A few people asked that I write a review. So I will try to write something positive along with the negative. Many times I have come in. After a couple times being berated, even with rancor one time, then a third time... I decided to give it a break. Some regulars act too much like they are the owners, might I say self-absorbed and can act clickish. Maybe talk about themselves a little/way too much? (Shanda)... (anyway, told that it's all my imagination). It's a nice little bar. Nice patio. Good music. Clean restrooms. Even beautiful holiday decorations. Also they have pretty good beer prices and beer's kept amazingly cold! Bartender's "H", Kara, and Chauncy are wonderful. Sorry if I left anybody out that I don't see much. read more

Under Martha's expert tutelage, the historic Belle is the most recent iteration of the institution at 6917 Palm that has a long and storied past. I grew up 1.5 blocks away (27164 Pacific Ave) - and 6917 is dear to my heart - and part of my own history. And I am delighted that the creative Martha has steered the old place in the right direction - kudos to you, Martha. First visited there (at the "Orange Cafe") as a 3-year-old in 1941 - it was a classic family restaurant - with mini-juke-boxes at every table. Was with my Navy officer dad. Dad & I had lunch, he ordered a beer, I asked to sample it - it tasted horrible. Got home, told (somewhat straight-laced) Mom. She disapproved, Dad entered the doghouse. Somewhere in the Forties, "Fuzzy" Lawson took over the place. Fuzzy was a serious curmudgeon - he was usually grumpy. My next-door neighbor boys (Gene and John McNown) and I exacerbated his grumpiness - we often climbed up on the roof and ran back and forth noisily. Little pieces of the ceiling would fall out and drop on customers. About 1950 we apparently triggered Fuzzy's paranoia - there was a burglary - and he blamed us. (But we three little angels were innocent!). Fast forward to 1961 - I'm fresh out of the Army Security Agency. (Had been a Russian linguist eavesdropping on the Russians at the East German border). I have a tiny studio apartment upstairs in the old brick building across the street - above the old hardware store's location. At 6917 I run a tab, eat most of my meals there. Not long thereafter I start working at the old Highland Post Office just down the street. I deliver the mail for 6917 - and my mail-carrier posse and I hang out there every night after work. By now the food operation has started to shrink, in favor of more stress on the bar. Clientele typically includes agri-workers, citrus ranchers, students, bikers, etc. There's a long Shuffleboard along the south wall, and an old upright piano at the wall's westernmost end. Shortly thereafter 6917 becomes the Bella Highland, run by a genial gent named Steve. I'm now at Valley College working 3 part-time jobs. So early Sunday mornings I work at Winfield Bailey's newspaper agency on Highland Ave - rolling newspapers for delivery. Then I go to the Bella Highland to play janitor. Steve is generous - says "Mick - drink and snack as much as you want." So I take his advice. Well-oiled after a few hours of work and beers I sit down and bang on the piano for an hour or so when work is done. I buy and customize a mint-condition 1955 Pontiac Chieftan 2-door sedan - I drive it proudly for three months. Then, heading home from a party in Redlands, I drive it upside down on Boulder Avenue close to Base Line. The car is slowing down from 100 MPH - it rolls 3 times, mowing down 600 feet of highway perimeter fence. Despite having no seat belts, I walk away from the totaled vehicle with just a scratch on the hand - and I hitch-hike to the Bella Highland. Steve is working that night. Following Steve's advice I reluctantly call the cops. I report the accident - and they agree to meet me @ the cafe for an interview. Steve says "You gotta try to sober up before they get here" and starts pouring coffee down me. Two hours later - a cop arrives. I am sober by now, but I make the mistake of admitting I had "one" beer before I assaulted the highway fence. AAA cancels my insurance, but at least I'm not charged with a classic DUI. Will always appreciate Steve's fatherly support that night. I was 24 but still had a lot of growing up to do. Then seven years or so ago my son and I visit Highland and my old home at 27164 Pacific Avenue. The street looks so different - where have all the trees gone? We go to the Belle for a couple of beers. We meet the charming and energetic Martha, who totally captivates us. She and I swap stories. The nostalgic memories flood into my brain - I can feel tears lurking just behind my eyes. Back when I lived in Highland and hung out at 6917 I wish I had realized that those were "the good old days" - I might have savored them even more. The Belle (as this is the new, correct name of the place) is back, baby! Highland's oldest bar is back after a year-ish long hiatus. Located on Palm Avenue in Highland's Historical District, The Belle has existed in this spot for decades. For the longest time it was best classified as a "Dive Bar" or "Biker Bar"; and most of the previous Yelps reflect this.. The current owner, a lovely woman named Martha, has spent a lot of time and money refurbishing the place to give it a more friendly appeal whilst still giving a node to its "dive bar" roots. Dominating the center of the main room is a large U-Shaped bar that encourages social interaction and enjoyment. There are also tables and chairts here and there to provide ample seating. A big screen TV provides mostly sports programming and the bar offers free Wi-Fi. Martha herself is a very warm, welcoming person and can often be found behind the bar serving drinks and telling all kinds of interesting stories about The Belle's history. Their drink selection is pretty decent as well; all your favorites plus at least 2-4 Taps of Hangar 24 (Orange Wheat, Double IPA and usually a seasonal or two). They also offer wine and hard cider if beer is not your taste. The prices are also good for a bar. They have a cool internet jukebox with a large selection of songs, and an electronic Dart League that competes on Mondays. Its really great to see local businesses last awhile in this day and age of large corporate chains. The Belle has been around for a long time, and hopefully will continue to be. The crowd here tends to be a little older than at The Green Frog down the street - and that's fine. There are many bars out there where you'll meet the regular cavalcade of "Bro's and Bro-ho's". The Belle isn't one of them. Certainly worth a visit when you want a pint or two and some good conversation. read more

