Bad from start to finish. Ordered calamari as an appetizer than wasn't flash fried well and took some real work to chew through the rubber. Ordered the pot pie along with several other people at my table. Looked fantastic at first but as we dug in, every single one of them was very cold on the inside. Not a big fan of the fact they pre make these and freeze them from who knows when. Sent it back in exchange for a crab cake, that was tougher and chewier than a leather boot. What a fun little Irish pub! Located in the Marriott Whippany hotel lobby, this restaurant and bar has some real Irish flavor, and I'm not just talking about the Guinness. It's decorated to look like the basement of a castle, with rock walls and barrels of beer and whiskey all around. The atmosphere is casual and fun, and it was very busy (but not too crowded). The drinks were reasonably priced, and they have free refills for anyone who orders soda (since you need a designated driver in Jersey if you're not staying at the hotel). They have an extensive menu, including burgers, soups, and my favorite: potato skins. read more

Wandering around looking for a bar/restaurant and this place popped up. What a surprise when we finally figured out it wasn't closed, but was actually inside the non-descript Marriott. (In fact the interior of the hotel is a surprise, when judging it from the outside). For a hotel bar, it nails the vibe perfectly and thus an extra star. We were only in here for a drink and a quick bite so can't really speak to the rest of the food, but the small bites like calamari and flat bread were what you'd expect for bar food. Back for dinner another time. I forgot about my first roasted beet salad experience and ordered it again. It was excellent this time! Fresh, generous amounts of beets, fennel, mandarin oranges and goat cheese. Nice dressing which I ordered on the side. My husband loved his steak sandwich and mother-in-law on really enjoyed a beautiful chicken pot pie. We came to hear our friend play live music which was the real draw but dinner was an excellent treat too! Visited here Saturday night for a date and was definitely given the best seat in the house (booth) by the great hostess. Food was ok. Arugula salad was dressed lightly I had asked for dressing on the side)....but it was ok. Fish was ok (nattered cod) fries were good needed salt. The drinks were pretty good, and the apps were your standard bar apps. What stood out the most was the nachos. Yummy big serving with generous amounts of chips, guac, and jalapenos. This had to be the coolest Irish pub I've been to in awhile and it's located in one of the most unsuspecting place's you'll find. The Marriott, located on Route 10 in Whippany, is a rather classy joint (at least the lobby had me impressed) and unless you've stayed at the hotel or a friend has told you about this place, you'd never know it's there. I've been told everything in the pub is authentic and it sure looked it. It wasn't too crowded at lunch time and we had no trouble getting a table. Service was quick and the staff was very attentive to our needs. My friend and I opted for the Reuben and what a great choice it was. Can you say awesome???? The corned beef was lean and moist and plenty of fries on the side. I didn't leave hungry that's for sure. By the looks of it, I suspect it's a fun place to hang for Happy Hour or in the fall for football games. Any time of the day or week would be a good time to stop on by so give it a try! read more

Went to this place after a convention across the highway. Was a little nervous doing a hotel version of an Irish pub, but everything was great. The food was perfect, the decor very nice, and friendly staff... only downside is that the prices were a little high due to it being in the hotel, but not too much. Definitely worth it read more

