So so accommodations. No pictures on the walls and the color was a dark blue. Kind of cell like. Housekeeping staff was noisy as they were getting their supplies from the supply area on the second floor. Check in was courteous. The electricity was scary, the lights dimmed when the heater and the fridge clicked on. Not sure they did any more than a surface remodel. Paint already chipping away in several places. The view was nice but there were several vans parked on the street in front that looked occupied. Didn't feel safe walking back from NYE Beach after dark. read more

We had a delightful stay at The Whaler! While it's technically a motel, it feels more like a hotel. The King room had plenty of space and the bed was very comfortable. Bonus: there was a fridge and a microwave in the room. Service was great and the lobby offers tea, coffee, juice, and popcorn throughout the day. Our third floor balcony provided a great view of the ocean. Beach access is just down the street. One thing to note is the showers are pretty short - if you're very tall you may need to look elsewhere or be okay bending down while showering. read more

When I called the hotel, the receptionist for The Whaler was very nice. We stayed at the motel for one night. The hotel front desk people are very nice as well. Our room was clean. The bed was comfortable. There was a microwave and a small fridge. The unobstructed view was amazing. What I did notice was the room had an odor to it. I especially noticed it while standing near the sink. My husband said he could barely smell something. We went to the hot tub. The hot tub/pool area was clean. They keep a supply of towels in the hot tub/pool area. While we were there someone came in to replenish the towels. A great perk to the motel is their breakfast bites. You are given an order form at check in. On the order form there are choices of Bob's Red Mill instant oatmeal cups, Greek yogurts, fruit and beverages. Whatever you choose, they will bag it up and have it ready for you in the morning for pickup at the office. read more

Because of COVID, breakfast was takeout style and could be picked up from the lobby. The options are all healthy and kid friendly. Friendly staff adds to the positive vibe. Great first experience! If there's one thing I'd urge this place to consider it's air conditioning. It can get pretty humid and especially the night with young kids can be rough. Stayed there with a friend for the first time, she's been multiple times and always enjoys it. The rooms all have small balcony with a great view of the beach. You have a mini fridge and microwave in the room, which are clean and fresh. We were offered complimently breakfast items like oatmeal, muffins, yogurt and fruit. There is a hot beverage bar for cocoa, coffee and tea. Also free bags of popcorn if you want to hang out in your room and watch the free HBO or cable TV. Internet worked great also. They hire intolerant staff who mock people who have disabilities. I wrote a long review about my negative experience and curiously enough it was deleted. I wrote the review on Monday night and it's now Friday and no one from the hotel has attempted to reach out to me to tell the incident has been addressed with staff. This is a great hotel. They don't lie about the view it is spectacular from every room! The ada room is huge, well equipped with exception of the bed being 4 feet off the ground. Come prepared to need assistance getting into bed if you are a wheelchair user. Front desk staff are very friendly and helpful. There is an amazing paved path way to the ocean directly in front of hotel. Tons of restaurants and shops within walking distance of hotel. Lots to see and enjoy. Plenty of parking. The continental breakfast was simple but more than adequate for a quick grab and go start to our day. Rooms was very well maintained and clean. Would definitely stay here again. read more

Ok maybe for some folks this place isn't fancy enough for them but for us at this price the hotel was super. Third floor room with a balcony just big enough for the two of us. Fire place and king sized bed were nice and too. Room cleaning service was top shelf. We actually extended our stay a night to enjoy more of the places around newport. Breakfast is lacking but hey the coffee is really good even if they only give toddler sized cups! Would definitely stay here again. read more

We can't imagine staying anywhere else in Newport! The rooms are standard but clean and comfortable,and all rooms have a balcony & ocean view. We love the breakfast "bites". When we stayed six years ago we could go to the lobby and select our breakfast items to take back to the room, but with COVID they have switched to asking guests to pre-order, and they have your breakfast items bagged up for you and ready to go. (Gluten-free options too!) The secret of The Whaler, however, is location, location, location. The path to the beach is directly across the street, and the delicious restaurants and shops in Nye Beach are a short stroll. We also found it was only .8 mile to the bayfront district, although it is a walk with big hills. Up the road 15 minutes is Yaquina Bay Lighthouse State Park. What more can I say? read more

Clean spacious rooms, most with fantastic ocean/beachview. We had a family reunion here by renting one of their beach houses and a bunch of rooms in the motel. The beach house was a great place to meet up for cards, drinks and catching up. It came with a large dining room table, lots of extra chairs plus a card table and folding chairs. The beach access is right across a narrow street and the motel is next to the beach houses. Nye beach is easy walking distance. We walked down to the cafe Stephanie for breakfast and coffee every morning. Beds are firm and comfortable. Staff is very nice and accommodating. We can't thank them enough for being so flexible and making great suggestions for the group. read more

