Like most dudes, I don't pay much attention to my style. Except when my wife makes me. So she scheduled an appointment for me at Thairapy because we need to get family photos done and it best our son not think his dad's an Ewok. My wife was referred to this place by her BFF and she loves it so I do what all good husbands do and obey her command; even though she made the appointment right in the middle of prime Saturday breakfast time, a sin for which I found the goodness to forgive her. My first thought after googling the location of Thairapy was: parking. I thought parking would be a nightmare for some reason which could not have been more untrue. There were a few street spot on the block in front of the business. Maybe Summer months you won't be so lucky... only time will tell. I parked, paid the meter, grabbed my DnD coffee, and stepped inside the salon. The woman who greeted me at the counter was friendly and inviting. She took my jacket and handed me a new customer form. After completing and returning the form the woman asked who was my wife as I listed her as the person who referred me. I gave her name then she said she'll be glad to know that she will received $15 off her next service with the new referreal. AHA! Now I know why she sent me here. Always looking for a discount. Diana was ready immediately to begin crafting my mop into something, well, I don't know, less "moppy." She asked me what I wanted and I gave her my normal response, "I don't know." I'm not metro so I don't really know what a good hair style is nor do I know what works well with my head. I just wash, dry, and go. I ask her for forgiveness and let her know I am not trying to be difficult but that I am just that stupid. She was patient and understanding. The cut was solid. Diana wasn't afraid to take the reigns and tame my doo. Cut, snip, trim. After about 35-40 minutes she was done and I was more than pleased. Diana was friendly, professional, personable, and talented. She gave me a great style without compromising my dude-ness. She showed me how to apply some hair wax styling goo and gave me her business card. "You might not remember my name but you'll remember Chewbakka," she said as she handed me her card which was decorated with an artists' rendition of her styling Chewbakka's hair. On my way out I made another appointment and retrieved my jacket from the closet. Thairapy may just have cured my salonaphobia or at least will help keep it at bay with routine sessions. read more

