**This is a review for Char's at the Bavarian Manor, not for the inn itself** We came here for dinner this evening and it was a total disaster. We are visiting with family in town and were told about the new launch of this restaurant and we're excited to check it out. We had a 5:30 reservation and were seated right away. We were a party of 6 adults and a toddler. Our party ordered apps, we got the deviled eggs and the fried calamari. These things took 45 minutes to get to the table. Serving someone deviled eggs shouldn't take 45 minutes, and the calamari was frozen, so we are unsure why the opening of the service was so slow. It was almost as if the chef was deviling the eggs right at that time and for the amount of time we waited she would've have to have been cutting and battering a squid in the flesh which I know was not happening in there. Also, just to note the restaurant wasn't full. There were probably four other tables with diners. At this point, our toddler is starting to get increasingly restless, as it has been an hour and change, and the entrées have not been delivered yet at this time. My husband and I are taking turns to go into the lobby to distract her and get her moving so she wouldn't have a meltdown in the restaurant. We keep inquiring about where the dinner was and we're told several times "it's on its way" or "it's coming soon". Flash forward to 7:30pm. Our entrées were scattered arriving to the table, I asked the waitress where are my child's grilled cheese was and she said that she had forgot to put it in. (She did say she was sorry but when you have a hangry child sorry doesn't cut it) We waited all this time and the food for our baby's meal didn't exist. At this point, she was having a full fledged meltdown in the lobby, and so did I. I expressed great displeasure to the server and told her I needed her to box up mine and my husband's meals as soon as they arrived to the table, so we could leave to go deal with our toddler at home because she had reached her breaking point due to the long wait and lack of FOOD IN A RESTAURANT. We waited for our dinner service for two hours and the quality did not justify the long wait. Water logged canned green beans (the kind you get in a school or prison cafeteria),flavorless mashed potatoes, what looks and tastes like stove top stuffing... and the worst part about the whole experience, was not receiving proper customer service for this terrible experience. Me and my husband didn't even get to eat our meals at the table in the actual restaurant, which we were still charged for fully. My mother-in-law told me they comped the grilled cheese from the check (and again, I wouldn't know because I had to leave) but comping a $10 item that you forgot to put in, in the first place is not enough for the bad experience overall. We will never come back here. The kitchen brigade seems nonexistent or very inexperienced. Piss poor dinner service with even worse customer service. read more

Authentic German food at its best. Visited during COVID restrictions so probably didn't get the full feel for the place but quaint setting and atmosphere. I ordered Sauerbraten that was served with red cabbage and a potato dumpling. All delicious and tons of meat. Ordered a few apps for sharing including their 5 star potato pancakes. I also ordered the crab cakes based on other Yelp reviews. While they were delicious, they didn't live up to the hype, maybe because I had Authentic German cuisine on my mind. I also sampled some spaetzel off my wife's plate and it was amazing. My wife had the Wiener schnitzel which she would highly recommend and another in our party had the Jager schnitzel, also great. Their German beer selection was great with about 4 or 5 euro pours on tap. So why not a perfect 5 based on my comments. I will say it is a 4 star with an asterisk due to Covid. We were only able to get a 7:30 reservation as that was the earliest available which was fine. Service started good and in the middle of our order, waitress got pulled away to served food to another table stating she would be right back. She didn't return for over 20 minutes to ask the other two at our table for their order. Not a big deal because we were not in any rush. Food was a bit slow but not unbearable, especially with Covid restrictions etc. one person in our party got dessert and a minute after we paid the bill, still with drinks half full, we were told dining room was closing. I get that they wanted to go home but the 20-30 minute delay taking our order is the only reason we were still there. (Side note, the server was very good but something sidetracked her) We will definitely return to the Bavarian Manor and I highly suggest it for a nice meal in a cool area of New York. read more