Not sure why there are so many good reviews because this place is pretty bad. We unfortunately stayed here for four nights in July 2022. The hotel is dirty and run down. Big holes in bedding, old dirty drapes being held together with safety pins, toilet cracked, door rotting and oh god the bugs. There's no AC so you have to open slider and window over door to get a cross breeze but then the bugs can just keep coming in. Everything in the room is old, run down and in desperate need of replacement. I wasn't expecting a high end, modern hotel but I was expecting a maintained and clean hotel. The only good, the view. Note though that we were on the first floor so our view included a rundown RV that someone was living out of parked on the street in front of our room. I know not the hotels fault but disappointing. We stayed here because we were traveling with a dog. They advertise as dog friendly but be warned they have no grass or doggy potty area on the property. There's a field to the back of the parking lot and a park down the street on the beach side. Not very convenient for night time potty breaks. Maybe their non-pet rooms are nicer. Our room was also not ready at checkin time. We arrived around 5, check in was 4 but our room wasn't ready till close to 7. The manager did compensate us for the late checkin and poor room condition so I gave a star for that. I did feel like this was a bait and switch though where online photos don't really show the actual condition and maybe they have people leave fake reviews. I have a hard time believing this many people actual enjoy paying $$$ to stay in such poor accommodations. read more

The Whaler has a fabulous spa with lots of windows and sky lights so you feel almost like your outside. The motel is very clean, and they left us top level snacks!! We had a 1st floor two queen bed, pet friendly room with the BEST oceanview AND the dune landscaping is very special --breathtaking (the review above is incorrect because the view was spectacular)! Our dog let himself out of the room while we were in the spa because he is clever. If you have a dog that can open latch doors, don't leave them inside. The room felt cramped and balcony we had to go through sideways to sit down - furniture just too large for the space. I recommend smaller furniture. Also there were no pictures on the dark blue walls making us feel claustrophobic. The desk chair in the middle of the room took what little floor space we had! Pacific kitchen breakfast sandwiches were delicious a la cart just outside the door - hot tip* scan the code provide in your room to pre-order! The coffee in the room was delicious. The pagoda nearby looks like it's going to be landscaped and the children's park and full restaurant within 5 minutes walking was so so nice. Overall a nice stay but I might book at nearby places just because the balcony is where we wanted to spend most of our time and it was way too small. Also I wanted a bathtub, but I think staying at one of the suites would fix all of that. Charge less for these tiny queen bed rooms -- the price is not warranted for how cramped it is!! read more

This hotel is lovely. A bit shocked people left reviews under 5 stars. I'm not sure how anything could be bad. All rooms have a ocean view. All windows are double pane in case you don't want to hear the ocean. However we slept with our patio door wide open. Check out is noon HELLO NOON??! yes noon that was a double bonus! Stayed here for a night due to a heavy rain storm on our tent camping trip with my dad and two dogs. Times like this made me very thankful for Yelp! I was having a difficult time finding a semi-decent motel that allowed bigger dogs and wasn't in a sketchy part of Newport. It's $10 extra per night, per dog. It's another $10 extra if you want a room on the 3rd floor (which is totally worth it if you ask me). We slept with the balcony door open; it was so relaxing listening to the waves while falling asleep. The room seemed clean, could use some updating but the view made it worth it. If I remember correctly, the total cost for a night with two dogs and two queen size beds was somewhere around $120. Although we didn't have the time to use it, the motel has an indoor pool/spa. They also have continental style breakfast, nothing too fancy though. read more

A paved path down to the beach is conveniently located right across the street. The swimming pool is lovely, and if you choose the right time, you can have it all to yourself. The room has a mini-fridge and coffee maker but no microwave. Free copies of the local paper are provided.The location is within easy walking distance of the charming restaurants, galleries, performing arts center, and shops of Nye Beach. The only weak spot is the continental breakfast, which is minimal, with marginal coffee. However, free popcorn is available, which makes a handy snack. I have to give them a special shout out for ethics: While we had booked our weekend at the AAA discount of $147 a night, they were running a special and actually LOWERED our bill to $122 and $114 per night. Had they not done so, we never would have known. But they did so automatically! We will be back! read more