Like this place. We've been here at least 10 times and have never had a bad experience. The food sometimes doesn't live up to the price-but I've more often than not I've had a restaurant .com coupon-so it makes it reasonable. I can't complain about that. Service is usually good and their steaks are awesome. However, when you order wine, (house) they usually fail to tell you that they have two different sizes. Almost 13.00 for the higher ounce. Again, HOUSE? If you have two glasses that is $26.00! WAYYYYY too much for house. So be sure to ask. Salads are great, Salmon is good, not great and calamari is usually over fried and a bit chewy but, I LOVE the balsamic sauce. Steaks like I said are great. 16-0z rib eye is exactly what it says. The most expensive thing on the menu-but it's usually what I order. HUGE. Burgers are great, Quesadillas appetizer, though not Irish are wonderful, Chicken Wings are good as are the Rosemary grilled shrimp. Will be back. Ahhh, The Auld Shebeen...good beer, slow bartenders and terrible food. It's located inside the Marriott off Route 10. It's tight quarters at the bar and average dining space. Happy Hour favorite of my old company. Went recently I remembered why I didn't like this place. Yeah the ambiance and look of the place is nice once inside but that's were all the good things stop. The bartenders aren't very friendly and super slow (even if it wasn't even busy), the food is subpar (typical Irish fare mixed with continental) and the beers were the only saving grace. I am usually am reluctant to give a hotel bar a 4 or better. This one deserved it. We drank and ate a the bar. The bartenders including Mike were forth coming friendly and excellent servers. I had a tanqueray martini which was well done, not perfect but very good. I later enjoyed a Victory Festale. It was a very good Octoberfest style ale. Nice hop and with a good malt balance with a slightly sweet finish . Dinner. The pretzel app was tender buttery pretzel with two excellent dips. The little salad had a nice mix of greens, simple veggies and a nice balsamic vinaigrette. And it was not ice cold thankfully . The chicken steak sandwich with Irish cheddar was very good. A nice twist on the Philly steak concept. I like this because it was not incredibly gooey and the Irish cheddar instead of the indescript cheese like substance on a Philly cheese steak was refreshing . The sweet potato fries were thin fries done pretty well, and they so often are either a soggy mess or burned. The really good English malt vinegar complimented these well. The wife had the grilled cheese which looked good and she said was quite tasty. Apparently I was not offered a bite. The steak fries that came with that were also really good . Someone in the kitchen understands the fryer. Service was first rate. Perhaps the food came out a little too fast . Not much true Irish on the menu. Bangers and mash if the are truly Irish sausages . However they did source butter and cheese from Kerrigold. There was a salmon dish which is certainly an Irish component and a short rib which may not be traditional certainly becoming more common in county Cork. We enjoyed our dinner very much . read more

Nice looking place. It is furnished with many items from Ireland. Someone told me they relocated an entire a bar( I don't know if that is correct). The food is good. The staff is friendly. The Guinness is served cold. This is forgivable in a normal bar, but not in a "Irish" bar. If your not careful they will pour it in a chilled glass. read more

Stopped in for lunch and was really drawn to the ambiance of the place. Truly felt transported to an irish pub, minus the cheesy halloween decorations. My co-worker told me that a signifigant portion of the bar was imported straight from Ireland, so kudos for the authenticity. We sat at the bar as we only had about 45 minutes and we're greeted warmly by the bar tender who quickly took our drink orders and gave us a few menus. The lunch menu is quite large with plenty of options for everyone. My friend was pretty bummd they did have as she said "the best fucking chicken fingers in the WORLD" anymore so she settled on the cobb salad which was packed with bacon, egg, and cheese. I opted for a portabello mushroom paniini with goat cheese and spinich which was delicious. Home made chips were a nice touch and even stayed crunchy after a night in the office fridge. Bit expensive but consider it a fancy lunch spot. I'll be back but i recomend sitting at the bar if you need to be in and out. read more

I have visited the Auld Shebeen on a number of occasions.... two of which stand out to me the most. The first was on St. Patrick's Day and this bar was insane! We actually went there looking for a quiet place to have a few drinks and celebrate our Irish blood..... however, it was packed! Wall to wall people.... and live Irish music. It actually turned out to be a really fun night! The second time was actually my wedding day. We decided to use the Marriott for all of our overnight guests, so after the reception we continued the celebration down at the Auld Shebeen. It was a lot less crowded and I actually got to get a good look at the place. It is really cute inside..... you feel like you are inside an old Irish castle. Maybe the woodwork is authentically Irish... I don't even know where to start about this pub. I moved to the area 2 months ago from Chicago, where we have some of the world's best Irish pubs. I've now been here a third time with colleagues from work. Apparently, my company has quite a few groups at this venue, being close to our campus. Food - absolutely awful, uninspired, lackluster. The menu looks as if it was put together by someone who knows nothing about Irish food, and the non-Irish offerings are weak. After three meals here I thought I'd seen enough (read below under "lowlight"). Most fast-casual restaurants offer better food quality, and more authenticity to whatever their theme might be. NEVER AGAIN. Bar - Well-stocked, good tap beer selections. Management - Hostess was MIA for at least ten minutes. My group was "acknowledged" by someone named Joe, who was, I was told, a senior manager of some kind at the hotel. The man's demeanor just reeked of insincerity and self-importance. Obviously, well past his prime in this business. Venue - Untidy to downright dirty in some spots. Highlights - Yes. Two. Chin(?) the bartender, and Jenn(?) the server. Lowlight - Someone tell the chef (dark hair, skinny, big nose) to wash his hands after using the rest room... disgusting. The Verdict - Come here for the bar, mind your own business, and for god's sake don't eat anything. read more

