[[HIGHLIGHT]]This is kind of an odd space. I've walked by it many times going to a gallery or to a show. It's always pretty packed. Hotel bars often are, since they have an built-in clientele. This is, apparently, a "place to be seen," a destination bar.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My friend and I tried it out on a recent weekend, after dinner. The bar was busy when we got there around 8 and packed when we left around 10p. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we arrived there was canned music on, then a pianist with a singer, then a DJ. As the music heats up, the crowd increases.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Drinks prices are in line with other local hot spots - the new norm, but high for old school Milwaukeeans. The one bartender I spoke to knew his stuff and made me a nice Manhattan without jacking up the price with high-end bourbons. My dad and I were looking to grab a small bite and a drink after a long holiday! I loved the saint kate as a hotel, but the food was kind of disappointing. We asked a few times to see if they were serving food and they assured us that we would be able to order food for a while. We ordered the dry rubbed chicken wings, and the Aria chicken that was supposed to come with a pan jus.... The wings were served to us very plainly with no dry rub and the aria chicken seemed like it wasn't seasoned at all. For both dishes they just brought us fried chicken. I was disappointed because we were both looking forward to it. For the sake of it being Christmas and the new bartender being overwhelmed, we found it kind of difficult to complain, but I probably wont order food from the bar again. The drinks were actually pretty good, but I think that our bill for the value of our experience probably wasn't worth it. read more

My friend and I got the prosciutto and Arugula pizza which was pretty good, the meatballs, we loved, and the burrata with bread was also delicious. We both loved our drinks as well. We decided to have some drinks here before our dinner reservation nearby after watching a performance in Uihlein Hall. There was a long line, so we had to wait a while. There were only three bartenders, with one of them being a new hire who had to look at the recipe for each drink he made. None of the drinks we had stood out. read more

We love the bar at Saint Kate. We have enjoyed drinks and food here before and after events downtown. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Our bartender made a great dirty martini and old fashioned. There were several bartenders working but they all seemed overwhelmed and a bit disorganized. If you are the bar you are served fairly quickly, but there were a lot of people waiting near the bar and at nearby tables without any acknowledgment. Logistics need to be revisited. But I love the ambiance! I definitely recommend coming here, just make sure you sit at the bar. read more

I've been here many, many times. The pace of service is frankly abysmal. The pizza is decent, but cannot make up for the exceedingly slow service. Didn't ultimately get to eat that one.. Though, they did pack it to go and take it off the bill without asking. Let me count the words: · Posh · Upscale · Pricey · Delightful There is a never-ending treasure trove of artistic gems to enjoy while sipping on an alcoholic drink of choice. Some pieces have strong social commentary, and some are just pretty to look at. Such a neat idea to pull works of art into a space and allow both the public and hotel guests the chance to enjoy the curated pieces. The drinks are overpriced ($29 for one glass of champagne + one vodka white claw) but, you aren't coming here just for a drink but for an experience so I will let the steep price tags slide. The only downside was there wasn't a clean table in sight for us to sit down and enjoy our drinks. Lots of empty glasses and half eaten appetizers littered all over. You ever watched a Linnaeus's two-toed sloth ambulate? That's the speed at which you can expect a drink. My 403b lost $5,346.00 between the time I sidled up to the bar and the time I had my first sip. I had time to make friends with other people waiting on drinks, got to really know them. They were doing an annual celebration to the memory of their late "perfect" brother. Charming sisters and their friends who are like sisters. I also had time to observe the set up and figure out what the problem is. On a busy Friday night, there were three people behind the bar. Two very skilled bartenders, one handling all the waitress orders, the other handling all the bar orders. They were extremely efficient and working faster than I've ever seen any bartenders work. These two were young women, I was very impressed at their knowledge of cocktails and spirits. And that I was not upcharged for ordering my drinks neat (I bought the ladies next to me drinks, not to be chivalrous, they were waiting before me and this was the fastest way for all of us to get served). The third person behind the bar was a befuddled young man whose job seemed to entail slowly and deliberately cleaning glasses and avoiding eye contact with customers and coworkers. He was more adept at the latter than the former. The problem was not either of the two bartenders, the problems was that they were the ONLY bartenders. They clearly need to hire and schedule more bartenders. While the drink prices were commensurate with downtown and that it's an elite hotel, it's too expensive for sloth-speed service. read more

