Date: 4/1/2026 Time: 8:00 PM 59° Cloudy I always wanted to order their food to go. It took me a while to peruse their extensive menu and decide what I want for late dinner. It is a cold night - definitely comfort food and soup. Then I also like that Shooting Star Cafe closes at midnight. It is one of the restaurants that is opened late. Most restaurants in Oakland Chinatown close around 6:00 PM. Ambiance: nice atmosphere...the light fixtures and the dining area exude one of comfort. I know the next time I'm in the area I would dine in for lunch with my brother. Eats: Salted fish chicken fried rice (hom yee gai chow fahn) and hot 'n sour soup. The last time I had this fried rice dish was over seven years ago. The fried rice and soup were on point. Customer service was very good. I was told the wait time for my fried rice and soup would be ready in 15 to 20 minutes. Yes, it was ready in 20 minutes. Finally, what I find unique was the horoscope drinks (slushy or bubble blash). Well, I am eager to have the Sagittarius slushy.
I came here for lunch on a Sunday and we were seated immediately. Inside has lots of seating and the decor is welcoming. The menu was massive, but we placed our orders and waited about 20 minutes before it came. The baked pork chop was our favorite. They are not skimpy with the pork serving, and there was also a lot of rice. The sauce tasted a little funky? Maybe because of the rosemary? but it was still good. The baked seafood was fine, it was light and had lots of proteins. But it needed salt and pepper for sure, some more seasoning to add flavor. Overall I had a good time!
Best baked chicken over rice with white sauce no doubt! Super flavorful and nostalgic with great ratio of protein to carb. The lemon tea, soup, and salad are also really good and make the whole meal filling for a reasonable price! Parking can be an issue but street meters are scattered around it.
Ordered the baked pork chops with rice, the pork chops weren't too dry, still surprisingly crunchy despite being baked with cheese. The fried rice underneath didn't have much flavor, was essentially white rice, but it soaks up the flavor of the pork chop and sauce very well! The sauce was a great blend of sweet and savory, overall a filling meal!
Had Jury Duty so decided to come to Chinatown for lunch. This place had a lunch special menu - where it comes with the entree item, soup, salad, and a choice of drink. I got the garlic chicken steak which was delicious! The portion size was huge! I was full from half of it. The only thing to complain about is that the Hong Kong milk tea is not sweet. I asked for condensed milk to add to it, but I didn't know that it was an extra charge ($0.75) until I paid for it.

