So I decided yesterday around 4:30 that it was too beautiful to stay home and cook. 75 degrees sunny and no humidity. So I wanted to eat in a place with a scenic outdoor dining experience. Bay House popped to mind so I called and sure enough they had outdoor seating 10 minutes later I'm being seated at a great table with a full view of the bay and Manhattan. Wow just perfect!! Mary Kate is my waitress and I order sparkling water. But then also ask for a glass of cab! Which is delicious. I'm seated right at the end of the deck so everyone climbing up the stairs greets me so nicely. Foe dinner I decide on chicken francese with mixed vegetables and a salad with oil and vinegar. It all comes so quickly and everything is delicious. The chicken is cooked to perfection and is wonderfully moist. The veggies again are so tasty. Just left the Bayhouse. We were a group of 13. Almost everyone ordered Burgers since it's their Monday night special. I don't eat burgers. On the menu they list salad with grilled chicken. I asked if they could make me a grilled chicken sandwich and the chef (?) said that they could not do it. Our group are regular customers. Next week we plan to go to Wharf. The waitstaff are great. If you have an important event you may not want to book @ Bayhouse. We invited 11 people for a special occasion on a Saturday in September...with 3 guests coming in from Texas. We booked approx. 5 weeks ahead. We called several times to confirm to make sure everything would be perfect. Two days before the luncheon Bayhouse cancels our reservations because they had accepted a bigger booking (post funeral)with more people attending. Bayhouse had no problem leaving us scrambling for another restaurant at the last minute. And I want to add, this is the 2nd time Bayhouse has done this. read more

So glad I finally got around to trying Bayhouse. After hearing so many great reviews. Came on a Friday night around 7:30 without reservations and I was worried there would be a wait. Nope there was plenty of tables outside available since it rained earlier. Service was not that attentive nor did they offer any insight to drinks or menu items. The food...outstanding! We shared the beet salad to start, I ordered the blackened mahi-mahi and hubby ordered the bbq ribs. I don't remember when the last time I finished everything on my plate. This was shocking to me as the mahi-mahi came with a caper basil butter sauce and I'm not too keen on basil but WOW I can still taste the flavors in my mouth. The ribs were so tender the meat fell off the bone. I wished they had more dessert options. Our server didn't even offer us dessert I overheard from another table. I've been here many times for music and drinks but never to have dinner. I was totally surprised by the superb quality of the food. Breezy point is out of the way and off the beaten path for most people but on a beautiful day/evening it's worth the trip. The location is immediately after the gate (this enclave is kept under tight control) You're given a token for gate entry , a paper for display on your windshield and something to hand your server. You must have a destination (restaurant ) in order to get past the gate. Anyway the location is stunning. It's on the bay , duh. You can walk along the back path or hang out on the sand. My seared (ahi) Tuna was amazing. A dollop of mashed potatoes and some kind of asparagus/ zucchini salad that was so tasty I had to stop myself from gobbling it down in 2 seconds. There's a spicy delicious sauce for the tuna but I had it with everything My friend got the pasta (Wednesday is pasta night) she also was pleasantly surprised by the quality, taste and professionalism. So when I come in for lunch and order a burger why am I charged full price and when I ask why I'm told it's only for Dinner time. Probably one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had the displeasure of taking my family to. This was a saturday night treat for my wife and two young children. It has a beautiful location and view, as well as friendly staff. The problem here is clearly poor management. I origionally viewed this establishment online to check menu and get the number to make a reservation. The number did not work (it was the correct number). We were seated shortly after we arrived which was great, however after reviewing the menu, it was not the same as the menu listed online which was updated the same day. No problem as i saw another item on the menu they provided at the restaurant that seemed to my liking. Would you guess that they did not have that item anymore either. The waitress assured me that i had the same problem as many others. That didnt help answer why my order came out wrong, our appetizer came after main courses or why we waited 30 minutes for just water. Fine, i found something i was not happy with but i settled for it anyway. The food took an hour and 15 minutes. The kids became completely uncontrollable after waiting so long and the food was average at best. Will never come here again. read more

