Here's a time when i wish they offered 1/2 stars. I'd give them a 3.5 if was possible, but a 4 seems a tad too gracious. The fact that they have great imports on tap is just downright fantastic. They used to serve food during happy hour, but have since canceled that service. The food and bev combos were amazing deals back then, which would've been an easy 5 star. But, without the food option, it kinda loses it appeal to keep coming back. So, yeah... a 3 1/2 rating seems fair. I came in and was welcomed plesantly. I bought food from whole foods but the bar has food as well. They have an array of IPA beers, ciders and a few kombuchas. read more

When my friend suggested we try this place out, I was puzzled that it was located inside Whole Foods. Upon arrival, it was really surprising to see a "bar" inside a grocery store but it operates just like any other eatery that serves alcohol. We ordered off the Happy Hour menu. The food was slow to arrive but the service was friendly and kept us informed of the status. Poutine fries were indulgent and definitely for sharing. The cauli "nachos" were filling and awesome. They are fried though, but I would order those again. Pork belly with Brussels sprouts had a sweet surprise of sweet and savory. Definitely worth trying. I really enjoyed the food and I will come back. Afterwards, conveniently, we hit Home Goods in the same shopping area for a little retail therapy. read more

This bar is located inside the Whole Foods which is interesting because I've never seen a bar inside a Whole Foods before. I came here with a friend on Tuesday hoping to get their Tuesday deal, which was a taco plate and a pitcher of beer for $19. The taco plate had six tortillas so you could make at least six tacos, but they had a lot of carnitas to fill the tacos up. The guacamole was amazing and they give a lot as well! Splitting three each with my friend and about two glasses of beer didn't make me super full though. They have happy hour M-F from 4pm-6pm and they have specials every day of the week that they serve all day. I definitely want to come back and try the other specials that they have. Inside one of the largest, well-stocked WF stores around you'll find this nice eatery with an impressive Happy Hour. First, I must rave that they have a craft beer menu and excellent wines by the glass at decent prices (Note: "The Prisoner" red blend is cheaper here than across the way at Salt Creek Grille). The food is fresh, healthy, and well-prepared. We had an unique cauliflower nacho appetizer, fries, and chicken wings. It's great for meat and non-meat eaters (tacos, burgers, brussle sprouts, fish, salads, etc.) Our waiter was very attentive, and treated us with healthy wine pours. They also have daily specials. Screens offer the usual sports programming. On a Friday night, we had no trouble finding a seat, plus it appears that shoppers can bring their food in an eat in the area as well. Bar inside a grocery store is awesome! They have happy hour and a full menu but you can buy food from the store and eat it in the bar area. They also have big screen tvs so it's perfect for game nights. As for food they have different specials throughout the week and they have happy hour from 4 to 6 pm. We got the tacos and pitcher of orange wheat. The taco platter special on tuesday is good for two people. The taco tortillas were too greasy so we had to pat down the excess oil with tissues. Awesome new bar at Whole Foods. They used to have a impromptu bar in the back of the store, but now they built a real bar in front of the store. We stopped for happy hour, which is from 4-6 on weekdays. $5 specials on beer and wine. They also have daily specials. We tried the taco Tuesday special. It comes with a platter for 6 tacos and a pitcher of beer. It was a pretty good deal. My only complaint was that the taco tortillas came out way too greasy! They need to do something about that. But overall it's a good addition and I'll definitely be coming back. read more

WFM taking another crack a in-market fast casual I suppose WFM El Segundo is looking to duplicate the success of the Playa Vista location, which may or may not be the first restaurant inside a WFM. Just opening less than a week ago, and being under construction for many months, I would say that this effort is closer to a Gastro Pub with high end pub grub, draft beer, and select bottles of vino. The interior is a very modern and woody (reclaimed barn I presume) like every other new restaurant this side of 405 with some tables and two large communal raised tables and a long bar. As the restaurant is at the front of the store it is very bright and there is a connected patio. The 2nd can be accessed immediately to the right of the right hand entry of WFM. I guess on the left if you are looking outside from within. As mentioned before, the 2nd is a fast casual concept. There are food and beer menus since all of the draft beers, like 30 or more, need their own menu-shame shame WFM for wasting all of that paper. There is a counter with a big sign saying "order here" immediately to the left as you walk in. In addition to burgers, sandwiches, and small plates, they have a daily special like taco Tuesday for two with a pitcher of beer for $19 or Market Fish Fridays $12, which all are surprisingly affordable, I guess since they don't have to pay rent! I opted for the fish n chips since I felt like going back to work lethargic. After placing my order and paying they handed me a number on a metal stand and off to the communal table I went. I noticed there were people sitting at the restaurant communal table that had "pay by-the-pound" food with their brown containers nearby. I was thinking I am dining with silverware, I do not want this plastic fork wielding riff-raff anywhere near me. The tables behind me were people just hanging out to keep out of the heat. I think this will be a problem if the 2nd gets popular. I don't care, I can be a jerk when it comes to the table I am entitled to sit at! Since I was one of the few people in the restaurant who ordered off the menu my food came out pretty quick. The fish n chips are made with wild caught sustainable Alaskan cod fish like fish n chips should be made (not with salmon or talapia) and are in small chicken tender size pieces. It is served with a house made tartar sauce, but I prefer the stuff out of a 1 gallon tub. I dipped a piece of fish in the tartar sauce, took a bite, and burned the roof of my mouth! Aye! The fish was perfectly seasoned, the batter was crispy and tasty, and I will go out on a limb and say the 2nd fish n chips are the best in the South Bay. The one thing was that the chips were American style french fries and not proper chips, but they use a really good seasoned salt and were hot starchy goodness anyway. If you are at WFM and want an alternative to the other restaurants next door or at the point check this place out. I am already to come by Friday after work for the fish special and glass of chablis. read more

