Awful customer service specifically the lady floor manager. I only go there because i want to eat healthy chicken and beef. Always smells fishy and weird...overpriced rotisserie chicken and salad bar. Don't bother trying to charge your electric car there is always occupied for regular cars and should be ONLY electric parking spots. This place should be 5 stars. And maybe once in a while it's like that. But those times are few and far between. On a 5 star day (rare event), you can find fresh prepared food in the self serve section. The pizzas are running on all cylinders. And the service is professional. More typical i.e. most of the time: Tired left out self serve food that is unappetizing. Angry and irritable staff. Yes, some are patient, but most aren't. In the bakery section, there is one employee you don't want to ask any questions. Just order your pastry and don't make eye contact and you'll be fine. Makes for a pleasant experience. Chaotic ordering scene. Take a number but don't expect anything good to come of it. People waiting in line behind you and in front of you will become confused (and so will you) when the person behind the counter calls on different people regardless of the number you have. Some nasty exchanges between patrons because of this. Great way to start a meal. Pizzas not always running on all cylinders. Many not regularly made and if they are have been sitting out for a while. Even after having been heated up in the oven still don't taste fresh. Tables are often dirty and covered with crumbs. Gross. I stopped ordering the refrigerated vegetarian items that are not self serve (hummus, tofu, garbanzo bean salad, etc.) because on two occasions I got the runs the next day. May not be related but I wasn't going to take any more chances. You know the old shame on you first time, shame on me second time mantra. Most customers are long time patrons of the grocery store next door and are very forgiving of what goes on here so if you like to put up with sh*tty service as long as the food's organic you'll love it here. Otherwise, you'll be kicking yourself each time you come here (like I do shame on me) and wish you had gone to Whole Foods on Gilman instead. This place has great customer service. I ordered 2slices of pepperoni pizza and 2 slices of cheese pizza. The woman who put it in the oven to warm it up- left it in there too long i guess- resulting in burning the slices a bit. I told her because of time restraint that we will just eat the burnt slices. Daryl, a gentlemen who was asked to help me pay for my order- insisted that they warm up new slices. I told him its ok we will just take the burnt ones. He told me ok then i wont charge you for burnt pizza. After him and his lady associate thought about it- they decided they would warm up 4more slices and give me the burnt pieces as well since i was ok eating it. We love El Cerrito Natural Food Company Annex! Back in November of 2016, we were visiting family and decided to go out in a late night coffee run. We arrived at this magical place--coffee, hot chocolate (for the kiddo), and then as a fun moment of adventure--SHOTS OF WHEATGRASS! The staff was great and we had a very fun time! Taking off one star because they don't police their EV parking space. It's often full of non plugin cars. OVERPRICED! I waited with eager anticipation for this place to finally open, but when it did I discovered that the selection of foods is very limited, and the prices are through the roof. Today, for example, I bought a small container of chicken noodle soup. It cost $5. When I got it home I poured it into a measuring cup and discovered it wasn't even a full cup -- it was only three-fourths of a cup. They really should be ashamed, gouging customers like this. But I guess it's a captive market, with Whole Foods and Adronico's too far away to compete. read more

The pastries are awesome! They use all organic ingredients - even organic sugars. The white refined sugars that most other bakeries used are banned here. I love the raspberry and german chocolate cupcakes - not overly sweet - perfectly executed. The caramel and chocolate eclairs are to die for, and it's organic! This is my new neighborhood spot. I usually go to the park with my kid then walk here to pick up a snack before we head home. It's an easy in and out kind of place with all kinds of quick food options. My favorite place in there is the wine and craft beer section. The people working that counter always know their stuff about those specialty items. Offering suggestions, and making sure you're getting something you'll enjoy. My daughter loves the florist section, she loves picking out flowers to bring home. And of course, she doesn't ever let us leave without getting a PB & J smoothie, which is actually pretty delicious. What I like most is the open seating and cleanliness of the food annex. I always seem to have a hard time picking something to eat. The taste of the food is better than average but nothing to write home about, honestly. Nothing there I would specifically call out or absolutely feel like I had to go there to have sort of place. Compared to Whole Foods bar, I'd say the food annex is more expensive and less tasty... sorry to say that. I hope they improve!! read more

This is the first time going to this place and it's amazing. It's very similar to whole foods. They have a coffe area, ice cream area, dessert area, sandwiche area, a salad bar, a pizza area and more! So much to choose from but I decided to go with pizza. I was amazed at the selection they had. I choose to do with the pesto chicken pizza, which was labeled as seasonal. When I bit into it, I realized not only was it awesome but also had sweet potato baked into it. Genius! The coconut lentil soup caught my eye because it said coconut and I love coconut. It also did not disappoint and tasted amzing. The people there were very friendly and helpful. I plan to go back and try every section of foods they offer. read more

