So on a random night, I think it was a friday, hubby and I decided to venture to coral gables to try dinner after shopping at bed bath beyond, rather than go back to brickell. We ran across a cool place that we wanted to eat at but then it had a 45 minute wait, we asked where we can go to casually grab a drink and she said the " bar @ the corner". We walked in and to our surprise, the music was on loud, people were dancing, and quite drunk @8pm. I was almost taken aback by this as it reminded me of college frat parties. We decided to get a drink or two and the music was so awesome, we delayed our reservations 2x until we finally decided to just order at the bar. Shrimp empanadas- home-made flavorful and tasty Nachos- huge decadent and delicious and cheesy Fries with gravy and pimento cheese- Absolutely divine. This is some of the best version of poutine we've had. We danced the night away and had a great time, with excellent food and would definitely come back here on a night when I'm feeling sexy and wild. read more

My favorite dive. Been coming here well over a decade. Yes it gets packed and yes it gets loud on Friday's but the music is always good, the bartenders pour great drinks (unlike a lot of other places in the Gables that really water down drinks during their happy hour or ladies night specials). The management, as well as the majority of the staff behind the bar, have been there a long time. They know faces and remember your drink of choice and probably your name. It's like the Gables version of "Cheers" for the 50+ regulars and the fact its been open over 20 years means they are doing something right. The fact that 2 negative reviews came in hours apart from two yelpers who a) only have ever reviewed one other place and also given it one star and b) claimed to have been going to the bar for a decade but didn't know the name of the bartender or manager on duty on a night where the staff was regular and very seasoned- begs the question from yelp- can we filter out the real and the obvious ploys only out to compete or ruin businesses? This place is cool. And I think it's one of the best hangouts in the Gables. It sometimes has decent bands on the weekends and sometimes has ladies night. The food is okay - nothing too fancy or special. I went for a friend's birthday party here which was fun. I've also been for happy hour. I remember trying the spinach artichoke dip which was good, but again nothing too exciting. It's kinda dark and sometimes difficult to get good seating but what else do you expect from a place called "The Bar"? And what else do you expect from a bar? I went into The Bar on a Friday afternoon (Black Friday) not knowing what to expect, but I really loved the vibe. The place has a hole in the wall feel.. it is dim and super cozy. My boyfriend and I had lunch and a few drinks and had an awesome time. We loved the food. My boyfriend ordered a grilled Mahi sandwich and could not stop talking about how delicious it was. He was talking about the sandwich all weekend so we will definitely be going back. I had the classic sliders with cheese fries. Not exactly a place a set out to go to but rather one that might be conveniently placed in my way while cruising the Gables with friends. I am a man of simple taste so a basic vodka with tonic will do just fine, or maybe a cool beer on a crowded hot night. Thus, I don't rate this place on drinks or even bartender friendliness, but rather by the potential of having a good time when I stop here. Back around 1947 this place was called the hofbrau, with signage being so expensive in those days... "The Bar," owners who bought The Hofbrau use the same lettering and switched them around to display ... "The Bar." ::boom:: money saved. And so that's how the name originated as told by the bartender who has been here since 99'. On the food side, the bar has recently changed their food menu about two months ago with the help of the chef from Josh's deli (in bal harbour). I must say, I'm quite content with the changes. As the hot wings are the best I've had so far in all of Miami. I heard the competition is Titanic's wings... Which I have not tried. Might have to do a comparision test. The staff here will take good care of you as long as you're nice. The ambience is always the "local" feel. Their craft beer selection is superb. I love The Bar, but there is one bartender who does not wear his mask over his nose. As someone who works at a medical facility, I know that not covering your nose or mouth (only one or the other) means you might as well not be wearing a mask at all. There are many professionals from the area. The bar also provides some board games and after a certain time there is a DJ spinning. On Fridays from 5:30-7:30pm ladies drink free well drinks. I have been coming to the bar for years. I have seen a lot of bartenders come and go. There's this one bartender there who unfortunately I don't know the name of but she is the most petite one with a shitty "I look so good" attitude (you can't miss her) when she just looks like she needs to take a shit. Also, do not expect amazing cocktails because none of the bartenders they hire are mixologist. Specifically this bartender who lacks all the skills of what a BASIC bartender should be. She completely ignored her side of the bar for some time since she was too occupied staring at this woman standing at the bar. As I patiently waited for her to attend to me, a man came out of left field next to this chick she was in a trance with and went to take his order. When I confronted her and said "excuse me! I was here first and have been waiting," to which she replied "that's not how this works." This is the same bartender I've seen months prior say to two men that approached her at the bar "not here!"... Left the bar completely to go towards the restroom where they followed. Mmhmm. Anyhow, I went to the back of the bar since she continued to serve everyone on that side (as a jab - of course) and I immediately got seen. I got my beer within a minute. I went back up to the front where my friends and I have been all night, made eye contact with her and told her "I got my drink, thank you!" She was so upset that she couldn't help but give me lip so I had no choice but to give it back and THEN... she got me kicked out. I will not be coming back with my friends who have all been coming here for years. The manager came out to "talk" to me even though she approached me to kick me out by placing her hand on my shoulder and saying "you need to go." I said no but when I saw she went to get the doorman/security at the front I followed. She said I wanted to talk to you, which when trying to deescalate a situation you say can we talk outside so I can try to resolve the issue. Not immediately kick the person out. She then lied by saying she was there the entire time. LOL. The bartender had to go across the bar to get you so how is it that you were there the entire time? It was laughable. And after all of that, the bartender came outside running after the chick that was standing at the bar . I can't make this shit up. However, as I stated in the beginning.. Celebrated my birthday