Stopped into this Thai place for a quick lunch since I was in the area and had never been. It's set back in a little shopping center that contains one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Winston, so I figured why not? It's a small place, but service is good and it's comfortable enough for a quick meal. They have a lunch specials menu that is pretty good, several selections that range in price depending on your choice of protein. Also comes with a small greens salad, and 2 spring rolls. I chose a stir fry noodle dish, I can remember the exact name right now, but the sauce was a little too much on the sweet side for my liking. I had it with the roast pork, and though the pork did have a nice flavor, it was hard to overcome the sweetness of the sauce. The noodles also absorbed a lot of it, so in general, it just wasn't my bag. That said, pretty good deal, I might come back another time and try something else. Maybe a curry dish. read more

The place was empty except for one couple and the owner at 5:30 on a Saturday and we should have left at that point. The order came out quickly, since they weren't cooking for anyone I couldn't expect any less. The Pad Thai was too sweet but okay and the Penang was more like a coconut soup, not thick like the Penang we have had a number of times in a lot of different places. We brought this out to the owner and she said that some places add stuff to it....hmmm, yes like love, but this wasn't it. This restaurant refers to itself as WS's "premier Thai restaurant", so I thought I'd see if that is, in fact, the case! I had read enough reviews and seen enough pictures to believe that the claim might well have some basis, even though going against outstanding competition such as Chiang Mai Thai and Basil Leaf Thai - the game is on! The interior is bright and colorful, and is small and rather narrow, in a rectangular shape. There is plenty of sunlight from the large front windows. There are some attractive wall decorations and vases and figurines scattered around. I ordered the Thai Sawatdee Appetizer platter, to be followed by the crispy Cornish Hen. I settled for sweet tea since they do no offer alcohol here. The appetizer platter consisted of 2 pieces each of Chicken Satay, Crab Rangoon, Golden Shrimp, & Golden Triangle. The satay skewers were massive, indicating this was more a pressed item than a naturally cut one, resulting in a chewy texture, which the various sauces and spice tray items helped only marginally. The other items on the platter were all overcooked rendering the fillings rather tough and tasteless. I definitely would not reorder this platter or any item on it. The Cornish Hen suffered much the same fate from overcooking - it was dry, tough, and was missing any real flavor. A good amount of a variety of the sauces & spice tray helped, but this is just masking the underlying blandness. This meal was way below my expectation, but perhaps the problem was that I chose something other than a classic Thai dish. I will come again and try some more traditional choices ( a noodle dish, or a stir fry) and see how that turns out. At this point I can't support the claim mentioned above! read more

Another bad experience. I guess based on the reviews we are just unlucky. As in my previous reviews the food was good but portions noticeably smaller. Service was again an issue. Ordered through DD and the dasher waited for over 10 minutes for order and then left. Second dasher arrived only to be told order was already picked up. When she told them that it had not they then said they just received the order (50 minutes after order was confirmed). Dasher was great and waited for them to make the order and we got our order after 1 hour 20 minutes waiting. Just messed up. read more

Not a bad deal, the lunch special at this Healy Drive establishment. For ten bucks I ordered pad woonsen with roast pork, accompanied by two spring rolls, a small salad, and a scoop of steamed rice. The noodles are just one of several options on the lunch menu, and there are other protein options available (most except seafood at the same price), but I can certainly vouch for the flavor of the roast pork. The wide range of vegetables in the glass-like noodles was also impressive and added to the flavor and texture of the dish. I also enjoyed the spring rolls, and they were so warm that I nearly burned myself with the first bite! Getting seated was a bit slow, even though there was only one other guest present when I arrived. The sole diner saw me waiting quite a while, as there was no staff present in the dining area for several minutes, and she interrupted her own experience to suggest that I phone the staff to get their attention. Before I could do so, someone finally emerged from the kitchen to welcome me. After that initial delay, service was much more prompt throughout the meal. Business picked up substantially as I finished, so it also took more time than I hoped to settle the bill. While the location is small, when it's busy they could definitely use the support of additional servers rather than relying on just one person to cover the front of house. The decor is dated here, and the tables are small with their edges pinned against a wall, which explains some of the scuffs on those painted wall surfaces. I didn't find that things were dirty, but I wouldn't call the ambiance distinctive either. A little freshening up and a little more space for diners would help. So I wouldn't necessarily come here for a date or a special night out. But a quick and filling lunch? Thai Sawatdee fits that scenario just fine...as long as they get to you in time. 3.5 stars, but I'd easily bump it up to 4 or more without the delays and with nicer decor. read more

Very traditional Thai food with consistent flavor no matter the day or time you order. This location along with the one inside Harris Teeter on Cloverdale Rd. are somewhat hidden. I only learned about this restaurant because of friends who highly recommended it! My go-to items are always the fresh spring rolls as an appetizer and sticky rice with mango for dessert. As far as the entree, it depends on what I'm in the mood for, but have never been disappointed. Most recently I ordered the spicy noodles with chicken and was pleasantly surprised by the heat index, it was just right. If you prefer super spicy though you can request "Thai Hot". But get your glass of water ready, because it's the hottest version of Thai Hot I've come across in comparison to other Thai restaurants. If you order during lunch hours you will receive complementary springs rolls and soup. Always a nice treat! They have a selection of Pho as well which I'm often found ordering. Stopped in for an impromptu lunch after a doctor's appointment. I thought it looked familiar from a dinner a few years ago, and I was right-- this place has fantastic Thai food! They offer a special lunch menu along with their full menu Monday- Friday from 11am-3pm. On this visit, I opted for the Spicy Noodles with tofu (don't knock it 'til you try it!). It's a dish that consist of stir fried flat noodles, Thai chiles, onions, veggies, garlic, scrambled up eggs, and of course, tofu. I love me some heat, so I ordered mine extra spicy. The lunch special comes with two spring rolls, and a small side salad. Definitely more than enough food to fill you up, and oh-so-good. I can't the ratings that customer had given this restaurant. I cant fault them for their service and ambiance, but the food is not Thai, it's watered down thai food. The calamaries was tough as rubber, the green curry was watery and they did not provide you with bowls for the Thai coconut soup. I was so disappointed with food after paying almost $1k for a family of 15. Thai food at the local food court had more value for money. Sat down with my young son to eat lunch here. The one waitress for the whole floor was so kind to us and accommodating. Our meal experience was very fluid and the food was so tasty. For our entrees, we got duck noodle soup (daily special), pad thai, and spicy noodle. The duck noodle soup seemed alright, meat was adequate and the broth was decent. However, we were given a soup spoon that was not washed completely based on some residual scraps of food. The pad thai and the spicy noodle were pretty underwhelming. For the pad thai, the noodles were really thin (basically like vermicelli or really thin pho noodles). Although an attempt was made in regards to the pad thai sauce, it fell short of expectation.
