Had to visit this spot since I live nearby and seen some videos online about it. Let me tell you this spot is the one. It's nothing crazy just really simple fresh ingredients. I ordered the 9. house special with half egg noodles half ho fun noodles with the broth on the side with extra pork skin on the side. Man everything paired so well together. All the textures when you mix it up with some chili oil, hoison, and some chili sauce is top tier. I definitely recommend ordering it that way. The thai tea was perfect not to sweet not to creamy. The crispy shrimp rolls came with a sweet sauce & i personally didnt like the sauce but dip it in the half hoisin half chili sauce and it was way better paired. The service was quick i got my food within like 10mins from ordering. The restaurant itself is not as big so may have to wait if your coming peak times. This is the place for noodles and soup! I got the house special with the broth on the side , and the waitress recommended trying both noodles. Great decision. Asking for crispy pork on the side is a pro move as well! You can add extra spices as well, the house chili is a must try. I enjoyed the broth at my own pace and the noodles dry was a nice touch. I used to come here a lot as a child, but then we moved.... And now, I am back to coming here a lot. Delicious. So delicious. And the fried shrimp rolls? Amazing.... This place used to be a good place to go for egg noodles and Com Ga Roti. Sadly it is not what it used to be anymore. Quality of the dish is gone. We ordered both the egg noodles and Com Ga Roti. The shrimps were mushy tasted like it was about to go bad. The chicken for the rice dish cold inside like they had it in the refrigerator and took it out for a quick warm up that left the inside still cold. The taste of the chicken is not the same as it used to be. The fish cake is suck beyond my imagination. read more

I love coming here, they can always provide a good comfort meal when I'm feeling down. As an appetizer I always get the fried shrimp roll, the sweet sauce and the pickled veggies that come with are super tasty. I always debate between the chicken and rice dish (add Chinese sausage to the rice and thank me later) or the half half combination house soup, sometimes I get it dry and it's delicious when you mix the right amount of sauce. Also ask for extra pork skin if you know you know!! They offer an assortment of sauces for you to dress up your plates/bowls and pickled chili and sate to spice it up as well. Service was a little rude as well but I wouldn't really expect anything more. Hahaha. The place was packed And there was a little bit of a line. My family has been dining here for more than a decade, and it has long been one of our favorite local spots. The restaurant is now under new ownership, and while the food quality remains about the same, the pricing experience has changed significantly. What disappointed us most was discovering an automatic 18% service charge added to the bill without any clear notice beforehand. In addition, there is a 3.5% fee for paying by credit card. These extra charges made the final bill much higher than expected. For a party of five, our total came to $145 for five entrées and one side order of shrimp egg rolls--nearly $30 per person. While we still enjoy the food, the lack of transparency regarding the added fees left a negative impression and made the meal feel far less affordable than it used to be. read more

Came here Sunday afternoon to get our noodle fix. This was the first time in a while that I saw the place was packed inside. We ordered the usual #9 ho fun with an order of shrimp roll to share. Service was pretty good while busy. I see they got a new lady working here now. Noodles were on point and the pork skin made it that much better. This restaurant has been around for 30 yrs.(1994-95) & has been a long time favorite of my brothers. Service is fast, so don't be put off by crowds. Orders: #9 House Special Ho Fun noodle $13 a pho loaded with various meatballs & the broth is flavorful. My brother's go to pho. #13 Beef Satay Ho Fun $14 a nutty spicy pho noodle that had tender slices of beef & great flavor. Sometimes the ratio of satay to broth can be tricky, but Thanh Ky has created a nice balance. A reasonable bowl of pho that satisfies. read more

Have not been here for several decades. Had an errand to do around the neighborhood and decided to lunch here. Sure brought back memories of younger days as i walked in, the same folks that used to take my order is still here but aged. Same layout same tables and chairs? Exact same staff as it seems- wow such nostalgia. I ordered my usual, egg gravy with shrimp over ho fun. Food came out quickly and it was so good. Just like how it used to be if I remembered correctly.. haha Its been a while but good flavor is good flavor, i thoroughly enjoyed my dish, licked my plate clean :) Great to be back here after so many years, good food great memories. Thanh Ky used to be my favorite noodle shop, but I think they may have changed owners because it just doesn't hit the same anymore. The noodles now tend to be overcooked, and the soup has become saltier than before. The overall flavor and quality just aren't what they used to be. They now accept cards with an additional 4% fee, and they've upgraded their drink selection, which is nice. Overall, it's still an okay spot, but I miss how it used to taste before the changes. read more

