ATTENTION families with small children: You will be judged! I have visited this winery several times over the years, and as a Loudoun County native I'm incredibly embarrassed by what I experienced today. For context, I've been to this vineyard before and had similar feelings, but we went today to celebrate a milestone in my mother's career. Our party included five children, ages 4 - 8, all brothers, sisters, and cousins: family. They were running around in the large open space the vineyard has and eventually settled at an open table to play Uno. Shortly after they started playing, a woman approached us and complained that the kids were being disruptive-- mind you the vineyard was not crowded, they could of just moved to a different area if they didn't appreciate the noise (which was outside) -- however, I immediately walked over, told the children to pack up, and had them sit with us. Fast forward about an hour later as we were packing up to leave, the same family that had confronted us earlier started applauding our departure and even flipped us off as we exited. I can't even begin to describe how this not only ruined my family's experience at this vineyard but also how it reflects a broader issue in the Northern Virginia wine industry. Stories like this are not uncommon, and it's one of the main reasons I cannot recommend wineries like this to families with young children. The bottom line is this, families with children are not welcome. This winery is not family-friendly; they are filled with older couples who don't want kids to enjoy themselves too. As a Loudoun County native, I'm embarrassed. read more

Stopped by on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The tasting room is located inside a cool renovated barn. Very rustic and country environment. They have a small event space in the lower level cellar that a bridal shower was taking advantage of. They had live music from 2-5 pm. The wine was overall okay for us compared to the other wineries we visited in the area. Our experience with Jay was amazing. We connected immediately and he was very informative and friendly. He gave us many recommendations for wines in house but also knew we were traveling the area for other wineries so he provided us with a map and a bunch of personal recommendations. He made our experience so much better. If the wine was more to our liking I'd give them 5* read more

We came here with a member so we had a great experience. We tried their reds and they were pretty good. Live music even on a Sunday but if you want a quieter setting, sit downstairs. They have a cute outside with a fire pit and a lake too. If you bring your own food you have to sit downstairs or outside so keep this in mind. I visited the Barns this weekend as part of an arranged tour. Jay Hersey was our wine host and he was awesome . Not to mention how handsome and nice he was ;) Our wine tour was in the lower level of the winery. Jay was great with the group and gave us a great overview of the winery and the wine selections. After the winery was over, we were able to table pictures and go upstairs and try other wines and ports. The ladies who were upstairs were very Nice and told us about the wine we could purchase. My wine tour mates bought the wine in the bag, port, and also enjoyed the cheese. What I like about the winery is it is diverse. The other staff was very welcoming. I really enjoyed all of the wines I tried here on Saturday. I did a mixed whites and reds flight (they don't do guided tastings). I got a bottle of the petit verdot to take home. The employees were all friendly, helpful, and on top of keeping the tables uncluttered. They were constantly coming by to take away empty flight boards and glasses. They have increidably friendly and knowledgeable staff. It is a beautiful rustic venue with a gorgeous scenery. The winery is located in a restored barn. By the way, the barn is over 100 years old. There is live music during the weekends. Plus they're open until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Not many are opened after 6 p. m. They allow outside food and it's dog friendly. The wines are excellent. The venue is super cute and cozy. The service is great and everyone working was super helpful when I had questions on their wine selection. We came on a beautiful, but chilly fall Saturday and there was plenty of seating outdoors. I am not sure if you can make reservations, it looked mostly first come, first serve. They have a wood-fire pit for staying warm around as well as to roast marshmallows. They sell smores kits just in case you forgot yours! I had their Hamilton wine flight which was $20. It came with a lovely mix of reds, whites, and a rose. I was not a huge fan of their wines in the flight. I typically like full-bodied, dry red wines and none of the ones in the flight had that profile. I'm a member of this winery, so I get the luxury of visiting quite often when I go to member events. This winery is charming and isn't highfalutin or intimidating. The barn is really rustic and there's so much land to explore and get away if it is crowded. There has also never been a time where I've gone to this winery and there hasn't been live music. They usually always have great performers that do great covers. I would definitely recommend the cheese basket if you go with a group of people. They don't skimp out of the serving size and will in fact serve you a huge chunk of cheese and meet and whatever jam or spread you choose. I was pleasantly surprised by that and was expecting a charcuterie board with like 2 pieces of cheese and a half a piece of meet. You could feed a family of 4 or 5 with the cheese basket. it's definitely worth the money. The wine speaks for itself and is great. I tend to like the white and rose wines better than the reds here. The whites are really refreshing and great for sharing a bottle with people who can appreciate it. read more