My family and I had gone to the Bavarian Manor for decades. My wife's family comes from Bavaria, and are chefs as well as operated the Hotel Krone in Gunzenhausen, for over 30 years. My Irish Grandparents ran a bed and breakfast in Co. Mayo, Republic of Ireland for almost 40 years, and I would help them with it during the summer months. My family and I knew the previous very gracious owners, Suzanne Bauer-Oldakowski, God rest her good soul, and Chef Stan Oldakowski, and were always made to feel very welcome by them at the Bavarian Manor. My family and I wanted to give the place a try again on Saturday, 7 October 2023, and made reservations, but had to cancel as the rain was downpouring and we had my 90 year-old father-in-law with us, who really wasn't up to the 30 minute trip down the mountain to the Bavarian Manor. I called and canceled and made another appointment for Sunday. On Sunday, I called to confirm we were coming despite the rainy afternoon, and the man who answered abruptly said "I know who you are. You canceled yesterday and you have reservations for 5 o'clock. We know! Don't be late." I was a bit surprised at the rudeness but I chalked it up to unprofessionalism, lack of training or proper experience in the hospitality industry on the man's part. We arrived ten minutes early, and I parked in front to allow my father-in-law and wife to enter, as he was recently released from hospital after having pneumonia, and has a little difficulty walking. They entered the dining room and a white, bald-headed man (later identified as "Torey") asked if they had reservations. The room was near empty at the time of their arrival save for a party of three by the windows. My wife explained that we had reservations for a party of three under the name Dennis. The man rudely snapped "I know who you are. You canceled yesterday. Well you're here now anyway." He then seated my wife and father-in-law. I parked the car and joined them and my wife told me what happened. I wanted to say something to him for his rudeness but my wife said not to make a scene. Cheryl our server could not have been nicer and friendlier. She took our order and singlehandedly served the room, which began to fill up with a party on ten, then three, then two, then three other guests, in the dining room. 21 guests total by herself as well as bringing dishes out for the guests in the bar area. When a male server brought out our orders, we noticed that they were not Jagerschitzels but were Weinerschntizels, with lemon wedges and not the mushroom gravy served on the pork cutlets. He brought the dishes back and this time were with gravy. The cutlets we found were overcooked. My father-in-law only ate a portion of his dish. My wife's pork tenderloin was very fatty and was also overcooked. She did not want to eat any of it. We did not bother ordering dessert. Cheryl was very apologetic about the way Torey spoke to my wife and father-in-law, and for any issues we had with the food. I regret to say after 40 years of coming to the Bavarian Manor, often with parties of betwen 14 and 18 people, we will never be coming back to this place. It is not the Bavarian Manor you might have visited. Do not waste your tie or your money. Rudeness, nasty attitudes, and bad cooking is what you'll find. read more

Wunderbar!! This review is on the restaurant... I have not stayed in the hotel, although I've heard the rooms are very nice. This place is like stepping back in time to an old Victorian inn. Such a beautiful, setting. The bar served an excellent Cosmo. There were a selection of German beers, As well as all the usual drinks. They have an extensive menu with many German specialties. My group sampled several of them, and they were all delicious. I lived in Germany for eight years, and the food at Bavarian Manor was very authentic. I plan to go back soon. read more

We were forced to stay here after I screwed up my AirBnB for the following weekend and were pleasantly surprised. They were extremely accommodating and squeezed 5 of us (3 kids) into a room with a cot! From the creaky, uneven stairs to the old pictures adorning the walls, this place is old school and super interesting. I'd recommend walking around the halls, and check out all the pictures and books. The only think I wish we had a chance for was the food, it smelled great in there. read more

