Stopped by here on a whim while in route to Duc Huong around the corner, and I'm so glad I did. Upon entering I was met with the most vibrant display of xôi (sticky rice) ever. I of course chose the one with the most visible coconut flakes, which I enjoyed for dessert later in the day, and it was sooooo yummy. Some things to be aware of when visiting here are that there's a $20 minimum spend to pay with credit card, and prices are not listed on display items, so you either have to come prepared with cash or commit to buying enough items to meet the threshold. Not a dealbreaker for me because of how good the food is, and I'd definitely like to come back here for more treats next time I visit San Jose. read more

I happened to see this place on Yelp and decided to try it since I'm in the neighborhood. They have so many different items I didn't have all the time to take more photos. I failed to limit the number of items to try as I already planned a whole other menu for lunch. I tried the sweet potato cakes, mung bean rice balls, che, goi cuon, and banh cuon. I liked everything except the goi cuon. I didn't notice they only had shrimp and mostly veggie tables. The peanut sauce was very odd texture something that makes it gooey. The prices were not posted anywhere I could tell. The rice balls are 75 cents each. The Che is $2.25. The goi cuon is $7.75. The sweet potato cakes are 3 for $10. The only people that spoke some English were the cashiers. I would go back to try other items like flan or the Chinese donut or other che or xoi. read more

Bánh mì Over Vietnamese sandwich shop located in SJ's Little Saigon neighborhood, that's been here since as far back as I can recall for *at least* twenty years. They used to be my favorite bánh mì shop in the area, but they quickly been overshadowed lately by my current king of bánh mì, the nearby Đức Hương. The Good: *Unlike Đức Hương there's never much of a line. I tried to go to DH today but the line outside was insane, so I opted here and there was almost zero line. *Sandwiches are great and super generous with the meat. *Customer service here used to be quite terrible, but today was downright pleasant. *Prices are a little pricier (±$2) than DH, but the sandwiches were larger and more meaty. *Not just sandwiches, but the entire oeuvre of Vietnamese goodies and snacks. From spring rolls to xôi (colored sticky rice) and everything in-between. *No longer just "Cash Only," as they now take credit cards with $20/min purchase. The Meh: *Bread doesn't seem as fresh as DH, who make their bread fresh in-house. The Ugly: *There were at least three drunk bums lying in the middle of the sidewalk ifo this place. I've always wanted to try Thanh Son Hien especially after going to the spot down in SoCal. The shop has such a diverse and wonderful variety of Vietnamese dishes and goodies. The banh mi is delicious as the bread is so spot on to authentic Vietnamese bread. I loved all of the sticky rice and sweet deserts. There coconut milk paired with their desserts are fragrant and give a sweet pairing to the desserts. The egg rolls were by far my favorite. They were fried to perfection and the flavor was wineries. We were looking for a place to grab some che after dinner while visiting San Jose. I did a quick yelp search and found this place that was nearby. When we went in, the place was super busy and I was amazed by all the different types of xoi, che, and viet food they had. They also sell banh mi here too! We ended up buying a lot of xoi (sticky rice) and che especially with the special promotion they had, which was buy 5 xoi and get 1 free or buy 10 che + xoi and get 1 free. We also tried their pandan mung bean milk which was the BEST we've ever had. So much better than the ones at boba shops as those were overly sweet and didn't have enough mung bean in it. Thanh Son Hien Khanh has all the intangibles I want in a Vietnamese bakery: endless variety, locally minded patrons, and zero pretension with a family-run vibe. It's an ideal spot for a snack meal on the go and is situated in the heart of San Jose's Vietnam Town. (#1) The place feels a bit frozen in time with a 80s/90s retro feel and interior is really just being surrounded by pre-packaged foods all around. I think the staff is nice, but ordering in Vietnamese would be supremely helpful. For our non-tieng viet speaking friends, pointing works wonders. A lot of folks are here for the banh mi, which is pretty decent. I think their strongest suit is the rest of the items in the store: banh cuon, che, tofu, banh bao, and goi cuon. A lot of this stuff runs out in the afternoon and there can be a crowd here at any time. I love finishing everything with a nice tall Viet iced coffee bottle, which is near perfect during their hot summers. Come in the morning for the freshest selection. I don't love that the prices aren't listed on most of the boxed items and that they tend to close early sometimes. My family has been coming here for ages. We love to pick up the fresh made tofu and soft tofu dessert with ginger sauce. The tofu is cool smooth and silky everything you would want in a light dessert. We especially love to get the pandan and taro jellies. Often times we get two boxes because the jelly is so good! It's bouncy and slightly sweet making for a light bite. They also have a bunch of premade foods to pick up making for a great grab and go experience. This place does have a lot of vietnamese snacks and desserts. However, please be careful. None of their items have price tags on them. It is very unethical to have no price tags on any of the food wrapped in plastic wraps. They can literally charge you any price and you wouldnt even be aware of it. Lady charged me $72 for 4 items and I had her recount again and it turns out to be $52 It is really unethical if they are trying to scam people like this. It is a small Vietnam shop so they do not have high end cash machines and they are manually entering all of the items one by one. There can easily be a mistake this way so be careful and always double check if the total is reasonable. read more