I've been exploring different wineries to check out and why not use a birthday as an opportunity! It was perfect weather and day to get some friends together and drive up to VA for some wine. Luckily our friends arrived just in time to snag a table in the shade with just enough seats for everyone. We all brought our own snacks, which was perfect with the wine. Everyone has different taste buds, so we each ordered our own glasses, bottles, or pitchers of sangria. My husband and I ordered the different tastings and shared them. He really liked the cab Franc and I enjoyed the barn white. We ordered a pitcher of the sangria, which my sister loved, but it was definitely too sweet for me. The scenery and ambiance is really great. I loved the barn and the fresh smell of wood when going inside. Ordering was pretty simple. They give you a number, which up put up when you're ready to order. They are very efficient and offer great customer service. This was our first stop along the wine trail in the area. The barn from outside is pretty amazing. Looking at my photos, inside is incredible upstairs and below. They have a balcony outside with that amazing mountain view that everyone gets to see outside in the area. The ladies up front were nice and helpful with our experience. The wines were all really good. After visiting 12+ wineries on the trail, this one is my ultimate favorite. Based on the overall experience, environment and wine was all good. Visited this cute winery on a late Monday afternoon. Figured I'd be stuck in traffic anyways, might as well do a tasting, have a snack and head home post traffic. I did the reserve tasting for $15 since I typically like aged and drier wines, I enjoyed the Meritage and Cabernet Sauvignon the most. The person doing the tasting gave great descriptions as I tasted each wine plus it helped that she and I had similar palettes. The Meritage is a rich, full-bodied red wine crafted solely from noble Bordeaux grape varieties - Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Malbec and I found this to be drier than the Cabernet Sauvignon. Also enjoyed tasting their port! I ended up spending $73.14 just by myself! -$15 reserve tasting -$32 Meritage bottle -$9 glass of Cabernet Sauvignon -$10 salami -$3 baguette So they have an picnic basket option for $25 which is a great value: -1 cheese -1 meat -1 spread -1 baguette or crackers They also have live music and multiple seating areas both indoor and outdoor. read more

Loved this winery; rustic & cozy inside & out, very friendly staff all around, great selection of red/whites (recommend Harmony (red) in the $20-ish range)) and just a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. I had the wine sampler and enjoyed everything I sampled. Stopped in with a small group when they opened, the weather cooperated (no rain, snow or heavy wind) so we were fortunate enough to be able to sit outside. They have plenty of tables and seats and will be happy to bring a firepit to you upon request with extra wood to keep toasty. It's very COVID friendly as everything is spaced out. There is an outdoor seating area on the upper level (attached to the barn) and also limited indoor seating. They also offer a limited food menu with crackers, cheese, etc. On this particular day they also offered chili and cornbread although I didn't try the food. The grounds are beautiful, they own a decent amount of acreage and the barn is old/rustic and just has such a lovely feel. No gripes with their procedures; to each his own. I think sometimes a little flexibility from a customer standpoint can go a long way; these businesses have had to sacrifice so much during COVID and *most* have done their best to adapt to state/federal requirements (which isn't cheap and impacts their bottom line). So, that said I thank this wonderful business for serving us during these crazy times and offering a beautiful haven for people like me to enjoy. read more

The Barns at Hamilton Station is a small winery with a mellow/relaxing barn style tasting room and a nice deck with a view. Their winemaker is the award-winning Michael Shaps who is more known for his eponymous label, but it doing some great work here. Several of the wines here have won awards in the Virginia Governor's Cup. I prefer their big reds: 1. The 2013 Petit Verdot is a very dark/inky wine with blackberry notes and substantive spice finishing with some vanilla and toast. 2. The 2014 Malbec is tank fermented and then aged in neutral oak. Very powerful and strong tannins. 3. The 2014 Meritage. The wine won the 2017 Virginia Governor's Cup Gold. It is a reserve blend with smoky chocolate/coffee smell and lots of complexity in a Bordeaux style blend. Pricing is mid-range for the better wineries in the region. About $25-35 per bottle. read more

I want to say that I am definitively not an oenophile and that, even for those who are very well-versed in wine, it's just such as subjective thing. So, I'm not saying Virginia wine and The Barns aren't both great, they just aren't great for me. For my part, Virginia wines are a nice thing to do on a weekend, but the climate just doesn't lend itself to making great wines. That, and a lot of the wineries are so new to wine-making that their vines aren't mature enough and they aren't as experienced in making the wines that do grow well in VA for it to be something I really want to rave about. A lot of the wines are blends and/or not actually grown in Virginia, and the grapes that can survive Virginia's wet weather tend towards jammier wines that I just don't enjoy. Anyway, even with these low expectations, the Barns at Hamilton was still underwhelming. The setting is lovely, and I could see this being a great setting for a wedding or event, but I wasn't impressed with any of the wines and our food was all pre-packaged and processed stuff that wasn't that great. The cheese and hummus were pre-packaged and didn't even come unwrapped. The bread was freshly heated, but certainly wasn't freshly baked and wasn't very good. Our basket didn't even come with sufficient plastic knives to be able to use on the cheese and hummus. If I wanted to have a grocery store picnic and bad wine, I could have done that without the long drive from DC. Our server was super kind and has been there for the entirety of this being a winery and that made the whole thing much more pleasant, even though we didn't love the wine! This isn't the Barns' fault, but some couple also brought their dog in and kept letting it off its leash (which led to several gentle but firm reminders from the bar). It's so cool that you can bring your dog inside--but if you do, be a decent human being and keep them on their leashes, y'all. It's a health thing since they serve food, but also just a considerate thing to do that makes everyone's experience excellent, not just your dog's! read more