Whole Foods stepping it up with their very own bar and cafe featuring sports watching capability. Used to be you would grab some food from several hot/cold stations, pay at the register and have a seat to eat and you can still do that but now they have an enclosed actual pub-like setting where you can sit and order from a menu. Pick your seating inside or on the front sidewalk patio. They've got burgers and salads and sushi and daily specials. Oh and fish & chips. Great for lunch but probably skip the beer, which they have plenty to chose from, if you're headed back to work. What a way to grocery shop and dine at the same time. read more

Noticed this new bar and cafe inside the El Segundo Whole Foods on a recent shopping trip. Lots of signs saying "join us for games" with large TV's sprinkled about. A few days later, my BF and I were looking for some place to watch one of the World Series games and thought The 2nd wouldn't be as packed as other places and decided to check it out. Sat at the bar right in front of the TV behind it. Ordered beer and wine. They do have a nice assortment of local craft brews on tap, however, it being a beer and wine only place, the wine list could use some more options, better variety for non beer drinkers. Menu seems to be a good variety of sushi, salads and sandwiches but we were just interested in drinks with our baseball, why we sat at the bar. Service is the reason for the two star "meh" rating: first bartender who waited on us was really nice, attentive and so was the second guy who came on a bit later, covered for first guy when first guy went on break. It got strange when another guy who seemed to be older, the bar manager perhaps, came on and gave us our check right away, ummm, we didn't ask for it, and it is in the middle of the game. It was pretty obvious we were watching the game, not chatting with each other, or others, and we were ordering rounds of drinks, not just nursing one for the duration. Perhaps it was because we didn't order food that the manager guy came back minutes later and asked gruffly if we were ready to pay. Well we were going to watch the entire game here, believed your advertising of this being a place to do so, order more rounds, but if you are going to be so insistent, yes, we will take our money else where. So we walked across the parking lot to Salt Creek Grille's bar and finished watching the game, spent additional dollars there. The 2nd seems better suited to the lunch rush crowd, key word being "rush", then a place to watch a long sports game or long conversations over just drinks at the bar. read more

Enjoyed a couple rounds of beer, some sushi and shared a fish and chips. First the beer, delicious. He had an Old Rasputin, dark like Guinness and I suspect bold and mysterious judging from the thick and frothy neck. I opted for the Mission Shipwrecked and had 3 because he ended up preferring my choice over his. We also shared the spicy crab Cali roll and the Rainbow roll. The sushi rice was, well, hardly sushi rice. Each roll came apart...fell apart that is, any attempt at keeping it whole was next to impossible so a combo fingers, fork, chopsticks action was necessary to get the the bite into my mouth was a bit annoying. Sushi was decent but I wouldn't run back for more any time soon. Not a lot of options either and vegan sushi is not my style. The fish and chips were hot and crispy. We would have liked some malt vinegar and ketchup, but despite sitting at the bar we could not get the attention of our server (or any server) for service, so that was a bummer. They were tasty but would have been much better with the vinegar and maybe a squeeze of lemon. Enjoyed watching the Patriots lose (who doesn't love that?) We had a TV front and center so that was a plus. Service was maybe a C+ Sunday night...servers were friendly but not attentive. I'd give the place a try again especially for beer and football...maybe on Monday night because they have a oyster special. Note restrooms were messy and could have used a once over. And to all those parents who complain about needing changing tables...I have no idea what your house looks like but if I were your kid I'd wish for parents who had more decency to clean up for the next person. Great casual beer and wine spot to watch whatever game they happen to be playing on the TVs. No frills and not stressful to be at. Food is really good and cheap. Actually the worst service on the planet. Everyone is perfectly nice and friendly but you will actually be forgotten by the staff. Nothing is fast. You could be the only person standing at the "Order Here" register with maybe 10 people in the restaurant and none of the staff will see you or acknowledge you and you will probably have to ask if you can order something. As long as you know the atmosphere is easy and comfortable and the food is good and have zero expectation beyond that... his place is great. read more

