Service was excellent and fast, and the ambiance is nice, but the food was hit or miss. The fried mushrooms were delicious, but the gravy tasted odd. Maybe made with cheese? All portions are large, including the very generous side salad, but the honey mustard dressing also tasted strange. Tweaks to some of the recipes would jump this place up a star. read more

We went on a whim a few months back, and I really enjoy the variety of fresh and homemade-quality food they serve - I visit fairly often now. The establishment is very tidy, and clean. Tea is fresh brewed & sweet; service is friendly and attentive. For appetizers, I thoroughly enjoy their fried pickles ($7.99), and the fried mushrooms ($8.99). It might sound pricey but you are paying for every bit of the portion your receive. I've had the chicken Alfredo, which was decently seasoned; it ended up being two separate meals for me. The BLT, which was a good sized sandwich on fresh, toasted bread, plenty of bacon; seasoned steak fries on the side. The Seguin club, a club sandwich that comes with a schmear of avocado on a toasted croissant; again a good portion of meat; I enjoy their steak fries. My grandma tried the chicken poblano, which she enjoyed, she got the sauce on the side because she was worried about spice but it ended up being okay for her. My grandma got the chopped steak with mushrooms and onions - he ate the whole darn thing, and he mentioned the homemade gravy was very tasty! My sons usually get the kid's chicken tender meal, and they actually eat their food! Everything I've had here is good. Their desserts ($6 a slice) look phenomenal, and I will try something next time! We had great service from a young man w glasses. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and more than happy to share his insights, which I dig. We had CFS, Ruben and club. The winner was the Ruben, super solid. CFS was solid. Club was good. Over all nice experience with fair pricing. Great service. Not a mind blowing experience but a solid and fair experience. What a wonderful place we went back the second day for lunch.. staff is friendly and very efficient and helpful. Food is delicious. Look at the daily specials . A-ok! Met up here for Mother's Day when she sounded like my other suggestion wouldn't cut it. It's easy to find and had plenty of parking. I saw picnic tables outside on a covered porch and we were seated in the first room. Mainly families with young kids and retired couples filled the place, very casual. There are booths and tables, our booth was clean, and the menu is pretty straightforward with a good basic variety. Lots of light from all the windows. I'd perhaps confused the name with another restaurant I'd looked up previously bc I'd envisioned something a bit fancier where I could get a glass of wine, but this place is more diner-like, family-friendly basics. They have Coke and my mother even likes their tea (she never orders tea!). We started with the 4.99 fried pickles, which are the spears I like rather than rounds. The batter was thoroughly cooked and fluffier than the ones I've had other places. No cayenne pepper or anything, so they're mild but tasty and served with ranch. I assume this is the batter used on the chicken fried steaks other reviews are raving about; it's wonderful! Good variety of dressings available and a decent simple side salad. Ma got the turkey melt and the Homestyle potato chips she said she loves here. I tried the chicken Alfredo, which had generous chunks of meat, properly cooked penne and came with an enormous tender breadstick. My plate was more than I could have finished even if we hadn't ordered a starter. I would cut back on the seasoning in the already-rich Alfredo sauce, but everything else was fine (**edit, sauce tasted great cold the next day). Our waitress worked hard covering her section and being a seating hostess. She apologized for not getting me a refill sooner, but I think she did a great job. We didn't feel neglected at all and were happy to be offered some to-go boxes. Two adult entrees, a starter, three non-alcoholic drinks for under $35 after tax. Great food but it's a terrible idea that the host/hostess can't speak English. She points and grunts at the list so you have to add you own name. Then when seated, they can regurgitate the specials but if you ask questions, they can't speak English. Several couples were irritated about it as well. I'll spend my American dollars on a company who supports Americans. read more

It is not served with sides, but its a meal in itself and enough to share. Very filling and rich. Their German Chocolate Cake is the best around. Have enjoyed the food at the 1838 grill several times. They kind of have weird hours. They are only open for lunch until 3 o'clock every day except for Fridays they are open until eight. We arrived around 1:00 and found the place to be pretty busy for a Monday afternoon. Even so we were seated immediately. We had fried pickles for an appetizer. The spears were huge and the portion could have easily fed a few friends. My husband had the chili cheese enchiladas and absolutely LOVED them. I opted for the chicken fried steak with mac & cheese and friend okra. I ate maaaaaybe a quarter of the chicken fried steak and the remainder did not fit in a large to go box!! The thing is incredibly delicious and large enough to feed three people. Did I mention the atmosphere? It's clean, nice and cool, soft background music, extremely attentive staff, etc. You really couldn't ask for more! But go ahead and have dessert! Strawberry crumble cake is sooo amazing!! Strawberry milk in cake form! Lemon blueberry cake...omgosh! Blueberries burst in your mouth, this cake is absolutely incredible! A good, reliable spot to quell your hangriness. The Chili Cheese Enchiladas were generous, served piping hot, and decent. Loved the bowl of pinto beans, I could tell they're made from scratch, and were very nicely seasoned. Try a cornbread muffin, it's beautifully browned yet delicate and moist inside with just a hint of sweetness. This restaurant is amazing. When we pulled into the parking lot we luckily found a parking spot because the place was packed with customers. I always figure that that many people can't be wrong about the food. There were twelve of us eating and the first ones there ordered fried onions and fried pickles. The fried onions were okay and the pickles a little tastier. I was now leery of ordering but l liked the ingredients in the cilantro Enchiladas. It came with rice and beans. Was I ever surprised at the wonderful flavors that were above and beyond. I was truly blown away. If I could give this place less than 1 star I would. Went in for lunch during work ordered the special and after 30 min of waiting with no food I decided to ask for it to go. That in itself took another 10 min finally I got up and asked to just pay for drink and I was charged for the whole meal. I told the waitress I'm on lunch break and don't have time since I wasted it waiting on the food and I was noy gonna pay for it. The food is good but the service has gone down. We've been going there a few years now and the service was always great. These past couple of times we noticed new waiters who do not no how to give great customer service. When I asked for a manager to complain about my waitress, everyone said "I don't know ". Then one them said she's coming to talk to you. After a minute then oh Sherry left. I demanded a number and they refused to give it to me. Anyone who runs a business should be easily accessible. I am very disappointed in the way this business operates. The team this evening failed , not one of them offered an apology, nor reprimand the waitress for lack of service. We waited almost an hour for a salad and chicken fried chicken. What a joke!! Those employees should be there to work not to joke around with other employees and ignore their customers. This was the final straw, 1838 lost great customers. We will be spreading the word to our friends and family not to spend their money at this restaurant.