I think the most fair way to review this winery is pros & cons. Pros: they do not require reservations. -they have ample outdoor seating -the view of the pond is beautiful -they had live music -they have a self guided tasting where you can "build your own" with 6 wines from their selection Cons: They don't require reservations- so the vibe/ seating is chaotic. They give you a table number when you arrive, but you have to go find a table. They also take your credit card at the door then you go pay at the end- REALLY do not like this process- especially these days. I felt comfortable sitting outside because the tables around us were not occupied, otherwise, the tables would have been close for my comfort. I did not like the structure of the tasting. The first white wine should be a dessert wine and it is first on the list. This didn't give you an opportunity to enjoy other wines before jumping straight to sweet. I actually did the tasting in reverse and had the sweetest one for last which was a little better. All of the wines were too sweet for my liking, though. Wineries are all about preference, and clearly people love it here- the parking lot was packed- it just wasn't for me. They are very family and dog friendly. The workers were not overly warm or friendly. If you like sweet wine & an energetic vibe, this place is for you. read more

Another Michael Shaps-assisted winery that does his name proud. Nice historic vibe too. With so many wineries around it it's hard for one to stand out, but I liked this more than many of its neighbors. The Barns is...well...a barn! Actually a 100 year old refurnished barn that gives it a very homey feel. It also has an amazing view of the manicured grounds and pond in the back. Ambiance? Check. My server was very friendly and attentive. This tasting was free because on a previous visit I came late, so they gave me a free coupon and invited me to return again. It was hard to argue with free booze with a knowledgeable server. Hospitality? Double-check. The wine's most defining characteristic was their wonderful color. Pretty much every single one of them I wanted to admire (before drinking). Wines which I tried: 2013 Petit Verdot: very good. They said it was newly bottled but I couldn't tell. But it will get even better with age. 2012 Meritage: good. Actually I had an extremely hard time defining this one; I'll just say I liked it. 2013 Cab Franc: little peppery, not bad at all. HSV Harmony: light red blend. Not as nice as the others but still decent. The whites? Well...lets just say they were either on the buttery or sweet side. Neither is my cup of tea (um...glass of wine?). But my all time favorite was the 1910 Port-style. It had a wonderful strong nose but surprisingly the body wasn't overwhelming. Most of their grapes are from Charlottesville; normally I prefer places that are estate grown, but they explained the local real estate is pricy, plus C-Ville has a better climate for most of their grapes. Oh well; at least they get all but a small portion from VA. So yeah....I'll be back. read more

in the fall when I organized my wine tour with 10 beautiful ladies! Today , was all about pampering MOI and just enjoying some wine, foods and music . Let me start , upon entering a young lady named Katherine is at the entrance and will give you the guidelines. You give your credit card, grab your glass and your bottle with your number attached to it that you will place on your table when you need service. Masks are required inside but you free to take them off at your table . I was able to find a great table under a tree a few feet away from the musicians. If you lazy like me, you don't need to move , just place that bottle with the number on your table and one of the employees will come to you. Plenty of spaces for social distancing and people were really respectful of your personal spaces and had masks inside. I decided to do the self tasting, chose 4 whites and 2 reds. I loved all 6 wines, lol!! Decided to go with the 2018 Cascina on this hot Sunday! I had to buy the 2018 Malbec for my wine collection What I love about this winery is that is not as big as other wineries that I have been to but the view is breathtaking, wines are wonderful and customers service is impeccable! Jay was the gentleman that took care of my group last year and to my big surprised he remembered me, lol... but seriously who can forget a doll face like mine just kidding! Ended up at The Barns for an employee appreciation event. We were able to sample a few of their wines. The day that our event was hosted there was also Paella by Carlos that was selling paella and there was also live music. The Barns is a very small vineyard then I'm used to but the venue itself (The Cellar) is very beautiful and rustic. There is even a patio outside with chairs and a beautiful view with a a small lake on the land. Wines: I got to try the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Rose and the Viognier. All four were very good. The rose was not overly sweet was good. The Viognier was crisp and was a bit dry but not sweet at all. The Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot were both acidic but I didn't mind it to much it just meant that the reds that they have are a bit younger. Overall The Barnes is a nice place just to hangout with friends and enjoy the weather. Wine is pretty good also. Although I will say it is a bit hard to find the entrance to place and there aren't too many signs telling you where the entrance to the vineyard is so if your not paying attention you might miss it. read more
