This was my first time in The Basement. It definitely is living up to my expectations. What a cool concept and environment! We only shopped (and drank) at two of the businesses last night, but walked around and saw many others that we want to check out in the future. I love the fact that it has some of the old machinery visible and think that little theater-like area would be a great location for several types of events. "Y'know, it's super underground... you probably haven't heard of it." Nothing says boho urban hipster quite like being literally underground. Luckily, the general vibe and feel of The Basement is much more accessible than it sounds. Well... once you find the entrance. Full disclosure: The Basement immediately won my love with its open-space mess hall. Flanked by RAWBRY and Global Coffee, it makes for an interesting cafe area/public workspace hybrid. But more importantly, it comes complete with tables that have multi-plug outlets BUILT IN. Kanye has warned us time and time again: "no one man should have all that power." Apparently, The Basement disagrees. I'm probably in the very small minority of people that get ridiculously excited about tables with built-in power sources, likely because of the past four years spent glued to my laptop churning out papers and my perpetually dying iPhone. But there are a crazy amount of outlets available: so much so that you could plausibly charge your laptop, phone, and tablet, set up a space heater, and plug in a panini press on your side of the table with plugs and room to spare. Fantastic place to set up camp for writers, college students, and mobile workers alike. There's a handful of budding businesses speckled throughout the tunnel system. Grab some local swag from Tahoe Nevada Love. Sharpen up your style with some bourbon on the side at Beautiful Bearded Man. Sweets galore at the chocolate shop. Salad bar incoming! The Basement functions as both the fresh alternative and modern response to strip malls everywhere. The slow but steady development down there leaves the area walking a thin line between refurbished artsiness and mild "ruin porn" with a few nooks and crannies evoking asbestos nightmares... but the progress shows strong signs of promise. They're not just brewing juice and coffee down in The Basement; they're brewing culture. I'm beyond excited to see how this place evolves in the months to come. read more

This is such a great concept and I LOVE repurposed buildings. The old Reno Downtown Post Office building is an ionic Art Deco edifice. They just don't build then that way anymore. The repurposing of the basement area, never intended for consumer viewing, has been been long awaited by this Reno resident. You enter the space via the old PO loading dock on the East (Center Street) side of the building. You then climb down the staircase to the bowels of the building. There is an elevator on the main floor (diagonally across from the entrance to West Elm) for ADA accessibility. The main part of the basement is a large open area with tables and chairs ringed by Global Coffee, Rawberry Juice Bar, a bar, and Chomp. This is a hipster's dream of a food court. There is free wifi in the space. The rest of the basement space is devoted to a huge variety of retail shops - all unique and very much local businesses. It is exciting to see how it has developed and grown over the last year. This is a genuine gem in the heart of Reno. read more

This place truly is a Diamond in the Rough! I had the opportunity to tour the old post office as it was being prepped for its new life which included the Basement, the 1st floor which they kept a lot of the art-deco charm (a large retailer is moving in but it's all very hush hush on who the retailer will be) and the top floor will be Reno's highest priced office space. The Basement was billed (on the tour anyway) as a NY style market a la Eataly. Eataly is mostly food owned by 3 celeb-chefs. The Basement is a collective of local artisan shops. It's still under construction. I'm all for raw industrial space but I can live without the heavy duty plastic sheeting. The good: - Local Shops: RAWBRY (pressed juices), Global Coffee, Sugar Love Chocolate, Kalifornia Jean Bar, Old Timey Men's Barber Shop, Florist and Pantry Vault (made-in-house body & bath products - all seasonal -- located in the old Post Office Vault). - Large communal tables in the main hall - Hours: Monday - Friday 7am-11pm // Saturday - Sunday 9am-9pm Great hours to meet anyone's schedule. The not so good: - There are 6 parking spaces; several are 20 minute parking. Due to the construction of the VA bridge and the Sienna hotel, the parking is at the CalNeva (park at your own risk). - Enter through the loading dock. - Not a lot of signage to explain how to get in, where to park, or what's in the Basement. For sure I'll go back. I'm excited to see what new businesses will move into the Basement and how it will look finished. read more

We were in a few weeks ago, and it was a nice visit. They've got a variety of stores to enjoy as well as a juice bar and a chocolate store. All hits on my lists, but it's also a historical place, and they've remodeled the building so that you can enjoy it, with glimpses of the past and viability for the immediate future. read more

