This is another restaurant that I wish I'd visited before their last of business but I'm glad I made it. This is a quiet, cozy, restaurant located on Montgomery Street. There is a smaller menu right now but the food is delicious. If you are hoping for a certain dish it may be a good idea to all that they have all the ingredients ahead of time. For example, I ordered the chopped walnut, goat cheese, and baked pear salad but was told they didn't have and baked pear when it was served to me. Otherwise the food was great. I loved that there was the RI style calamari on the menu. The butternut squash ravioli was tasteful. It's worth a visit before they close. Their last day of service is 12/31. read more

We came in for dining week and it was our first time visiting 317. For anyone that doesn't know, restaurants participating in Downtown Syracuse Dining Week usually put together deals, specials, or limited menus for a set price. The variety on the 317 menu really stood out to us. The portions were sized down due to dining week, but everything was tasty! I will have to come back after dining week and try their normal offerings, but they're a bit on the pricey side so I was glad we got such a good deal tonight. Every individual glass of wine was $12, so we opted to split a $40 bottle between 4 people. The duck poutine and the pear goat cheese salad were favorites! The ambiance really stands out at 317! This historical building has so much charm, and the wood and brick made a warm, inviting setting. Some of the tables, and the bathrooms, are down a set of stairs. I think this is really unique and I liked how the restaurant used the flow of the old building, but definitely something to keep in mind if you are dining with anyone that has mobility issues. When we arrived, we waited at the entrance for a few minutes before anyone greeted us or checked us in. The entry way is a small space with tables surrounding it, so waiting was a little awkward. We only saw 2 servers working the dining areas, and the kitchen staff were delivering meals. My husband and I are visiting Syracuse from Michigan decided to hit the town for a date night. We were looking for quality food served in a pleasant environment. After much research, we decided on 317 @ Montgomery. We made reservations for 7 and arrived early, taking our time finding parking. The street that it is located on is historical and beautiful. The streets were clean and street parking was easy to find. There was a lot less than a block away as well. Upon arriving we were greeted by our server Mike, who seated us. He was professional from the moment we met him to the moment we left. Mike was an exceptional server. He was prompt, attentive, kind, funny and polite and provided us with 5 star service. We were very impressed by his professionalism and elite social skills. The food was nothing short of phenomenal. We started out with the Creamy dip with Lump Crab, Roasted corn and Artichoke Hearts.  The crab was Smokey and the sweetness of the corn paired beautifully with the artichoke hearts and creamy sauce. It was served with Naan that was soft on the inside and toasted to perfection on the outside. Next, we each had the Crispy Romaine and House salad, which consisted of Mixed Greens, Tossed in House Made Tarragon Vinaigrette that made my eyes roll into the back of my head. It was topped with creamy crumbled goat cheese, fresh shredded carrots and Nutmeg Dusted Baked Pear that made my mouth water. Quite possibly wine of the most delectable salads I've ever had. For our main course we both decided on the 12oz ribeye, grilled to Perfection, Served with Crispy Smashed Potatoes and Roasted, Sweet and Spicy Heirloom Carrots. My husband got his with the Rosemary Demi-glace and I got the Creamy Peppercorn Sauce. He loved the rosmary Demi-glaze, but I need to toot the horn on the creamy peppercorn sauce. It was just the right amount of spice, adding a tangy bit of heat to each bite, but never overpowering the grilled flavor of the perfectly seared meat. The potatoes were crispy on the outside (actually head a crunch when I split them with my fork) and perfectly soft on the inside. The carrots were mouthwatering and their texture was superb, just the right amount of firmness. Everything was seasoned to perfection. I'm typically someone who adds a lot of salt or pepper to any dish, as I love full flavor meals, and this dish required nothing more. It was absolutely outstanding. Outside of the 5 star flavor, there was 5 star presentation. Each plate was carefully crafted and presented beautifully. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the food tasted even better than it looked. For dessert we got ordered the lemon raspberry cake with a coconut crust and it was light, fluffy, refreshing and paired perfectly with the hot coffee we were served, which was also fantastic. Adding a cherry to the top of our evening, Joel, the owner, came out to greet us and ask us how we enjoyed our meal. We couldn't rave enough. He was so kind, polite, passionate about the restaurant and extremely knowledgeable, even entertaining our questions about the history of the building. He even offered a tour of the rest of the restaurant, which Mike, our server, guided us on. The building was built in the late 1800s and still maintained much of its character, with its unique ceiling, partial brick walls and wood floors, making for an effortlessly moody, peaceful and romantic ambiance. The lighting is soft and warm and the climate inside was comfortable and pleasant, neither too hot or too cold. The walls were covered in tasteful decor that matched the historical character of the restaurant and the floor to ceiling windows out front gave us a front row seat to sunset that glowed off the brick buildings just outside the entrance. All in all, it was one of the best date nights we've ever had. From the 5 star food and service, to the gorgeous decor and historical setting, if you're looking for a knock your socks off meal in a unique and timeless setting, look no further than 317 @ Montgomery. Really eclectic menu which I really appreciated. If you are a Carmel fan the Carmel lava cake is a must!! The cake was very light. I was expecting something more dense and was very pleased with the result!! Chicken Bimbimbop was excellent! If you are adverse to eggs being a bit under done (I am not) make sure to ask them to cook the egg well. Flavors were just amazing! I had not had good Korean food in forever! The food here is TO DIE FOR! I love the pork belly bao buns, and the braised short rib and mushroom risotto. The staff are very friendly and sociable, and the restaurant has a laid back energy even with the fine dining food. People need to start eating here! We went on a Tuesday and the restaurant was practically empty. Because of this we had a wonderful window seat for two. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with clean white tablecloths with visible brick walls and wood trim everywhere. There was enough vegetarian options to keep my wife happy, she had a flatbread and the stuffed poblano peppers. Both items were delicious. I enjoyed the pork belly bao buns and the burger. Everything was cooked well and tasted very nice. They only have wine and beer if you are looking for a drink, but had a nice selection of both. I think this is a great place that deserves a better following. Though I'll enjoy the intimate atmosphere until that happens. read more

