We had a wonderful daynat our event on Thursday and when we were done, I remembered this place from many moons ago. So my team and I went for a group dinner were we showed up around 7:30, and were seated within minutes. one round table in the back for 6! Outside a guitar player was singing and strumming to some favorite tunes. Nancy our server came over and took our drink and appetizer order and highly suggested the garlic bread! We ordered it covered in Mozzarella. So good and warm out of the oven! Then I went with the 1/2 wedge salad with the right amount of everything. Followed by the Ribeye with Arthur potatoes and a side of cream spinach and cole slaw. For dessert we had the home made Peanut butter pie smothered in chocolate. 13 years later and I don't even know where to begin as to how far this place has faller? Still same atmosphere, Michelle the waitress was an absolute treasure, bartenders staff all helpful and friendly, but MY GOD the food was for the most part AWFUL! The French onion soup was 100% delicious, although the soup itself was more on the lukewarm side rather than piping hot underneath the perfectly melted cheese. It is next where everything goes south. The "Delmonico" their long standing famous steak was hands down the worst cuts of meat in history. At least 8 ounces of waisted fat & grizzle to a tough flavorless piece of meat. The 'Famous" Arthurs potatoes tasted like they were sitting on a flat frill all day soaked in grease inedible. The real killer was the "FRENCH DIP" I have no words to describe the absolute disaster this sandwich was. Dry, chewy overcooked leftover roast beef from who knows where? It tasted like meat from a Swanson TV Dinner. The Au Jus was brown thin tasteless liquid. The side of coleslaw was so small it was not worth mentioning. Hardly any grizzle and not overly fatty. Rather it was crusty on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. Went on Thursday night for the first time! The whole experience was amazing. We were seated immediately and the waitress came instantly and welcomed us and took our drink order. Within minutes she returned with our drinks and took our order. We both had the half wedge and the infamous delmonico with Arther's potatoes. Again within minutes the wedges came. Obviously lettuce doesn't offer much in flavor however the dressing and added tomatoes, and cheese were outstanding. Just as we were finishing our wedges the steaks were delivered. The medium rare steaks were perfect with a nice char and we literally devoured them. It was a great first experience, the waitress was awesome and price was gentle on our wallets. For me it was a 5 star experience. We will definitely be returning soon. read more

This place was first built in 1917, and became known as Arthur's Tavern in 1957. The inside is very cool with its beautiful bar and tin roof. This past Tuesday was the first time I've been here in over 30 years and it really hasn't changed. On a Tuesday night in March, the place was packed! My stepson and I got a nice table right by the front window. In this setting, we had to start off with a Guinness! A hallmark of this place is the dish of pickles served when you sit down. Great touch! We ordered the pretzel appetizer which was small pretzels served with cheese and mustard. We both ordered steaks, I went with the Delmonico which was huge. We had exactly the meal we were hoping to have here. As I found out, it's somewhat of a local staple and that is for a good reason. We walked in at 5 PM on a Friday night and we were seated right away but beware if you go any later than 530 you might have to wait. I got the French onion soup in the fillet and my dad got the del monaco. The soup was great, but the steaks were insane. The fillet was very tender, but it locked the flavor that the Delmonico had. You have to get one of their special steaks if you go. I'm not knocking on my flight. It was one of the most tender flavors I've ever had. This was one of the best steaks, my dad or I have had out. Our server here was amazing. You can tell she's been working here for a while and loves it. We had such a wonderful, fun experience and a five star meal in a casual ambience. I love a good Irish pub and Arthur's is always a great choice. I've been coming with my family since I was a kid. The steaks are truly some of the best I've ever had. The 24oz Delmonico is their top seller and is always delicious. It comes with a side of potatoes (my absolute favorite!). Portion sizes are large and prices are fairly reasonable. On the menu, there are a few other steak options, burgers, etc. but the menu isn't super extensive. Most recently I got the New York Strip which was basically a smaller version of the Delmonico. They do run weekly specials including apps, entrees, and drink options. It gets super busy on the weekends so it's best to get there earlier. They also accept reservations. Plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs. It's a little quieter upstairs since the bar area is downstairs. The staff is very efficient as many of them have been working there for years. I have been a loyal customer at Arthur's for over 40 years and have only sent a steak back once in four decades. However, my dining experience last night was easily one of the worst I've ever had, and I am deeply disappointed. Our party of five sat down for dinner, and three people ordered the steak special, which was advertised with mashed potatoes and asparagus. When we asked to substitute creamed spinach for the asparagus, we were told no substitutions were allowed. We accepted this and paid extra for sides of creamed spinach, as well as mushrooms and gravy for the mashed potatoes. Every steak at the table was ordered rare. When the food arrived, not a single steak was rare, and the specials came out with sliced potatoes instead of mashed. When we brought this up to our waitress, she nonchalantly informed us that they had run out of mashed potatoes two hours prior. If she had been transparent from the start, those in our party who ordered the special specifically for the mashed potatoes would have chosen something else. It is infuriating that customers are denied substitutions, yet the kitchen feels entitled to substitute items on our plates without notice. Two of us sent our overcooked steaks back to be remade rare, and we requested to speak with the manager. When he arrived at the table, he admitted he was completely unaware the kitchen was out of mashed potatoes. While he was standing there, our remade steaks were served. I cut into mine right in front of him: it was seared on the outside and completely raw in the middle. I asked him directly, "Would you eat this?" He was speechless. We paid our bar tab and left immediately. After 40 years of patronage, I will not be returning. This is a disgraceful way to treat a long-time customer--or anyone walking through your doors. The worst part about it was the management seemed as if he couldn't care less about our dinner experience. read more

