This is my new favorite restaurant in Reno. Everything is organic and vegan except for the yogurt sauce which they have a vegan option for. I have had Indian food from so many different places and this was by far the best I've ever had. Everything is fresh and you can taste all of the herbs and spices. Sometimes Indian food can be overly greasy but that is not the case here at all. Also, everyone who works here is extremely friendly and awesome. Will definitely be coming back soon! read more

BEST restaurant in Reno, hands down! This place is family owned and operated, and the owner Serj is always warm and welcoming. The food is absolutely incredible and it is different every time. There is no menu; they make nightly offerings and serve you a combination platter with roti. We come here every time we are in Reno and every single dish we've had here is absolutely phenomenal. They are very accommodating to special diets as well, and most of their food is already vegan (and gluten free too I believe). Sometime ago, a pop-up restaurant named Thali served vegetarian North Indian cuisine a couple nights a week at a small cafe, until the cafe closed for good. In the meantime, Bowl Supper Club opened at the West Street Market with the purpose of hosting pop-up meals with a variety of chefs. I'm glad to say that Thali has taken up residence as the supper club's first tenant, and hopefully they'll be able to stick around for a while. The word thali means "plate", but has come to mean a platter of small bowls filled with a few dishes that are meant to complement each other. Thali's take on this is to provide a new meal each weekend; the menu is posted in advance on social media. Organic produce from local farms via the Great Basin Community Food Co-Op is used as much as possible, and each platter is all-you-can-eat with a fixed price ($14.92 per person). Although the actual restaurant space is fairly small, additional seating is available in the common area of the market. While waiting less than a minute to be seated, my wife and I were transfixed watching a pair of ladies making chapati flat bread by hand in the open kitchen. The dough is a simple mix of whole wheat flour and water, patted into thin rounds and fried on the grill, then brushed with a bit of ghee--clarified butter--before being folded and placed on the platter with the meal. We started with a couple cups of hot, housemade chai ($2.80). I've never been a fan of the overly sweet "pumpkin spice" powdered stuff served at nearly every coffeehouse, but this example was the first chai I've ever enjoyed. Very nice blend of spice, tea, and dairy with just a touch of sugar. The little steel bowls on our platters contained: a mix of potatoes, carrots, peas, and garam masala--a spice blend cousin of curry--a red lentil and split mung bean dal with texture similar to split pea soup, a mix of turnips and onion with masala, and raita, a blend of yogurt, tomato, onion, garam masala, and a little salt. It's purpose is to clear the palate between bites of the spicier dishes. A pilaf of basmati rice with onion, pea, cilantro, and cumin took center stage on the platter, and condiments of mint and mango chutneys along with spicy pickled onion, carrot, and jalapeño rounded out the flavor palette. A long-time fan of Indian food, this was the first time I felt I was eating true "home cooking" from the subcontinent. The spices were present but not overstated. The dal and turnip dishes were particularly satisfying, and the rice was among the best I've had from any Indian kitchen. The flatbread was almost unnecessary-yet-delicious. And since it's AYCE, you can keep your favorite items coming until you can't enjoy another bite. I'm typically wary of most Asian desserts, and the bowl of gajar halwa (carrot) and suji halwa (semolina) did give me pause at first. Both the shredded carrot and durum wheat granules were mixed with sugar, ghee, and spices, and each suffered a bit on texture to my western palate. However, they actually began to win me over, and the sticky grain mush was pretty good when washed down with that terrific chai. read more