On the drive up from NYC to Saratoga Springs, I had the opportunity to cross off a major item on my bucket list and visit the German restaurant at the Bavarian Manor Country Inn. Why is this charming inn in upstate New York a bucket list item for me, you might ask? Well, for me the allure came not just from the German good (which has a gravitational pull all its own as far as I'm concerned), but because it is the place where my childhood hero, Madeline Kahn, got her start working as a singing waitress. If you go into the restroom area, there is a lovely tribute to Maddie hanging on the wall. But this review is about the food, so let's get down to it. As a German food fiend, there were several items on the menu that were tempting, but since we still had a long drive ahead, my travel companion and I were forced to limit ourselves. To start, we ordered the chicken liver mousse. Topped with a garnish of marinated sour cherries, and served with toasted baguette points, the mousse was smooth and subtle (the way I like my liver spreads) and the tartness and sweetness of the cherries offered the perfect counterbalance. What really took me by surprise though were those celery pickles! I am not much of a celery fan, but these were crisp, crunchy and the brine actually mellowed out that celery flavor that I can otherwise take or leave. For entrees, I went with the jaegerschitzel, as that is generally my go-to item with Bavarian fare. Schnitzel topped with a hearty mushroom cream gravy, served over spaetzle. Top-notch. My companion got the weisswurst platter. Both meat dishes were tender, succulent and the flavor was absolutely divine. Quaint place to stay. It definitely is a place that has been around for a very long time and in need of updating, which we heard that the current new owner is working at little by little. Things we liked: the setting away from the hustle and bustle of life in general, the epansive front lawn area with mutiple seating areas and a fire pit; having an in-house restaurant with good foo;, friendly staff; far enough but not too far from home so we did not spend a lot of time traveling, Things that we did not like: no hot water for showers one morning but hot water for an evening shower OR a morning one the next day -- probably too many guests were tapping in to the hot water that morning; limited wifi access; the lake and paths we saw in some of the promo materials was definitely lacking, needing a lot of attention -- smelled sewage down around the lake and so the hoped-for fishing and walking didn't happen; no drinkable water in the restaurant UNLESS you paid for a $7 bottle. (Waitress said the water drinkability was due to the iron in the water.) That's probably the general overview. We hope that the new owner will, bit-by-bit make tne many needed improvements, as if guests don't generally mind it as it currently is, imagine how much more they -- and new guests -- will as word spreads that the place is excelling in hospitality. There would need to be some notable improvements to draw us back again. read more

the lobby is so dark and the floors are so warped iand the carpet is so worn .The stairs are poorly light as well. the floors in bedrooms are very slanted . the inn need a total water filter system. the sulfur smell is overwhelming although they did provide bottled water. porch and outside tables are lovely and complimentary breakfast is nice. there is no on site staff at. right and u cannot lock the main entrance . there was no cable access . Came here to escape the covid chaos of NYC with my bf for his birthday for a few days. The folks here much older than us, but the peace and quiet was all we really needed. Stan the boss man greeted us. He was really nice and hospitable, along with the rest of the staff. Our room was cozy and clean. Free wifi (slow-ish is there are a lot of people around). They had a good size fridge to fit our leftovers and drinks. The entire venue was really quaint and adorable. The food and beer at the restaurant were amazingggg. Make sure you make reservations for dinner! My favorite dessert was the rice pudding. We also had a hot breakfast included with our reservation which was really nice to wake up to everyday. During our trip we went hiking, kayaking, and checked out some breweries and wineries. All were less than half an hour away. We will definitely come back! read more

The Bavarian Manor was one of my favorite restaurants I this area. My wife and I went there for dinner tonight. Sadly, our dinner was amongst the worst restaurant meals we have ever had. The table when we sat down was covered with dried crumbs fro whomever had eaten there last. The waitstaff did their best, but everything was so disorganized they could not effectively do their jobs. My dinner came out; my wife's dinner arrived about half an hour later. The waitstaff said her dinner would be "right out"; it wasn't. I ordered sauerbraten. It was as dry, tough and had no real flavor. It was the worst sauerbraten I had ever tried to eat.The Spätzle and the red cabbage were ok. Mimi ordered schnitzel. It was ok; not great. For dessert we asked for Apple Strudel. It was over done and tasted as if it had come out of a package. We left half of our dinners on our plates and barely tasted our strudel and left most of it on the plate.I don't think I've ever left dessert on the plate before. When the staff asked how things were, I told them honestly that it wasn't very good. They just sort of stared at me for a second and walked away. Another staff person came up and asked. Again, I answered honestly and they walked away. They stopped coming to ask how our meal was. I've never written a restaurant review before, it this was so bad, and not inexpensive, that I felt compelled to do so now. Just had one of the best meals we have eaten out at a restaurant in years. We ordered potato pancakes of course which were great. I ordered the roasted herb crusted pork loin with brown gravy and homemade mashed potatoes possibly the best mashed potatoes i have eaten in a restaurant. My wife ordered the rouladen that came with spaetzle And red cabbage I think mine came with the saurkraut . For dessert I had the chocolate decadence flourless cake that was like a big awesome truffle. And my wife had the black forest cake which was pretty much incredible. Bavarian Manor is the place to go for special occasions in our family. We also go when we are just craving some great German food. We have dined as a party of two and as a party of twelve. The food is always wonderful, and the service is great too. We even stayed overnight once just so we could have a few extra German beers and not have to worry about our drive home. Their schnitzels are made with veal, which for us is the ONLY way to have it. We've had every schnitzel on the menu and have never been disappointed. The potato pancakes are delicious, the spaetzle is crave worthy, and their dessert specialty, patee sucree with berries and ice cream is amazing! If you're in the mood for great German cuisine and charming atmosphere, give the Bavarian Manor a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