here and the manager plus the staff did an excellent job! They really took care of my needs as well as all my guest. We had our own section in the patio, tables accommodated to our needs and our own server. We went to the bar last night after going for many years and I am sad to say that this will be the last time I ever go there!! We were sitting at the bar and some random guy walks around and reaches over the bar to grab a credit card. While we were telling the bartender what happened this girl from across the bar started screaming at my friend and I to shut the f up! She was apparently with the guy taking the credit card.We were told that they both work there. he was in regular clothes and he was drinking how were we supposed to know he worked there??? The girl continued to scream and threaten us from across the bar, there was absolutely no security and nobody was doing anything about the situation. when we asked to speak with a manger, our bartender (Adrion but at one point also told us his name was Pete) told us he was the manager and to shut up and .. "we better not write a yelp review" We left feeling so disrespected from doing the right thing. We had a genuine concern that this person was taking credit cards from behind the bar and we were attacked by employees. I will never go back to the bar! read more

Absolute worst experience ever! The server was totally unprofessional. Having been in the industry for many years I found it shocking that she didn't even give her name nor did she seem to really care. The bottle" was more like a "split" the food took close to 40 min when we canceled the order because there was a dog "INSIDE THE RESTAURANT" without a leash running around INSIDE who kept licking my legs-totally disgusted. Where was the dog's owner? What we did have "loaded nachos" were loaded with I don't know what. The bathrooms were disgusting. This is a Tuesday night mind you- 4 people at the bar and maybe 4 tables tops. If I could give a negative review I would. As someone who appreciates places with a "neighborhood bar" feel to them, I can't believe I haven't tried The Bar before! I was here on a Saturday night, arrived at about 10:30 and the place was nearly full, but not packed. Like any good neighborhood bar, I walked in and immediately saw some people I knew and ended up chatting with them for a bit. The Bar is owned by the same people who own the Purdy Lounge on Miami Beach, but personally I like the feel and ambiance of this place a little better. There are plenty of stools around the bar itself which is in the center, and there are some tables and booths to the side and along the walls as well. There is also an outdoor area they were calling the "beer garden", but it kind of made me chuckle when I saw it, as it's basically some tables and chairs set up in the alley behind the place. Good selection of beers both in bottles and on tap. I paid $6 per Stella draft and $9.25 for a rum and Coke that was a touch on the weak side. Gratuity is included in the price of each drink, but as always, if you tip them on top of that they'll watch after you. They had a cover band that started playing about 30 minutes after I got here, 4 older guys who were decent, but it really got LOUD in here when the band was playing. So loud, in fact, that I basically had to yell at the people who were sitting right next to me. They also had a college game up on the plasma TV and a larger group gathered around to watch. Very disappointed with our experience. I'm still here waiting for my food I got Here over an hour ago and there's a total of 7 people here. A dog came and licked my sisters leg and we were charged $20 for a "bottle" of wine. The "bottle" is the size of a 12oz soda bottle. Yes, location, location, location in the middle of Coral Gables this is a central location for anyone living in Miami-Dade county and we have all complained about the parking but never about location. You'll often find local bands playing at this spot but this quintessential neighborhood bar has a great jukebox. Ahhh bars with good music Glory Days. Cheeseburger Rolls - had to be sent back because they tasted like ACETONE (nail polish remover). FAIL 2. Turkey Sandwich, supposed to be "to the plate" (meaning no bread) came with bread. Fail 3. Side salad was ok. Nothing special, but at least not limp or old. Turkey Melt came with NO CHEESE (so how was it a melt!?!?!?). WTF?!? FAIL 4. Only thing worth eating: the french fries were crispy and enjoyable. Service: pretty questionable. I don't think I'd call it service. It was more of an extreme favor to the waitress apparently. She disappeared often (I wish I could remember her name - Yani, I think?) for long periods of time. Beer and water all ran out. Fail. Then she finally came to refill, but we were not liking the food, so we asked her to send it back, which she did not like. Oh, and I asked her to put cheese on the turkey melt and she totally looked at me strange. WHAT?! So Bar, I guess you know by now that I won't ever be eating here again. The black hole as I like to call The Bar is one of my favorite hang out spots. This little hole in the wall sucks you in, then spits you back out (only to remember bits and pieces the next day.) I've been coming here for quite some time and I honestly always have the best time. Friday nights here are a blast especially since ladies drink free till 7PM. This place gets so packed you can barely walk from one side of the bar to the other. Drinks are pretty cheap, and the bartenders are for the most part fast in taking your order. Saturdays is definitely fun as well with live music starting around 10. The food isn't to bad either considering it is your typical "bar food." I went to this place on a Sunday night for a late dinner. My friend wanted to drink and I wanted to eat so it actually worked out really well. It's a tad on the pricey side. But when one of my homies (you're my girl B!) suggested to take our party to the Bar in the Gables for good times I'm glad I listened. There was a group of us just looking for drinks and good music. We were willing to provide the vibe. As we drove up on a Friday night, we conveniently found parking a block away on the street. There was no cover for any of us as we all walked right in. We were instantly met with great tunes and the bar was smack-dab in the middle of the floor. The place has a very simple layout and very functional. We all went to the side of the bar and started ordering drinks. The drinks came out fast and the bartenders were friendly. The music was loud but it wasn't obnoxiously blaring in your eardrums. It was definitely at a decibel level meant for dancing and not lounging. The DJ was off the hook! Classics, new-school, old-school - he played it. He even threw some Stevie B in the mix and it was met with a great eruption of approval from the dance floor - our party included. Everyone around seemed to be having a great time. As we were partying, I was told that the owners of Purdy own this place too. That instantly explained a lot! This place is classier and does not have the "game-room" feel like Purdy - and that was a good thing on this night.