Felt like FAMILY on my first visit.... walked in with my hubby.... he wanted to watch football...guys scooted down voluntarily to make two seats together. The owner (Martha) immediately introduced herself and told us a poem about the bar. Juke box was cool. Its AMI...so I could use the app on my phone. Karaoke started in the evening and the host was so welcoming and nice. April and Jim were bartending and they couldn't have been more attentive and nice. I mean what do you really expect when the front of the building is boarded up?? It reminds me of a home that was converted into a bar?? IDK. it's about 500 square feet that includes a pool table , shuffle board and a bar. The Bar i would have to say, does have some potential, its pretty big. The few times i have gone I felt a little out of place. I think it is a motorcycle club hangout/ meet up place. Oh and if you cant find the bathrooms, they are out back yawnder~ in the back of the building / alley entrance. The beer is cheap though , cheapest in town and COLD~ coldest in town. One of the very few restaurants in Highland that is allowed to stay open until 2 a.m. For some reason any restaurant / bar established after a certain year (unknown) close time is 11 or 12 :(. P.S. The Belle is reopening today under new management. It will no longer be the dive bar from the past. Martha promises to have ball room dancing, live Bluegrass music, and a place for social gathering. The Bell is a cool place. Found out about it one day when driving around for work. Place looks like a tornando hit the front of it, but a bartender caught my eye when driving by and me and my work buddy decided to check it out. Place is rather cool inside. One pool table, lots of small screen tvs. The bar is nice and has a good beer selection (but not large). Beer is only 2.00 during the day. Cheapest beer in town! I've lived in Highland for years and never visited, even though I'd pass it often. Then one evening a friend took me here. Best decision ever. Everyone is friendly and their is such a variety of people. We had a blast during karaoke night. Martha is so sweet and greeted me with a hug my first (and every subsequent visit). Beautiful bar in the middle of Historical Downtown. The bar has historical theme consistent with the surroundings. It is extremely clean, we'll decorated, and the owner of the place is one of the sweetest owners I've ever met. I am an IPA guy, she had 7 different IPAs on tap when I got there so I was a happy camper. Definitely recommend this place! read more

If you're a fan of dive bars, this place needs to be on your bucket list. Martha (owner) could not have been more welcoming or kind to my wife and I from the moment we walked in the door. She introduced us to all the local regulars by name and made us feel right at home. Beer selection was great for such a small place and they even had a gluten-free beer for my wife that was excellent. There was even complimentary finger sandwiches and "Texas caviar" (basically black eyed peas with tomatoes in a spicy sauce-totally delicious) in a back room in case you got hungry. Can't wait to go back to this place. For dive bars, I've always been a fan of Taylor's in Redlands or the occasional pop-in to the Dirty Bird, but this place puts both of them to shame in terms of beer selection and hospitality.
