I've driven past this place so many times passing through Batavia, and was always curious about the old looking signs and ancient looking building. Today was the day. I love tacos. Time to try That Taco Place. Except, I was more in the mood for a burrito. I love those. I ordered a "deluxe." Unlike most places, this deluxe/supreme didn't include sour cream. That was a huge miss on their part. The beef was not seasoned, and very bland. So were the beans. The entire burrito was lacking any modicum of flavor. Cheese didn't save it. I will give them this, the hot sauce it came with was really, really good. But it did not save this bland tasting $7 deluxe burrito. I'm glad I tried this place finally, but I won't be back. The $1 frozen burritos at Wally World are more tasty than this was. read more

It's a old divey old Taco joInt that you see when you enter Batavia on RT 5 towards Buffalo. There is two picnic like tables inside. There is also a drive through. Come to Batavia every so often, always wanted to try this place but the days I come through are the days this place is closed, not today tho. Let me start off by saying that I am a mighty taco fan and that geography gets in the way of my ability to patronize them that often. So today I was driving through the bustling metropolis that is Batavia (sarcasm) running errands and suddenly a strong desire for tacos came over me. Now being an hour from the closest Mighty Taco, my options were Taco Bell (barf) and That Taco Place. I decided to give That Taco Place a try. I ordered two hard shell tacos and a chicken fajita, which came to ten dollars and change. Personally, I found the price to be a bit pricey considering the portion size and quality of the food. I tried one of the tacos first. My immediate thought was how stale the shell itself was. Also, the fact that they place way more lettuce than anything else in the taco, and use whole slices of tomato were negatives. The beef itself had little flavor. I think though, the biggest issue was the shell which was distracting me from any saving graces this taco had. I can say though that they put a decent amount of sour cream on them. The Chicken fajita was better, but not great. The quacamole was decent, and the peppers and onions were cooked well, but the shell was dry and bordering stale and the chicken was in such huge chunks that you either got all or nothing. I can definitely say that I would choose this place over taco bell anytime, but I can't say for sure that I would return. If anything it reminded me of what I am missing from mighty taco or how I could easily make something better at home. read more

Simple but delicious! I can only speak to the hard shell tacos which are fried in house to a crispy chewy perfection. The taco meat is slow cooked and isn't sloppy joe style like what you get from the seasoning packets in the grocery store. I've been coming here for 30+ years. Every time I come home on leave I crave 3 hard shell tacos with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and hot sauce on the side. As much as I wanted to like That Taco Place, I just couldn't. Granted I'm from the land of Tex-Mex dreams in Texas, I was hopeful that there'd be a glimpse of goodness in upstate NY, especially given the fact that the owner is from LA. Taco meat was all ground meat, very little seasoning (at least they have hot sauce to douse it with), way too much lettuce, and one thick slice of tomato (?!) on top. Oh also, unmelted cheese. The tortillas were thin and dry. Not much taste to them either. Amazing. I live 45 minutes away and travel to Batavia JUST for That Taco Place. They never disappoint. My family is vegetarian and we love the bean burritos and the bean and cheese enchiladas. I ordered a small ground beef and chicken taco. Both tacos were cold. The beef was kept in a large plastic bin that they warm up in the microwave. How does this place have bad reviews?!?! I grew up just outside of Batavia, but have since moved away. Now, every time I'm back home I make a bee-line for this place and it never disappoints. Recently heard from a friend that they had bad reviews on yelp and I must say I was in shock because everything I've ever tried (and I've tried a lot) has been great. I even have a friend living in Utah who periodically has his mom ship him stuff from That Taco Place because he misses it so much. My absolutely favorite is the deluxe quesadilla on a hard shell; seriously, I could eat those all day every day. I also highly recommend their chili in the winter (chili is only available part of the year) and their peanut butter milkshakes in the summer. This place was terrible. I expected at least edible food. We couldn't even eat the hard tacos, stale shells, dry meat. The taco sauce was not at all good actually it was so bad my husband warned me not to put it on my food. In the 29 years Ive been married my husband has NEVER not eaten what he's bought, today he ate a few bites of the soft taco and of the burrito and said I can't eat this. Disappointing. We have frequented this little gem for 25+ years. No, not authentic Mexican. There are places that serve that. This is the food you want to have while you're sitting around with old friends, watching a Friday night movie and joking about the crazy things you did as a teenager. I love the large beef taco, layer dip, and at lunch time, a taco salad. My son gets the bean burrito, and my husband the deluxe burrito. Hot sauce is Frank's Red Hot. I hate to give a place a bad review but I have to. I'm Latin and have tried different latin cuisine specifically Mexican so it's disappointing to try tacos and say to yourself, what is this? The chicken soft taco made me want to run to Taco Bell that happens to be a few blocks away from here. The people preparing the tacos appeared to be caucasian and I'm not saying you can't have a caucasian who can make great tacos but I'd be lying if I didn't say that this made me raise an eyebrow when I initially walked in. I was a bit skeptical at that point. Maybe it's me but when I walk into a taco place (other then Taco Bell or a chain restaurant). I like to see the ethnic group that is known for their food working there. The place itself looks like a small hole in the wall and the people working there were friendly so that was nice.