This place is actually a pretty neat whole in the wall. Parking is free? I kind of made the mistake of parking where the toll meters are no paying. Lol. At The Basement, there's a few things, like clothing stores, a juice bar, a barber shop, plants/flowers to buy. Most definitely hipster like but cool to check out. What a neat space in the heart of downtown Reno! Located in the historic old post office right on the Truckee river at the corner of S Virginia, the Basement is, appropriately located downstairs. The entrance is on the east side of the building. There's a coffee shop, an apothecary, a distillery that also serves lunch, a chocolate shop (that ALSO serves lunch), a dapper men's barber shop, a gym where you box in the dark, a Nordic design store, a Reno/Tahoe clothing/gift shop, a photo studio and a jewelers. Also, right in the middle is a nice, open space with tables and chairs where one can work, read, or visit. I love this space! read more

What an awesome and unique space! The Basement is like an underground market place where different businesses have setup shop. What I loved so much about this space is that it offers a common area with tables, chairs, and plenty of outlets in the mezzanine outside of all of the businesses. I definitely see myself coming back, grabbing coffee or juice, then doing some work at these tables. I think that The Basement offers a really unique space/atmosphere and I can't get enough of it! The Basement is a hidden gem of Reno, Nevada hidden in "the basement " of the historic 1933 U.S. Post Office. Hard to find parking. And hidden away from public view is a beautiful enclave of small local businesses. I would totally suggest checking it out! read more

The Basement's got a very hipster-y, almost grungy feel to it. It's like the epitome of a millennial's ideal cafeteria. One equipped with a barber shop, a succulent shop, a smoothie place, a chocolatier, a theatre/stage, and a coffee shop (along with a bunch of others). All it's missing is a secret entrance into an outdoor adventure store. Or maybe it has one already? When the Basement first opened, there were hardly any useful seating areas where a college student could sit and get some homework done. I loved the whole vibe the Basement was giving off, but it lacked accommodations for someone who needed more than a quick visit to the shops or a coffee/smoothie fix. Now that they've added loads of seating areas (some with outlets attached to the tables), it's become one of the best options in the city to hangout or study in. One Saturday night, I came in to study for my exam. It turned out that the Basement became a bar that night and I was over 21 so I was able to stay, but my friends weren't so we had to leave. Be aware of their schedule as sometimes events are being held here. They've got plenty of open space to do so! Also, there are a bunch of cool spots that you can get some great photos in. There's a hallway in the back equipped with lights running horizontally that looks awesome for testing your lowlight portrait photography skills. Overall, really enjoy how much the Basement has developed since it opened and can't wait to see what else they're going to do! read more

My first time at The Basement was this morning. Sunday morning around 10 a.m. There were maybe 20 people in the whole place. Just hanging, out eating and drinking. The place has a nice vibe. There's what looks like an area for live music. It's a nice combination of old and new and with a tip of the hat to it's former function as he main post office. Lots of space to hang out, drink coffee, chat and just take it all in. I'll definitely come back and would recommend it as a relaxing place to hang out for a few hours. read more

What an AMAZING use of space! Yes it's beyond hipster, and even a little pretentious, but once you get past all of that you totally fall in love. There is a wide array of local shops - coffee, juice, clothing, apothecary, a barber, chocolate, and my very most favorite shop - Tahoe Nevada Love. There is a great open space when you first walk in with tables that SCREAM come study here, or meet your people and chill. I think I even saw a bar on my most recent trip. If that's the case I'll definitely be spending quality time at The Basement. My favorite thing about the Basement is seeing the pictures on the walls depicting the history of the building. Way to upcycle but remember your roots! Kudos to those running this establishment and the great businesses that have moved in. read more

WOW. Well, I found my new absolute favorite spot in Reno and I do not say that lightly. The basement is so trendy and cute and such a cool environment. Secretly I hope no one else finds out about this place so it can stay as low key as it is. First off whoever thought out putting study tables out in the middle with outlets at every chair station you are my hero. Even campus buildings haven't picked up on that trick. Also I'm so freaking excited for the lecture area and for ted talks. To get to the basement you have to walk downstairs and then you get to the good stuff. Local business owners with local products. Coffee, juice, clothes, beauty products, you name it and it's still growing. I used to love the coffeebar and I still do but it's so overcrowded. Now I can go to the basement and study and get everything done in a really awesome environment with even lovelier people. Great job Reno! read more

This is a great place to come and get some stuff done while enjoying some of what the local businesses down here have to offer. Plenty of work tables and space to do projects, study, or get some work done before working out at Escape or grabbing a drink from the speakeasy. You can also enjoy a coffee or a salad while you work. This is truly a one stop shop. There's even outlets in some of the tables. My only suggestion would be to offer free WiFi to the people utilizing the workspace. But otherwise, it's a clean, quiet space to get some stuff done. read more