Outside of retaining a general knowledge base of your life, she has to know what to do with the mop on your head, so that you walk out feeling like a full on goddess. Enter Diana. This gal- let me tell ya. She's such a bad-ass that Wella hires her as an independent consultant. She has salvaged me from brink of catastrophe, to full on bombshell. All with a smile on her face (and barely breaking a sweat) There's nothing pretentious about the salon- why does that matter? Cause these miraculous feats of hair- they require work, and time. You'll be there for a while, in good hands in good company is the ONLY way to do it. (Not to mention a glass of wine) Let's be real- you get what you pay for. So there is a part of me that doesn't want to write this review because I don't want people to know about this spot but here goes.. I have now been to Thairapy twice for cut and color -- Kerry was recommended to me by a good friend and let me tell you, she did not disappoint. I have been cursed with significant amounts of gray hair since I was 18 so regular hair coloring is a part of my life. I had been going to a different salon for the past several years and just felt like my look needed some new oomph. Kerry helped me select a beautiful color that, while natural looking, gave me the punch that I was going for. So, terrific color -- and add that to a fabulous haircut -- five stars all the way. What really sold me on this salon, however, was not just the haircut. Kerry is a great person -- and so are the rest of the people who work here. When you walk in, you feel like you are Norm from Cheers. Everyone greets you, everyone is friendly, and they offer you wine with your styling services. Nothing like kicking back on a Thursday night with some cool people who beautify you and help you relax. Thairapy seems like a nice place, but my first experience wasn't good. My stylist was rushing, getting interrupted by friends, and cut my hair uneven in the front. Maybe because I'm a guy she didn't care. Or maybe I reminded her of an ex-boyfriend, I dunno. Bottom line is that I'm a dude who isn't all that picky about his hair; But if I'm paying over $30 for a haircut, I expect to be treated much better. They do offer good discounts for referrals. Maybe if I decide to give it another try I will change this review, but for now I don't like Thairapy. UPDATE: The owner contacted me via Yelp to apologize and offer a free haircut. In the summer of 2006, I experienced one of the worst experiences in Chicago. Hardcore heat stroke during Pitchfork festival. It was awful. Considering my hair was 17"+ inches, I knew that something had to change for Lollapalooza. I wasn't able to find a place to donate my hair before the festival, but I was able to find one in Chicago the day before the festival, and the cut would be free since I was donating my hair. BONUS! Haha. As I walked in, my friend and I were both offered white wine or champagne, I can't exactly remember. I'm not very picky and I hadn't had short hair in years, nor had I had an actual hair cut. When the stylist combed through my hair, it was all compliments and making sure I wanted to give up 'such beautiful hair'. I'm not a fancy girl, but I felt pretty fancy there. Thairapy pretty much saved my life on Saturday. (No exaggeration, either!) You see, I had this work event to go to Saturday night and I was in absolutely NO do my hair. I'm sorry, but straightening my hair is a a chore...and sometimes you just don't want to do it. Don't judge! Thanks to Yelp's handy dandy Blackberry app, I made an appointment with Thairapy for a blowout at 12:30. (It was pretty close to my yoga class and I'm all about efficiency people!). As soon as you walk in, you get hit with the friendly and fun vibe. The walls are bright, vivid colors...and everyone in there was smiling. Like, genuinely smiling. It was really refreshing for a Saturday afternoon. Rebecca, the owner, actually did my blowout! She was super, super friendly, funny and raved about how much she loved my hair. (Who wouldn't LOVE that?!) I love that she introduced me to all the employees there. It was such a welcoming environment! Besides loving the salon overall, I ADORED how Rebecca styled my hair! She actually curled my hair a little, so I had these amazing curls..and since I have layers, it looked so glam and fabulous. The best part is that she didn't put any spray in it, so my hair had movement and looked pretty natural for the most part. LOVE. (And, for those of you that care, the style lasted like 2 days! Pretty impressed.) Life saver, indeed. FYI - Thairapy also offers massages, facials, mani/pedi's, waxing - full service, yo! Blowouts start at $35, but increases depending on the stylist, how much hair you have, etc. They also have this awesome 'referral credit' of $15, but, for April they're upping it to $30. I have been a client of Thairapy Plus since the doors opened on Lincoln Avenue. They always offer a beverage upon my arrival and offer to hang up my coat. I have always gotten wonderful complements on how my hair looks after getting it cut there. I have a standing appointment every 4 weeks with Paul Satera. He has cut my hair for so long that I usually fall asleep since I don't have to worry about how my cut will turn out. Every stylist that has cut my hair has done an excellent job. While my coworkers would balk at how much I pay for a cut, my hair always looks twice as good as theirs! I no longer live in the city but I am fortunate enough to drive to work and Thairapy Plus is sort of on the way home. I visited Thairapy for a cut and highlights. Diana was wonderful- she listened to what I wanted and fulfilled my expectations. My highlights look great and although I didn't change my haircut much, I'm pleased with the results. All of the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable. My one complaint is they don't allow you to put tip on your card. This is a major pet peeve of mine and one of the reasons I'm leaving my other salon. Regardless of if I'm reminded of this silly rule or not, I will inevitably forget and have to make a run to the ATM after my appointment, pay a fee, and return to tip the stylist. Who carries cash on them nowadays? It's a debit card kind of world. It's not like I'm paying $10 for a haircut. It's the appropriate thing to do for both the customer and the staff at a high-end salon. read more

She's super thorough, super clean & really down to earth. I have been living in this neighborhood for almost 10 years and always pass this Salon and never really gave it a second glance, however I got a gift certificate for this place and decided to treat myself the day before my engagement party. It was all amazing. I've been there a couple times to buy the skin care products, Dermalogica. There're almost full lines of its best products which hardly find at other shops. A sale staff, Tamara, is so friendly and very helpful. She always recommends the right ones for my skin. Only one thing, it's a bit more pricy than I buy directly from the website (www.dermalogica.com/us). Probably, I'll try to buy from the website and wait for a week to get it. Overall, I also like this salon since it looks very clean, professional and they use the high quality products for their customers. I'll go back there to do my hair salon soon. read more

I donated my hair here and started coming after that. They were great because it was the first place that ever "worked" with me on a haircut. I did a funky asymmetrical cut and she pulled it off great considering all my cow-licks. I was also happy just with the fact that they always understood what I was going for. The few times I went somewhere else they always messed it up and left something standing up funny. Sure, the other places were cheaper, but it never grew out right and they didn't take their time. Or they could also be a bit judgemental about my short hair and would give me shapeless boy's cut. Thairapy does give you a free trim a month later, totally worth it for this broke college student. I really would recommend them, they are a super nice place that really take their time to get what you want. If you are going for something different or have fussy hair, I would especially recommend them. read more

