This is one of my favorite restaurants and I am a city girl from Miami,FL. I come to Bainbridge for work once a year. The food is not only fantastic but the service is great as well. My entire team loved this restaurant very much! So much that we went to this restaurant for lunch and dinner the remaining of the week. I highly recommend the cornbread as an appetizer. If you order a salad the croutons are made from cornbread. That was a very VERY pleasant surprise. My team has ordered half of the menu and we have been very happy with all of our order! The owner has personally passed by our table in each of our visit. You can sense the hard work and dedication him and his family have devoted to the place. We stopped here on a recent trip from Atlanta to Tallahassee. What a cute little town with a wonderful holiday spirit. The restaurant was all that I had read about. Very warm and inviting atmosphere and excellent service. The food....yum! Started with the tomato pie, very good. Then we had the cornbread fried chicken, the filet and a cheese burger. Each of us was super happy with our meals. Only bad thing was very weak coffee after meal, I should have said something, probably a fluke! We look forward to returning, was really great!! read more

Wow. The food quality is exceptional. We went for a client dinner and so we tried many appetizers before the entrees. The barrel cut filet was wood fired and beautifully prepared. There's not much in Bainbridge, GA, but I would go out of my way to eat at The American again. Oh, and well done on the wine list. Had a nice experience here on Friday night. Food was great and server was friendly. The space itself is very nice but a little stark feeling and would benefit from the touch of a traditional interior designer to "warm it up" a bit. There were issues with timing but the manager/owner was extremely gracious and came out at the end and apologized. The server was aware of the issues but rather than speak to us and acknowledge the problem he waited for the manager to do it at the very end. We were in suspense if actually anything was going to be acknowledged but we're very pleasantly surprised. They should have a more proactive approach when problems occur which I told them . I definitely recommend the American and think they are a spectacular addition to the new thriving downtown Bainbridge Town Square and hope they will use my comments constructively as they are intended. read more

What an "American" experience! We came to this beautiful Georgian city because we evacuated for Hurricane Ian, and what a gracious city it is. We chose The American for dinner, which was stunning from the building, atmosphere, staff, and food! All of those mentioned above a 10+! Our server, Haley, went above and beyond helping us when she heard our story and helped us get a room at the Willis Park Hotel. Atmosphere is absolutely amazing. It's a one of a kind, I've never been to a restaurant like it. It's like stepping back in time! The food is fresh and local. The staff is always so nice. The only thing that isn't my favorite is that the menu does rotate at times so what you get one visit you may not get another. I can't complain I'm sure that comes with being a restaurant that serves fresh and local which is much more commendable in my opinion. Will go EVERY time I'm in town. An interesting find in a tiny little town in Georgia! It is obviously named "The American" for a reason, patriotic music, flags, hunting lodge fur and antlers, and imposing patriot portraits are hanging on the wall. It seems that this is where people go to eat when the average pizza/bar burger/bar food won't cut it. Mostly older couples, quiet families, no TVs, just food and company. Low light in the evening accompanied by table candlelight. A few awkward kids on their "Friday Date Night". The food was surprisingly good, again, was a great find in such a small town! The lasagna was OUTSTANDING. Really, I don't usually eat it as it can be embellished with peppers/spice/nonsense, but this was simple, decadent, not spicy, wonderful lasagna. The crab cake entree is SMALL, would not fill a hungry person up, so if you want a small meal, go for it. But if not, you will be left hungry. Fried green tomatoes, was my first experience eating them, not bad! All in all, given the choices, this is probably the only place I would eat at if I came through again! read more

Our first time eating here today. They are newly opened but you could not tell by the way everything was handled. This place is just what Bainbridge needs. Love the old classic building with old bricks. The booths have a high back on them and very comfortable. Very quiet and relaxing. The cornbread with honey on it was very good and southern. The buns that our Burger were on tested very fresh. If you want a classy date lunch or dinner, this is the place for you. We will be back for a dinner meal. I will post some pictures. read more

Came in from Atlanta today for a photoshoot and was recommended to eat here. Oh my goodness, this is the best southern food restaurant you will ever have the pleasure to eat at! What a gem! The American is still newly opened but your experience will tell you that they've been perfecting the experience for years. The menu is simple but elegant, everything from steak and chops to a small but relevant wine list. Don't let my use of the words simple and small fool you or keep you from dining here. Having had the privilege to dine at some amazing places across the country, few have the balance of quality and ambiance without pretentiousness that The American has. On my list of Best Steaks Ever, The American's filet is in my top 5, easily. Fork cutting tender and amazingly seasoned. To top it off, Payton (my server) was attentive and helpful without being overbearing. He was perfect and made the dinner so too. Great start! The American recently opened and I couldn't wait to go and dig in. They have done a great job with the interior of their location on the square. Nice hand picked beer and wine list; great appetizers. I had the Hawaiian Ribeye which was done perfectly with the macque choux on the side. And the Key Lime Pie was out of sight. I drove through this town just to check this place out and I was not disappointed. I wish I could have tried more things on the menu, and the thing that really brought me in is the fresh tomato pie. I have made these before, and eaten them all over the south, but nothing beats this thing. It was light, buttery and the tomatoes were firm and sweet. I also have the heirloom tomato stack which was so fresh and the tomatoes were well chilled and firm. Even the side of kale salad was super yummy! Did not have to think out a five star rating as a casual Saturday lunch encounter. Atmosphere is warm, inviting, charming and comfortable on the well refurbished downtown square buildings. Service was good to excellent, with our official server having the best personality. Tomato pie, crescent sandwich, and wedge salad were top notch. I don't think there are any fails with this establisment menu. Most of the lunch menu is $11-$12. Totally worth it. If nothing else, go for the Key lime pie. The best I have ever had, anywhere, including the Keys. Crust, filling and cream are independently unique, and perfect work perfectly together for this pie. Hmmm...Am here now and was just served laziest salad I have ever seen which consists of a quarter of a head of lettuce sliced off with 8 little cubes of tomato and a few croutons. WTF? No excuse. I was in the mood for a steak so I ordered the chipoltle ribeye since plain old unadulterated steak was not offered on the menu. The steak tasted too salty. Their seasoning squandered all the natural deliciousness of a ribeye cooked medium. The side of fries were good but a good baked potato would have been more satisfying. They do have some good local GA brews which helped dull the pain of my disappointment after such high hopes that I had after reading all the glowing reviews. read more

This place is so darn cute, just like the town of Bainbridge in general. My husband and I had a wonderful brunch here. Service was great- good old southern hospitality. The atmosphere inside is really adorable, with old paintings of various historical figures and homey southern decor. I had a steak salad that was sooo delicious, and the staff was willing to alter some of the ingredients per my specific dietary request. I'll be back! read more

So me & my family went one night. Was very surprised at how pricey EVERYTHING was. The four of us just ordered hamburgers & fries. It was 60$!!! I mean..come on. Decatur County is about one of the poorest counties in the state of Ga & you have your prices like we are in Alpharetta or something.. The hamburgers were just ok. It definitely was not worth the price. I've had MUCH BETTER hamburgers at Beef O'Bradys or hell, even Red Robin. You really need to lower your prices. We won't be back. read more