The cleaner this hotel is using to clean for covid is overwhelming, I wear a cpap and I could smell the stench from my mask all night. when I woke at 7am I didn't shower just packed up and got out ! I went to the office told the lady at the desk she just laughed and said oh its just the cleaner and we love it, I told her it was disgusting and they need a new cleaner, I have stayed in 7 other hotels along the coast this week and they didn't seem to have a problem with the same cleaner for covid. This motel was great. We stayed only 1 night, but will definitely be back. At check in they provided us with a welcome packet with all the restaurants around us. They are pet friendly and provided our dog with a treat, poop bags, and clean sheet to lay on. Our room was clean, had free WiFi, and had a great view. They have a great continental breakfast order system. You fill out what you want and they bag it up for you to take back to your room the same night. Also, the motel is across a quiet street from the beach. The Whaler exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be back. read more

Before my family and I moved to Newport, the Whaler was our go-to spot to stay on the coast during our vacations. The prices are reasonable and the view is awesome. You are just across the street from the beach and the ocean. The Whaler does have an indoor pool and hot tub. Haven't personally ran into any service issues with staff, although sometimes they are a bit slow or disengaged. The rooms are OK; the beds could be a little nicer and the rooms could use some color and sprucing up but these are clearly adequate. Now that I have moved from Newport, the next family coastal vacation will be to Newport and my family and I will definitely be staying at the Whaler while we are there. read more

This place was a wonderful find last week as we travelled north on 101. Great view, comfortable clean room. Unlike every other motel on this trip, they did not use Covid as an excuse to close the pool and hot tub and avoid giving breakfast. You made you menu selections the night before and picked up the paper bagged breakfast the next morning. The staff was uniformly cheerful and going above and beyond. There are good and bad things about this place. It is dog friendly and was available last minute when most Airbnb's were booked. The bed is quite comfortable and the TV in our room was very large. The room was definitely very clean, including the bathroom so I do need to give them kudos for that. I'm sure if you are on the second or third floor the view is much better. We were on the first floor and we basically had a view of houses across the street. We could not really see the ocean that well. There is a small park behind the motel so you can walk your dog to go to the bathroom which is nice. The staff in the lobby are very nice and they have coffee and tea and popcorn for guests which I thought was very cute. The noise level is not good, again being on the first floor is probably worse. The walls and ceilings are very thin so we could Hear everything our neighbors and the people above us were doing, and I'm sure the people above us were not stomping around their room but it definitely sounded like it. Cars and motorcycles drive on the road in front of the motel and it amplifies in the room. The place is obviously old so the neighboring rooms plumbing is insanely loud. The cable connection on the tv is spotty so a lot of the channels aren't watchable because they freeze and pixelate. There is no screen on the balcony door which I found odd, since it means you'll get bugs in your room if you leave the door open (which is over half the reason the room is any good). They did leave a dog bed, 2 bowls, and poop bags in the room for our dog which I thought was a lovely touch. I think my biggest issue is the price. It was $250 for one night which I understand is primarily due to the location (Newport is a very touristy beach town) but I just didn't see the value at that price. However if you don't care about how much you spend, and need a clean place in a pinch, this will do. read more

Due to a booking.com error, we were booked onto a much smaller room than we had requested... When we arrived, the hotel staff informed us that they were nearly at capacity and no larger rooms were available. Instead of simply telling us "tough luck", the friendly and helpful staff went WAY above and beyond to help us out.. They switched us from the really small, "standard room" to a THREE BEDROOM HOUSE across the street! We travel a lot and have never been treated so graciously by any staff anywhere... The whaler in really does want their guests to be happy and the staff here is 2nd to none... They took what was a difficult and disappointing situation and turned it into a dream come true... If you're traveling to Newport Oregon, you owe it to yourself to stay at the Whaler Inn.. read more

Do not stay here! My brother and sister-in-law stayed here in April 2021 and she accidentally left her beautiful wedding ring on the nightstand. She called hotel staff as soon as she realized her mistake, and has been given the run around ever since. They gave her a phone number for the manager and when she called, it was a fax machine number. Management has not been in touch as promised and she is still without restitution or any help at all from the hotel. Someone obviously stole it her beautiful wedding ring (either the front desk or the cleaners) and the hotel refuses to cooperate. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR ROOM. Stay somewhere else. The police were much more helpful when they called to report the theft, but still no sign of the ring and the hotel won't offer any help. read more

The staff were very friendly upon checking in and throughout our stay. We stayed in a queen suit on the second floor and our ocean view was absolutely beautiful. The rooms are not super fancy but they were spacious and extremely clean. Breakfast can be picked up at the front desk in the morning to go. Also a big plus for us is The path to the beach is literally just across the street. I would 100% recommend this motel and plan on going again soon. read more