I forgot to take pictures of all the menus . For the first time, we ordered the family meal. $55 for 3 dishes and soup. Plus $12 for fried rice ( a must-try) and $2 for steamed rice. This is the only place in the bay area that actually has Hong Kong styled fried rice. My Uncle has been looking all over the Bay Area for it. It reminds my dad and my uncle of his childhood in Hong Kong. Everything was delicious and generous portions. Love the afternoon tea specials and the special lunch sets. Service is also quick and friendly . They speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
This spot is solid for HK Cafe food and great for small groups. I prefer ordering off of their lunch specials menu, it comes with an entree, soup of the day, salad, and hot drink. Their entrees are delicious, I've liked every entree that I've tried here. My favorite drink is the hot milk tea with condensed milk. It's typically around $20-25/person for a meal here. The service is okay on average, but I come here for the food not the service. Baked Pork Chop Rice (5/5) - great fried rice on the bottom, tomato sauce, pork chop was tender. Generous portions! Curry Beef Stew (4/5) - swapped the rice for spaghetti, there was garlic + spaghetti stir fried, beef was delicious! I personally do not like spaghetti, and prefer curry with rice. Curry Ox Tongue (5/5) - Delicious. Tender ox tongue. This is my favorite dish from Shooting Star! Beef Chow Fun (3/5) - Not enough wok power but decent. Hot Milk Tea w/ condensed milk (5/5) - This is what the og HK Style milk tea tastes like.
A no frills staple in Chinatown. It's definitely one of those "find yourself" there kind of restaurants - perfect after a night out, or as an option if you're too lazy to whip anything up. Service is really quick, and they specialize in Canto style diner/cafe food. I like their rice noodle and fried dishes (really crispy and evenly breaded), but heads up that their food is generally a lot greasier than other restaurants, and maybe not the best option for the oil adverse.
I had a massive craving for baked porkchop over spaghetti, so I decided to give Shooting Star a try. I'm not really a one entree kind of girl, so I added the baked chicken with cream sauce over rice to my order as well. I really loved the way both looked upon delivery however taste wise, they were both just okay. Both had good amounts of cheese baked on top, and the crispy bits were delish! The chicken in cream sauce was pretty bland, and the rice just tasted soggy. The chicken was very tender, but didn't really have much seasoning to it. I would not get this again. The baked pork chop over spaghetti was better than the chicken but something just felt off. There was a smell to it that I just couldn't get over and then I realized, it's because they put a big sprig of rosemary on both entrees. While the rosemary does help with presentation, I think the flavor steamed into the food. I suggest they stop with the rosemary, and just use parsley or something for plating. The pork chop was flavorful and tender, but the sauce felt a bit thin and just didn't pair well with the spaghetti for me. I probably would have liked this one more over rice tbh. I originally was going to give them 3 stars based upon the taste of the food, but I felt it was necessary to give them 4 stars instead because the portions were great, the items were packaged to go really well, they were quick to prepare my Grubhub order and my food was still pretty hot when it delivered. They even included high quality plastic utensils! Their menu is pretty large so I'll be back to give their other entrees and desserts a try.
A staple HK cafe eatery in Oakland Chinatown. I remember seeing them open for the first time when I was 10, but I have eaten here more recently. Their food is tasty but not like overwhelming with culinary finesse. It's more of a comfort food place. Service is adequate and receptive. Our waiter was attentive to our needs and got us the boxes/plastic ware we needed. Ambiance was very calm and chill. Loved the paint and nostalgic aesthetic.
My flight going to Oakland got delayed, I didn't land until almost 10pm. My friend and I didn't eat dinner yet and we were starving so we came to this HK style cafe which opens late. The food was delicious and hit the spot for late night comfort food. Where I live doesn't have good HK style cafes so I always request it whenever I visit my friend up in Oakland. The restaurant was clean and brightly lit so we felt safe even though it was late night in Oakland Chinatown. The service was excellent. We've been coming to this place for years.

I have been here so many times so I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet. This place is quite a quintessential restaurant to eat at in Oakland Chinatown. They are open late and have plenty of seating and a huge menu to select everything you'd want. This time around we got mixed fruits in a crepe, strawberry ice cream with an eggette, ovaltine, milk tea and a baked chicken and rice to go for tomorrow's lunch. The desserts were decent and tasted like what you'd think they'd taste like. The drinks were soothing and the baked chicken and rice was the star of the show. It was savory with every grain of rice not going to waste with how delicious it is and the chicken was oh so, tender. The baked rice dishes are where they're at. The duck roll was also perfection. The duck was tender and the roll was crispy and chewy. Yummy! They have a $10 minimum spend per person so plan accordingly! read more

Very interesting menu. Order through UberEats and was pleased with the food and desserts. Pork chop with macaroni was great pork chop was juicy and tasty and sauce tasted good as well. First time for me going to this place. I loved the food and prices are reasonable. Portions as I can see is enough to share, but I'm greedy and ate all of my bowl of won ton and noodles please try this place. Will be back real soon read more

They have ALOT to choose from, if I'm being honest I completely forgot what I got when I ate here. But it sure was amazing. Being in the heart of the Oakland Chinatown the inside is very traditional. Service is nice, our server sat us down and got my orders pretty fast. read more