Wonderful dinner place, we're kicking ourselves for not trying it earlier! The historic wood and brick setting is charming, the service was friendly and courteous, and the food was delicious! We tried the pork belly bao buns that so many other reviewers mentioned and were not disappointed! The rest of the dinner was lovely as well, with enough variety to please us both. The only desserts offered were cakes sourced from Biscotti, but since I love cakes from Biscotti, that was no problem for me. We will definitely be returning! My only caveat is that the stairway down to the basement bathroom could be tricky to navigate if you have mobility issues, so suggest calling ahead to see if they have alternate options. read more

Hey, the description on-line has had me a bit hesitant to try this place ('fusion' can sometimes be a mess), but I was delighted we did. Joel was working the front of house with one helper, but he managed to make it all happen, and was friendly and helpful despite being pretty busy. We both started with the Caesar salad, which had a great bright dressing, and a generous serving of greens. This was above-average. I then had the duck confit poutine, which was very solid. The fries were good but not great, with a so-so texture, but the quality of the curds and meat made up for that. (I'm not sure if the fries were double-fried, but it didn't taste like it.) My sweetie had the salmon special, which was skillfully cooked so that it came out firm but still moist. She was uncharacteristically pleased. I was delighted with the beer selection, including some highly-rated northeast brews that I was unfamiliar with, and my sweetie enjoyed the wine. Joel was especially cool about coaxing his point-of-sale software into letting her get a second half-glass. All in all, a solid local option. We'll be back! read more

