Review Visit: June 11th, 2018 That Burger Joint is... disjointed? Recently, Oberweis Dairy (an ice cream store, a la Cold Stone Creamery) has expanded to offer a restaurant attached to their store. While driving through Bloomington, the gimmicky name instantly caught my eye. You would think if you visit a restaurant with burger in it's name, you would order a burger. But I didn't. I ordered 'That Spicy Chicken'. My friend ordered 'That Burger'. We sat down and were anxious to dig in to the food. The sandwiches were massive and heavy. Almost too big to eat. But where it was big in size, it lacked in flavor. I got jalapenos on my chicken and it definitely added a kick, but the chicken itself tasted... off. It wasn't bad, but it didn't give me anything to write home about. Just this blog post. I tried my friend's burger and she tried my sandwich. Her burger was full of flavor due to the toppings and grease, but the actual meat had no more flavor than a $4 pound of unseasoned beef that you'd get at the local grocer. She agreed that the food was mediocre overall. The lay out of the inside reminds me of a hybrid between Steak N Shake and Five Guys Burger & Fries. You walk up to the counter, place your order and you either take it to go or they can bring it out to your table. It's that cross between fast food and restaurant. The decor was sparse and lacking. There is an attempt to give it a rustic look, but the large swathes of black leave much to be desired. The customer service was good while ordering, but once we were sitting down, the staff was complaining among themselves about how short staffed they were. I hate to score That Burger Joint so low, but I can't in good conscious give it a glowing review. It's best to avoid it, even if you are there getting ice cream. Great burger place! It's part of Oberweiss and connected to their ice cream shop! Very good juicy burger with their own special sauce. They bring the food to your table and you can have Oberweiss chocolate or white milk with dinner. We had chocolate- our favorite! The fries are really good too and they don't feted me ranch instead of ketchup that was really good. read more

The place wasn't too terribly busy despite being open for only a week in a town with an insatiable appetite for new restaurants. After a short wait in line we ordered and waited almost twice as long for our food. Not a lot of variety - the regular double burger, the patty melt, chicken sandwich and a rotating seasonal burger (currently a mushroom-swiss). Although I didn't like the way they prepared my patty melt (not finished on the flat top?!), I gotta admit it was meaty and tasty. The fries were nothing special and I'm not an ice cream guy, but the Oberweis shakes/ice cream received enthusiastic thumbs up from the others in my group. This is a stand alone restaurant in front of a strip mall. They have a drive-thru. Dining room is nice atmosphere- half is set up for ice cream and the other half for meals. They have burgers (obviously) as well as chicken strips which I had. I have to say they are probably the worst I've ever had. Not juicy, no flavor I got the 5 strips and threw half of them out. Fries were ok. Nothing special They have Pepsi products for soda. The milk shake was the best part of the meal. It's overpriced and I suggest you drive a little further down Veterans and go to Meatheads for Burgers & fries or across the street to Chick-Fil-A for chicken strips. read more

Pretty darn good! We stopped in recently and I enjoyed my patty melt. Previous comments talk about this place being 'too pricey'. I don't have a problem with $8 for a great burger. Great quality ingredients here, folks. It ain't McDonalds! I love that they have lots of free toppings so I added grilled mushrooms to my melt. We split a large order of fries - plenty to share - and I was stuffed! Fries a tad on the salty side but not too far over the top. The two burger parties on the melt were cooked perfectly, still juicy. And it all arrived piping hot. Their milk dispenser machine intrigued me so we'll have to go back and check it out. read more

