The food here has been going downhill for a while. The bloody Mary's are great but my last burger was ordered medium and came like a hockey puck. Their gluten free buns are awful and dry. Amazing how you can get a far superior burger at Burger Lounge but spend a fortune on a burger here that is pretty awful. I could barely choke it down. Amazingly disappointing. Got a crab sandwich BLT, short rib Mac n cheese, and the steak on crostini. Crab sandwich is soaked with thousand island, sweet relish, and despite what they tell you, canned crab. Mac n cheese was what brought this to a two star rating because the short rib was pretty good. I had never really wanted to try this place because I am not a beer person at all. A friend who lives a bit away wanted to go here so as they were driving to me, I went with their choice. I am glad I did. We both had cocktails that were decent and not crazy expensive at all. My friend had the grilled fish sandwich, which I tasted. I thought it was very nice and I would try my own next time. Only tip with this dish is tell the server light mayo because the sandwich was very mayo heavy. I got the beef nachos which are served in a bowl. The meat was very tasty, tender and plentiful. The only issue was, for some reason, there was a lot liquid pooling at the bottom of the bowl- not good with a chip centered dish. I showed the server and he gave me another bowl to transfer the nachos to, that did the trick, and he comped my meal. Can't ask for anything more. Excellent and smart service. The music was good too. Located in the heart of Encinitas near many shops, coffee and food. Very close to the beach and parking. Wednesdays they have happy hour all day long. This place is kinda like me. It sounds German, but it's not really German. Was a little surprised to see the menu didn't have a single bratwurst on it, but an excellent array of California coastal cuisine and a top notch server was more than compensation enough to get behind the Bier Garden. We shared some Kung Pao Calamari and Baja Fish Tacos both of which were tasty and pretty decent sized portions. Washed down with a house margarita and a seasonal, cider-Moscow mule, and we were fully satisfied even without any sausage. What really stands out at this place though is the bloody Mary selection. There's a whole section of the menu dedicated to them, and when they come it out's like the day-drink version of ordering fajitas where everyone kind of ooo's and aah's. Overall I'm a pretty big fan of what this place brings to the table and now that we're locals can see myself being somewhat of a regular. read more

I want to preface my comments by pointing out that this is a really nice space. Well-placed along the 101, with a casual upscale flavor to it, The Bier Garten has great potential as a watering hole. They also seem to possess a very good choice of local beers, which is also to be applauded, although there are any of a number of outlets in Encinitas that boast similarly wide varieties of local microbrews. Sadly, having said that, there is very little to recommend this place. At the heart of most of the problems lies the staff. Although pretty to look at, they in almost every single way fail to show either attention to their customers or their own duties. This is not limited strictly to one individual. At my first (and last) outing here, no fewer than four different staff members attended my friend and me. The service ranged from indifferent to incompetent. Let us begin with a venue that easily holds 75 people having perhaps 20 in it at the time. One would expect something approaching solicitous attention. No. There were three individuals behind the bar, literally no farther than five feet assiduously avoiding us. This included eye contact and the raising of hands, which all saw and failed to acknowledge. Finally, after clearing my throat loudly and saying excuse me did they deign to come over. We were then told by a pretty, grinning waitress that it was happy hour and that drinks and bar food would be half off. Both my friend and I heard this quite distinctly. Neither of us were keen on beer, but they had several wines by the glass. We ordered a Mondavi and then later an Avalon--at $11 a glass each. Both were less than stellar (I left my Avalon unfinished), so we asked the bartender what he recommended. He prefaced his suggestion with "people seem to really like." That is a warning sign. I admit I interrupted him and asked him "What do YOU recommend?" It became clear he had no understanding of the wine selections when he failed to answer; I guess his forte is the brew. This shows a real failure of management: buying the cheapest wines available to serve at a premium cost and hiring staff whose familiarity with even fairly basic offerings is poor. As the afternoon continued, we also ordered some bar food. After an hour, we asked where it was--turned out the waitress had failed to put the order in. The food did come out fairly quickly after that--steak crostini, which were alright but overly saturated with balsamic sauce. Finally, the pièce-de-la-résistance: the bill. Instead of half off during happy hour, it was $2 off of happy hour. At this point, my friend lost it and related to them in no uncertain terms about what we had been told. They hemmed and hawed and finally took a few dollars more off the bill. We paid and left. This sort of service might be expected (on occasion!) on a crowded summer day. This was a rainy winter afternoon with a place less that 1/3 full. I see that Whole Foods is now closing. Let's hope Bier Garten is not far behind. read more