First sign of potential concern was that it was a Friday at 5:30pm in downtown Syracuse and we were the only ones there with the exception of 2 people at the bar for drinks. I was hoping it was because it was a pretty cold day. Now I don't know if that's the case. Based on reviews and the menu, we decided to try a new spot. I am trying to hard to support local small places and hoping in the process to find my next new favorite go-to restaurant. This has proved pretty futile. I admittedly have high standards with food and the service but don't think that's too much to ask, depending on where you are. So we're seated in a small front room in the window and it was cold. They obviously know that temp is an issue in here as they had 2 space heaters there. The view was nice but it was cold. In hindsight, I think they wanted to give the appearance of having people in there to any passerby. If you read my other reviews, I'm consistent. I drink water and a lot of it and one of my biggest issues is when I'm sitting there thirsty and the waitstaff doesn't keep my water full (especially with as salty as this food was but we'll get there). So being the only table, you'd think our waitress would have been on top of keeping our glasses full. Nope! You start with some bread - it was some kind of cranberry focaccia maybe? The butter came in the little mini plastic packets with the foil lid you peel back. Not like the butter I saw in some prior reviews that they whipped up there and put in a small ramekin. For Apps: Hubby had the brie - it was warmed in a small skillet and had something that we couldn't place on top of it - it looked like soft candied fruit. It came with small toast pieces to eat. The portion was huge and the taste was pretty good. I had the gold and red beet bruschetta - it came on the same toasts that I felt had the appearance of just being pre-packaged toasts. It was okay but not for the $12 that it was. We both had the filet - it's a 6oz filet and came with green beans -maybe 10 or so and a potato side that was similar to au gratin or scalloped but had different cheeses, including either gorgonzola or blue. The filet was heavily salted. I ended up leaving at least an ounce of steak on the plate as it was fatty and had the tough tendon type of white stuff streaked through. My husband's steak was not as bad with the fat/tendons. You could tell when mine came it out that it may be like that as the top was separating - it almost looked like someone cut little slits in the top. Overall, the total was approx $90-100 as my husband had one glass of red wine. I personally wouldn't return here - it was too salty (I was so parched the next morning) and combine that with the lack of keeping my water full when the restaurant was empty, would concern me that when it's busy, you'd be really parched. read more

I was excited to try their chicken bibimbap bowl. The pictures of it looked delicious. I believe I was one of the first people in for lunch when they opened and it came out pretty quickly. However I was very surprised and disappointed at the state of the food that I received. I paid 20 bucks for the half chicken bibimbap and it was not giving worth 20 dollars... The rice was undercooked but greasy to the point that it was leaking through the container and into the bag. And the chicken thighs just looked grey and unseasoned. Couldn't even get through a couple bites. Super expensive for what they're putting out. The only good about this meal were the bean sprouts and shaved carrots they gave as toppings. My husband & I came to celebrate our new marriage and we were beyond pleased with the food and service here. We had their three course dinner and each course was filling, flavorful, and great quality. I definitely recommend trying their duck confit poutine (appetizer) and their cioppino (entree). We had told them prior that we would be coming to celebrate our marriage, and when we got there, there was fresh flowers at our table, a congratulations sign, and the owner came over to wish us well. Tough to write a review when things are almost very good but let down by others. I would give 5 stars for the food. No doubt about that. The crispy pork belly was sublime. Served on a bed of celeriac puree with a fruit compote to cut through the richness. Totally delicious and definitely saying "come back for more" The steak was done perfectly with a rich demi glace and fingerlings and asparagus....thank god NO overdone tasteless, pointless squash!!!! However, no bread and/or dipping oil/butter to start which is usual even in much more down-market places. Very expensive wine by the glass. I thought $10 was a lot for a small glass of an extremely boring, ordinary cab. My knife had a bent tip which for me, at least is not really acceptable and I had to clean it off on my serviette. A rocky table which the waitress (who was excellent btw) had to prop up. Really not her job. I had to go into the kitchen to find someone to seat us. I'm sure many people think I'm quibbling here but $100+ for two people should ensure these small niggling problems don't occur. Saving grace, the food. Wonderful. I hope these little issues are addressed as it can mean the choice of fine dining goes to another business which would be a great shame. read more