I stayed at the Marriott for an event and I found myself eating in this restaurant at least 4 times. The salads were cold and crisp, the turkey club was one of the best I have ever had, and the homemade potato chips are NOT to be missed (mmmm)!! Hostesses were helpful and friendly. Service with a smile. I would definitely go back. People sitting at the table next to me were locals who said how much they also love coming here. So I stayed in the Hanover Marriott for a month while on business. I had done my research of the area and had planned on going to all sorts of different places to eat. HAHAHAH yeah that didn't happen much. Anyway, the auld shebeen was good. Mostly everything I had was decent. The one thing I can say I didn't enjoy was the cowboy ribeye. It looked delicious when other people were ordering it so I did too. Yeah mine was over cooked and over seasoned. The potato soup is amazing, burgers are good. Service is good. Everything hit the spot after a LONG workday far from home. Oh and even though technically room service isn't from there, it really was, room service was bomb too. Especially when you wanna eat food but don't wanna act like a human in front of coworkers... Or anyone really. LOL read more

Stayed here on business and had dinner twice because it was convenient. Service was friendly and attentive but the food really misses the mark... First night I tried the turkey burger and the meat looked/tasted like processed microwaved mystery meat. It also made my stomach turn later that night and I didn't even finish the meal. The salad part was good though. Second night I had the fish and chips, which was really chips and a side of fish. This time I left over half my meal uneaten... Mostly ate the fish part. I couldn't eat more even though I was still hungry. Thankfully I had some apple chips in my room. I think I'll stick to salads if I have to stay here again. read more

The Auld Shebeen has pretty good food, but woeful service. I didn't catch the name of our server, but we ended up being seated near the bar, and our ticket was apparently labeled as such. When our food came out, it was wordlessly dropped in front of us, and a request to have more to drink was ignored. Fine, I thought, it's loud in here tonight, there's a convention going on, maybe they didn't hear me and they needed to pick up the pace anyway. The next time I saw our server, I made eye contact and waved her over. She stopped, turned to us and said "-What- do -you- need?" in a rather snide tone. I was taken aback, but requested a refill of our drinks, which she wordlessly complied with. We spent the rest of our time there wondering what we'd done to offend her or if we'd stumbled into one of those gag restaurants where the staff is rude as a show. To her credit, she did explain the situation with our ticket being associated with the bar and not with her, but that doesn't excuse that kind of behaviour. She apologized for it working out that way, but not for her snapping at us. Really, this is more of a problem with the culture of gratuities than anything. It doesn't incentivize wait staff to perform better - It just disincentivizes them from making any effort to tend to guests who aren't "theirs". read more

