Black Russian Bagel
Robert S.

In a plaza in Colts Neck, you will find a bagel store with potential. Brand: 9/10 I do appreciate the cartoon bagel characters with the old-fashioned 1930s animation eyes painted on the glass walls. The interior has a standard appearance typical of bagel shops with glass storage containing bagels and delicacies. The entrance definitely has a presentable impact, for you will find stone tables on a platformed plaza cluttered with stone. The Bagel Store has been known to donate to the local community, though it is not really known for any kind of events. However, I do not know how long the establishment will have the name "The Bagel Store," since many businesses exist that have such a standard type of name. Ambiance: 8/10 The environment inside had a standard quality to it, though with some elements sticking out. The television did play in the background a bit intrusively and a fly roamed around the inside. It can get noisy as a tightly insulated space, but nothing too chaotic. As a small space, the Bagel Store accommodates as much as it can with the tables and chairs vaguely separated apart. There are also stone tables and seats outside in case you cannot find room inside. Service: 10/10 I did like the self-directed check-out with an option to pay cash or credit, and giving you the choice between have the receipt or not. The owner described the leadership of this establishment as a place where every employee is a leader within their own station. I can see how this plays out in the workplace, since the staff makes many menu items readily available while others are just getting prepared shortly before the near-noon rush. Wait Time: 10/10 We did not experience any interruptions for the wait time. Food: 8/10 I chose the Black Russian bagel packed with cream cheese, with orange juice. It was already prepared, since it was already behind the glass case. The bagel held its form with none of the cream cheese pouring out. It had an earthy smell, which fits. This bagel flavor is a new taste for me. I will say that the hardiness complements the cream cheese perfectly, as the contrast befits this meal. The aftertaste disappeared quickly. Worth The Money?: 8/10 The food represents the brand well, since its well-preserved nature ensures that you get a simple yet fulfilling meal. While the Black Russian bagel satisfied me, the noisy environment did outweigh it. I can see how the brand will evolve over time beyond just an ordinary bagel shop. The family-friendly ambiance does reflect the cartoon characters of the glass walls, and the cartoons playing on the television. The business works within its own inflationary constraints, only requiring extra workers when it really needs them however rare. I admire how small businesses always know how to grapple with what little they have. Perhaps, applying the Pareto Principle to the business would help by investing first on the most vital parts of the businesses, investing second in everything else, and letting good luck fill in the rest--at least that's my personal business philosophy. I can see how this applied to updating the technology at the check-out area, just as it can apply to other areas. The owner expressed interest in situating the Bagel Store as the center of an event. Local eateries contribute more to the community than chain eateries through the local multiplier effect. Local eatery employees play a huge role, since they typically spend their income within the community itself. If the employees are leaders within their own station, then surely they could have enough voting leverage to suggest events to sponsor or create. I will say that the overall price is worth it. Rating: 5/5 Stars Given the choice between four or five stars, I will give it five stars due to the hope and potential that I see within the Bagel Store. Recommend To... Anyone and their family in the Colts Neck area looking for a bagel store.

Egg everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese

This place is okay. With NJ having a ton of bagel shops I think there is a better place you can go and grab a bagel. The bagels are big but a bit flavorless in my opinion. If you are in a hurry and this is nearby I'd say go and grab a bagel but I definitely have had much better plus I paid about $7 for this which is pretty pricey.

Whole wheat bagel, lightly toasted, with a couple of eggs, turkey bacon, cheese, pepper, and ketchup.

First time here and discovered this place next to Rook Colts Neck. Walked in about 10 minutes to 12 and they literally had 4 bagels left which lead me to believe I had to try their bagels. Opted for the one whole wheat left, toasted, with 2 egg white, turkey bacon, cheese, easy on the ketchup and pepper. 10 mins later - bliss. So glad I found another small NJ business that knows how to make an awesome bagel and a great sandwich!

Bagel no tomato not even sure if this is whole wheat...

10/2/22- orders a whole wheat bagel with veg cream cheese and slice of tomato. The young girl behind the counter charges me $6 which I felt was very high for what I ordered. Website says $3.50. She tells he it hasn't been updated in years & manager just raised prices few weeks ago. Asked for price list- there is none. I proceeded with the order bc I was hungry yet when I got home & opened it up no tomato. So $6 for a bagel with veggie cream cheese? Called the store the girl forgot & will talk to owner Tuesday bc he's not in tomorrow. Usually don't leave reviews like this but this was honestly ridiculous.