They were really kind to accommodate our walk in and sat us within 10 minutes of arriving. We came to have dinner before a show at Landmark and this looked good and was within walking distance of the theater. The owner greeted and ended up serving us (assuming maybe short staffed for the eve?) He was very kind and explained the specials in detail. We ordered a filet and the grouper special and then the place filled up. At that point I think maybe the kitchen was overwhelmed. Our food took a very long time, with the owner coming out a few separate times to tell us it was almost done and apologize. We had about 20 minutes to get to the theater when the food arrived, so assuming it took about 45 minutes to prepare. The owner was obviously apologetic then went running around to deal with other tables. I cut into my medium steak and it was rare to mid-rare. I can't do red in my steak or if I do it's very little, so I was pretty disappointed. One of the servers came over to check on us and I mentioned that I had ordered medium but that we had the show so I was afraid to send it back. She apologized. My date likes his steak more rare so he ate most of it and I had some of his fish. The sauce on the steak was a bit salty and overpowered the meat. The potatoes and green beans with it were unremarkable. The Grouper was actually pretty fishy, while I usually find it quite mild. The sauces on the plate paired nicely with the fish, but I didn't see anything on his plate that looked like chorizo ragu. Okay. It's a restaurant. I want to write about the food. But I'm mostly going to write about Donna, because I'm obsessed with her - more about that later. First - I can't remember what this place used to be called, but I loved it then and then it closed for a little while and I forgot about it. Then it reopened as 317 and I've only been back a couple of times, and I don't know why. I need to get back more often. Okay, so last night, we made it back finally and I think Donna was the ONLY person working. She's the only employee we saw our entire visit. Yes - the food was great. Everything was great. BUT DONNA WAS AMAZING. She'd been our server previously at another restaurant, she didn't remember us, but we remembered her. She's amazing. She was busy but never made us wait. She was endearing and funny and professional and the service was amazing and every single table felt like the most important table and we left feeling like her best friends. Had dinner there last night (Wednesday) with a party of five. Had a table next to the fireplace in a fairly empty restaurant, which is a little hard to understand given the quality of the food, wine, and service, which were all excellent. The room was cozy and reasonably quiet. Perfect evening for a small group of friends in an intimate atmosphere with great food. I had a house salad and the short rib with wild mushroom risotto - delicious. Others had the fish of the day (salmon, perfectly cooked), stuffed pork chop and butternut squash ravioli. Really tasty. The chocolate cake with layers of chocolate mousse for dessert from Biscotti, a local dessert purveyor, was a huge hit. We will be back! read more

