I was scrolling social media when I…read morehappened across an event at the Carlisle Theatre for a Halfway to St. Patty's Day concert featuring the Kilmaine Saints. I'd never even HEARD of the Kilmaine Saints, but apparently they've been around for 18 YEARS, which made me feel like I'd somehow missed an entire chapter of Central PA knowledge. I made a mental note that the concert might be fun, continued along with my life and figured I'd see how my Saturday adventures unfolded. Well, the Universe left me just enough time to make it work. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I hopped onto the Carlisle Theatre website, bought myself a $25 ticket for the 7:30 p.m. show and headed to Carlisle for a completely unplanned evening of Celtic rock. Purchasing my ticket online was incredibly simple, and I lucked out again when I arrived and found plenty of street parking right outside the theatre. On this particular Saturday evening, there was no circling blocks, no parking drama and no Responsible Adult Me wondering whether she'd misunderstood a parking sign. WINNING! I'd only been inside the Carlisle Theatre once before for a New Year's Eve celebration, so I was excited to actually experience a show there. The theatre has been part of downtown Carlisle since 1939 and continues to host concerts, films and live theatre, which is pretty darn cool when you think about how many old theatres haven't survived. Is the building showing its age? Absolutely! The theatre could definitely use some love and TLC. The seats, in particular, weren't especially comfortable and have clearly supported MANY generations of butts before mine. But for a couple hours? They did the job. More importantly, the theatre itself handled the concert really well. The sound was great, I had a good view of the stage and the historic setting gave the whole evening more personality than seeing the same show in some generic modern venue. The snack bar was also open, and although I resisted, the smell of fresh popcorn floating through the theatre was doing its absolute best to destroy my self-control. Staff throughout my visit were friendly and kind, and getting inside couldn't have been easier. I pulled up the ticket on my phone, they scanned it and BOOM. I was ready for my completely spontaneous Celtic rock adventure. And I'm really glad I went. There's something I love about having a historic little theatre right in downtown Carlisle where I can scroll past an event I've never heard of, spend $25 and suddenly have completely different plans for my Saturday night. That's exactly what community theatres like this SHOULD do. Give us somewhere to see something new, hear something different and occasionally say, "Sure, why NOT go to a Halfway to St. Patty's Day concert tonight?" The Carlisle Theatre may be showing its age, but there's still plenty of life happening inside it. I'll absolutely be back for another show. And apparently I need to start paying closer attention to their calendar because who knows what the heck I'll accidentally discover next!

And if live music, great service and locally traditional food is not enough, there are usually entertaining artwork and special candies for sale. The theater use to be the Rainbow Theater. They really did a transformation ( the old theater was nice too, great shows). You walk into the lobby and you see all the magical decor. They take you picture upon entrance. You can purchase the pictures later (high quality). There is a concession stand and a gift shop located in the lobby as well. There are ushers that escort you into the theater. The seats are assigned. They have seating for parties of 2 to 6. You have the option to have a dinner theater experience or just the show. You can purchase items from the concession stand to enjoy while you watch the show. We booked the premium package. The premium package included an aerial pour. You had a selection of sparkling juice or recently. It also included a special appetizer, a special smoke drink, and a special dessert. The presentation of everything was top-tier. I truly enjoyed the entire experience. I really didn't even know what to expect. The show was amazing. It had magical tricks. It had some comedy. It had some illusions. Ithad crowd participation. The show runs for about 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission. If you are planning a trip to Lancaster be sure to add this place to your list.

There are plenty of stalls in the ladies room, by far a joy in itself. But I took away one star, and probably should have taken more, because the sound system was not great. We saw On Your Feet last night and the music was very loud (to be expected) but the audio system did not allow for understanding the words. It was difficult to figure out what was going on, where they were, and details that you catch only in the dialogue. I asked the friends I was with if they were getting the dialogue and they said they were not. At intermission I spoke with a woman sitting in another section and when I asked her about it, she basically said, "Oh thank God, I thought I was the only one!" Plus, she couldn't understand the English it the Spanish! Many of the words in the song were also not discernible. Not that they weren't loud enough, they were. Just not distinct. It could have been a much better evening had I been able to hear and understand the words that were being said. I think 4 is generous but I wish it would have been 5 stars. By the way, this is in no way a critique of the show. I thought the acting and music were excellent. Just wish I'd understood the dialogue and words in songs. That said, I'll be looking toward other venues in the area for theater. Dialogue needs to be understood.