CASH ONLY. There's so much food in this place! From rice rolls to desserts to different kinds of tofu. There's a wide selection of vietnamese food I've never seen. The only caveat is that it's cash only and you don't know the prices, but most of the dishes are $8-$15. I got the banana leaf small wrapped items which were tapioca starch savoury cakes with dried shrimp. Loved the texture, came with a fish sauce (nuoc nam). Would recommend. The beef rolls were costed in sesame oil, similar to dimsum rice rolls and spring rolls had a baby. The sauce was sweeter and inside are herbs. The corn husk item near the front is sticky rice with some textured yellow mung bean paste. It was not too sweet, on the beanier side. I recommend coming here to try new kinds of vietnamese food. A lot of niche items you wouldn't find at regular restaraunts. Just prepare a lot of cash and know its more of a to go place :). Large meat portions, juicy, authentic banh mi! One of the better banh mi I've had for a cheap price. It's a nguyen-nguyen (win-win) deal. I love coming here for che and other Vietnamese snacks. I love all their che, but I don't know why they don't all come with coconut milk. Some do, some don't. I wish they brought back they full service bar where they scoop the che fresh for you. That have so many other types of snacks and food. Banh beo, banh cuon, banh bo, cha lua, pate chaud, all different types of xoi. I tried their banh min here and it was okay. Plenty of meat and pate, which was good. But I wasn't a fan of their bread. Your typical Vietnamese food to go place. Nothing is priced, though you can ask them how much things are and they'll probably just shout you a price. As far as fresh? Doubtful for some of their products. But that is typical. They try to get rid of the desserts towards the end of the day with their "deals". I'm hoping the Che at least are made the day of. I go there because it's one of the few places I can find the jello dessert. Taste is sometimes bland or kinda taste like jackfruit. Which is weird for what I thought was typically coconut and pandan. Their pennyworth drink tastes either really bitter or like water. Lee's is actually better. And I hate that there's no date on them. Sweet sticky rice is ok. Could use some more taste. Honeycomb cake is basic. Banh cuon was alright. But the one with the meat inside was not good. Had a rancid smell so ended up throwing it away. Their Banh Mi is nicely packed though. First off..... they do not have prices on anything so it's a true gamble looking at the register when you're being rung up. The herbal tea from the fridge is so expensive! Second, I purchased a beef jerky and liver papaya salad yesterday ($16) and just had it for lunch today. Be careful because you can get in to an accident with the drivers in the small lot. They have all sorts of foods and snacks from che to banh mi to banh hoi. The food is all fresh and delicious. It's a typical Vietnamese deli and the good thing is they have a huge variety of traditional street foods and desserts/ sweets you can't find in regular Asian grocery stores. They also have a great selection of fresh Vietnamese steamed rice noodle-based to-go dishes that bigger restaurants don't have. Small deli style store with a lot packed into it. We ordered the banh cuon, very tasty and a good amount of filling and noodles. My main complaint is that they don't serve any pickled vegetables or bean sprouts like other places do.
