It was my first time so it was initially scary, but we ended up having so much fun and it was super stress relieving! Someone teaches you how to stand and throw and goes through several throws with you until you feel comfortable enough to throw on your own. For those who are scared about safety, they have fences around each target area and lines demarcating where to stand to throw. As long as I didn't throw excessively hard, the axe did not bounce back far enough to hit me or my friend. They offer military and student discounts, so we ended up paying $18.63 per person. I went to Axe Lair today (3/13) with a group of 9 people to celebrate a birthday. We booked and prepaid for a two hour time slot from 12-2 and was instructed by the confirmation email to arrive 20 minutes early. Our group arrived early, around 11:30 and the place was closed. We continued to wait for about an hour (30 mins past their opening hour) and still no sign of any employee. Other groups of people stared to show up as well and a few of them ended up taking off. Finally, after 40 minutes of standing outside of Axe Lair we see a small blue car speed into the driveway and a man jumps out to unlock the gate. He looked at the group of about 20 of us and didn't say much, just drove into the parking lot and parked his car. The 20 of us continued to wait outside what we assumed was the front door waiting for him to let us in. After a couple minutes we realized he wasn't coming for us and found our way inside. We walked inside and wasn't greeted by the man who was hurrying to open up the place. Finally I asked him what happened and why he was almost an hour late to work. A few other people chimed in asking about refunds and if the owner was around. He looked at his computer screen and refused to make eye contact with any of us and kept repeating "I got you. I got you". Someone else informed him that he was an hour late to which he relied "ok." One of the men in another group asked him where the owner was and all he said was "He's not here, he's on vacation." We asked him for his name and he said it was Sebastian. So, to the business owner who I know is going to read this, reconsider Sebastian's employment at your business. Not only is Sebastian an embarrassment to your business, but he severely lacks customer service skills. Not once did Sebastian apologize to any of us for being late, but he also continued to gave us attitude throughout our visit. Anytime I asked him for anything he acted like I was burdening him. Sebastian, a little common courtesy goes along way. A simple "sorry I'm late guys, I was held up with something/ I over slept/ I really don't do well with responsibilities (really any excuse would help here), and I'll make sure you're taken care of" would have soften the blow of your blatant disregard for other people's time. My wife found this place when searching for things to do on a much needed date night. It hides in a neighborhood-like setting (trust Siri) in a warehouse. The music (heavy metal) is appropriate for axe-throwing. This is NOT a paint by number while we sip on wine vibe. We were able to walk in without a reservation. Sign the waiver, drop $20 per person, and get a quick tutorial on 2-handed and 1-handed axe throwing. My wife and I took turns and we had a blast! They have axes. That's why they get two stars. I called to ask about reservations last night. I could not make the indicated reservations on the website (note that I'm not the first reviewer with the same issue). I was told that the second hour of my reservation would be blocked off and could be paid for when I got here. The person I spoke with neglected to tell me that when we got here, we would be extorted for more money. I expected to book two hours at a discounted rate as their website stated I could but wows not functionally prepared to accommodate. If I was told that I needed to pay the normal hourly rate last night, two things might have happened: I'd have just booked two separate hours online (duhh, and I might come back. Once we arrived, the tutorial was pretty quick, not that it needed to be any better than it was for a bunch of beginners like us. Other reviewers complained about that, but I certainly didn't expect a babysitter. When we started throwing the axes, our real mission was to make sure the axes went the right direction, and no one accidentally slit their wrists. Having accomplished that, we noticed that we could not play any of the games described in our little hand out because we couldn't see the delineation between the target lines. I looked around, and a lot of the lanes were like that. Instead of having the lame prepared for us (as in, can I see the bulls eye at all? No? New middle board, please...) we wasted part of our $200 (party of 4 was supposed to be $160) watching these people replace the center boards on two lanes splinter by splinter. I finally got my computer out (didn't want to leave it in the car) to work on a presentation. The same scenario repeated itself twice more while we were there in other lanes. I noticed that the degradation was less significant and the replacements went much more quickly. We were generously offered the adjacent lanes to throw, which were almost as bad. Our axes were insanely dull. If I were mugged in the parking lot outside the establishment, I might be able to hit someone over the head with the axes. I tried (REALLY TRIED) to cut my finger with the three axes provided us. I would have done more damage with a pencil. So I sent my husband to request sharpened axes. A woman barely sharpened the axes so that one was sharp in the spots where it wasn't nicked, and the other was just rolled as though it had been over sharpened on one side and barely sharpened on the other. If I sawed on my skin long enough one of the nicks would have caught, at least. An hour into our time, we had a recognizable bullseye and two "less dull" axes. I enjoyed spending time with my friends and husband, and I had fun trying something new. Getting taken for a ride pisses me off. I'm not coming back to upland for this. read more

Very cool place! I believe the owner's name was Jorge and he was very attentive. When you arrive you are given a quick tutorial by him on how to throw the axe and then you're on your own. I was in a party of 4, including myself, and we stayed there for an hour which I felt was just the right amount of time. The only issue we had was a purchase discrepancy. My boyfriend reserved our time slot and prepaid online. They charge $20 per person per hour. His subtotal online came out to $87 rather than $80. When we arrived, my boyfriend spoke with Jorge about the issue and he apologized for the price difference. My boyfriend was given money back and we were given free water bottles. Everyone in my party had a really good time. I was really nervous at first but became more relaxed the more I threw the axe. If you're not much into throwing they also have a huge version of Jenga and Connect Four to play. Really neat place. Definitely give it a try! read more

Walked in on a Saturday night, it was busy initially but time flew by since there was games to keep us entertained. We played connect four but there was also jenga on the other side. Once it was our turn, one of the staff members gave us a rundown on how to throw the axes. Once we got the groove of axe throwing, boy did we have some fun! So worth it! What a bummer this place turned out to be. Sebastian the supposed "manager" argued with us just now. Husband and I came a few weeks ago and you pay for the hour and you make reservations. They ended us 5 minutes early, whatever we didn't say anything last time since it was just the husband and I. Today we had pre paid reservations for 7pm, we showed up early and just like last time they told us to chill at the lounge and will call us when the lane opens up, I told my friend they started us late last time so I want to make sure we get the full hour since it was their first time throwing. We showed up on time, ordered a beer and sat and waited in their lounge as instructed. They started us late again today but today I told my friend they called us at 7:11 you pay for the hour so we have till 8:11....Sebastian comes at 8:00 and says we are done, my husband and I proceed to tell him that we got called at 7:11 so we have 11 more minutes. This "manager" argues with us about it! WTF!!!! My husband asks "so we pay for the hour so it's our fault that we came at 6:55pm and reservations at 7pm and you call us at 7:11 to begin, how the hell is that our fault?! "And what manager argues with us about that in front of all their other customers?! We live a minute walking distance and were excited to bring our friends and family to come throw some axe. It's not cheap to come here so we want our full hour and we don't want a "manager" arguing with us over something that is not our fault! Such bullshit.