Everything was pretty much on point except for the steak. I ordered it medium rare, but it came out very dry, and I had to wait 15-20 minutes for it. The beef stew was quite good, a bid salty for me though . The meals average about $30 per person. The Angus steak is supposed to include a hot drink, salad, and soup. However, the waiter told me I couldn't get the salad and soup, even though I was waiting at the restaurant for takeout. read more
I took a long time to write a review for this restaurant, but I'm finally writing it. It's pretty big inside, can fit maybe 45+ people if I'm not wrong. This my favorite Hong Kong cafe/restaurant to eat at. They have the best Hong Kong style food in Oakland Chinatown. My go to is usually the Mongolian beef with white rice or the Mongolian beef style gravy over chow ho fun. Their clay pot rice with Chinese sausage and lap yuk is also another go to, just that it takes a little longer to make. If you're craving desserts', they have plenty, from boba drinks to egg puffs, and lots more. I always come here whether for dine in or take out. Definitely recommend this for anyone craving late night dinner, snacks, or desserts. read more

Salt n pepper chicken wings, very hot when it came out, wished it had more salt n pepper vs. batter 4. Fried rice. Welcome to the wet n wild world of Hong Kong Kafés. Some BackroomS version of Denny's in a fever dream. A psychotic kaleidoscope. The kinda place that mesmerizes those of us who once looked up to Hunter Thompson and Anthony Bourdain. Long after we've turned out backs on those vile figures, the love of a place like Shooting Star Cafe remains. A Leviathan menu features Chinese American canon: coconut walnut prawns, Mongolian beef. Also an array of hot clay pot. There's even a page dedicated to burgers and club sandwiches (insert Mitch Hedberg joke on club sandwiches). Amidst all that arcadia, what you really want are the Western, i.e. American, dinners. How does another culture interpret our products back to us? I mean, that's really the only interesting thing about the Beatles, after all. I got the pork chops baked with macaroni in cheese and tomato sauce. The chops, cooked to a nicety. The sauce, plain rubbish. But that don't matter though does it? The idea's what counts. Also ordered chicken gizzards and they weren't too foul, pardon the pun. And the jasmine milk tea was so floral, so tannic, so refreshing. read more
For some reason I could only find one food picture before we started eating, so I just added pictures from the actual menu...Which is exactly what we received. The Shooting Star Cafe is great! Luckily it was only three blocks from our hotel and open late. Everything we ordered came quickly and tasted even better. With such an extensive menu, we didn't know exactly what to choose. What we did choose was excellent! Service 9/10 Bathrooms 9/10 Ambiance 10/10 Cleanliness 9/10 Food 10/10 Value 10/10 Will I Return? Yes! read more

No frills Chinese Cantonese food. Huge menu and the food is fast. It's not fancy but gets the job done an and it's open late. -amazing dessert read more
After the Oakland Half/10k, a large group of tennis friends and a few plus ones needed a place to eat! We walked a bit here from the finish line because someone recommended it. The menu was enormous. We were intimidated and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options here! I also liked the decor and star theme. Prices are affordable and this is also near a BART station! I got the Oakland Restaurant Week set menu (as did a few others), though I was initially eyeing the congee. I enjoyed my cheesy Baked Pork Chop which was delicious, though it came with a lot more rice than baked pork chop. It also came with Garden Green Salad, Pot Stickers, soup, and mango sago for dessert. Everything was good and we were all happy! I'd be back! I was impressed with how the service handled our large group, and the restaurant was very large with multiple rooms. read more
The only good thing about this place is that it is open late at night. They have an encyclopedia of food as their menu. That's a lot of options, however, they do not really specialize in any dish in particular, which makes all of their dishes very mid and just bad. My recent visit here was just for dessert, but I've been here a few times before for their food. I forgot what I ordered for the desserts (pictured), but they were very bland. Their food is also very mid, with their baked spaghetti probably being their "best", though it's still a 5/10 rating dish. If you are out late at night and need a place to chill and hang with friends, this is probably the only spot around that's available. Other than that, this restaurant is not worth going to. read more
They seriously have everything. From steaks to Szechuan goods, you name it. We loved this place. It's not cheap with what we ordered, but it's worth the price. They are not outstanding as they have everything, but they are good enough for nostalgia. The people here are chill and laid/back, a typical family owned business. The place is cute, nostalgic, and a bit outdated. I would come back for trying more things. read more

