We had reservations for 6:30 and showed up half hour early and were seated immediately. With it opening at 5:30, not all tables were full so we were lucky. We had a nice intimate table in the back of the restaurant, surrounded by the beautiful stone architecture. The openness of the restaurant allowed for cool breezes to flow through. So nice. We started with the garlic focaccia bread and the shrimp cocktail. All good. I chose the fish of the day (mahi mahi) as my entree. It came on top of greens with green beans and a tropical mango salsa. Perfect island flavors. Our server, Jeremiah, was outstanding. He walked us through the menu. while vacationing in St. Thomas USVI, we took the ferry to St. John's. While touring St. John we had dinner at 1864. This restaurant is located in the rear of a little shopping center a fairly new build and very nicely acquainted. The Restaurant had a great ambience, and the staff was super friendly. Luckily, we were able to get three seats at the bar for dinner. It's considered very popular, I believe, because of the service and the ambience. In my humble opinion, I thought the food was mediocre at best. We started off with appetizers of mussels and oysters. My wife and daughter said the muscles were good but they had better. I ate the oysters and they were very good. I'd put them in outstanding. For dinner, my wife and daughter both had. The fried chicken with mac & cheese. They both said the mac & cheese was outstanding, but the chicken was a little dry. It looked nice to me but again that was just an observation. I had the seafood and sausage risotto. I found a sort of bland. The seafood is very good and cooked correctly, but I found the risotto and the sauce. lacking flavor. We also ordered some garlic bread for dipping with the mussels and my risotto sauce. I'm glad I asked for the extra garlic. It was good but not great. I would recommend this place if you're in St. John, it's prices are slightly less than with most of the restaurants in the area. read more

We did a pre dinner stop for drinks and apps at the bar and it did not disappoint. Happy hour is 3-5pm so take advantage if you are in the area! The bar is in an open air center of Mongoose Junction. Conveniently located a short walk from the Cruz Bay ferry stop. This stop is a little on the upscale, so it can easily be a dressier night out to dinner. We had the raw oysters and oysters Rockefeller. I have had plenty of oysters in my life and these were fantastic. The raw oysters were super clean and fresh. Perfect with just a squeeze of lemon! The oysters Rockefeller were some of the best I have ever had. Perfectly cooked tender oyster topped with such a flavorful topping. The drinks were also excellent! I came here for an anniversary meal with my boyfriend, so they greeted us with a complementary glass of champagne, which was very sweet and thoughtful. We got some cocktails and ordered the saffron seafood risotto with lobster. Unfortunately the mussels were extremely fishy, but the staff kind enough to send it back and let me order something else. Instead, I got the fried scallops, and it it's definitely some of the best scallops I've ever had. The portions were enormous! I would definitely come back. This was my favorite meal on the island hands down. First off the atmosphere is amazing. It's indoor outdoor with lots of fans so it's the perfect temperature and it's such a cool space. The venue is lovely - great ambiance & comfortable atmosphere... our party of 4 sat at the bar and unfortunately, the bartenders were not the "off duty comedians" that were advertised... The 2 ladies attending the bar were inattentive and one was outright rude. For a dinner experience that ended up being over $350, the service was disappointing at best and overall, unacceptable. The drinks were lackluster, the food was hit and miss. The elegance of this restaurant with its open air seating, melodic sounds of the cokie's and tree frogs, and white linen table cloths enchanted my wife and I after a love-charmed day at Honeymoon Beach. She ordered the catch of the day - lobster. I went for the crab stuffed prawns. We were both mesmerized by the tantalizing flavors which flooded our mouths. The entrees were nothing less than heavenly. Joe did a fine job as our waiter and kept me hydrated in light of my crimson sun-kissed skin tone. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Food was mostly just not that good. Crab appetizer was tasty, conch fritters were average. Scallops were battered and fried- most good restaurants would not hide fresh scallops that way, and they were too salty and did not have the texture that good scallops have. The risotto was soupy, and the lobster tail and shrimp that came with it were just not cooked well. For a "nice" meal it didn't hit the mark. read more

My favorite place to visit for lunch when in St. John. Their sushi and sashimi is always so fresh. It's tucked away in Mongoose Junction so it feels like you're in a little private oasis. First, I would like to shout out the wait staff, bar staff, and hostess staff. They were great and super helpful! Very kind and explained everything thoroughly and answered all questions. The only negatives in this review regard the food. The food, which is the main reason to dine at a restaurant, was very subpar. We started with two of the specials: Niçoise salad with tuna and the crab cake. Both were mediocre at best. The tuna on the Niçoise was very disappointing and borderline looked like it was out of a can. The dressing was thick and heavy. The crab cake was no better than I could make at home and had a Frenches yellow mustard dressing? Really not great. Our main for the evening was the sausage and seafood saffron risotto (aka Paella). This left much to be desired and the taste of the risotto reminded me of cheap cheese. The seafood was cooked well, I will admit that. We also got the buttered crab on the side. This was honestly DRENCHED in butter and not great. Way too heavy and not pleasant. We opted to skip dessert due to our experience with the 3 previous dishes. If you're looking for similar food with much better preparation and flavor PLEASE go to La Tapa, they are far and away superior! read more

Technically I would give this restaurant 4.5 stars. I loved everything we ate minus my steak, which I thought was too fatty and undercooked. Now that the bad is out of the way, the vibe of this place was really fun and it was nice to have a fancy dinner on our last night on the island. Drinks were amazing. So fresh and paired with the 6 different sauce varieties? It's like trying a new oyster every time. Our hotel Concierge made reservation for us at this restaurant. What a wonderful surprise. The restaurant nested in the Mongoose Junction at Cruz Bay. We walked in and we felt like we are in a plantation house surrounded by trees. We loved the ambience here. We ordered the Conch Fritters, the Stuffed Prawns and the catch of the day which was a Pan Seared Yellowtail Tuna. The Stuffed Prawns came with mashed sweet potatoes and charred broccoli. The prawns were cooked just right and I loved the pairing with sweet potatoes. The Yellow tail Tuna came with local Cassava Mofongo with Braised Pork Belly was really good. The sear Tuna was seared perfectly and the Mofongo was done in the Puerto Rican style. It was quite interesting. And we rounded up the meal with coconut cream custard. The meal was very satisfying. By far, this is probably my favorite restaurant on St. John island. Definitely will come back and highly recommend it. read more

It was good. We went for lunch. 3 of the 4 of us wanted sushi, the last got chicken teriyaki. Chicken teriyaki probably had a bit too much sauce, but really it was a generous portion and quite large. Dynamite, island dragon and veggie rolls for the sushi. We were not too hungry so this was perfect for the 3 of us. It took a while, island time. But worth the wait. For a weekday lunch it was empty. The sushi was quite fresh, but not as incredible as we are used to. We weren't too fond of the dynamite roll, and the veggie roll was bland. Yet all was eaten! ha. We were in St John for 4 nights of dinners, and 1864 was our best meal. Our server Alex ( Marcia) was terrific. She is a sommelier, and was right on point with the wines she helped us select. For appetizers we had the conch fritters, potstickers, the chowder and muscles, all delicious. For dinner we had less variety, we had 1 mahi mahi and 3tuna dishes. We were there on spring break, so I was excited to try new things. I got the buttermilk fried chicken and mac N cheese it was the best fried chicken I have ever had the Mac was also really good with lots of cheese. The food was served piping hot good. The service was great it gets your food there pretty quick. The feel of the place was chill just like you were actually on island time everyone had a great time. Plus the drinks where amazing. I went up to bar to see if they did to go and she looked annoyed that I even asked her that and responded with " only the small middle menu".