Absolutely some of the best food and service to be experienced. The restaurant has a really nice intimate atmosphere, the suggested wine was wonderful and was paired wonderfully with my meal. The appetizers were delicious and I am not a poutine fan, but their Duck Confit poutine was some of the best I ever had! My husband ordered the Short Ribs w/Mushroom Risotto-he's not a big fan of risotto but again, loved 317 Montgomery's risotto! He also, really enjoyed the appetizers and the short ribs too. My seafood dish was a crab and scallop stuffed Sole with lobster cream sauce sauce.. I'm a picky fish person and this was hands down one of the best seafood dishes I've ever had! Had dinner here after long COVID hiatus. We like the earthy decor including bare brick and tin ceiling façade. Menu is limited as they were gearing up for dine around week. We were glad to see people were coming back again to eat inside. New owner Joel waited on our table initially. He was very welcoming and appreciative that we came in. We started with salads, house greens and Caesar. Both were excellent, fresh greens and delicious dressings. For an appetizer we shared the Duck Confit Pountin. Very ample sized and addictively delicious. We ended up taking a 1/3 home with us. Our entrees were Pork Shank Agrodolce and Pan Seared Salmon. Both were tasty and prepared perfectly. We shared a tuxedo cake accompanied with fresh pressed coffee. The perfect ending to a delicious meal. If you are looking for top notch dining with excellent service and ambiance then you will love 317! Inviting and relaxing decor with oil paintings hung with shaded lighting on bare red brick walls. A full bar is set to the side and tables are dressed in white tablecloth with small pots of thyme. We started with a goat cheese bruschetta which was dressed with fresh goat cheese, tomato, beets in a balsamic vinaigrette and pomegranate reduction. It was fresh and delicious, the mild cheese enhanced by the vinaigrette and reduction. For mains, I had the Maple Leaf Farm breast of duck, on golden couscous with raisins and cranberries, and roasted cauliflower. My companion had the filet mignon with sweet potato mash and green beans, in a rosemary demi-glace. The duck was just in this side of well done with some pink but was tender and sweet especially with the couscous. The filet mignon was well done but still tender and juicy. However the sweet potato mash was not a hit as it was prepared with aniseed and the taste was unfortunately jarring. There was not a huge choice of dessert ; there were a peanut butter pie, flourless chocolate torte and a carrot cake. We chose the chocolate torte which was like sweet soft chocolate which melted in your mouth. Service was amazing and the server was knowledgeable and friendly. Sigh I am not sure what is up with me but I have not felt inspired to write as of late, as some of you might have noticed. I have been to great restaurants and enjoyed lovely food but nothing moved me enough to sit down and write about. . . Until now that is so I apologize in advance if my writing is a little rusty, I promise to work on it :-) In my absense, I have been browsing the world wide web of food menus and reviews and in my constant desperate search of finding delicious food to tickle my tastebuds, I came across 317 Montgomery when they first opened several months back. I finally had the chance to try it out and what better way to sample all that the restaurant has to offer than to try their sample tasting menu (of course with wine pairing)!! In all my experiences of tasting menus, not once did the chef asked my party of two if we wanted to try different dishes so that we can expand our samplings!! I was so shocked at the offer I asked to verify that one of us was not going to get short changed with a vegetarian option (not that there's anything wrong with being a vegetarian of course). To our delight the chef paraded various options for us to try (pictures to follow later) and true to his word only our amuse bouche were the same and our dessert of four things were shared. We were beautifully presented with generous (for tasting menu portions) delicious foods that did not disappoint. The wine portions were also very generous as well. This might very well be my favorite restaurant in Syracuse - quiet location with ample street parking, intimate decor and ambience, enjoyable food and plentiful wine portions. I thought quite a bit before submitting this review, but in the end, I had a genuinely disappointing experience. The people there could not have been nicer, the restaurant is beautiful, but the food itself wasn't that great, and it was not cheap. My meal began with the "Perfectly Seared Scallops" which were not, in fact, perfectly seared. They were cooked within an inch of their lives, seriously overcooked, dry hard and rubbery. I realize scallops are tricky, but for almost $20, someone should have been paying closer attention. I was, by the way, the only person in the place, so it's not like there was any pressure on the chef. My entree, which I asked the server to select for me, was the pork shank, served over Brussels sprouts and polenta. It was, as it should be, tender -- it fell off the bone. But it was also basically tasteless. And, at $35, in a place like Syracuse, it should have been a lot better and more flavorful. Add to that a couple of glasses of red wine, and a decent, although unspectacular, dessert, and you have a check approaching $100, and a mediocre dinner. For one. This really could, and should, have been a lot better. read more

317 is the best kept secret in Syracuse. I cannot believe it took this long to discover this unbelievable restaurant. We were walking by and met the owner, Dean, the other week and he was gracious enough to give us a tour. That same evening we came back and couldn't have been happier. went here for restaurant week with party of 4. worst service and food we've ever had. I was yelled at for asking about gluten free options and modifications (they have None and can't). we all ordered different things and requests as simple as "dressing on the side" for the house salad were not fulfilled. Food was terrible, either nauseatingly over seasoned or not seasoned at all. the market fish was giving e.coli. For whatever it's worth, more than one person had to spit out their food. At least it was only $35 read more

Delicious. Highly recommend. Went with friends last night and looking forward to going again soon. Staff was great and the food was amazing. Very nice space. Got the flatbread, egg rolls, beet goat cheese walnut pasta, the chicken, and the risotto. Plus house-made desserts. Definitely stop in. read more
