I came here for lunch on a Sunday and we were seated immediately. Inside has lots of seating and the decor is welcoming. The menu was massive, but we placed our orders and waited about 20 minutes before it came. The baked pork chop was our favorite. A no frills staple in Chinatown. It's definitely one of those "find yourself" there kind of restaurants - perfect after a night out, or as an option if you're too lazy to whip anything up. Service is really quick, and they specialize in Canto style diner/cafe food. I had a massive craving for baked porkchop over spaghetti, so I decided to give Shooting Star a try. I'm not really a one entree kind of girl, so I added the baked chicken with cream sauce over rice to my order as well. I really loved the way both looked upon delivery however taste wise, they were both just okay. Both had good amounts of cheese baked on top, and the crispy bits were delish! The chicken in cream sauce was pretty bland, and the rice just tasted soggy. The chicken was very tender, but didn't really have much seasoning to it. I would not get this again. The baked pork chop over spaghetti was better than the chicken but something just felt off. There was a smell to it that I just couldn't get over and then I realized, it's because they put a big sprig of rosemary on both entrees. While the rosemary does help with presentation, I think the flavor steamed into the food. I suggest they stop with the rosemary, and just use parsley or something for plating. The pork chop was flavorful and tender, but the sauce felt a bit thin and just didn't pair well with the spaghetti for me. I probably would have liked this one more over rice tbh. I originally was going to give them 3 stars based upon the taste of the food, but I felt it was necessary to give them 4 stars instead because the portions were great, the items were packaged to go really well, they were quick to prepare my Grubhub order and my food was still pretty hot when it delivered. This my favorite Hong Kong cafe/restaurant to eat at. They have the best Hong Kong style food in Oakland Chinatown. My go to is usually the Mongolian beef with white rice or the Mongolian beef style gravy over chow ho fun. Their clay pot rice with Chinese sausage and lap yuk is also another go to, just that it takes a little longer to make. If you're craving desserts', they have plenty, from boba drinks to egg puffs, and lots more. I always come here whether for dine in or take out. After the Oakland Half/10k, a large group of tennis friends and a few plus ones needed a place to eat! We walked a bit here from the finish line because someone recommended it. The menu was enormous. We were intimidated and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options here! I also liked the decor and star theme. Prices are affordable and this is also near a BART station! I got the Oakland Restaurant Week set menu (as did a few others), though I was initially eyeing the congee. I enjoyed my cheesy Baked Pork Chop which was delicious, though it came with a lot more rice than baked pork chop. The only good thing about this place is that it is open late at night. They have an encyclopedia of food as their menu. That's a lot of options, however, they do not really specialize in any dish in particular, which makes all of their dishes very mid and just bad. My recent visit here was just for dessert, but I've been here a few times before for their food. I forgot what I ordered for the desserts (pictured), but they were very bland. Their food is also very mid, with their baked spaghetti probably being their "best", though it's still a 5/10 rating dish. If you are out late at night and need a place to chill and hang with friends, this is probably the only spot around that's available. The beef stew is okay I definitely would recommend the curry beef stew more. The green beans are good! It's ~$15 for an entire lunch set which includes soup + salad + a (basic) drink of your choice. They also sell milk / fruit tea and different types of smoothies but that would be an extra cost. There is also this special: $48 for 3 entrees of your choice from a list. It's pretty worthwhile. Enough food for 2 people though maybe not enough for 3-4. Doesn't come with rice so you have to order those as well for +$2 each. I could eat a few bowls of rice with the curry. The curry was savory and a tiny bit of sweetness. It's delicious. The popular baked pork chop with rice was good but not amazing. It wasn't my favorite. The pork chop was cut thin and clearly not that fresh. The texture of the meat was a bit dry and lacked the texture of a fresh piece of chop. We also ordered the pork chop in black pepper sauce with pasta. The flavor was ok, and same problem with the pork chop. The type of pasta wasn't the Italian ones just wanted to point out--it was less starchy and more like soft noodle. There was no texture and I could basically slurp it down without chewing. Very bad experience. I went with my partner hoping to have a nice time, but it ended up being really uncomfortable. For an $11 meal, they were basically trying to force me to leave a $16 tip just for handing me the food and a cup of water. I understand tipping is common, but it shouldn't be mandatory, especially in a situation like that. In the end, the manager said it was okay not to pay that amount, but their attitude completely changed after that, and they didn't even want to give me the food anymore. I felt really disrespected. Even so, I still left a few dollars out of respect, not because I agreed with what happened. People need to understand that sometimes you just can't afford to leave a big tip, but that doesn't mean you don't appreciate the service. Also ordered the roasted duck roll, but it never came to the table, neither did staff for a long period of time. Well, actually the dish eventually came, right around the same time we got the check (cuz we had an event to catch), but does that really count?!? I've come here several times to eat in person as well and service is decent. Everyone is nice and the food came out in a timely manner.