While the Farmer's Onion Soup is still the best around, I thought our server was kind of rude and my Seafood Combo dinner was a miss - crabcake was falling apart and different temperatures; shrimp were way overcooked and salmon was undercooked. Okay, so this one is a tough review for me, let me explain. Having lived in Morris Plains for 20+ years and my dining companions 30+ years, it may seem odd, but we had never been to Arthur's for dinner. The biggest draw back, for me anyway, is that everyone complains about the noise level. Having been there this past Sunday, we figured it would be slower and more quiet at the end of a three-day holiday weekend, and it was. Whew. We ordered a few drinks, as well as the pork chop, a filet mignon (asked to be butterflied and cooked well) and a burger and the waitress was super-friendly, even before we told her that this was our first time. Drinks came right on time, and were good. Nothing to complain about. We're chatting at the table and a gentleman from the kitchen (Eric) came to our table with a piece of paper. He stood between us and the table next to us and in a louder than expected voice told us that we ordered a steak butterflied and that's noting something you are supposed to ask for here, and told us as an exception, they would do it, but would not honor this request again. I actually thought he might be joking at first, but he wasn't. We all looked at each other and around the dining room and menu to see if a request was a no-no, but nothing. I'm seething at this point. Why would you come out of the kitchen to embarrass us like that? It not like we asked for anything out of the ordinary here, if it were a huge problem, just bring the raw steak out, and I'll cut the thing nearly in half and then you can throw it on the grill. We were told by the waitress that "they don't do things like that here", to which I said "do things to make diner happy?" Can you imagine Ruth's Chris, Cap Grille, Rod's or any other restaurant that specializes in beef telling you that they won't do something like butterfly a steak? It really did ruin our evening, simply because we did not ask for anything out of the ordinary, unless you're at Arthur's, where they will go out of their way to make you feel like a fool. Honestly, it would have taken a fraction of the time he took for him to confront us, than it would have to run a knife down a steak and call it a day. As we were walking back to the car, I happened to see Eric, the people pleasing machine working the kitchen at Arthur's, and confronted him. I told him how I felt about being treated this way, for a request that any other restaurant would have happily fulfilled. He did apologize and genuinely seemed to not realize our level of frustration by being chastised for a simple request in front of other diners in a town we lived in. Sadly, I really did enjoy my meal, it was cooked nicely and the chop was quite large. The rest of the table enjoyed their meals as well, but I don't think we'll be going back. We know full well that this review will have no impact on their business culture, the lines at the door tell me people are willing to just shut up and stay quiet, but a simple request should be honored and if not, PLEASE state so on the walls and/or menu. read more

I'm on my revenge tour of my old favorite haunts and tonite I found myself near Arthur's. My last visit here was over 25 years ago to celebrate the birthday of a deceased buddy. Stopped by for the first time in many years, went to the one in Hoboken, so wanted to try this one. They have no reservations - first come, first served and your party must be there as a whole group. Decor reminds you of a checkerboard red-white decor and an internal awning over the bar area. Seating first, second floors, and outside. Pickles & hot peppers for table appetizers for free - these are great and people were remarking on the peppers. Simple polyester table covers and knives and forks that don't cut so well. The appetizers - naked wings w/ buffalo was ok, hot temperature-wise but not crispy on the wings. The piled nachos were ok, could've used a bit more cheese. The garlic bread was too hard of a bottom but lots of cheese and garlic made up for that - very greasy though. The French onion soup was proclaimed as one of the best by one of my dining mates. Cowboy steak - ribeye with a bone, was ok - half the steak was well-marbled and done medium rare without issue, a little gristly but not too much fat. The other half, though was dry and tough, not well-marbled so I feel like the cut was off, or they overcooked the second half as overdone since it wasn't as thick. Disappointed there. Mashed potatoes with it were good, and the asparagus was boiled and not much flavor. A1 on the table if you needed it, side of mushrooms was very good, but salty. Overall, had better steak and apps, but the French Onion soup looked great and the top of the garlic bread and the mashed potatoes were solid.
