The Food: Hits and Misses I had a very mixed experience with the food here. The Thai Basil Fried Rice was actually quite good--well-seasoned and flavorful. However, the rest of the meal was a major disappointment. The Egg Fried Rice was bland and not worth ordering. The Crispy Duck: A Major Letdown I usually love Crispy Duck, but they completely messed it up. While the skin was crispy on the outside, the meat was totally raw on the inside. It had an unappealing smell, suggesting it wasn't cooked properly at all. It was served on top of white rice, which offered no flavor or value to the dish, aside from the sweet soy sauce. Verdict Unless you are coming specifically for the Basil Fried Rice, I'd be cautious. Serving undercooked poultry is a serious quality control issue. I won't be rushing back. read more

It did take a while to order since the waiter was busy with another customer (he was upfront about that). I got a seasonal drink. I don't remember the name but it was thai black tea, apple cider, and ginger beer. It was very good. My husband got a coke. For food, we ordered the vegetable rolls for an app. I ordered the chicken cashew (under "stir fry"), while my husband ordered the crispy duck basil (under "thaitan highlight"). FOOD: -vegetable rolls - these were delightfully crispy and the dipping sauce was balanced -chicken cashew - the cashews were buttery and the chicken was moist. it was a bit spicy. the rice was a little dry -crispy duck basil - the duck was delicious and addictive, but spicy. both entrees were a bit above our spice level but the flavor was really great. we had to wait a while for our check and the waiter only checked on us when we were almost done. this place is close to our house, but unfortunately, there are better places than this. that's not a knock on them, there's just a lot of competition in the area. we would return and ask for less spice. read more

There are only two spots In the Loudoun County area where you can find amazing Thai Food. And one of them is Thaitan. Everytime I've come here the staff have always greeted me well and taken great care of me. The inside is medium sized and the bathroom is most especially clean. Place was busy for a Friday night! Seems like a popular local spot for both dining in and takeout. The highlight of our meal was their Crispy Duck Noodle Soup - the broth was sweet and rich, we got as less spicy, but it still had a bit of a kick, and complimented the crispy duck pieces nicely. The Duck Ka-Pow was okay, also got it as less spicy but the duck was surprisingly a bit dry. cute place with delicious food! the employees were super kind and welcoming. i dont know of any good resturants in this area, but was plesantly suprised with our visit. the pad garlic & pepper stir fry with beef was absolutely delicious. one of the best thai dishes ive had, ever! simple ingredients and reminded me of a home cooked meal. the pad thai had good flavors but was way too salty. i would take notice of that for next time. enjoyed it with a side of rice and it was perfect. read more

When my friend asked me what kind of cooking to expect here, the first word that came to mind was homey. In a very good way. Dining at Thaitan is like being invited into a Thai family home and having this family's treasured recipes. Indeed, the co-owner told me that her signature green curry dish is very popular with guests after I told her how much I loved Thaitan's version. I also love their boat noodle soup, which has many rich flavors and doesn't skimp on meat either! Thaitan's boat noodle soup has the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Sometimes, I feel kind of done with noodle soups by the end because they're way too salty, though satisfying for, maybe, the first half. Thaitan's boat noodle soup has me wanting to drain the bowl, and I would have if I hadn't also shared the appetizer sampler platter with my friend. Service is friendly and helpful. I appreciated how they offered suggestions on how to customize dishes and get the best of the flavors (e.g., choice of beef or pork for boat noodle soup). The restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere. I was looking for something near Dulles Expo center and I found this place on Yelp while driving (I had my copilot doing most of the looking for safety's sake :)). Upon entering, I immediately saw the extent of the investment in the interior: the art on the walls, the seating, and the service all came together perfectly from the start. It is a small storefront with approximately a dozen or so tables. The feel was warm and modern. The server is assisted by a small, dedicated team. It feels very much like a family business and everyone is fully invested in the success of the establishment, answering questions promptly and ensuring customers feel taken care of. The food is HANDS DOWN THE BEST Thai I have had in the Washington DC area! I am currently looking for something going near Dulles that will bring me back, just so I have an excuse to "stop by". Lol It is really that good. We started with the crispy pork belly and curry puff. The pork belly came with a side salad that had a bright and delightfully acidic dressing that was freshly made. The pork belly had a great crisp and was not over seasoned and not bland. The chicken curry puff was one of the standouts of the meal. The pastry was shaped in a nice swirl that was aesthetically appealing. It had this croissant-like texture that simply melted in your mouth with every bite. There was this surprising, faint sweetness to it that was very nice compliment to the robustness of the curry within. The appetizers were stellar. For entrees, I got Panang curry (with chicken) and my companion got the Pad Se-Eiu (with duck and shrimp). There was a good amount of spice in both, but it was not overpowering. The curry had a flavor that was deep and complex, only to be followed by the kiss of medium spiciness to finish. The duck and shrimp added to the Pad Se-Eiu were ample. The duck in particular was a very nice portion size added to he dish. The shrimp were worth getting added, however the tails were on them. I will assume that is traditional Thai preparation and not ding them for that with everything else executed to perfection. If you are considering going to this restaurant, don't walk, RUN to get there. This place will not fly under the radar for long with their warm, personable service, their succulent menu, and their accessible location. I look forward to going back on my next trip to that side of town. read more

The service was sub-par. We placed our orders and the food was served pretty quick. I ordered a dish and asked for medium spice, but they gave me spicy instead. I had to request chopsticks and the lady gave me a look when she handed them to me. I was given more water without asking for it (which was great) but it did not have ice. However, when my friend asked for water they gave her water with ice. For me the entire experience here was not on the level I expected it to be. I feel the staff was a wee bit discriminatory and I will not be returning. I will also let everyone I know this is not a good place to visit. read more

I ate here on New Year's Day not expecting much, and wow was I blown away. The service was hands down the best I have experienced. The owner came around and made conversation with us even though he was busy. He asked us to critique the food, and by the way, we had none. I usually always take pictures of my food, but I was so hungry last week that I just went ahead and ate. I got the Drunken Noodle, Pad Thai, and Dried curry pork. The dried curry pork surprised me on how good it was with the right balance of heat and crispiness. I got Thai hot for the drunken noodle to try it out and it was no joke, don't underestimate it, but nonetheless was delicious. The pad Thai did not disappoint and was not wet at all. The service was great as well greeting me right when I walked in and made sure I had everything before I left. Will be coming again soon! read more

Great new thai spot near our home. We stopped in after looking at the menu and seeing they had some more traditional thai items not found at other places. We ended up having the papaya salad, jungle curry, and the kao soi. All of the flavors were excellent and definitely the most authentic of any of the local thai places we have so far tried (maybe 10-15 others so far). We will be back to try some more items on the menu, but for now we're just happy to have a really good thai spot close by. read more

My brother had been wanting to try this new Thai restaurant. He tried to go once, but it was packed. We went at an odd time (between lunch and dinner) and it was quiet. Food and service were excellent. We had Fried Calamari, Pad Thais, Red Curry, Kaprao Moo Grob, Crispy Pork Belly Fried Rice, and Pad Garlic & Pepper Chicken, With their lunch special, all entrees included your choice of soup, your choice of appetizer (I recommend the crab wontons) and the house salad.
