We had the most amazing meal tonight! The servers and staff were friendly and efficient and we highly recommend this place!!! We drove about 90 minutes because we heard it was worth the drive and we agree! We started with the Tomato Pie (get it!!!). I had steak with the BEST smashed potatoes I've ever had. Very creamy and delicious and my filet was cooked perfectly with great seasoning on the sear. My husband had salmon with asparagus, smashed potatoes and Gouda cheese grits, which he loved. Y'all, they LITERALLY load up veggies from a farm in the morning and cook them same-day! Dessert was homemade banana cream pie. Wish we had taken pics of it but it was huge and super tasty. I wish this place was in Tallahassee! Amazing menu with so many options. We came in for lunch on Saturday. They had bottomless mimosas for $11, good deal. I had the grilled turkey croissant with kale salad and Brian had the daily special--prime rib French dip with fries. Both were delicious but the French Dip was the best I have ever tasted! The meat was smoky and tender, the bread was moist and chewy. Just delicious! They know how to prepare food properly here and they do not have a freezer or microwave. Everything is fresh and made in house! The ambiance is just as charming as the entire downtown square. I highly recommend stopping in for lunch or dinner and taking a stroll around the Bainbridge square. They allow open containers in the historic district, and are really focused on attracting visitors. Also the people working at the American are super friendly and helpful. The American was worth the drive from Tallahassee! We came to celebrate a birthday with a group of 12 on a Friday evening. Inside is cozy. Deep navy walls, antique portraits, cowhides in the ground. A modernized southern elegance vibe. The menu was broad, veggie friendly too. The table ordered a cheeseboard, cornbread, and a tomato pie - all were well received. Cheeseboard had very generous portions. For dinner the table ordered across the menu: cornbread fried chicken, chipotle rubbed steak, filet, burger, steak salad (mine!), crab cakes. All the food was well cooked, flavorful and nicely presented. Our only challenge of the evening was service. Our hostess sat our party, but didn't bring ample silverware. Our waitress was busy that night, but forgot drink orders. Dinner was served but there was a 15 minute span between the first person receiving food and the last; one persons food wasn't served at all. We were in town visiting with family and they took us to this little gem for dinner. The inside is so charming with fantastic decor. I adored the fact that their refrigerators are on display in the dining room. You can see the fresh meat and veggies knowing you are in for a treat. Our party ordered the skillet cornbread as an appetizer. This was by far some of the best cornbread I've ever had. They serve it with honey to pour on top which just set it over the top. I would say this is a must try. I ordered the steak salad for my entree. I was extremely pleased with my choice. The steak is medium rare and so incredibly delicious. The salad also has some of the best blue cheese crumbles and croutons made of that yummy corn bread. My husband got the hamburger and said that the meat was cooked perfectly and had a great flavor to it. He also enjoyed the fresh fries. My Father also got the hamburger and remarked on how juicy it was. He also enjoyed his meal thoroughly. My sister got the shrimp and grits étouffée. She remarked how fresh it was with just the right amount of spice. My brother in law ordered the cornbread fried chicken. It's a chicken breast and not on the bone. It's served atop a bed of greens with a sriracha honey sauce. I tried a bite of the greens and was incredibly impressed. And then the crowning jewel of the meal was the goat cheese cheesecake. If you are weary of goat cheese don't shy away from this. It was the lightest most perfect slice of cheesecake I've ever had. It's a quaint little place. I think they try to be more upscale with there food than they really are. The wedge salad was fantastic. The Gouda grits were delicious and creamy but needed a little S&P. The filet was cooked perfectly but just bland. If they cooked it with garlic, thyme, and the rosemary and basted the filet with melted butter that would tremendously enhanced the flavor of the steak. It was an excellent cut of meat. All in all not bad for this little town, just needs to polish there techniques in the kitchen a little bit more. I am still in this gem waiting on the check. I just ate a superb meal. A gorgeous filet covered in truffle butter that was amazingly tasty. I'm from out of town. I saw lots of good reviews and was pretty excited about having a nice meal. I came in super hungry. The building is cool and has a really nice view. It has the classic old town GA vibe. I should had ordered some classic GA food in hind sight. The server did a good job explaining the specials and menu items. I ordered the wedge salad and the pasta special which had mussels. I love mussels. Both were not very good. The wedge was small and had very little toppings, almost none. The pasta sauce which sounded very complex when she was explained it to me had lots of garlic which I love, but the pasta was over cooked and the sauce was thin and watery. The last two or three mussels I ate were bad leaving a bad taste in my mouth, literally. I was very hungry and chomped it down anyway. It wasn't terrible, just not what I was expecting from a price point like that. Again, I wish I had gotten a steak or fried chicken, I'm sure that would have been much better. read more