Geez, what a find. Tucked away in a industrial area, this small house on the bay, had a beautiful view of the water, and more important, the planes coming in to JFK. The food was plentiful and fresh. We had the appetizer sampler with all your favorites - skins, fried mozzarella, wings. Plenty for the 5 of us. My filet of sole was hot and delicious, the sandwiches are huge and the pasta is great. This restaurant offers comfortable dining with great views. The owner John, is always genuinely concerned about his patrons experience. He might be seating you or jumping behind the bar if he thinks you've waited too long for a drink. Which by the way, isn't watery and the prices are very fair. The menu offers a sandwich option or two but offers more discerning options at excellent prices. The Pan seared Salmon was perfectly cooked and the chickpea salad with salsa was a welcome change from the usual vegetable with full mild flavor. The Mahi Mahi packed the perfect punch of heat in the jerk seasoning. I'm a little embarrassed about the french fries in the pic, but what can I say. My inner child ordered them. read more

Sitting "on top" of the bay watching the "sunset" roll way ... simply has to be experienced. The proces here are astronomical even for a New York restaurant. The food is sub par at best. The fries are frozen and reheated, appetizers aside from the mozzarella sticks are not as advertised. The shrimp tempura is 6 pieces served over reheated fries with a generic sweet chili sauce. I ordered the burger and the meat didn't look appetizing at all. The patty was thick and cooked well, the waitress never asked how I preferred it. The waitstaff is nice but inefficient and bad at communication. The kitchen was out of several key menu items. If the menu were larger, it wouldn't be much of an issue but there are less than 20 items in the entree section; less than 30 on the full menu. Overall, my expectations were not met. The prices did not fit the quality by any means, and despite a nice view of New York City across the bay, the atmosphere did not make up for it. I am disappointed. read more

First, the food was really good, though the menu feels somewhat slim. And apparently the bar menu differs slightly from the entrees. Wait staff was attentive and friendly...when they can hear you. The reason I'm giving this only 2 stars is the noise level from the live band on weekends. The place is small--there's no need for screaming into the microphones and having the speakers turned up to its loudest so that the wait staff can't hear you order. It's obvious the music is too loud as there's crazy earsplitting feedback from the instruments. But did anyone do anything about that? Turn down/off the speakers? Nope. We basically ate really fast and got out of there. Advice: if you're over 30 and don't want to feel like you're in some bar/night club scene, ask for a table outside. Or don't come during weekend evenings. read more

This restaurant has the worst location ever. It's a house off the bay, but getting to it is very very confusing. If you take a cab, make sure to get their phone number, because it will be hard for other cabbies to find you. The food on the other hand was plentiful. Pro tip - go on a Friday night, watch the sunset, eat dinner and then watch the Coney Island fireworks all from your table. The view is really gorgeous and there's sand for the kids to play on while you and your spouse actually enjoy a drink together. The service was good, they forgot to bring our entrees but was quickly rectified and we were given free dessert. The food is B+, but really you're going there for the ambiance and the view. What makes a place is atmosphere and character. Bayhouse is cozy tucked away on the shore if Breezy Point. This place is hard to find! It's located on the border of Queens and Five Towns, Nassau County near JFK Airport. It's on a dead end overlooking the water ( part of the Jamaica Bay? Not sure). Looks like it gets some of its business from the airport workers. somewhat of a dive bar/ restaurant. The food was pretty dam good though. My group had the appetizer sampler. It was a generous portion of wings, mozzarella sticks, zucchini sticks and potato skins. The serving was enough for four people. I had the steak sandwich. It was on garlic bread with melted mozzarella. The meat was excellent, not tough and cooked perfectly. My friend had the burger. This was a fresh hand formed burger that was cooked perfectly....nice and juicy. Definitely a nice place to stop if your in the area.....if you can find it. read more

