different times. This is my favorite restaurant, reasonably priced, courteous and efficient service, and delicious food. My friends like it too and it has a variety of other foods in its menu. read more

So sorry I had to even pick a star. The hostess seating us appeared as though it was too much of an effort to find us a table. Then, we asked for a full menu when we were only given a lunch menu. That seemed to perturb her even more! Our server came by and we asked her for the full menu as the hostess never returned. She brought the menus back to us and never returned. I read the menu and there were items with bell pepper and without. So I chose the items without bell pepper so I would not have to give the details of what happens to me to my friends or the wait staff. That backfired on me and my companion who is also sensitive to the bell shaped peppers and also chose based on what she read. She can pick around them. I can't. WOW!! What a gem in an unexpected area. Thanks to fellow Yelpers, we jumped in for some lunch at TR and so glad we did. We were warmly greeted and expeditiously seated as soon as we arrived. The decor is nicely done and is consistent with what you would expect in a Thai restaurant. Everyone is very friendly and gracious, which makes for a nice experience. The tofu vegetable panang curry was fantastic! There was a depth of flavor that I look for but not everyone gets it right - TR certainly got it right. The Thai iced tea was amazing, too. Most places are afraid of spice so I was surprised when what I got was truly spicy and I loved it. First, the online prices were very different than when I got to the restaurant. My lunch special online was $8.45 and soup came with it. When I called, I was told the soup only came with it for dine in. So I ordered Tom Yum tofu soup which was $2.95 online. When I got to the restaurant I found out the lunch special was now over $10 and the soup was $5.50. And I had to ask for chopsticks and then about to go out the door I thought of utensils for the soup. They had not provided them for a take-out lunch? So I asked for them. Finally, the lunch was less than satisfactory. I ordered Penang chicken and there were six slices of zucchini, five slices of pepper, no onions, no bean sprouts, no mushrooms, and a slight amount of chicken. Will not be back for lunch. read more

It has a really genuine Thai feel to it, with the super polite and courteous servers. Thai Ruby is located in Sumter Landing in The Villages, and parking should be plentiful all around, whether it be on the street or the designated lot nearby. The interior is nice and spacious and the decor and ambiance is really authentic. We ordered the Pad See Ew, Panang Chicken, and the Thai Ruby Ice Cream and they were all really tasty. The Pad See Ew was on point and portions were good, but the Panang Chicken was just alright, and a little lacking in the chicken department - the portions were small for this dish. To top it off, we ordered the Thai Ruby Ice Cream for dessert. The texture of the crispy banana chips and the ice cream worked really well together, making this dessert a must get. The restaurant is pretty and feels authentic Thai. But the food does not. My mother being Chinese moved to the area, and we decided to try out Thai Ruby with her Thai friend. We were all so disappointed. Service was good. Overpriced. We ordered... Beef Drunken Noodles Shrimp Cashew Ginger Shrimp & Tofu Everything was so bland. The shrimp wasn't fresh. The noodles were overcooked to where they were mush. The rice isn't good quality and again very overcooked. And honestly, it tasted more like Americanized Chinese food. The ginger and cashew dish were identical, except one had cashews and one had shredded ginger on top. Don't waste your money here. This isn't real Thai. read more