I visit my family nearby but never visited this bagel shop. First off the store is spotless and so you know they take pride in their look. They have a good selection of bagels and sandwich. I ordered an egg and cheese on a plain bagel and it was exactly what you expect to get from a bagel shop. The bagel was soft with a nice crust. The sandwich worked. I also ordered one with cream cheese and another with butter. All were consistently delicious. The other thing that stuck out to me was how busy they were but they still seemed to have quick service. They have a great team of people here and that serve some high level bagels. Check it out!

I enjoy the homemade bagels and their ability to make any combo egg ham cheese bacon or sandwich you want. Great coffee. Stocked fridge. Place to sit. Lost a star. Bad news no bagels 1p. They close at 2p. See photo of empty bagel racks.

It was fine. You can get much better bagels around, like Tommy's bagels in Manalapan.

I just paid $4.35 for a bagel with butter. Prices are ridiculous (and not posted anywhere) for an average bagel.

Great place to grab a bagel or sandwich while heading down the shore. Bagels and sandwiches are good and the prices are very reasonable.

Nice bagel shop, friendly staff. Can't beat the bacon or pork roll, egg and cheese on a plain/egg bagel.

Every time I visited my friend in New Jersey, I passed by this place thinking, "How cute is this…read morestore?" I didn't even realize it was a small breakfast spot. One day, we finally decided to stop in for breakfast. The space is very cute and quaint, and they also have a small section selling snacks and little knickknacks. The way the place operates is a bit different, you serve yourself coffee, place your order deli-style, and pay upfront like a diner. They bring the food to your table, but there isn't much table service. It was slightly confusing at first, but it didn't take away from the overall experience. That said, it was a bit disappointing that the table wasn't clean. We had a baby with us, and when we wiped the table down, the baby wipe turned brown, not something you want to see. It may have been a busy moment, but cleanliness is still important.

In Colts Neck Township, you will find this store-and-diner after navigating a series of roads. I…read moredid not think I would include this as one of my trips, but I decided that I would come. Brand: 4/5 Colts Neck General Store is located in Colts Neck Township, which is initially a store that also acts as a diner. You will find many knickknacks throughout the walls and the ceilings. The red, barn-house walls definitely gives the store a classic look. The tall sign and the wall sign do have different fonts, with the tall sign having basic font while the wall sign had a more prestigious classic look. Wait Time: 5/5 I did not have any issues with the wait time, for it arrived on time. Ambiance: 5/5 As a store-and-diner, Colts Neck General Store has that unique appeal that I see in Monmouth County. You practically feel immersed into the small town appeal with classic rock playing over the radio at a tolerable volume. The food selection on their menu reflects the small town knickknack appeal, with its varying diversity. You will also find plenty of treats for sale near the counter. The dining area had plenty of space with wide tables, whether on their own or in the booths. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Aztec Specialty Omelet, consisting of jalapeno chips, fried onion, spinach, pepper jack. with a side of toast. Initially I ordered orange Juice, but also include a bottle of water considering the hot jalapeno chips and fried onions. Every well-cooked of the omelet definitely gives it a unique spin, though the buttered toast had an unassuming taste and crunch. The pepperjack cheese brings its hardy flavor to this flavor-packed dish. The Aztec Specialty Omelet held its form, even as I cut into it. Considering how Colts Neck General Store houses many unique knickknacks, I can definitely see how one of those items may have inspired this dish, for the Mexican influence has a pronounced presence. The time it took to prepare this dish accurately matched the waiting time, and the service behind it ensured that I received the meal with my choice of side dishes. The Aztec Specialty Omelet managed to satisfy for a little bit throughout the day. Service: 5/5 The staff managed to get my order without any issues, including asking me specific questions about which side dish I wanted. Based on first impressions, I will say that I felt accommodated while feeling immersed in a small town paradise. The wait time did not try my patience. I cannot say for certain whether the staff dust the knickknacks, but I will say that nothing about the ambiance irritated me, so I presume that they care for them. They also ensured the preparation of the menu items. Cost: 4/5 I will say that as a restaurant in Colts Neck Township, it did not become as expensive as expected. Driving across many varying roads, the arrival to such a unique eatery made the food worth it. I would definitely order differing menu items if I arrive in the future. I do think that having a website would help bring modern relevance to Colts Neck General Store without changing the restaurant itself. The wall sign better represents the store than the tall sign, and if the eatery did make a website, I hope it is used for the brand. Ultimately, the price of the Aztec Specialty Omelet and staying there was worth it. Rating: 4/5 Stars Right now, I will say that Colts Neck General Store has a niche presence in Colts Neck, with its unique ambiance and menu selection. I cannot say I would go back any time soon, but if so, I would enjoy any of the other menu items. Recommend To... Anyone looking for a diner with many knickknacks decorating its walls.

