More recently started coming to the Castro location. I'm used to the SoMa one on Howard, and this location is 3-4x bigger! It is located on Market Street, right across from the Safeway. There are usually open spots on the block out front. They have machines to pay, and I always do, though I've heard they mostly check in the AM. This location is open, bright, and has a wide variety of products! They're sorted by ingestibles, vapes, and have a big flower bar at the back where you can talk with someone in-depth about the herb selection. They have various displays throughout that are sponsored by the different brands they sell. They even occasionally have live demos, where people from the brands come to offer samples, information, and discounts on their products. There are always weekly specials, so make sure to check those out to try and save some money! Each time I've come in here, the staff has been friendly, engaging, and helpful. They are well-trained, and knowledgeable about the different products and brands. If you have questions, or need recommendations for a specific brand or strain, just ask! If you're new to Cannabis, you can just tell them the feeling you want (sleepy, energy, focus), and how you want it (eat, drink, vape, smoke, etc). I took an easy stroll to this dispensary after finding them on Instagram. There's outdoor signage and a big logo in the window so it's pretty easy to find. The decor inside was trendy chic, with some rich jewel tones and golds. Once you check in there's plenty of merchandise to browse and the staff is great at helping you sort through options. Came to this bar with friends when it was still "early" (if 10:30pm is early in your books) and it was quiet and decent. Within an hour the bar filled up and it was no longer "quiet". It was definitely challenging to talk but if you're not at a bar to talk and you just want to drink, then it's perfect. The espresso martini was delicious. Could drink them all night. I've come with two local friends over two separate occasions. As other Yelpers have mentioned, there seems to be a difference in service and experience based on how busy the store is. Furthermore, the guy my friend was working with during my most recent time in August mentioned that new regulations around packaging was causing a shortage of many items throughout the city. Despite these challenges, this location excels in making information clear and accessible to all types of audiences. Their menu is clear, but really talking with folks is very illuminating. I've been a LONG TIME customer of Apothecarium. This store is the absolute worst with making good on their delivery windows. First, their app barely works when it comes to being notified whether your order is en route or not (showing "Packing" instead for bulk of your delivery time. Second, if you ever call and ask what's up with your driver being late, you're usually lied to and told that "you're up next". Every one of the past 7 orders I've made have been including tonight's being the last has been late. For the record, I called an hour ago and was told "I was next". My order is now once again 28 mins late after the two hour window has gone by. Props to the SOMA location for at least getting delivery times right. This location unfortunately has caused me to go to another provider. read more

Please know that because of the friendly, caring, and knowledgeable staff, I would usually give Castro Apothecarium a 5-star review. I have been a loyal customer for many years. However, there seems to be a new business model that concerns me, especially on behalf of the safety of the staff, who again makes the Apothecarium experience amazing. Rather than visiting the "bar" and consulting with a staff member to make purchases based on what I was looking for, it is now set up as a more traditional "retail store" with maybe one or two employees. I preferred having a conversation with a knowledgeable person who I've built great relationships with and trust their expertise. I felt more appreciated as a client with a 1:1 consultant rather than the present experience, which is a shopper (if that makes sense). The prices haven't changed, but the level of service you get is much lower by design. Plus, with so much inventory out on the floor, I am concerned for the safety of the singular staffer should there be a break-in/robbery. With the other dispensaries in the area, I feel like the customer experience has dropped off. Please bring back your knowledgeable, kind, and professional staff with the prior business model, wherein I can also choose to tip them for their outstanding service. read more

It's like Tartine Bakery - great products but be prepared to wait needlessly and for too long. It's like they plan their shifts to ensure a 15 minute wait. When the store is almost empty, there's one person helping the five customers. Prices are high, too, paying for the uselessly huge shop (and amazingly, you'll have to line up outside on Market Street most of the time, just to get into the waiting room. I get that reception is legally required, but you won't have to stand around outside at any of the numerous dispensaries in the area. I keep going back to try, and they keep sucking. I said the products are great like Tartine, and I mean it. But unlike Tartine, this is a retail establishment, and the same, awesome products can be had anywhere, such as the three amazing dispensaries within a quick, pleasant walk from this place: Flore, Eureka Sky, and Love Shack. Apothecarium is also a chain, not a nice little local business like the others I have mentioned. I've seen their ads on billboards in Las friggin Vegas. read more