O boy, Oakland. It has gotten really bad since the late 90's when I took a few classes at Laney College. Thanh Ky is known for hu tieu, chieu chau dry noodles. I opted to go for their #47 House Special Crispy Noodles $15 instead. This was delicious. So good. I asked them to make it a bit drier with less sauce. My personal preference is a more crispy noodles. Too much gravy will ruin this dish. Service was excellent. They speak Cantonese as well as other languages. The kitchen was fast. I've been to Vien Huong and this place is way better. I don't get the hype about Vien Huong. Thanh Ky wins in flavor and price. My go to order is #1 with soup on the side. I get half egg noodles and half ho-fun. The bowl comes with shredded chicken, ground pork, shrimp, beef ball, pork ball, and fish cake. I get it without fish cake though. I also always order extra fried pork skin. The fried pork skin takes the meal to another level. Another thing I like about this place is they use my favorite sriracha. My favorite sriracha is a Thai brand that has a slight tangy sour flavor, which is different from the Huy Fong sriracha. read more

The food is delicious. Anything you order on the menu is first rate with generous portions. I had the noodle soup and diced chicken in bean sauce over rice. Thanh Ky is my favorite Teochew noodle spot in the Bay! No, Vien Huong cannot compare no matter what anyone tells me! I'll admit I am biased - Thanh Ky just has such a nostalgia factor to it. I feel like every Chinese Viet kid growing up in East Oakland has grown up with Thanh Ky. But regardless of all my biases, Thanh Ky truly makes the best Teochew style beef satay noodle soup! I literally cannot find it anywhere else (except Vien Huong, which is not as good). The beefy peanuty soup is soooo rich and sooo yummy with the smooth and soft thick rice noodles. When I heard of some of the best noodle soup restaurants in Oakland, Thanh Ky was among them. In comparison to noodle soup restaurants such as Vien Huong, I must say Thanh Ky is very different in regards to the flavor of its broth and noodles. I ordered their House Special Wonton Soup. Their broth is very light and a little bland for my liking. However, the fried pork rinds that are in the soup added a lot of flavor and crunch to the dish. The variety of meatballs and meat were delicious, and the wontons were very filled. Although Vien Huong is still my favorite noodle soup restaurant in Oakland Chinatown, I still occasionally think about Thanh Ky's fried pork rinds. Tip: ask for extra fried pork rinds on the side. read more

If you grew up Chinese in Oakland, you definitely grew up eating here. My spouse is half Chinese/ Vietnamese and green up eating here with his parents. It's definitely a hole in the wall. Great service and food comes out quickly. We both got the house special noodle with ho fun - Dry. There's fishcake, beef balls, shrimp, ground pork and fried pork fat. It also comes with sauté and jalapeño's on the side. If you come here I definitely recommend getting your soup dry, it has way more flavor - ALSO EXTRA FRIED PORK FAT (it's a must)! If you like kidney's like my spouse does, I would ask for kidneys in your noodles. He also loves the sautéed kidneys but they sell out quickly in the day! The food is always consistent and delicious. I think TK is better than VH but that will always be the long live debate. read more

House special ho fun with fried pork rinds on top! Must I say more?! Man this has always been my childhood favoriteeeee! So yummy and so homey. The flavors of the soup, the texture of the noodles and the delicious seafood meat toppings! I like mine with soup and extra jalapeños! I wish they had the vinegar jalapeños on the table but regular is fine too. I recommend dipping all your toppings in hoisin and sriracha! The service is also amazing. The aunties here are so nice and so cute. Me and the boyfriend were sitting in a 2 seat table and the auntie kept asking if we wanted to move to a 4 seat table for more room and we said no but she kept insisting so we moved. Haha it was definitely more spacious and comfy having more room. She also warned everyone in the restaurant that it was street cleaning on the side streets and told everyone to move or they'll be ticketed, she's SO SWEET!!! Cash only! That noodle soup is something I keep coming back for every time I'm in Oakland extra chicaronnes too good

Haven't came here in a while and was craving the duck leg noods. Same place but their service has gotten a little bit better than before and prices are now average $10.50 for a bowl of noodles (asking for large will be about +$4.50). It is still cash only and the duck leg noodle is still as good as it was before. Portions are the same and the soup is the right amount of flavor. I'm used to asking for fried pork skin in my broth but for those who are first timers, I highly recommend you ask for it! It's so good!! Service - same as many vietnamese resturants around, you have to go up to the register to pay after you're done. read more
