Thali has a small dining area but opens up to a larger room shared with the wine bar next door. I usually don't go to places that only offer vegetarian or vegan options but I'm very glad I did. It's in one of those new community market style buildings, it serves a set meal, without meat, and it sounds too hip to be any good (he would say). But! Thali dishes up some deliciously mean, authentic indian food without any hint of hipster pretension. I also love the style of meal service. You order either the vegetarian or vegan set menu which consists of about four different dishes and roti. Then you get free refills of any or all of your favorite dishes. I called before placing my order to see if the food can be made less spicy as last year when we tried Thali my mouth was on fire from how spicy it was. The girl assured me they have really toned down the spiciness since last year. I thought it would be ok since I can handle some spice. My mouth was on fire again. Eyes were watering. Could have even been worse than last year. Totally ruined my meal. My husband drove all the way down from Truckee just for this food too. I called and was only given half refund for a fully ruined meal. Also there was no dessert included and no discount or extra food added to compensate. The owner greeted us so kindly and when he found out how excited I was to eat everything vegan in the market after a couple days in the woods, he suggested I get the kids thali for a small taste of everything. Same footprint from the days of being the Bowl. It is very rustic, mixed restaurant space, and we sat in their small dining area. There is in the common which is shared by all the restaurants. Food Drink - Just water as we are heading to a brewery after this. Dinner - The Thali is a great sample of different vegetarian foods from India. Everything is made that day. If you enjoyed that sample you can get more of that item or anything else that was on that tray of food. My favorite was Roti, Indian bread, used to scope the food up. Of course I had to have more with my food. Service - Soon as we walked in were greeted and told we could sit anywhere. After our waiter came over he asked if there were any food allergies or concerns. If you need vegan, they will do that too. Our waiter was great describing items to us in great detail. Met up with a friend for lunch on a weekday. I got the Chana Masala and a Kombucha, which is on tap here. The Chana Masala was very flavorful, lots of spice without being spicy. Food is fantastic. The west street market is cool because you can get beer or dessert from one of the other vendors and sit wherever you want. The menu doesn't really have choices beside vegan or non-vegan. They will serve you the daily special. We got naan bread with five small sides. They refill the sides and rice (all you can eat). Flavors were great. There was a cauliflower and potato dish we couldn't get enough of. The mint chutney is fantastic but you only get about a half teaspoon worth. The servers were a little spacey and forgot the names and details of the side dishes. They seemed overwhelmed, even though the place was pretty empty. Overall it's great. I'd love to go back again. Love this place!! It's healthy, easy, simple and amazing tasting. You basically order plates for however many people there are at the table and there is a specific spread for each day. You can tell them you're vegetarian/vegan and they'll give you a separate spread of amazing dishes. It takes all the guess work out of ordering. They even had a coconut yogurt they made in house. We had been here a few years ago and my husband had been wanting to go back because we remembered delicious food and great service. While the food was still decent, the service was not up to par at all. When we walked in, nobody even greeted us. The apathetic employee standing at the counter simply stared at us blankly until I addressed her. She made no attempt to hide her disgust at our presence. I suppose we were inconveniencing her or something. She didn't ask us if we wanted to order anything to drink and didn't inform us that water was "self-serve." The food was brought out quickly and silently with blank stares. There were no inquiries as to whether we needed anything else. As soon as the food hit the table, they ran away as fast as they could. After that, no employees ever approached our table. One man was standing at the counter waiting to pay for ten minutes while we ate. When I saw that he was finally being helped, I had my husband rush over to pay as well, since I realized if we didn't take advantage of the "opportunity" to pay then, we'd be waiting for who knows how long. The plates are supposedly "bottomless," but if nobody checks on you to see if you want or need more, that might as well be false. We will not be back. read more

Came in on a Sunday night, little hard to find. Use the wine bar next door as a reference, because the sign is inside for Thali. Open kitchen and lots of seating, with candles on the table. I am pretty sure it's where the food coop is. The decor is midtown mixed with northern Indian/Nepal flare. The food comes out fast and reminded me of the style of food I have had at Himalayan/Nepalese places in Seattle. This is not the place for your everyday Indian food. This is more for the adventurous type that likes authentic and hot. I could have it spicier but the other people I was with thought it was plenty spicy. The dishes for this week were a curry acorn squash, home made yogurt (like raita but more liquidy, reminded me of my friends mom's home made yogurt from Kabul) tapioca pudding with raisins, pickled vegetables that were pickled in house, spicy briny chutney, and a yellow lentil dal and a black lentil dal, with naan like bread, but a different type of flour was used (lentil flour I think), and white rice with peas and cilantro. I loved the acorn squash and the pudding. Rich in flavor the squash had great texture and the spice mix was hot but also almost cinnamon savory. The dals were my family's fav, along with the bread. The pudding wasn't overly sweet and let the natural ingredients shine. Other things to note fresh spring water from the area is served and it's a great option for vegan and vegetarian as well as gluten free. They use sustainable food sources. And lastly it's a preset menu so everyone gets the same meal, but it's family style so what you like you can have more of. Kinda like ayce with out the wasted food. read more

I think my favorite part about Thali is the simplicity of the menu, or lack there of. You walk in, pay for your meal up front (which is all you can eat), sit down and you're served almost immediately with their daily menu. My only complaint is that I wasn't told exactly what I was eating, so I can't tell you which entree was my favorite. What I can tell you is that each item I was served was absolutely delicious. They gave us rice and naan, surrounded by 3 hot dishes, two cold, with a side of chutney and cucumber salad. The warm dishes had just the right amount of spice. And the cucumber salad mixed with the chutney was perfect. I got a glass of wine from the Thali Lounge inside as well. The bartender was super knowledgeable and very helpful! Thali's concept is like going to a friend's house for dinner - they know your dietary restrictions, and they make you a plate to eat, and they make you what they make you and you eat what you like.