Been here once when I was visiting SF. They have a wide variety of selections from edibles to smoke up pre rolled joints. I loved the experience of mine where I was greeted by a pretty lady who took all my information and asked me to fill out a form to get sign up. And then my name was called we went to the counter the lady was super helpful she guided us and recommended different things based on our questions. I tried their a cookie and a pre rolled joint and costed me a total of 12$. I was stoned like super buzzed for 4-6 hrs. It was an experience. I think the space that now houses Apothecarium was a club/restaurant I used to drink in many moons ago. Sort of echoing a club atmosphere, the pot shop is fairly large and kinda snazzy. I don't mind the check-in process--you present your ID, then take a seat and wait to be called by name. I dislike crowds, so I've learned to avoid the place later in the afternoon on Fridays and entirely on the weekends. No matter how many times you visit, the person you're to buy product from walks you over to your spot at the bar, opens the menu, then walks around to the other side of the bar to meet with you across the counter. This is great if you're new, needing to peruse the menu yet again, have a ton of time/questions or don't mind standing for minutes on end. Staff are generally good and pleasant to exchange a few words with over a transaction. I have had the occasional doobie rip-eyed (I'm showing my age with that expression) worker, but that's a rarity, fortunately. *street parking is scant *accessible via Market St. streetcar, J-Church and various other Muni trains that run through Church St. station read more

Gave this place another chance, big mistake. The old location really had a boutique feel to it. This new location is too large, weirdly organized, and has cheap window stickers all over the front windows of the store. After calling ahead an order to pick up, I walked into the store to find four employees helping one customer. Then one barked at me to wait outside. Really? You can't help more than one person? Also, staff are not always wearing their masks properly (chin straps). This place is more expensive than other dispensaries in the city, so to get treated so poorly and to have staff not follow health and safety guidelines is really disappointing. I don't even recognize this place anymore. All of their bud was below 26% and they're charging $77 for that. Single pre rolls were 17$ plus taxes. No concentrates above 80% thc, didn't even look at the prices. Came in to buy a pen battery, an accessory which has no cannabis in it. The total was 24.96, which shows me it's 20$ but they're charging the full cannabis excise tax... for an item which has no cannabis in it. Hope you're giving that extra 3 and change to the BCC. And on top of that, a $3 debit transaction fee. We didn't buy the cannabis excised battery. read more

It was very surprising how organized and professional they were! I have never been to a place like this, it was modern, very cozy and eclectic, the person that helped us was very informative, asking question of what we wanted, why, when, examples to show us exactly what would work for us and what effects it would give us. To commemorate the legal use of RECREATIONAL MJ in CA, I was here! On this special day, the Apothecarium first opened their doors for the life-event. It was glorious! Except for all the news cameras all over the place that day. I didn't need them all up in my business. As expected, I knew I would be in line for a long time; I think everyone knew that; but most of us were in good spirits and making new friends as we engaged in friendly conversations with one another. It helped time go by pleasantly. When I finally made it inside, I found the place to be chic and modern. In other words, BOURGIE. But they know good music with all my 80s jams they were playing! Making it passed the doors was the half way point with about another hour ahead of me, but all was good as were the vibes. Dispensaries are new to me as they are a little ahead of my time. Back in my day I knew of rolling blunts and hitting bongs and pipes. Pens and oils as another method are pretty cool; I'm learning these things from my friends of younger generations (No, I am not that old. Just ignorant. ) To frequent this establishment in the future is still unclear. However, I trust this is an excellent place to buy from; It feels safe. My sincerest apologies to the medical users, many seem to feel their home is being taken away from them now that the doors are opened to recreational users. I think you all deserve priority over everyone else. The staff here are a delight to deal with and they helped me to make the right purchases. I felt painful tingling up and down my body. It felt like I was being electrocuted. It lasted for hours and needless to say wasn't fun. Realizing that if that was what the CBD gummies were like I had no trust in the higher THC ones I went to return them today where I was told that they have a no return policy. Mind you I didn't try and return the opened pack I tried to return the still sealed pack. The only solution provided to me was to give me a 20% discount off something else. NO cash return just a credit to my account. When the girl could tell I was getting agitated she raised the discount to 50%. OK let me get this straight. I bring in an UNOPENED item with the receipt, tell you I had a bad reaction to a similar product from the same brand and instead of getting my money back you expect me to SPEND MORE AT YOUR STORE. Driving through SF on our way to Napa and needed to find a place open on a Sunday after 8pm, and this place was a gem! As soon as we were buzzed in. Such a classy spot! I'm not much of a connoisseur of marijuana, but when it's legal and a few steps from where you're staying ... it seems a shame not to visit. Lots of reviews said that the service was very slow, but that wasn't my experience. I waited less than 10 minutes to meet with my personal consultant. When I shared my inexperience with the product and described my goals, she immediately routed me to the products that made the most sense. There was no attempt to upsell or otherwise misdirect me, and that was a nice feeling!