Also the manager Luis introduced himself to us to make sure everything was tasting good and after chatting, he found out it was just my birthday and sent over a dessert! Had lunch here over the weekend. Really enjoyed the brisket dip. The sandwich was moist and the Onion Rings were SO crisp. Their craft cocktails were also delicious- I tried one of their signature cocktails and wasn't disappointed. Although they were busy- we were seated right away and our server was great! Decent gastropub located in Encinitas. Inside there are many different options for seating including a patio, the bar, the bar area tables. They also have a few tvs if interested in the game but clearly not a sports bar. Food options include basic grub fare, burgers, tacos and such. I went with the fish tacos. I know you guys lost money during closures but you've now doubled your capacity and somehow had funds to make the bar fancier and tile the walls. Rude bartender, pretty good food, excellent beer choice, but I feel genuinely sad from my experience today. I walked up to the hostess who was super nice and asked if I could sit at the bar, she replied warmly with a "of course" I then proceeded to sit at the bar where there was a stack of menus right in front of me, I grabbed one assuming this would help the bartender in some way trying to prep myself and be ready for when the bartender would ask what I would want. I didn't see the beer options in the menu (probably cause I had skipped a page) and had assumed maybe because there were so many taps they probably print a separate beer menu due to rotating taps. When the bartender asked me "what I'd like to drink?" I replied "do you happen to have a separate beer menu? I didn't see the options in here" to which she promptly responded in an extremely demeaning tone "they are in that big brown book your have right in front of you!" And turned around immediately to ignore me. I've worked 8 years as a server, bartender, dishwasher, host, restaurant manager, chef, dam near every position and I've never felt so violated by a comment in my life. I got up and left, despite really wanting to eat there I didn't feel welcome at all, and I didn't want this person to have my tip money that would have happily given to her. Ordered hamburgers and beverage. We were asked how we wanted our burgers cooked, ordered MR, were delivered well done and tiny dry burgers, for $20 a burger, had a higher expectation. Server did not check on us. When our food was delivered we were not asked if we wanted anything else, server quickly walked away, tried to get her attention but she was not paying any attention. We came for appetizers and drinks yesterday , we had nachos, cauliflower, fries and onion rings, and 2 out of 3 of us had a drink (1 beer and 1 seltzer) that's it ... nothing else. And when we were ready to go we asked for the check which the waitress just read us our total off her hand held device didn't hand us a bill or anything and it was $133 .... According to the menu prices it should have been half that price for everything we got. Either we got scammed or your additional fees are ridiculous and not worth it. While in the beautiful backdrop of Encinitas we decided to bicycle to this Biergarten. The wait was 15 min, the kind and welcoming hostesses made it easy to be texted when ready and made it known we could have drinks while waiting - can you ask for more? Well, they upped their game still, the service was unbelievably thorough and enthusiastic and speedy. Karalyn, our server, was great, and a big part of what we ordered. Could it get better? YES. Oh so good!!! Sorry I forgot to take a pic. We had the Short Rib Nachos and wow the flavor. Yes it was cheese sauce but they didn't get soggy. We were with a big group and ordered our own entrees. I got a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and my Boo got Fish & Chips. The sandwich was awesome and it came with yummy seasoned fries. The Fish & Chips were the BEST I'VE EVER HAD. this review isn't a reflection on my experience, just wasn't a fan of the food. got the fish and chips and my gf of the ribs. fish n chips were heavily breaded and not your traditional breading so I was a little off put. the fish itself was good but I did have to take a lot of the breading off. chips were very good though. the ribs were also not our cup of tea but not bad. it is a really cool spot and nice interior if you're looking for a place to chill and maybe watch games. the servers were also all really nice. read more

We love it here. Great patio and love the outdoor/indoor dining options depending on what vibe you want. Super fun in summer. The only thing I would say is the food is not consistent. Great spot in Encinitas. Pretty classic American gastropub food. We have been in for drinks many times but finally had their food for brunch. I had the Nashville fried chicken. I think it needed a little more heat but the portion size was perfect and it was delicious. Service is friendly quick attentive. I went early-dinner on a weekday and it wasn't packed but still a good amount of people. I can imagine it gets pretty crazy during peak hours. They have rotating specials (or deals?) which all looked good so check those out. When I was there it was margaritas which were fairly good and surprisingly strong especially since so many restaurants seem to go the opposite way. The atmosphere is really nice, we sat outside and it was not too loud. The servers were all very friendly and helpful. The menu looked great. It was such a hard to decision to pick a burger but I was not at all disappointed with the BG burger. If you like blue cheese it's a no-brainer. The mac and cheese also looks great and they make it with local belching beaver milk stout. Overall a I will be back to try more of the menu. read more