My go-to orders are the bacon, egg & cheese on an everything bagel or the Bomb sandwich on a bagel. Their everything bagel is solid because it's flavorful without being overly salty like some other spots. The French toast is decent too, although it can come out a little burnt sometimes. Same goes for the home fries... they're usually very good, but once in a while they can get overdone. They also add peppers, so it can be a little spicy for kids. Service is always quick, which makes it an easy breakfast spot to keep going back to.

My…read morefirst time traveling around Marlboro Mall gave me the pleasant experience of entering Bagel Talk. Brand: 5/5 Despite the simple name, Bagel Talk displays itself with the wooden, easily identifiable logo. And despite the simple entrance, the interior makes way for a cozy vibe with the wooden-and-marble panels all over the walls. Website: 4/5 Every part of Bagel Talk's online presence perfectly encapsulates the bagel shop identity, which automatically gives it five stars, from the background image to the menus to the image presentations. While it does have the basic theme presented by Route 9 Shopper, it manages to make use out of what little it offers. Wait Time: 5/5 I did not have to wait for a long time for my order. Ambiance: 3/5 It had a warm interior despite the December weather, which is the most notable part of the ambiance. Nothing about the establishment became bothersome to me, for the television and the table space sufficed. The comfortable seats helped add to the cozy ambiance. The menu selection had an abundance of options stemming from bagels as the key ingredient. The overall interior design of the establishment separates the waiting line area with the dining area. It works in that it separates the people waiting in line from the people sitting down; but it does have its disadvantage. I also did have a problem ordering since the counters for those who ordered to go, and for those to stay had differences. I did become confused as to whether the staff would call out my name at the counter or while I sat. Also, the booth table I sat at was dirty. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Bagel Talk Bomb, which consisted of eggs, cheese, bacon, and sausage beneath an egg bagel, with a side of orange juice. I do not know if a menu change occurred, but I did not get home fries and instead got a Bagel Talk Bomb with the same ingredients but included peppers. Nonetheless, I appreciated the pleasant taste of Bagel Talk's well-heated signature dish. The sausage has the most prominent taste, giving it a meaty and inherently spicy quality. I cannot say for certain whether the egg bagels add any noticeable taste, but I will say that it does offer some taste despite not being toasted. The bagels also held their forms despite the bacon bits constantly falling off. I could barely taste the eggs and cheese though. Service: 5/5 The staff had patience with me, for I did feel lost due to the aforementioned ambiance. Worth The Money?: 5/5 The bagel dishes represent the establishment from the very name downwards. If I may suggest something, I have curiosity as to what a Marlboro sandwich would look and taste like. While a lot of the menu items do not have their own images on the website, it uses placement to make use out of what little the website theme offers. The Bagel Talk Bomb itself reflected the time it took to make it. Eating throughout the time there managed to be tolerable even as the afternoon rush started to happen, and a lot of care was put into the Bagel Talk Bomb. Concerning first impressions, I will say that Bagel Talk made a good one, for the ambiance reflects the brand perfectly. The coziness comes from both the brand and the heat inside, which might (dare I say) rival that of Starbucks. Frequenting the website itself had its own welcome ambiance. Inside the establishment, the ambiance did not try my patience while waiting for my order. My biggest issue with Bagel Talk had less to do with the service and more with the ambiance. I would suggest making it clear with clearly visible signs which counters would take the orders for to go and for to stay, and which ones would be for paying for the orders. I will say that the unique dish and the interior experience makes the overall price worth it. Rating: 4/5 Stars The experience was pretty decent, and I would like to see Bagel Talk represent Marlboro more. I would only consider Bagel Talk to be my first choice of breakfast spot if find myself in Marlboro Mall. Recommend To... Anyone looking for a breakfast spot that manages to maintain the cozy interior aesthetic.