A delicious variety of vegetarian dishes served on a large platter. I had Gluten Free Corn Rotis that were crisp and delicious to soak up all the goodness. The menu changes daily based on local and organic food. They sell beer and wine as well. I had a Rose that was crisp and sweet. A very kind family are the owners! I was excited to finally be able to check this place out as I'd been hearing lots of good things about it. It's in West Street Market, in the space Bowl used to occupy (R.I.P.). The thali was itself was well presented, with little bowls on the bigger bowl. There was raita, saag, roti, rice, some black eyed peas, and a dal. There was also some chutney along with picked onions and a slice of picked ginger, along with a carrot dessert. I liked the saag, which had just a hint of spiciness to it. The dal was interesting in that it was made from red beans and didn't have the lentils that I've become accustomed to in my experiences with dal. This was my first time having the unleavened roti instead of the airy naan. I don't have any basis for comparison, but the roti seemed good. Bottomless portions are nice, and I definitely took advantage, getting seconds of the saag and the dal. The space was definitely cold on the December evening I was dining, and I felt the food could have been a little warmer. Maybe closer to 3.5 than 4 stars for me. I really like the concept, and I really like when people pick my meal for me (no debating lots of choices) especially when there's a good variety, but the cool temperatures definitely had the food temp a little low. This was my first experience with Indian food and it was exquisite. For about $15 you get an assortment of small Indian dishes and a dessert. The food is vegetarian, but they offer gluten free and vegan options as well. Each dish was full of flavor and we were told that they get the ingredients from the local co-op. Not to mention, it's all you can eat and authentically made! The staff was extremely attentive and they served cucumber water which was a nice touch. Each dish was explained to us and they answered any questions we had about the ingredients since Im a newbie to Indian cuisine. I wish I had tried thali sooner! I was super excited to eat at Thali because I had heard lots of good things. It definitely lived up to the hype, everything was super tasty and unlike most experiences with Indian food, it all felt a little lighter and healthier. We both went with the vegetarian option, although I think aside from the raita, it was all vegan. We had a super tasty dal, a zucchini curry, and a potato/tofu curry. For dessert, a light rice pudding with hints of rosewater and cardamom, wowza! Oh and the whole wheat roti with hints of coconut and ooooh and the tamarind chutney with banana, yuuuuummmm! So remember how I said how the food feels lighter and healthier, well you'll still leave feeling weighted down, especially if you eat three helpings of everything, which is exactly what I did. It's hard to stop when everything tastes so good and their ladling out hot servings of deliciousness. So here's my only complaint which honestly is more of a personal issue... when the server came and brought our dishes and he was explaining what each dish was, he ended with "...and this is our potato paneer curry, the paneer is made from tofu." What he should've said was this is our potato tofu curry, I wouldn't have been mad, I like tofu. But to go out of your way to masquerade as if you've made this paneer from soy milk (when it clearly has the side hatch marks of a tofu container) is not only a lie but annoying and unnecessary. The restaurant is open only thru Thursday to Sunday that too between 5 PM to 9 PM. The only vegetarian food available is Thali meals including Roti. The food is prepared well by a Punjabi lady and has a South Indian flavour. This is the only pure vegetarian joint in the entire Tahoe/Reno area and hence unavoidable for those looking for it. They serve you a large plate with little bowls of different dishes. Here is a sample menu: "Thali menu for 3.25 & 3.26. Organic frequency with decency. -Basmati Rice, cumin seeds, red onion. -Roti. Atta flour (stoneground whole-wheat), butter. Vegan option available. -Mint chutney. -Pickled onions & peppers. -Mushroom masala. (GF) -Eggplant & Potato bharta. (V,GF) -Moong dal. (V,GF) -Riata. Northern Punjabi yogurt with whole milk, cilantro, red onion, tomato. (GF) -Bassan. Garbanzo bean and cashew flour, cane sugar, GHEE!, heavy cream.(GF) Love." The recipes and cooks are from a family from India and the food is so so good. They don't give you silverware, and encourage you to use your hands. That was interesting the first few times for me, but I really enjoy it now. We heard rave reviews of this place and checked it out tonight! They ran out of one of their subjis so we only got the dhal, eggplant, rice, roti, raitha (they had vegan raitha for me!), and something like kheer. It was all pretty bland, but did taste homemade. I would come here again only if I wanted something less spicy and had an upset stomach They also overcharge like crazy. Don't think they charged us less despite running out of food. read more

I really liked the vegetarian thali. You have 2 options - vegetarian or vegan. The waiter will ask you if you have any food allergies and bring over the food. It's a pre- set all you can eat menu. The place was clean, not bad customer service, but the food was not good enough that I would be willing to pay for it again. Ah-maze-ing! Food is very fresh and the service is friendly. They make you feel right at home. The dishes are home-cook inspired and made with the freshest ingredients. You'll find that the menu changes throughout the day depending on what is available from local farmers, what has already been sold out, and what the chef comes up with.