I had a great experience here! I went in on a Friday morning and had my appointment with Diana. She played with my long hair, found cowlicks that I never realized I had, and helped me figure out a way to still get the style I wanted while avoiding them! She listened actively to what I wanted and gave her honest opinion on my ideas. I loved that she wasn't just there to do anything I said, and at the same time, really understood what I wanted. She also did a great job with my color! I can't wait to go back! This is the best haircut I've had in a very, very long time. And it was less expensive than Siren, where I used to go. Wow! What can I say, I am the type of guy who has pretty much ignored my feet for the better half of my young life. Wait, my entire life. So as my girlfriend has been telling me to get them checked out I happened to come across this place which is close to where we live. Boy am I glad that I did! I was in a bad need of a pedicure because a month before I ran a half marathon and and my toenails were shot to H-E-double hockey sticks! The salon is clean, cute and comfy. They even offered me wine when I got there and being a Friday night I couldn't pass it up! Everyone was really nice and the woman who did my nails was sweet and talked to me, but also let me relax and read my magazine. She also explained to me on what to do when I run my next marathon. Cut my nails short, the more skin in your heels the better and don't force the toenails off if they are starting to fall off! She did an excellent job and my one toe actually looks like a toe again and I am not embarrassed to wear flipflops again. I have been going to Thairapy Plus for many years, but they told me I hadn't been in there in 3 years! While it is a little pricey for me to go here every month, I'll tell you now it won't be another 3 years! My feet will make sure of that! read more

I generally go 4-6 months between hair cuts. When I moved to Chicago I was in this range and put off a trim for a while longer. When I finally bit the bullet, I was thrilled that I chose Thairapy. The first thing they asked me when I entered was if I would like a beer. Then I described how I don't do much grooming before work and they took over from there. The cut turned out great, and I learned a few tips for making myself look exceptionally nice for special events. I was looking around for a new place for a haircut. I ask around and Thairapy Plus came HIGHLY recommended from several people in several circles in my life. They all stated I MUST also get a pedicure from 'The Great Carmen' as it would change my feet forever; I never had a pedicure before but was convinced to try it so I made an appointment to check them out. When I called I was greeted by a friendly voice and set an appointment for both a pedicure and a haircut. Upon arrival the salon looked very professional and clean. I was greeted by Tamara at the front desk and Rebecca the owner and stylist who happened to also be there at that moment. Both were extremely nice "Water, coffee, tea, wine or a beer" I was asked; they made me feel right at home. Without delay I was greeted in the same friendly manner by Carmen, I told her of her recommendations from my friends and family and she knew them all!! She took me to the nail area which was well organized and clean. The pedicure chairs are very comfortable and the process was very clean. Carmen was meticulous and a really took very good care of my feet. Not once was I uncomfortable even with all the sharp scissors and files. WOW I was amazed by how my feet felt afterwards!!! The Great Carmen definitely lives up to her hype and has made a true believer out of me!!! Next up was a haircut from Rebecca. She took a very personal approach and taking the time to understand what I was looking for. She even convinced me to change my current style a bit to have more fun with my hair. During the haircut Rebecca was very personable, made me feel right at home as if I had been coming to the salon for several years or as an old friend. My hair came out better than expected, she even took the time to show me several different ways I could style it between business and play without making it complicated. She also took care of those random eye brow hairs that grow too long. I was confident enough to let her make recommendations and adjustments to my beard!! New stylist found!! Future visits are consistent with the first. I even took an hour deep massage from John who released sooo much tension and corrected a bunch of knots in my back. I highly recommend an hour as he really takes care of you; my back has never felt better!! Thairapy Plus is a great family of people who care. I have had the chance to get to know all of the staff and they all make me feel welcome. Needless to say I found a new home for all my grooming needs!!! From the first conversation on the phone booking my appointment, to the actual service itself, to saying good bye at the end, Thairapy provided top-notch service and a wonderful experience! This salon is a neighborhood gem that I feel so lucky to have found. I don't remember the name of the woman who gave me my spray tan but she was AMAZING. She did such a thorough and excellent job and made me feel so comfortable. She even offered me a glass of wine! I felt like I was chatting with a friend whom I had known for years :) The spray tan I received looks incredible. Very natural and beautiful. It was exactly what i needed right in the middle of a dark, cold and gloomy winter! It's not often that you find a salon in Chicago where you feel right at home, and are treated like family. I cannot recommend this place enough. After working my way through most of the Lincoln Square salons I finally found my home. The stylists actually listen to you and then make suggestions without being pushy. Most of the salons I've been to glaze over when you talk about what you want, and then just cut your hair like jennifer aniston, not here. Ever. I wear my hair super big and red, and it was so hard to find a stylist who didn't try and thin it out, or darken my color. Kristen is a genius with redheads and blow-outs. Not only does she give great, flattering cuts, but she also does an excellant job of styling. (and knows all the good celebrity gossip). Plus everyone here is super friendly and chatty. It's a great beauty parlor and I've met of bunch of funny women from the neighborhood there too. Everyone kind of talks to each other, instead of having a bunch of mini-conversations, which is great. You can really tell that all the staff gets along. They're also great at squeezing you in last minute, and talking walk-ins. read more