I was at The Bar at Saint Kate prior to a Milwaukee Ballet performance on Oct 27. I joined my friend at 5 p.m. The place was already quite loud - for an arts facility, as The Saint Kate is, it has astonishingly bad acoustics. The chairs at the bar are terrible - you can't really lean back for support, but the bar itself does have purse hooks, which is great. They have lots of bartenders, all of whom are busy, busy, busy. OK, there was one who was quite laid back and worked so slowly that it was sort of like watching someone slog through wet sand. Otherwise, the rest were all working hard. Few of them crack a smile unless you give them one first, which is kind of sad. The food menu is very reasonably priced for an upscale hotel, with a variety of options. We ordered pizzas - my friend got the chicken and artichoke pizza, which she said was good but somewhat burned. I had a "create your own" pizza - marinara, sausage, fresh tomato, mushroom, and balsamic glaze. It would have been great, but the toppings didn't stay on the rather soggy crust, not even after it had cooled significantly. It made for very difficult (messy) dining. I compared it to my friend's pizza and wondered if the toppings might have settled better if they had burned my pizza, too. KUDOS to the tall, blond bartender who made my old fashioned mocktail - it was perfect. Also to the bartender with the hat and rocking watch who caught on that we were waiting to get our bill. If you have the time, walk through the hotel's various rooms filled with art (on the same level as the bar). My friend and I spent some great time with Anwar Floyd-Pruitt, the current artist in residence. I'm very much looking forward to coming back to see what else he fills his space with as the year progresses. When we walked through the hotel after the show, it was jam-packed and even louder. I've been to the saint Kate numerous times and tonight was a hot mess. Unlike them. Literally....sat at the bar for 30+ min. No eye contact from staff. No one cleaned up in front of me. It was like I was invisible. Usually it s a 4+..... but not tonight. Yes, they were somewhat busy..... but not to the extent customers are ignored. The dishwasher (chomping on gum) just told seated guests who were ready to pay, he couldn't help them. At least he could say he'll get the bartender. read more

I am so tired of businesses blaming their lousy service on being short staffed!!! Maybe train and invest in your people and you wouldn't be short staffed. We had to ask for our table to be wiped off 3 times. Pizza was average. The classic Big Boy hamburger took ONE hour to be served. Then it showed up cold and tasteless. I've been here to the Bar a couple times and I always really enjoy it! I love stopping in here before catching a show at either the Milwaukee Rep or the Marcus Performing Arts Center. The drinks are always so good! They even have a happy hour Sunday-Friday with $6 glasses of wine! The times that I have been, there's even been live music which makes for very cozy vibes. I haven't had any food here yet, but I always see it and it look amazing! I love Saint Kate and the whole atmosphere here. Classy yet welcoming. There are 2 parts to this review. We stayed at the Saint Kate and went to The Bar quite a few times during our stay. The bar can be quite busy at times. Our first breakfast on the morning of July 5th we were able to find a place at the bar area to eat. The bartender was clearly overwhelmed, the place was extremely busy. She immediately greeted us and said she would be with us as soon as she could. We ordered drinks, which were good and also ordered breakfast. The breakfast was disappointing, very sweet, almost too sweet to eat. We did notice the bartender was just getting slammed, more and more people. Plus she had to make the coffee drinks, all beverages, wash all the glassware, handle almost all of the dirty dishes etc. There were 2 servers for the tables also working very hard. We could see they were all frustrated, no backup, no coffee for them to serve, food was taking a long time, and the manager seemed to work slower than anyone. He didnt back up his staff, just sort of walked around like everything was ok. There were a few times I thought the bartender was going to cry. She came in to work on her birthday, which was her day off, and worked her butt off to get everyone taken care of. She never complained but we could see she was frustrated. Her service was amazing, she kept apologizing for things she had no control over. Even though the food was sub par, she earned an amazing tip from us. The next few days we stopped at The Bar for drinks, the drinks were great and the bartenders were amazing. I did note that there were 3 people behind the bar in the afternoon when i was not very busy, but only one in the morning. The other food we had at The Bar were the meatballs that were so salty we couldn't eat them. The bartender immediately took them back and brought us another item. Overall The Bar food was disappointing, they need to work on getting some new, tasty items, on the menu. The service was great, thank god for good employees, even though there is a clear lack of management, especially in the mornings. read more

Originally came here to live music on a Saturday evening ended up staying for drinks and good pizza. Beautiful bar/lounge with high ceilings and unique decorations, Wonderful live music. Take out pizza was very affordable, oven-fired and delicious. But While listen to some music the server took so long to ask if did we want to order some drink because she had a big party sitting on the other side of the band. I ask for Hennessey but said they ran out of it i ask its happy hours how is that possible, she said ill check it took her 30min to bring us back water an to tell us the don't have no Hennessy but we just order beer. read more

Hands down one of the best avocado toasts I've ever had! It was perfectly crafter, down to the chili oil that is drizzled on for a kick. Worst service in all of Milwaukee. I went the week they opened and keep trying every 6 months assuming at some point they'd get better, but they never do. Lackadaisical bartenders, no sense of urgency ever. They stroll around and are extremely slow to make drinks or even ask for an order. Other Marcus businesses seem to get it, yet after years of being open, Saint Kate can't seem to offer the service expected for their location. It's very disappointing. read more
