The no-frills restaurant itself is very basic with not much character but what the design and decor lack, the food more than makes up for. Home-style country kitchen just like you're sitting in a home kitchen on someone's farm or ranch. The ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. The staff are delightful and down to earth.

My wife and I had a couple good meals with some even better service. This place was pretty full and we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated, popular place around 1 pm on a Sunday. Our server Sandy was fast and friendly. Wifey got chicken fried chicken with a side salad and fried okra. I enjoyed a chicken fried steak. My two sides were green beans and fried okra, tasty. Both meals were very good, the only star removing issue we had was the breading came off the protein when it was cut....that's one of my criteria....the breading should stay on the for the most part.

Food was great!!! Must try the onion rings! Cilantro chicken enchiladas were amazing! Service was great and on top of everything. Ambiance is a quiet little diner.

Our first visit and it went great! We were starving and everything we got was so good, even the Sweet Tea. Burger and Chicken Fried Steak and Fries were the best! We had a great waitress, super friendly and made us feel welcome. Lots of regulars in the restaurant so the food must always be good! Nice community feeling in the restaurant which we loved.

I had not visited this grill in some time. So I decided to give it a try and was professionally greated by a nice gentleman. He sat me in Sandy's section who promptly came to see if I needed a beverage. I received a fresh ice tea with lemon. I told her I was ready to order and I ordered the Chicken Taco Salad. It was freshly made with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, with side kicks of sour cream and avacodo. I didn't get a dressing as I asked for the salsa. It was so tasty that I asked for additional. They did have a great selection of daily specials and the cakes are home made by the owner I understand and are a heafty servicing I saw. All in all Sandy was jolly on the spot and got what ever was needed. You don't find outstanding wait staff like now days. Hats off to Sandy! Keep up the great work The 1838 Grill!!

The name of the restaurant should have been self explanatory: Ocean Blue OYSTER bar, but it was anything but. I didn't know how to navigate the menu-- there's Thai food, but also cajun food?? I opted for a little bit of everything: a pound of garlic butter crawfish, papaya salad, and their crawfish étouffée. But... even with a full spread of dishes, not a single thing was good. I love a good leftover, but it wasn't even worth salvaging. WHY: The crawfish had zero flavor. Making crawfish is an art, and the artist here is clearly a novice--you can tell it was rushed. The papaya salad should have been light and refreshing, but boy, the fish sauce overwhelmed every bite. Lastly the étouffée... was far from an actual etoufee. The roux was off, the texture was more like gumbo SOUP, and I barely found any crawfish in it.

Now let me tell you about the food. We opened with the crab cakes - they were excellent. Hubbie ordered the Red Fish Pontchartrain and I ordered a custom dinner: Shrimp and sea scallops with the lemon asparagus risotto. Everything was spectacular: beautiful season, beautifully cooked, beautifully presented. However, I must warn you: portions are ENORMOUS. We had to take half of our food home. Still, we decided to order the crème brûlée. Highly recommended! Creamy and not overly sweet. The only thing that we're not outstanding were the bread and the coffee. They could go with a more rustic bread.

(we live in san antonio) but... the experience this time was just ok, not fantastic. despite hubbie making reservations 3 weeks in advance, and restaurant knowing it was a celebratory occasion, we were seated at the very first table - which faces the entrance. awkward location. we pretty much ordered same meal as last time. mexican shrimp cocktail - sauce was very thick in an off putting way, but shrimp was fresh and nicely chilled. hubbie got shrimp & oysters with fries. he's not one to complain much, but he said all were a bit greasy & not as crispy as he'd like. i had shrimp, scallops & broccolini. plate came with not very well prepared broccoli - with no mention from server before or upon arrival of switch. how can broccoli be both under & over at same time? unsure, but parts were very hard and others too soft, so it went mostly uneaten. i would have asked for something else if id known they didnt have broccolini. scallops & shrimp were well prepared, but light, velvety sauce from last time was replaced with slightly "gloopy" and a bit greasy sauce, didnt look or taste very appealing. brussel sprouts were drenched in some type of mayo sauce that was not mentioned on the menu. so "crispy" brussel sprouts were soggy. SO... how much of this experience was on us? we didnt complain, we didnt send back, but we would have had to send EVERYTHING back and this was our anniversary. we are not that picky that every dish needs to be perfectly prepared to our liking. but for is to encounter a problem with every dish? maybe just a bad night. but i dont feel like we received the upscale experience we paid for. only one thing was as fantastic as we remembered - the creme brûlée!

Initially, the hostess told us they couldn't accommodate our party, but then they changed their mind. The interaction felt uncomfortable, as she emphasized their policies for large groups and mentioned that they normally require a minimum of $145 per person. She ultimately allowed us to bypass that requirement as long as everyone ordered an entrée. Our waitress, however, was wonderful and provided excellent service throughout the meal. I ordered the clam and mussel pot, which I found surprisingly bland, though the bread was delicious. The rest of my group seemed to enjoy their meals much more than I did. Unfortunately, there were also some cleanliness concerns. A spider descended from the ceiling onto our table during dinner, and another bug crawled across the table. There was even a bug zapper in the corner of the restaurant that seemed to be going off constantly throughout our meal. For a party of seven, our bill came to around $700. Given the overall experience, the food quality, and the atmosphere, it felt a bit underwhelming for the price.