Have been coming here for more than a decade probably. This place hits the spot especially if you're craving comfort HK cafe food. The beef stew is okay I definitely would recommend the curry beef stew more. The green beans are good! It's ~$15 for an entire lunch set which includes soup + salad + a (basic) drink of your choice. They also sell milk / fruit tea and different types of smoothies but that would be an extra cost. There is also this special: $48 for 3 entrees of your choice from a list. It's pretty worthwhile. Enough food for 2 people though maybe not enough for 3-4. Doesn't come with rice so you have to order those as well for +$2 each. There is some paid street parking, you can also park in the parking garage closer to the Chinatown public library. read more

Came here during lunchtime on a weekday and this place was already pretty full. My friend recommended this place and finally I got to try a few dishes here. The STAR of the lunch was the Curry Beef Brisket with rice. I highly recommend this-- flavorful, delicious curry with plenty of pieces of brisket. They add green bell pepper to the curry. I could eat a few bowls of rice with the curry. The curry was savory and a tiny bit of sweetness. It's delicious. The popular baked pork chop with rice was good but not amazing. It wasn't my favorite. The pork chop was cut thin and clearly not that fresh. The texture of the meat was a bit dry and lacked the texture of a fresh piece of chop. We also ordered the pork chop in black pepper sauce with pasta. The flavor was ok, and same problem with the pork chop. The type of pasta wasn't the Italian ones just wanted to point out--it was less starchy and more like soft noodle. There was no texture and I could basically slurp it down without chewing. The lunch combo comes with salad, soup and a choice of drink. I would definitely come back for their other dishes. They have an extensive menu. read more
One of our hangout spots with good friends late in the evening . Wait time today was longer than expected. It seems like everyone is here on a Saturday night for dinner. Service during this visit was mediocre not attentive , understandably, busy night for all the staff . Our group's favorite dish were pork ribs, bitter melon with black bean sauce cooked in clay pot. We could order another plate of their crispy tofu with black pepper & jalapeno. Follow by stirfry ong choy with fermented tofu . who would've thought fermented tofu goes so well together with the leafy vegetables. Hainan chicken dipping sauce were so delicious except I didn't like that. The chicken was refrigerator cold, I know that's how it was supposed to serve . Our two least favorite dishes were the shrimp vermicelli clay pot & the roasted duck noodle soup. MM mom NBC Of course we finish off with waffle balls with fresh fruits, light airy, a little fluff, and the Asian says not too sweet. It's a good thing. read more
We always get to go when we are in Oakland Chinatown! We love their baked pork chop rice. Different restaurants have their own sauce recipe and shooting star sauce is the one I love the most!! Their milk tea is very good too. Strong tea and perfect sweetness. We have tried their egg puffs and they are very crispy and tasty as well!! read more

Got a couple lunch plate combos with rice (for dinner), short rib with black pepper sauce, and prawn with scrambled eggs. Nothing special about these dishes, but they were good enough, the short rib could have used a little more spice, and the prawn and egg plate could have used a little less rice (not gonna complain about too much rice though). Also ordered the roasted duck roll, but it never came to the table, neither did staff for a long period of time. Well, actually the dish eventually came, right around the same time we got the check (cuz we had an event to catch), but does that really count?!? I'm pretty sure they forgot to put the order in for this item, we finally got it after notifying two different staff members who weren't apologetic at all. The dish wasn't even worth the wait, the ingredients drenched in hoisin sauce, so sweet I could barely taste the duck. The wrap was also too chewy. Besides having a large menu and a clean and casual setting, I was not impressed with this place. It isn't horrible, but my recent experience here just left a bad taste in my mouth. read more
