We both agreed that The Asylum was our favorite of the 3 pubs that we visited in Ketchikan during the pub crawl. It's well known for their specialty Duck Fart shots, but it's really the owners that make it so special. We were greeted warmly by Carlos. He made this visit so much fun. Honestly, I would have loved to stay longer to sample some of the local beers. They have many craft beers on tap. I just couldn't pass up the Booty Juice cocktail. It's strong & unique. I think he said it was a local huckleberry vodka, but I could be wrong. The best part was the Duck Fart shot. Don't go by the recipe because he actually makes it a little different. I won't spoil it for you. Not all Duck Farts are created equal. Haha! My husband won a t-shirt with the pub logo. Yes, our group played a trivia game. The owner admittedly has no filter. That's really what made the whole experience such a blast. Unfortunately, it was our first stop so we had to move on. I'd definitely revisit this one again in the future. read more

I have never met in my whole life a bartender that was so rude and so dismissive and so horrid in my whole life until I got to this place. Fortunately, the beer and the fish and chips was amazing. How this bar keeps this woman on is beyond me. If anyone wants to know who she is, I heard her say, she designed the hats that they sell. I don't know her name. It's such a shame, because the whole bar ambience was just fine. I'm on a cruise ship and it was just disappointing to be treated the way that my boyfriend and I were treated. It's quiet upstairs but gotta get your drink and food and take it up there. No one checks on you. Dogs allowed inside. Poor service. Drinks alright unless you're a beer drinker. I wasn't too impressed to be honest. Even got Burger Queen and it wasn't that good. Burnt onion rings and barely any BBQ sauce on my burger. read more

The Asylum is an awesome way to embed yourself in the landscape while enjoying a cold one. Or two. Or more. The back area of the building is carved into the side of the mountain. When the weather is nice, sit outside and stay a while. There's a lot more room here than it first appears from the outside. Drink prices are reasonable. Besides a full bar, they have a nice compliment of beers, including Alaskan beers (of course). As much as it hits all the notes of a bar, what sets it apart is the personality of the staff, particularly the owner. The man never stopped moving, setting up chairs, filling drinks, replacing souvenir shirts for my pain in the ass family who couldn't make up their mind about the design and size. And yet, he kept a sense of humor throughout. Everyone else was cheerful with a lot of "no problem" and "thank you honey". I wish we had more time here, but this will definitely be a place to stop through town. read more

Stopped in based on a strong recommendation from a local at another establishment. Sat outside (nice space given the weather). Asked about the burger special that we heard about, and was advertised on the door, but we were told by the bartender (quite rudely) that it was for locals only and didn't apply to 'tourists.' However, you can go next door and order a burger and bring it to the bar. The bartender even has a menu for the burger stand next door. There are 2 levels of seating, and also a patio. First time in Ketchikan, actually Alaska, with an hour to kill before our cruise excursion. To celebrate, we thought we'd take a walk to a bar for breakfast (; Stumbling into The Asylum, we were greeted by an energetic gentleman by the name of Carlos. The vibe is pretty divey, but with enough Alaska memorabilia and a view of the water/cruise ships. Carlos welcomed us in, and gave us a few tasters of Alaska's finest beers. My girlfriend settled on the blonde ale, and I went with the Amber ale. Both were crisp and refreshing just like the cloudy foggy weather. As a welcome to Alaska treat, Carlos prepared a trio of Duck Fart Shots for us. The recipe is an Alaskan secret, but boy is it a nice treat. this hidden gem is frickin AWESOME. if you're not looking for it, you might miss it, so I'd def google maps it out. the beer prices are unbelievable--$3.50 for a heavy pour--and there are so many beers on draft to choose from! the vibe is extremely casual - the owner (?) treats you like family. I love the sassy decor thrown around everywhere. The halibut and chips were the best fish and chips I've ever had and I truly don't know when I'll stop thinking about them. Definitely a great little bar literally across the street from the cruise docks...outside of our 3 hour kayak excursion we spent the entire day here... Carlos the owner was a great host and personally took care of us ...He's a huge Buffalo Bills fan like my buddy so they became buddies pretty quick ..even exchanged shirts..lol.. we sat outside on the patio...the weather was perfect and we could see our ship so no worries as to getting back on time...we look forward to getting back to Ketchikan for a land trip and hitting the Asylum again! He wasn't serving food that Sundaybut we could bring food in or have it delivered. Be prepared for him to scream at the Bills whether winning or losing. lol. We were lucky to be here drinking beer (blueberry! so good) and Cider (also fabulous) when a pub crawl came though and we got to hear the owner tell the funniest stories- he's quite a showman. And apparently has the busiest bar in Alaska! We heard all about the duck farts- must try one next time I am in town. We bought the shirts- and are going to wear them to the bar when we go again (in August! Can't wait!) This is just a super fun place and it's close to your cruise ship. read more

The location is right off a busy sidewalk but it is walled in with an open doorway, so it's a great place to people-watch while relaxing away from the crowds.