Despite reading the reviews we decided to check this place out. They burgers are decent but $20 for two burgers and a small fry is not really worth it. The burger size is kind of small and nothing really special about the burger itself. They do have a large list of "toppings" that they allow free of charge (ie: jalapenos, mushrooms etc.). Service is ok as well. Extremely limited menu so be prepared.There were only a few other people there so we got our food quickly. Well we originally came to get some ice cream next door at Oberweiss but the aroma of the burgers caught our attention. So here we are, waiting for our order to be ready. Total came to $19 and some change for a soda, order of fries, the patty melt and the junior burger. Price is a little up there, so hopefully the flavor makes up for that. The menu is limited Burgers range from $6.50 to $9 Chicken sandwich $7 Tenders $4.50-$7 Hot dog $4 They also have shakes and milk with Oberweiss dairy products Also a decent amount of free toppings for your sandwich, similar to FiveGuys Burgers toppings. Order took 19 minutes at lunch time from order to being ready. Ok so I am a few bites into my patty melt and it's honestly nothing special. The burger patties don't have much flavor, the rye bread is the most flavorful part of my burger unfortunately. The fries are just ok, nothing that great, just potato is all. My husband got the junior and it's a mess, falling apart in his hands. His patty was very dry, same on the flavor, it's lacking in the meat. Really to be honest, I don't think we will return. WAY overpriced. Almost $10 for a cheeseburger and fries, no drink. The fries were warm, not hot, not really salted, and there were only a few bagglers. They tasted and smelled like they were fried in vegetable oil, and maybe something else, which is a plus. The burger was good, above average. The Junior is big enough for an adult. The ingredients and toppings are quality. The brioche bun is good, soft but not soggy. The bun seems big enough to withstand more toppings. The burger isn't overly greasy, and the grill flavor came through after a couple bites. This doesn't seem sustainable with competition like Meat Heads and Culver's. Even when first in line, this place is really slow. Combined with their high prices, there is little reason to choose this place. I have tried their burger and chicken fingers. I would much rather get a $4 double with fries from Steak 'n Shake than get the same $10 meal here. The burger and fries may be slightly better, but definitely not worth over double the price. The burger is good. Just good. I got a burger on a pretzel bun, with cheese, crispy bacon (perfectly cooked bacon), fresh jalapenos, pickles, and BBQ sauce. They were quite light on the BBQ sauce. The burger patty was a little overcooked but I think they cook them all well done. The fries are very good. Should have gotten a large, but as I got a small burger and small fries and a drink for a smidge under $13, I decided against a larger anything. That is essentially the issue. You're going to spend $15ish for burger and fries. What is making this place stand out against, for example, smashburger or five guys? Tried the burger joint a few days after it opened as the pictures looked good. I was rather disappointed with the taste of the burger I got, as well as the options for toppings and specialty burgers. They offer one type of cheese, American, and the toppings are rather basic (no avocado, guacamole, egg, jalapeño ketchup or other unique toppings). The pretzel bun was lackluster as well. I didn't feel that it fit the style of burger it was, which was a bacon cheese burger. Their fries are good. They remind me of meathead's fries except you have to apply your own seasoning if you want. They also do not offer any cheese sauce for dipping the fries which was a disappointment. I did try their special sauce and it was extremely strong with horseradish and not very good. The person I went with got chicken fingers. Those were also sub par. We both left wishing we went to any of the other burger places over this one (meatheads, red robin, steak n shake, etc). For the price of the food and how it tasted, I won't go back. I thought the food was good but WAY overpriced. A cheeseburger was $8 and a small fry was $2. A milkshake is either $6 or $8 depending on what size you get. So for me, a cheeseburger, small fry and small shake cost me $17.28. Everything was good. In fact, quite good. However, I feel that given other burger places in town are comparable and considerably less expensive, I don't see this place being around for very long unless they lower their prices. Wow! Never would have I imagined driving this place that it's a hidden little gem. Besides from their amazing burgers, their customer service is second to none. I've been here twice and the first time the young man behind the counter was courteous and came to our table several times to check on how we were doing. Not bad. Wish I would've known how very limited the menu was before going, but I got a burger and it was good. Problem was that I had my four young children with me and with no kids menu, I was limited to adult size meals only. The fries were extremely salty and even more soggy. The pretzel bun is a great option, too. Fresh-cut fries were hot & crisp; I especially liked the special sauce you can request for them. So much food left over, my drive-thru bag still felt full. Like many others here i feel there are a lot of "a good burger joint" elements missing here. The main problems? A long wait after ordering. Poor taste. High price. The burgers are 8 bucks and up. Add a dollar if you want cheese. Fries are 3 dollars. Add it up and you end up paying 12-15 dollars without the drink. Money wouldn't be an object if you were at a place like "five guys" or portillos or even Culver's where you get value for your dollar. That burger joint (TBJ) lacks in experience, service and taste. They jumped on to a market saturated with great quality burger places. Let's not forget that Blono has a long list of great restaurants competing for your hard earned cash and that will give you all three (taste, good service and fair price). Places like meatheads, Famous daves, fort jesse cafe, steak n shake, Super Gyros, Shannon's five star and the list goes on. There isnt a place for mediocre burgers in Blono. Even smash burger had a better tasting burger for less and they went out of business in Bloomington. Ill just get off my soap box and go strait to the facts. The burgers lack taste. The pretzel bun had more taste than the patty and condiments itself. The cheese was not melted. The lettuce tomato, onions and pickle had no presence. It was like the person in charge of adding these condiments was afraid of putting too much in the the burger. The burger was not small, it was actually large but it just didnt have any taste. I've tried other burgers on pretzel buns and almost never has the bun out tasted the burger itself. Fries were fresh but not crispy. They seem fresh cut. Too many wrongs to warrant an 8 dollar price tag on a burger. I would say toss the bun and replace with a regular, sesame seed or even the ciabatta bread used on the mushroom and swiss one. Work on the condiment balance. Put the cheese on top of the patty while it is still on the grill. Melt the damn thing. Just simple steps that will go a long way. Service was not completely bad, the folks serving were polite and very friendly. The restaurant itself was nice. The time from ordering to actually serving my meal seemed like it took forever. This could be attributed on the staff still learning the ropes. It us normal for a new restaurant. My advice for those who ignore this and other reviews and venture into TBJ is to not go with high expectations and to buy andl ice cream and get comfortable while you wait. Edit A month has passed and i decided to give this place another try. Mainly due to the ice cream. I tried the mushroom and swiss burger again. Im happy to say that this time it was way better. Cheese melted, the burger was flavorfull, the wait was about 10 minutes. Thats an improvement.
