The chicken satay here is DELICIOUS, so flavorful and juicy. However that is where the highs ended for me. The Pad Thai was overly sweet. I get that Pad Thai has to have some sweetness, however this was borderline dessert at this point. I could not believe the sweetness to this dish, the noodles were also over cooked. Additionally, I visited on a weekday night, and although there was only one other customer there the service was really slow it was also not attentive, despite the fact that my water glass was empty. There are many different things that caught my eye. The service is mediocre at best. No water, not even offered. For what you got, the prices were pretty high. My wanton soup had partially raw dough in it. Mixture of vegetables provided wasn't appealing; had to go ask for soy sauce or any other condiments, and to pay 4.00 for a glass of iced tea is way too much. Thai Star is a bit of a hole in the wall, it came as a recommendation from a close friend as I spend my day getting some hospital work done. Walking in, Christina did a reasonable job greeting me but was quite busy diligently keeping everything spotless. Can't take points off for hard work when there were all of 3 customers when I walked in. The atmosphere is chosen with delicate care, the personal style of someone who clearly knows what they're doing. Thai Tea was recommended, Thai Coffee if you want to stay up much later. I went with the tea. I asked for the Pad Prik, recommendation of the chef - Wan I believe, exactly as the chef would have it. The visual presentation is quite photogenic, certainly room for individuals and couples and small groups for their fun. I believe there are 11 tables that can seat about 4 each, but they are not bolted to the floor so this place has plenty of room for a party. Chicken was tender, without being too soft. Green beans cooked until they were not squeaky - a personal pet peeve of mine the chef intuitively avoided. Green Peppers sauteed to a pleasant crispness Eggplant respectably cooked and distributed amont the dish The rice was steamed to perfection, and was presented with room for mixing things up. The entire dish sat in a mildly spicy sauce I don't know what Thai Home Cooking tastes like since I'm not Thai, but the food here makes me quite comfortable! I don't doubt that it is also quite healthy, likely densely packed with antioxidants and all that jazz. My hat is off with this performance! read more

The service and staff are great. The two ladies in there are really helpful and attentive. VERY accommodating to dietary restrictions and amazingly truthful. The food was okay, but it may have been what I ordered. I'm definitely willing to go back and try a new dish. My only complaint isn't even about the restaurant itself: since the restaurant is so close to a pet center (two doors down), it kind of smells like animals. Other than that, everything was good. This place is probably my favorite thai restaurant in Merced. It is well hidden so they do not get many traffic or people. I believe many people are not aware of this place due to their location. This is really a hidden gem in Merced. Their thai food is the best you'll get in Merced. This is a mom and pop shop. They use homemade ingredients with a very balance mixture of spices. They do have lunch specials and I do come here for lunch more often now. I love their garlic chicken. Strong on the garlic but you still can taste the chicken. Their pad thai is on the more saucy and heavy favor end. Most of their food is on the strong favored side so if you like it bland tasting, you probably will not like the food here. The service is amazing. Very friendly. Family owned. Very humble. I do recommend the pad thai, yellow curry, or garlic chicken. I have yet to try the rest of the menu but it is hard to venture out your comfort zone once you find a dish that hits the spot. read more

THE best restaurant in Merced. I come to town about every other month to visit my boyfriend, and Thai Star is the only restaurant we go to when I visit. Unlike many restaurants in the city, Thai Star tastes very authentic and genuinely is like a home cooked meal. The lady who always seats us (who I presume is the owner?) is always very nice and welcoming. Very reasonable prices, and has easily become one of my favorite Thai restaurants ever :) read more

Disappointed in the chicken pho. I ordered one to-go. It was very small in comparison to other Thai spots here in Merced. There were hardly any noodles, which is pretty much what all pho is. The papaya salad was pretty good, but the tofu spring rolls...not even sure what they were. Just plain weird. I'm not sure if it was some type of rice paper or tapioca wrap but you couldn't even pick it up, had to eat it with a fork because it falls apart. The restaurant is on top of everything and communicates with me promptly that they were out of mangos and we were able to substitute the fruit with a Jack fruit. Decided to try Thai today for the first time, my mom and I were the only ones in the small nicely decorated dining area. The owner was very nice and suggested dishes for our first taste of Thai. I got Pad Brik with chicken and it had red curry and I was skeptical I wasn't going to like it but honestly it was spicy and delicious. I def will be back to try other dishes but overall I'm happy my first time didn't scare me away from Thai food. We are staying in Merced for business and really wanted Thai food for dinner. They are closed on Sundays, so we opted to go Monday. It was quiet and clean up on entering the restaurant. We did have to ask for water, but it came promptly. There are lots of choices on the menu, most of your typical Thai food staples and some more unique options. I ordered the butternut squash curry with chicken and my husband had the Thai crazy noodles. Both of which were very good and huge portions. We had enough to eat that night and enough to make another dinner. Prices were very reasonable, service was quick and friendly and we really enjoyed the food. We have eaten at Thai restaurants in 4 states, many in california, this ranks in the top 10. Not the best I've eaten, but certainly up there with the really good ones. Thai is probably my favorite type of food, but I don't have any Thai restaurants in my hometown so I thought I'd give this place a shot while out on a work-related drive. I tried the Pineapple Red Curry and was very unimpressed. The sauce was so watery that it didn't stick to the rice as it should. It all just sort of pooled at the bottom of the rice pile. The flavor of the sauce, however, was solid enough, if a bit mild. The real deal breaker here was the flavor of the chicken. It was clearly cooked in chicken broth separately from the coconut curry sauce. Picture chicken pulled from chicken noodle soup in your curry. The decision to do this is baffling, as that flavor profile has no place among the bright, clean, and bold flavors of a Thai curry. If I'm ever through Merced again there is no chance I'll eat here despite my unending appetite for Thai food. read more