Okay so I came across this place cause I was at the nearby beach Jacob riis beach.. to get here is like a maze. We just kept uturning because we couldn't find the location. You must go through security around bredford, and let them know you are going here to get a token to get into the community. When we finally arrived the waitresses were very nice and sweet. There is no menu for the drinks. But I think the bartender can whip you up just about any drink you know of. their menu is limited. I've tried their hamburger because nothing else really caught my appetite. The burger was good. What was better was my bf entree that I wanted for myself ! Mussels. $13 for appetizer, $17 for the entree (just comes with linguine for the extra $4) the sauce was delicious! White vine garlic sauce. By the way mussels is not on the menu they give you. The fish taco and ravioli was not quite the best. Oh and their crab cake was good. $11 for two patty of it. Because we were lost , we missed the sunset but seriously it's a nice view to eat in.. and can stroll on the sand. It's something out of the ordinary for new york city. Overall I give it 3 stars because not everyone in my group enjoyed their food. But everyone who ordered the mussels did :). read more

The Bayhouse has something for everyone! It reminds me of a Waterfront Cheers...very friendly, great food and a fun staff! The view of the City skyline, especially at sunset is the best in the Point. I have done two large Private Parties at the Bayhouse..I felt very comfortable. I like to add my own "touches", and was encouraged to feel free to do just that! Love the Bayhouse...even though I only go once a year. Every August a few friends of mine get together and we do our annual end of summer pub crawl. Bayhouse is along the route between Breezy Point and Rockaway Beach. This place is probably only known to the locals since it is in the coop community of Breezy Point and is not seen from the street. You need to drive down a long road to get to it. Like its name its simple...its on the bay in the shadow of the marine park bridge and its a big house...of beer and good food. The place is complete summer time getaway type of place with cold beers, good pub food (never had the actual lunch or dinner items) and a view to die for. You can walk onto the sand and then walk out on the long pier and enjoy views of the water. Great place to get away from the craziest that is New York and enjoy a quiet and booze filled good day. read more

From purely a location standpoint The Bayhouse has the formula to be an iconic casual water-front dining spot. Unfortunately it misses the mark in almost every major category. Prior to Hurricane Sandy they offered dinner year-round - sans the picturesque sunsets and upstart predominately college-aged female waitstaff, the offerings were a small step above pathetic. Frozen Tysen's chicken wings and stale discount rack burger buns made even the simplest "how can they possibly mess this up" order an adventure. That, coupled with a few no-name out of town female bartenders with Irish brogues and no inkling of what a buy-back is made the place an "avoid at all costs" location among 20 and 30 somethings who reside within the confines of Breezy Point. It could be said that the institution was pursuing an elder demographic but I am not quite sure my next of kin would appreciate the chewy calamari and downright inedible Fettuccine Alfredo that I became familiar with in my few visits. Let's be clear - this is an evaluation of the Bayhouse pre-Sandy. For the past three summers it has offered a temporary tent-type structure and a small menu amid a charming homemade wooden bar. Miraculously, the food has seen marginal improvement from it's days as an actual building with the chef seeming to only have a gas grill, microwave, and toaster oven at his disposal. That says all you need to know about the place when it pawned itself off as family restaurant. The lone bright spot of this haunt (and the bread winner in the family for my above listed 2-star rating) is the billing of frequent live music it offers. The entertainment is presented to its customers on an outdoor patio during the summer months in sight of Jamaica Bay's cavernous waterfront. Tip: Bring a small cooler and post up on the basketball court across the way from the Bayhouse's deck. It is the norm for small crowds to gather there with drink in hand and well within earshot of the facility sound system. If anyone asks, tell them you are protesting ownership's frugal mindset toward giving away a beer or two on the house. Hopefully the new restaurant (rebuild expected to be complete by spring 2016) will adhere to basic common sense by changing their menu to strictly pub food and oh, I don't know, do a good job of actually presenting it. Maybe they will develop a more diverse clientele and provide residents with a casual dining spot North of the Blarney but South of Kennedy's. read more

The food is simply terrible. Bread that tastes like something you'd bring on a 2 week long camping trip, odiously sweet supermarket salad dressing, frozen french fries... You get the drift. That said, if you're in the area, it's worth a stop - both because the Jamaica Bay beach-side location is stunning, and because you likely never got to experience apartheid-era South Africa first hand. Once was at night when a live band was playing, which was quite fun and the other time was on a Sunday afternoon for lunch outside on the deck.
