Martha and her folks have that home town pub feel. What a great bunch of people that come through this hometown bar. Martha had some home made chili and other goodies that made our afternoon happen. Visited last Saturday. Was immediately set upon by some drunk old codger at the bar about how the housing crisis, intrusive government and taxation was my fault. Bartender was concerned about my presence, asked if I'd ever been in before, claimed he didn't know me. Didn't like that I didn't play 20 questions well with him but finally fessed up he thought they'd just been visited by a couple undercover cops and I was the third. Indicated my Land's End Squall jacket pegged me as a narc. Coors in a bottle for $3 on a Saturday night was the only thing this place had going for it. Don't think I'll ever return. read more

If you are looking for a friendly bar this is the place to go. I stopped in on a Friday and they had karaoke going. Thought it would only have standard beers to drink but low a behold they have some local draft beers. Fell in love with Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout. If you like dark stouts this was delicious. A couple of those and I sang a few karaoke songs. Had a great time! read more

It's as cool as it is ugly... locals are pretty cool. Somebody always ends up buying the bar a round of drinks.

I went there Thursday 7/25/18 and been here before and it was cool little spot but this time I was there the bartender was absolutely rude! First off my friend and I walked in at 10:00pm which the bar closes at 11:00pm and we got attitude like "why are you coming in so late" when we walked in and sat down a friend of ours bought our first beers then I ordered 2 draft beers and handed the bartender $10 but my friend was not ready for hers so the bartender gave my $10 2 $5 bills and said I'll ring it up together when she's ready I said ok. So when my friend was ready for here beer I handed the bartender $5 because my friend took a $5 to play music. So I asked does $5 cover it the bartender said yes. So we then ordered 2 more drafts and my friend put it on her card when she got receipt to sign it was $10 so I asked do we have 2 more beers coming? She said no I said well I paid for the first 2 with cash and 2 on friends card she no I all the beers were on card I said I paid cash for first two she argued and then gave $5 out of her tips so I bet you'll be over by $5 at end of day. But after she was even more rude and then I went out to bathroom and the bartender locked me out I knocked for 5 minutes and my friend can and let me in. I will still go there but if I walk in and the same bartender is there I will not stay and I suggest people don go there on Wednesday nights or any night she works! read more

The Belle had advertised on Craigslist that they were having an "Open Mic" tonight. For those that don't know, that's an opportunity for musicians to come down and play in a "open" format. Mix and match musicians. I haven't played in a while, but I have over 40 years experience. Including playing professionally. I've even been at open mics where famous musicians show up."Open Mics" are supposed to be friendly get togethers. It is supposed to be FUN. Everyone gets to play. It is also a way for bars to get entertainment for FREE. The musicians , including the "host" band sometimes, are not paid. The bar however does a brisk business if it is advertised and the musicians have a good time and come back. The band hosting was not being paid. They passed a tip jar around. I am new to living in this area, but I know Highland isn't such a great neighborhood. It is a section of San Bernardino which is a dangerous place. Just last week someone was shot outside a bar and killed. It was on the news because his family had just lost another family member to a tragic accident.4 kids were left with out parents. The ad made it look like a friendly,clean place. So I thought maybe it wasn't one of "those" bars. Thought I would give it a chance. It was a mistake. Maybe it's been remodeled. Maybe there aren't any bikers. Long history or not,It's still a dive. The first thing I get is big lug asking "where are you from". I admit I gave him a smart-ass answer. Try introducing yourself, then ask me where I am from. Never did tell me his name. It was like "Who is this stranger coming in OUR bar?" I learned later from the guy leading the band that the bar has had run-ins with ABC ( the state alcohol authority in charge of bar licenses) over complaints from neighbors about the noise from bands.. That told me they were not licensed for entertainment. Maybe they thought I worked for the ABC. If I had, they would've been busted. While talking to the lead guy in the band named John,....he had just asked the audience if the vocals were good. But they are all his friends. He knows them by name.....I suggested the vocals couldn't be heard that well. That's a friendly offer from someone in the audience that is a musician. I have also run sound a million times. Happens all the time. The guy gets his feathers all ruffled and says "If you have a big ego than I suggest you don't come in here. I say, "Well I was hoping to play". He says bring your own equipment next time. The ad says just bring your own "axe". I did. I play bass. I told him I had my bass.He says someone else was playing now and I'd have to ask them. That's not what the ad said. It said to ask him. He was running the open mic. He was a rude insecure JERK. Not a good singer and not a good host. I am a new customer, try making me feel welcome. I have been to THOUSANDS of open mics in my life and never been treated so rudely. The ad made it sound like everyone was welcome. But I noticed he knew everyone that had played. That's not a open mic That's " I am only letting my friends play because I am insecure around anyone else. " Bottom line......if you are a stranger they won't even introduce themselves or ask you your name. They are suspicious of you. I had to introduce my self every time except one. The bartender had a vocabulary of 3 words. well, maybe 4. Not once did I hear a "Thank You" for a tip or a "Your Welcome" when I sad thank you. ( Except for the beautiful woman collecting tips for the band. SHE was very polite ) I was told by one patron that "People in this bar want to know if you are from Highland". Why? Why would anyone admit they are from Highland? ( which I am not) What's the point of advertising for "everyone to come on down and bring your friends" if you are just going to be an A**hole to them ? read more

I was at one time back in 1973 connected to the owners of the "Bell" Mr. Tom Vejio I believe thats how it was spelled, I worked with a lady named Jeannie and she tought me how to make burgers and pour a decent beer. A couple of years back, coming back to Ca. from a trip to Ok. I stopped with my daughter to show her the house and where her moma worked when she was a baby, I'm so proud to say she was quit impressed with what the bartender was telling her on the history of the bar, and yes baby girl it was all true and then some, and we had a great time, it was one big happy family, with some good heartly parting. thru the years i have often wonder what happen to my friends at the "Bell" maybe one of them will read this review and remember the Wonder of the one and only "The Bell", thanks for the good times..