This place needs to be shut down immediately! Mold on the walls and bathtub. The water doesn't work so you can't even shower or brush your teeth with the water. We had to buy our own water bottles to brush our teeth. Noone was there to greet us the entire trip. It's as if we stayed at an abandoned haunted hotel. The floors are not level. Our TV was broken and the manager never came. There was no breakfast served. There was mold on the walls. We were never made aware of the water issue they lied to us. When you ran the water it was brown not hot and smelled like rotten eggs. The air vents were covered in cob webs. The entire inn was extremely dark. They had the nerve to charge us $397 for a two night stay here. I have never stayed at a hotel where you cannot even shower. My girlfriend and I were going to leave or sleep in the car it was that bad. Clearly this place has the rating that it has due to the previous owner who passed away. She clearly kept up with the maintenence. The new owners should not be in the hotel/hospitality business. Awful. read more

Went here for the psychic reading and dinner. I have to say- I'm a disappointed. For the price you're asked to pay the food quality should be a million times better. Our dinner included: soup, salad, an entree and dessert. I was charged $0.75 for the blue cheese that came with the salad (how can you offer a salad but charge for the dressing?), the rolls were stale, the apple strudel dessert was soggy, and our waitress was really rude. We had a party of four who all wanted to pay separately and we were told it was not allowed. How is that even possible? Gratuity and tax were not included in the overall price of the dinner so it ended up being around $80 a person with tax and gratuity. For a mediocre meal and a 20 minute psychic reading I would expect A LOT better for $80 . Laurie was the psychic I chose to have a session with, and her reading was spot on- that is the ONLY reason this review is getting three stars. Me and my boyfriend went skiing for the weekend at hunter mountain and I wanted to find something other then what they had in the local town .. this was only 20 min from where we were staying and the drive was defiantly worth it ! We both started off with a stein of beer which was fantastic (I forget which brew I had) . For appetizer we had the potato pancakes and they were phenomenal, very crispy and fresh . For our main course I ordered the Weiner schnitzel that was cooked perfectly and he had the Jager schnitzel that was perfectly tender. We ended the course with the Apple strudel ala mode ! Our company has a warehouse quite nearby, so we decided to give the Bavarian Manor a try while in town on business. We're so glad we did! The owners are so nice and welcoming. The building is absolutely charming, with small but cosy rooms, homey accents and some with lake views. We stayed in the Turret Room, which is larger than most, and has a little table and chairs in the turret itself. So cool! We loved looking at the historic photos around the place, as well as some framed correspondence from long ago from former guests. We also really liked the collection of devil's fiddles in the dining room. Breakfast was delicious, and prepared to order. We didn't have a chance to try dinner there, as the dining room wasn't open during the days we stayed there. This location in the Catskills is a great jumping-off point for some lovely hikes in the mountains and to the nearby waterfall. I would imagine there's some decent skiing around in winter. read more