This is a great start to rehabbing the old post office. By using unoccupied space to create new vibrate niche! There are several businesses already set up inside of The Basement like rawbry and the flower shop. But this place can be so much more. Because of the construction on south Virginia this place was a bit difficult to get to. But they have a small parking lot right next to the building which is convenient. This place is located in the basement so not stroller friendly (for now). They are developing still and I would love to see what becomes of the post office if it is able to be rehabbed. read more

The one star goes directly to the barbershop; the rest of the place is unique and haven't had a bad experience! I went here with my boyfriend (he is openly transgender) and waited in the sitting area while he went in. He immediately came out in tears and I asked what had happened. He told me that he asked the guy to fix his hair (he has his sides shaved). The guy was very rude to him and told him that he cannot cut his hair due to him being a woman. The guy was being very discriminate and continued to say that he will not cut a woman's hair. This being Reno, with diversity spreading everywhere, I was not expecting this. I will NOT recommend this barbershop to anyone. read more

Long overdue review. One of my favorite places in town. I randomly stumbled upon it a few weeks after I moved to Reno and has been a favorite of mine ever since. It reminds me so much of Grand Central Station in NY, Grand Central Market in LA, or Mercado de San Jacinto in Mexico City. As someone who works from work, I need a change of scenery once in a while and this is a nice place to set up shop. I can work from there, have coffee, a healthy meal and do some shopping. When I first discovered there were just a few shops but that is changing. I like how the businesses complement each other: Escape, Chomp and Rawbry seem to work together to promote an active, healthy lifestyle. The shops also make a smart use of the space and collaborate to cross promote. A few months ago, The Basement hosted a yoga class in hand with Juice Box Yoga and the Rawbry offered discounts to the attendees. Or the hand soap in the bathrooms is provided by The Pantry, a fellow vendor. Sugar Love holds Sugar Love University at the community space. In a nutshell this is a beautiful and smart space and see myself spending more time there in the months to come. I took a trip to Nevada and was recommended the Basement, specifically their store CHOMP. I ordered the Post Office Salad and was beyond impressed (being from Northern Cali...this is hard to do). The customer service was great! My server Zoey was super helpful in helping me choose my salad, genuinely sweet and told me all about what the basement had to offer. I will definitely be coming here again on my next visit from Cali. Side note: Upon Zoey's recommendation I stopped by The Stem Flower Shop and was greeted by again, great customer service and a wide variety of succulents. Cool new space in the historic post office featuring little teeny stores, coffee, raw bar, a bar (this is Nevada), sandwich/salads, handcrafted chocolates and swanky clothes. Lots of open space to work- if I lived here I would probably come to use as work space and there is an small amphitheater that will probably host some events in the future... thinking author readings, maybe documentary screenings- I dunno. I had a $7 piece of avocado toast with cashew Parmesan and pea sprouts..... so so so good- not worth the price but good for them for putting together something that tastes so amazing. I recently moved to Reno (not by choice) from the Tahoe area and desperately needed to know this move would fill me with inspiration. I've sought out all the "best" places and The Basement did not disappoint. I'd been extremely curious about this space from the moment I heard about it. An old post office basement being updated and turned into a healthy and progressive place to gather and share spirits? What a concept! From the moment you step onto the platform which leads you through the doors downstairs you're transported to another world (through time and space). The lighting, the metals, the floors and design just takes you back and forward. I love the bar area being center stage, the bathroom was awesome (I cant believe I even wrote that!) and the other shops quaint and unique! A beautiful barber shop, salad bar, flower boutique, Global Coffee and Pantry Products all call this place home. I had a grand time exploring the area and finding something new and clever around each corner. The most intriguing to me was a darkened room with an "opening soon" sign. Inside a caged doorway were the MOST BEAUTIFUL items of clothing- cloaks and coats, a skirt made of what looked like pine needle branches. There they were, mannequins hanging in the dark- waiting for their master's return. I will be back to find the creative mastermind of this eerie space. The only thing that makes it challenging is the parking. I was lucky to find free, short-term parking, but it wasn't easy to say I'd want to stay long based on this situation. Only been here once and I love the idea of all the unique shops in one place. But I was really disappointed in the fact that there are no changing tables in any of the bathrooms! Because of that I won't be going back there. When looking up the location and time, it says kid friendly. So you'd think there would at least be something to change a baby on. The basement is one of Reno's best places! The Stem Flowers is one of the features of the basement and they do amazing work! I ordered two terrariums from there and they came out beautiful. They have a wide variety of succulents and flowers to choose from and the service is amazing. I got my terrarium around Christmas time and they even had Christmas themed terrariums! How cute!
