I visited Pine State a few months ago - can't believe I never finished my review! I was in town for a conference, and that meant I had a chance to check out the food scene in Downtown Reno! Treated myself to a slow morning and took a short, pleasurable ramble over to Pine State from the Renaissance. It was early, just after opening time, and there was only one other person dining in - so grabbing a table was super easy. Pine State hails from Oregon originally, and the space feels like Portland or NorCal transported to Nevada. Cool, hip and funky. I was excited to have a chance to try the Veggie Reggie, being a vegetarian, biscuits and gravy a usually off limits for me. This one features a vegan breakfast patty, soy bacon, and Tillamook cheddar topped with shiitake mushroom gravy - so it was on! The Reggie came out quickly and looked amazing! Huge and oh-so decadent. I got there right at opening and I think the staff were still getting into the swing of the day, because my gravy was pretty cold, which was a disappointment - and probably muted the flavor a bit. Nice to have a place that mixes it up a bit with some home-style cooking. I got their new breakfast/brunch special, which came with a biscuit, a protein, two eggs, and a side. They did my over-medium eggs perfectly, and the brisket was nice and smoky and also surprisingly lean. The braised greens on the side surprised me a little with the flavor at first--I thought it was a bit too salty, but the tang seemed to come from like a vinegar flavor or something, and it kind of grew on me. Went pretty well with the other parts of the meal. I have to admit I was a little surprised the biscuit was a bit dense and dry--still tasted fresh/made, just a bit off in terms of size and taste compared to the rest of the stuff on the plate. We also got the beignets, which came with a nice bourbon sauce, but sadly a few of them weren't cooked all the way through. The interior was very bright (lots of windows) and clean, and the service team behind the counter was very pleasant. We came here early Saturday morning and decided to grab a table outside after we ordered since it was a beautiful day. All the staff are very friendly amd welcoming. I went with the McIsley chicken that came with pickles and stone ground mustard all between a fresh baked biscuit. The biscuit itself was quite fluffy and tasty. The fried chicken breast was juicy and overall was a good sandwich. I would get it again without the stone ground mustard however. It has a very unique taste and it just wasn't for me. The Shrimp and Grits my wife had was some of the best we've ever had. It was our first time trying a version that included sautéed mushrooms which I thought was a nice touch. She also got fried green tomatoes, but wasn't a fan of those as the batter overwhelmed the tomatoes. Traveled to Reno from Genoa to bring my toddler to the Discovery museum. I was hungry for lunch and wanted to see what great places Reno had to offer. There were several places listed close by via Google, but I saw that Pine State was a 4 min walk from the museum. I'm so glad I chose to come here. Who knew Reno would have some amazing southern food?! It's a small spot with limited outdoor seating and minimal indoor seating with approximately 5-6 four tops, about the same amount of deuces, and 2 booths in the back for larger parties. You place your order at the register and they assign you a table. They do bring your food to the table, but you are expected to bus your own table. Their menu selection is huge from all their biscuit sandwiches they offer to special southern dishes to desserts and pastries. As odd as it sounds you'd think I had ordered a biscuit item, but instead I ordered: - Shrimp & Grits - Blueberry Cornmeal Pancake - Peach Cobbler Pop-Tart - Arnold Palmer Every single item I ordered was DELICIOUS!! The shrimp & grits were so tasty with a mushroom bacon gravy. I've had some of the best shrimp & grits in Atlanta, and this one comes close. Their cornmeal pancake was also delicious. My 1 1/2 yr old son pretty much ate the entire thing himself (I only had a few bites to try it) and it was probably 7.5-8" wide. It's served with butter and maple syrup. But their syrup is so thick like they reduced it down which gave it this delicious subtle molasses flavor. Ugh! My mouth is watering typing this. Last, but not least, the peach cobbler pop tart topped with an oat streusel and what looked like, marshmallow fluff. The pastry itself was so good. Flaky and buttery - you could tell their pastries are made from scratch in-house. The pastry had the proper amount of filling with lots of cinnamon peach flavor. I was so full that I only ate a third of it and brought the rest home. I regret not getting a biscuit to-go just to try. If their non-biscuit items were so delicious, I can only imagine how good their biscuits are. This place is worth the 50 minute drive for me. I would absolutely come again to try more items. Wow the biscuits and gravy were absolutely delightful! The sausage gravy had a good amount of sausage and weren't too salty. The cashier suggested I try both gravies, and I'm glad I did. The biscuits are definitely the best part of the dish, they were soft, moist and chewy. They were so delicious I offered some to our entire table so everyone could try them. For context there were multiple areas for parties of 4 and I found that a little annoying. I visited Pine Street Biscuits on a Sunday at noon. It was decently busy, but it's such a quick turnaround place that we were able to get a table within minutes. I had originally come in very excited to try the Veggie Reggie, but they were out of veggie patties. We ordered The Moneyball with half mushroom and half sausage gravy and the open-faced turkey sandwich special, which came with mushroom gravy. Overall, the biscuits were delicious. Between the two types of gravy, the sausage was my favorite, but the mushroom was a good vegetarian option. Overall, Pine Street Biscuits is a great breakfast option in downtown Reno. I couldn't help but compare them to biscuits I remember from places like KFC years ago or even Knott's Berry Farm--those had a richness and flavor that these didn't quite match. I found this place in its home of origin, Portland Oregon. Loved it there. Was thrilled to see a. Outpost closer to home. And it felt almost exactly the same as the Portland locations. You definitely leave Reno behind for the Pacific Northwest once you step inside the building. I managed to arrive between rush's, but we witnessed several while dining. The line moves quickly. The biscuits are the obvi choice, but don't sleep on the quiche or hashbrowns either. The pimento cheese spread was a fun ode to their southern routes and quite tasty on the fresh biscuit. Crunchy on the outside, soft as a pillow on the inside. There's a reason it's the star of the show. Service was quick. What an absolute banger of a find. It's next to impossible to find a good southern biscuit this far west, but Pine State has it figured out. I tried the McIsley (fried chicken, dill pickles, ground mustard, honey) and nearly passed out from pure bliss. The biscuit is golden brown on the outside while warm and pillowy within. You'll need a fork and knife, but the menagerie of sweet and savory building blocks will come together any which way you deconstruct it. My wife tried The Chatfield (fried chicken, cheddar, bacon, apple butter) and was equally content. The Oregon Marionberry jam was a tart yet sweet customized side, and I much enjoyed the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese to round off the plate. The breading is evenly blasted with seasoning and the tomatoes themselves are plump but not the least bit soggy. Without a doubt though, the service was unmatched. They handled a line going out the front door with class, getting us tables before we even ordered to remove the burden of seat searching and our food getting cold. They checked on the dining area promptly though they didn't have to. The staff's hospitality matches the southern inspo of the food! The atmosphere just wasn't very inviting, and the biggest disappointment was the silverware it was visibly dirty. That's something that's hard to overlook, especially at a sit-down restaurant. The food was decent. and based on my previous visit, I know they can make a good biscuit. It almost feels like this might be one of those places that's better suited for takeout than dining in. The gentleman that took our order must have been having a bad day the service was brass to say the least .