I've been to the Bavarian Manor twice now, once just for dinner and beer and once to stay. For the restaurant, the french onion soup is delicious. Easily the best item on the menu, and particularly delicious after hitting the slopes at Hunter Mountain or Windham nearby. The service is friendly and good, and the beer menu is limited, but features truly German beers, which is as expected. Between my two visits to the restaurant, I've had the Jaeger Schnitzel and the Pork Shank, as well as some of the other sides and appetizers. The food was tremendously underseasoned and underflavored, The sauerkraut was served lukewarm and had no actual acidity to it, and the cream sauce on my Jaeger Schnitzel left much to be desired. As for the pork shank - the consistency was great, but again, it was underseasoned and not very flavorful. It came with a side of spaetlze, which was overall soggy and spongy, not light and chewy as it should be. If you do stay a few nights, don't expect nice rooms or updated bathrooms. Yes, because it's upstate, the water will smell like sulfur. The decor is outdated, and our room was so cramped that we could barely walk around the bed. The included breakfast was filling and generous, made to order with choices of French toast, pancakes or eggs, coffee, juice, and delicious pastries. The average age of the other patrons is 50-ish, so perhaps because we were not taken seriously because of our age? (under 30). During our stay, we had several encounters with the owner/hostess where we were talked down to or made to feel as if we did something wrong, even though we were just inquiring about details we saw on the website and the loyalty rewards program. (Shouldn't you be happy we want to join the loyalty program?). I understand that our overall experience was probably not typical and was made unpleasant by one particular individual, but it was bad enough so that we will most likely not be back. read more

We just returned from having dinner here for the first time to celebrate my significant other's birthday after driving about 40 min. from Albany. We were impressed with the inn's atmosphere and our meals- I had the bratwurst dinner and my girlfriend had sauerbrauten and then we shared the dessert sampler plate. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. We felt that our waiter tried to avoid us throughout most of the time we were there e.g. never asking if we wanted more coffee or wine, checking to see if everything was alright and even with our check delivery. We noticed that others around us were receiving great attention from their servers. The experience seemed to spoil what should have been a happy occasion. We would be willing to give it another try and hope to be luckier to receive some warm and attentive service. read more

Discovered the manor in 2014 while checking out venues in the Catskills region. Since then it has remained our go-to spot while in the area. It remains a staple in the community and is family-owned. The rooms are cozy and each room has its unique decor. The staff is very friendly and always makes us feel welcome. Our family has since grown and we are so grateful they allow us guests to bring our pups. We hope to stay here for many years to come. read more

I was very disappointed with my last visit and because of that, I will probably never return or recommend this place to anyone. I had a reservation made for a birthday. (9 people total) Reservation was for 630. Around 4 we quickly stopped to drop balloons for the table. We requested one by the fireplace but that request wasn't granted. Anyways, my father arrived as early as 635 to let them know we were running behind but we're going to be there. The rest of the party arrived and were seated by 645. Me, my mother, and the 95 year old birthday girl didn't arrive until 7. The table had still not even been greeted!! Finally the owner got us started with at least a drink order by maybe 730? We weren't even offered bread. They were busy but still no waitress even came to let us know they would be with us. By 8 o'clock, after over an hour of being ignored by any waitstaff, who mind you, was rude when we would ask if someone would be over, we could no longer be ignored and we left. Terrible service. When we tried to explain why we were displeased we got told it was OUR fault for being late. I've been in the hospitality business for 10 years. There is no excuse for such poor service. (We went to Blackhead mountain lodge less than half an hour before they closed and received beyond phenomenal service by the way!) read more

I am not one to expand my taste palate beyond American food but I am sure glad I ventured out and I tried the authentic German food at the Bavarian Manor. The atmosphere is great and has German decor everywhere. It's a very cool building from the outside too with a large outdoor patio area. The service is friendly and welcoming and helps you understand the lesser known items on the menu. As for the food, I had the Brie appetizer which was just so yummy - it was wrapped in croissants and came with fruit. For dinner I had the Wiener schnitzel- fried veal with mashed potatoes. I think I'm a huge fan of German food now that I've had the Wiener schnitzel. I mean how could you not like fried veal?! We stayed at the hotel for the weekend while skiing at Windham ( which was 25 min away driving). The hotel is very cute and makes you feel like you are somewhere in German alps. Rooms were small but very nicely decorated and cozy. Everyone was friendly and nice. The restaurant downstairs is great too, it has variety of delicious German food and beer. As others mentioned already the bathrooms are quite small and old, but everything works. I would definitely recommend staying here. read more