We waited and waited for the Prepared Food Annex to open. I think there were permit issues w/ the City of Richmond, where the store itself actually is, though the address is in El Cerrito. It's a former paint store and they've done a fabulous job of renovating it inside and out. The facade is beautiful. Finally it opened, and even then it took a long time for their stock to be complete. Again, not their fault. Bit by bit the different areas were completed, bakery and ice cream/gelato, cheeses, Mary's rotisserie chickens, meat-based salads and vegetable-based ones and a salad bar. As they've grown their hours have expanded. There are tables to eat in and there's takeout. A few months ago I bought half a rotisserie chicken for dinner on a night when Alan was out w/ a friend. They have three flavors: a Cajun spice (I think), a lemon and herb and salt and pepper. All they had left was a salt and pepper, which would not have been my first choice. It was good, not great. Alan has bought home prepared salads to complete our dinner and they were good, but I didn't feel ready to write a review until now. Yesterday I came here to buy last night's dinner. I came early enough that I had my choice of chickens and took a lemon/herb one. I looked at the salads and asked the woman behind the counter if these were all they had. She explained that these were the meat-based salads and helpfully directed me around the corner to the vegetable-based ones. On my way over there my eye was caught by a stunning potted Nobile Dendrobium orchid. It was covered w/ a profusion of blossoms and was only $24. Mine! Into my basket it went. I looked in the salad case. There was an interesting looking salad w/ quinoa and tofu from a local tofu company. There was a salad of mixed mushrooms that looked wonderful. I asked for a medium sized container of the mushroom salad. As the server was spooning it into the container one of his colleagues brought out a large container of a gorgeous looking beet salad, so I requested a medium size container of that too. I ordered a small container of the quinoa salad. All their containers are certified compostable. The tops look recyclable. The man helping me was very friendly and when he finished he told me I could check out at any register. I moved to the closest one and a nice young man appeared and rang me up. When I got home I refrigerated everything. At dinnertime I cut up the chicken and we put out the three salads. The chicken was very flavorful and it was large enough that we still have some left. The mushroom salad was really disappointing. Neither of us liked the dressing, which masked and overwhelmed the earthiness of the mushrooms rather than enhancing it. So sad. The quinoa salad we liked better and the beet salad sang and danced in our mouths. Because the sign hadn't been put up yet I didn't know what the other ingredients were, but the label on the container said it was beets and fennel and I tasted basil. I love their in-store salad labels, which are very detailed. Salt is one of the last ingredients in all of them, which is good for Alan's low sodium diet. This is a good solid takeout option and we will shop here again. As for the orchid, it's ensconced on the bathtub, looking glorious. read more

I've been shopping at El Cerrito Naturals and Berkeley Naturals for the past 15 years. I love the markets, and am there about every day (the only place where you know ALL the produce is organic and much of it from local farms). When the Annex was being built I was very excited. When the Annex opened it took a while to get things moving, but it has consistently been improving. I hear what the others are saying about customer service, but I do see as the staff learns, they are getting better and better. It seems to me the Annex takes pride in hiring from the local community, which is important, and gives folks who may really need it a chance. What I have to say, most importantly to me, is that 90+% of the food in the Annex is ORGANIC! That is hard to find, and is at the top of my list for eating out (which means my options are few). Yes, you have more options and they are more organized at Whole Foods, but they are a National chain, with a lot more funding and lot less ethics when it comes to what they are actually serving (99% non organic - definitely no organic meats served in their deli or food bars). On the other hand the Annex serves all of the food that you can purchase at the store next store, and their is no GMO, commercial raised, non organic, pesticide ridden food there. This place is offering quality, down to the fact that they don't even use canola oil in their cooking, or salad dressings which is also of utmost importance to me. This is why it is a bit more expensive, but you can count of the meat being local organic, ethically raised, salmon wild, beef pasture raised etc. The vegetables local, organic, all made in - house, fresh, and served to you from people within this community who may not have had the most experience, but were given a chance to have a good job, with a great company - and I've seen them growing, learning and getting much more efficient. At the coffee bar, not only are the tea's and coffee's organic and fair trade, but they use all organic milk from Straus farms, a local organic dairy, plus organic alternative milks for those that don't drink dairy. They have some gluten-free options, I would love to see more of those and perhaps some paleo or raw desserts, but they have an all organic ice cream bar, with a couple of vegan options form Green Girl, another local company who sweeten their coconut ice cream with maple syrup - yay!!!!! I hear what some of the other people are saying, but the pro's here for me, way outway the con's, and in terms of the issues others have, they are getting it together one step at a time. Not perfect, but I love them! Their hearts and purpose are in the right place, much more so than any other place I know of in the East Bay. People like this need more of our support, I highly recommend checking them out, and supporting the local, organic, community cause! read more

The parking lot is difficult to navigate when busy, it's small. The food store is upscale is quality and price. Good selection. The eatery next door is expensive prepared food. My whole chicken cost $18 (the most I've ever paid for take out barbequed) and tasted as good as a $5.99 Safeway cooked chicken. Recommend for variety. read more

BUYER BEWARE- their rotisserie chickens are NOT gluten free. i was really disappointed to spend 15 bucks on a chicken only to come home, read the ingredients more carefully and see there are hops and barley in the chickens coating. i guess i should have read the ingredient list more carefully but i had assumed a rotisserie chicken from a natural grocery store would be gluten free. I just don't trust their prepared foods anymore. I'm now i'm out a chicken i can't even eat. read more

This place is as good as it gets! The staff is super awesome, the space is clean and comfy, and the food is ALL organic and super delicious! We are never disappointed. We feel like it's the only place nearby we can actually get edible food. If I could give this place 6+ stars I absolutely would! read more