To keep it short that went there yesterday with my wife for lunch. We have calamari as an appetizer so chevy one of the worst I had in my life. Then i had fish and chips, fish was way too mushy'I did not enjoy it at all. My wife had a Celtic pie , which was okay. service wasn't I'm pressive. They have a great beer selection, including two Octoberfest beers, a quad and a barley wine, too! Got the big pretzels with a very tasty cheese sauce, a burger and a beef dip sandwich - all were really good. If you're looking at hotel restaurants the Auld Shebeen is pretty much at the top of its game. Fantastic food, moody, dark and gorgeous decor crafted from stone, reclaimed wood and antiques from Ireland. Beautiful. The Auld Shebeen sits comfortably in the lobby of the Hanover Marriott (a hotel vaguely reminiscent of an Apple store). It's really a looker, and the lighting really gives it rich atmosphere. But restaurants wouldn't be anything if not for the food, and atmosphere only goes so far. Thankfully that's where the Auld Shebeen shines. The Celtic Wings are massive, flavorful and spiced just about right (I'm not a fan of hot wings, but they had just the right amount of heat). Their turkey burger is amongst the best I've ever had, and the Shepherd's Pie? Hot damn. The Reuben is pretty good, too. The real winner on the menu: the potato soup. It's thick, bacony and has just the right amount of soup to make it the perfect appetizer. The perfect ratio of food and flavor to stave off your hunger without ruining your meal. And it's a pretty good dipper for fries, too. I'm sure there's a potato on potato joke in there somewhere, but I'm too tired to write it. My only complaint? Service can be a little slow at times. Refills can be a bit hard to come by, the orders can take a bit to go through (even when the restaurant is somewhat empty). Despite that, the food is good -- really good. I'm not usually a fan of hotel restaurants because of how of the general price/quality ratio, but the Auld Shebeen is well priced for the quality and convenience If service were better I'd consider consider giving it 5/5. read more

Located in the Hanover Mariott is this authentic Irish pub. I have been here on numerous occasions and my last visit I sat at a table near the bar. The server who took care of me was also the bar tender. He did a great job making sure that I had everything and had a nice personality. I have to say i was slightly disappointed though with my fish and chips. The fish was overcooked and not nearly as good as I have had there in the past. My kid had chicken fingers and there was no complaints from his side of the table. read more

As far as hotel restaurants go, The Auld Shebeen is probably one of my favorites. Sure, it's a bit pricey, but that's to be expected of any hotel restaurant. Honestly? This one isn't nearly as expensive as some I've dined at. Right off the lobby of the Marriott is this little gem, and it just oozes "Irish" vibes. The interior is covered in reclaimed wood from Ireland and there's very folk-ish art on the walls, but not so much that it turns into a TGI Fridays. As to be expected from any pub, there's a good selection of beers on tap, including quite a few local microbrews. Booze and atmosphere aside, the food is actually quite nice - a personal favorite of mine being the potato soup, which was perfectly balanced and could have stood on its own as a meal. The reuben sandwich I had was also excellent (and fairly large), with perfectly crisped bread and fries to boot. A bonus is that they have malt vinegar on the tables to drench your fries in, something that I really appreciate. The bad? As others have mentioned, service is hit or miss. There's been times I've gone here and gotten my food / refills nearly instantly, and other times where I've just sat in an empty restaurant wondering if every server had just gone home for the day. As mentioned earlier, prepare to pay "hotel prices" for everything - the potato soup alone costs $8, and most sandwiches are over $13. Food quality is generally high however, and portions are generous, so it does help to offset the price quite a bit, making it almost a non-issue. Overall a great little pub, and one that I'd consider dining at even if I wasn't staying in the attached hotel. read more

Hotel restaurants tend to be overpriced, under-maintained, and have surly staff that are unwilling to go the extra foot-and-a-half to make sure all is well. The Auld Shebeen is none of these, and is one of those places that I'd be happy to return to, if I lived close enough! The pub does a good job recreating the Irish pub atmosphere that you'd find anywhere in Dublin, with wooden pillars and tables, it feels right. The food is superb. I've had the pleasure of being here several times and having many of their offerings, from their unusually delicious buffalo wings to their shepard's pie. It's all VERY delicious. A personal favorite is the Three Little Pigs, three pulled pork sandwiches with your choice of side. The meat is flavorful and the toppings accompany the sandwich perfectly. The service ... can sometimes be something that needs to be worked on, and is the only thing that holds me from giving them that coveted 5th star. Especially during the dinner hours, it can be difficult to get the attention of a server or bartender, which means longer wait times and sometimes frustrated patrons, but the food is still that shining star that keeps me coming back. In summary: Great food, good atmosphere. Service seems to be better at lunch than at night. read more