Kind of hate starting my first Yelp experience on a negative note. But, I do feel like I need to share... Called this restaurant on Saturday afternoon to make reservations for my boyfriend's mother's birthday dinner. Made the reservation for 6pm, told them 4 adults and 3 children, 2 of which needed highchairs (14 mos old). Waitress was nice, new and inexperienced...totally understandable. Placed our drink order, guess we should've realized the first flag when the bartender came out and asked if my boyfriend wanted "Hendrick's and Tanqueray on the rocks?"..Ummm..What? Ok...not a big deal..Next..Food took forreevvveerrr...3 hours later. Course by course, fork by fork, knife by knife..HOLY B! Didn't make a stink, again, we were there relaxing being it was my first time in the area and we were celebrating a birthday. Finished off the meal with the owner approaching our table and shooing us to the lobby as the 14 mos old twins were getting antsy that we weren't getting our dessert or check. EXCUSE ME!? Did you really come to our table and SHOO US away because someone thought that their money had more value than ours? From one business owner to another..Poor choice of words. We held our 50th Wedding Anniversary dinner and weekend with about 20 relatives and friends at the Inn. The food was outstanding and the ability to gather and reminisce on the large wrap-around porch made the two evenings special. The proprietors gave everyone personalized assistance in figuring out what to do during the day in this beautiful part of New York. Wow! This restaurant was so good! My husband got wiener schnitzel and I chose jaeger schnitzel. Both were right around $20. The whole meal was amazing! I would highly recommend this restaurant. The grounds are nice, and it's also a B & B. Both dishes came with salad or soup (Pumpkin was the soup today) as well as saurekraut, and spaetzle (a pasta like side). Everything was delicious. If you're in the Catskills, this Bed and Breakfast would definitely come recommended. I'm recommending it as such--a place to stay the night and grab breakfast. A very large converted 19th century Victorian mansion with a lovely lake view, the rooms are small but very cozy, well furbished with a certain "homey" feel--lots of lace, pillows, cute blankets. Extremely clean. Clearly, this is a family establishment, with the owner very warmly welcoming you and making sure you are doing okay. Outside, relax in a number of rocking chairs, read, breathe in the clear air and pet their "house" kitten and dog. At nighttime, you can light the outdoor bonfire and toast marsh mellows. Oh, and you won't freeze at night because you control the heating in the room. The dining room is likewise beautifully decorated, with an old-timer serving as the waitress, you feel like extended family. The downsides: my room came with a coffee pot, but no electric outlet nearby. No garbage was in the room. 2. As a vegetarian, the menu is difficult to get by with, as it is a German establishment, everything is either sausage or flavored with bacon. The coffee is ghastly. 3. I think for what you get, it is overpriced. There is hardly anything "to do" around, so these were really more "resort" prices. read more

The restaurant is part of the bed and breakfast. The manor has a wrap around porch with lots of seating. There is a fire pit with seating for 8 or 10 in front. When you approach the property, there is a familiarity - it feels more like you are going to a friend's bbq than a restaurant. We ordered Brie with fruit as appetizer and the Rouladen and the German Wurst Platter as the main. First of all the portions are big. I believe that all main courses come with soup or salad. And I think they say on the menu that all mains also come with a starch and vegetables. The Rouladen was delicious but the beef was a bit dry for my taste. The Wurst Platter came with 3 Wursts. We are no German Wurst experts so it would have been helpful if the waiter identified the 3 Wursts upon presentation. Nevertheless, the service was attentive and excellent. We also tried two beers on tap - a weissbier and a marzen. We are not regular drinkers but found the beers to be flavorful and easy to down for those of us who are extremely occasional drinkers. The room that we stayed in quaint and comfortable. The information binder has a lot of great information. The most interesting section is the history of the Inn. As this is a bed and breakfast and not a chain hotel, the size of the TV and lack of Wi-Fi reception didn't bother us. There is Wi-Fi but depending on the location of your room, you may not get any bars. What was nice about the experience are the books and paintings that line the hall as you go to your room. It is charming and cozy. There are many outdoor activities in the area. Will definitely consider going back for winter actitivities. read more