They say "third times a charm". Well, it is alarming how each time we have visited this place the service has progressively gotten worse. The first visit-we expected bumps, after all they had only been open one week. No silverware, no refills (sitting at the bar making eye contact with both "bartenders".) The second visit-service was similar but my food never came out. My husband had eaten all of his food (at my insistence) when the "bartender" finally came over and asked how things were. Again, we were sitting at the bar and he had watched our drinks become empty with no probing for another, and my food never come out. At this point we mentioned that I was waiting for my sushi roll. He left to go get it and never returned. Another bartender came up a few minutes later to check in and ask if my husband needed a box, and we mentioned again that my food had not arrived. It finally came out, but what the heck? No refills, no apology. Nothing. Last night was our final visit. Again, subpar service was provided. Three bartenders were working. Our food came out quickly this time but our drinks were left empty for our entire visit (did I mention we were sitting at the bar again-bartenders were legitimately filling a water pitcher in front of us while our water glasses and wine glasses sat empty). After walking from one side of the bar to the other several times and seeing both the credit card and the napkins on the bar one bartender asked if we wanted another round. Uh, no. I said we need a box and to close out. Box was delivered right away, but my credit card sat for another ten minutes before one of the three "bartenders" got around to giving us the check. During this ten minutes we had the pleasure of overhearing another party come up to the bar and order wine and argue with the bartender to serve them at the bar because their "server" hadn't been seen in 30 minutes. Combined my husband and I have over 28 years in restaurant work. We are usually extremely patient, but this place is just tragic. Whole Foods needs to get out of the restaurant biz unless they have plans to bring in real bartenders and servers. Do yourself a favor, order and awesome pizza, buy a bottle of wine and take it home! *forgot to mention that when you get the food it is decently prepared and enjoyable-which is where the two stars come in. read more

Very disappointing. This place should be so much better than it is. Convenient location with good parking and inside of a Whole Foods. But the staff don't know what do with it. They almost always have music on, unless it's the Dodgers playoffs or something or a football championship, and it's way too loud and sometimes bad language. Staff is so so. Liz and Joel are nice and understand customer service, and he guy from the bakery/deli who's a parttimer, but the rest of them are awful. Rude when you ask for sound or turn the channel. They never know what to put on, eve though they have 4 TV's. Beer selection is very good, all locoal stuff, and a lot of turnover. Menu isn't expensive if you stick to Happy Hour or burger specials, but sometimes they don't have something and don't change the menu to reflect it. And the WF security goons come through every 10 minutes for what reason I don't know. Sunday staff is the worst. Weekday afternoons when Liz is working, it's manageable. read more

We used to go to Whole Foods for their wine tasting nights. Some nice wines in a relaxed environment with tasty snacks (crackers/cheese/etc.). It was enjoyable, calm, and friendly. They've now complete rearranged the store to create this new "The 2ND" bar at the front of the store and the quality of the whole experience went straight down the drain. This past Friday evening, we went hoping to repeat the experience we remembered. Instead, what we found was a bar with a DJ parked in the corner BLASTING club tracks. The tracks were fine, but WAY too loud! Could not have a simple conversation without resorting to shouting at each other. And it's clear the bartenders were/are aware of the volume issue because they could NOT hear our order, even when we're almost face-to-face. A lot of awkward repeating of orders and pointing at things. With the combination of the bright store lights AND the bar music cranked up to volume 11, it crumbled any attempt to create an inviting space to enjoy a drink/snack/conversation. The food: Yikes. Their specials for the night were carne asada tacos and a salmon plate. We ordered one of each plate and both were blah enough that we marked this eatery completely off our list of regular hangouts. Too many other great places around to eat/drink and there's no need to keep this place on our regular list. We will not be returning to The 2ND. read more

Let's be honest, I murder their burger special for lunch almost 4-5 days a week. The staff are all courteous and most of the time know me by what I order, I don't even have to say it: BURGER SPECIAL! No bueno. They have about 36 beers on tap and very few are interesting. Food is pretty passable (chef is very nice), but the bar service is not good at all. Should've kept the old format, esp since you can no longer purchase prepared food or grocery items at the beer bar. Seems like a mistake. read more