I've made a few stops here and most of the food is good. The menu itself is very diverse, including things like a Cubano and BBQ pork sandwich in addition to the more traditional Irish items. The short rib is great. The only item is pass on is the fish and chips, as the breading on the fish is a bit strange and doesn't stick to meat. As others have said, the atmosphere is great and staff very friendly. It can get a little noisy at night, but it is definitely a place to go. The location itself is impressive, stonework, large wooden bar, really charming. Being a veteran of the restaurant industry certain things really really annoy me. The big one, an empty hostess stand; which is exactly what we saw on Saturday night. Not even a server wandered near the entrance. So, I ventured to the bar to see if someone was hanging around there to help us. Nope, and the bartenders never turned from the computer screen to see me standing there. Someone showed up and took us to our table. Our server was nice enough, if a bit clueless. I ordered a turkey burger, which was supposed to come with chipotle aioli, avocado and the usual lettuce, tomato and onions. I asked "no aioli." He then asked me, "no avocado?' Avocado is fine, no mayo/sauce /whatever you want to call it. What I received was a beyond dry turkey burger, with no aioli and no avocado. When I asked about avocado, the server came back at me, telling me what I had asked for and what I had was what i requested. Pet Peeve Number 2: I'm the customer, I might not always be right, but don't disagree with me. Especially when it's sliced avocado, not the difference between Rare and Well Done.Just apologize and correct it. I'd give it another shot and stick to something less complicated. read more

I was really close to give this place a 4-star on our first visit. Unfortunately, one waiter ruined it! Our first visit gets a 4-star: We just arrived to the hotel and we were extremely hungry. We noticed this pub right off the bat walking in. We dropped of our stuff in the room and ran down. This place is so nicely decorated. Love all the wood around. We went straight to the bar and sat down to order. The bartender- wish I could remember her name. She was so friendly and outgoing! She welcomed us and took our order right away. She let me sample a few white wines so I could choose which I liked best. There are complementary pretzels with mustard sauce. So yummy. My boyfriend and I wanted something easy and quick so we ordered BYO Burger which comes with Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion in a Brioche Bun. We added cheddar cheese and bacon. Not even 5-10 minutes later our order was in front of us. It was so delicious and perfectly made. We could not have asked for more. I was so happy that I could see myself coming here quite often while I stayed at the Marriott. Our second visit (rude waiter)- I give you 1 star! Just coming back from church for a wedding we are again starving. We wanted to order a few appetizers and drinks. We walked in and we were immediately greeted and the host asked us if we wanted a table or go to the bar. Since the bar looked full. We said we would like to order "some appetizers" and drinks. So she sat us down at a table. (only the bar was full. plenty of tables are empty). Once the waiter heard "appetizers" she went up the hostess after we were seated and told her "they want appetizers, they can just go to the bar. I don't have time for this". Of course when I heard this I felt uncomfortable. The waiter then came to our table and took away our utensils and cloth napkin. She brought back a fork and small paper napkins. It was all done in a rude manner. I asked her for water and a glass of red wine. Then we placed our appetizer orders. Flash Fried Calamari - Sliced Cherry Peppers, Tomatoes, Balsamic Glaze, Harissa Aioli. & Celtic Wings with Carrot & Celery, Bleu Cheese. The appetizers were good. However, I am eating chicken wings with buffalo sauce! It is messy and the small paper napkins are not helping. So, I decided to take the cloth napkin with utensils from the empty table next to us. (while doing this I was hoping the waiter would not see me) To my surprise she was looking straight at me. She comes over right away and rudely places a new napkin and utensils on the empty table. It was just so uncomfortable. I was tense the whole time and wanted to leave. I wish we had experience a better service like the first time. This waiter needs to take so customer service courses.
