I used to think cycling was for hipsters and for people, like my parents, who were going through their midlife crises. With the force of voodoo and black magic, my hipcrisis parents got me on a mountain bike, then I rented a road bike, and one fateful day I walked into the Bike Coop to pick up a beautiful road bike to call my own. The Bike Coop is kind of like Mary Poppins bag, or spoon full of medicine, the shop will either magically have the perfect bike for you, in your size, patiently waiting for you, or it won't. I don't know if they have Houdini working in the back, but that shop is down right magic. Now, I'm not saying they don't carry product, because they do. They've got all your bike needs, but their bike stock is more limited to commuters, accessories, and the bike maintenance. Like I said though, it's a magic shop. Furthermore, Greg is like Mr. Miyagi. When you ask him a question he gets a look in his eye that makes it seem like he knew the question was coming and had been preparing an answer for a week. He's quiet, methodical, and has purpose when he performs his fittings or when he sells a bike. I can't quite put my finger on Greg's magic, but let me put it this way, if someone started a cult and he was the spiritual leader I would join. He is just real. The rest of the guys at the shop are incredible. They have the knowledge, the work ethic, and the attitude to turn any bad bike day into a good day. They'll teach you bike maintenance if you want to learn, they'll give you pointers, and they'll always greet you with the warmest happiest smiles. read more

All I can say is rude! I arrived early for a flat repair and waited in the parking lot. They don't open until noon on Sunday? It's a little odd for a bike shop if you ask me. I still don't understand the cost breakdown, What I was quoted is different than what's on the board and what I paid is different than both? This is a husband and wife team it appears they sounded like they're trying to purchase the shop. While waiting for my repair to be done inside which took longer than expected is there was a mixup with a couple of tubes. I asked the potential new shop owners if my car was going to be OK in a parking lot or if I would get a ticket? The husband suggested I park against the wall I went outside parked my car and came back. Upon Entering the store I walked in and held the door open for a gentleman behind me with a bicycle when I was rudely told I needed to wait outside only one person allowed in the store due to Covid! Are you talking to me? I've been there a half hour before the shop opened I was originally going to go to the little bike shop on Central but I called, he was closed and actually recommended High Desert Bicycles and the bike co-op second. I mentioned the reference and she replied "he buys all of their parts from us". Really then why was high desert bicycles the first store suggested? The man there was nice and friendly gave my dog a treat and gave me a trail map but I certainly wouldn't want to put up with the other lady she's got quite an attitude. It's also a little pricey being right on Central too many other competitors out there for me to put up with a rude proprietor. read more

Worst customer service I have ever received. I have frequently visited this shop over the years and have never had any experience like I did recently. Amanda (apparent ex-professional downhill biker) "helped" me and was so rude and arrogant I was practically speechless. I assumed this was a new employee until she proceeded to tell me that she was the future owner! I wont be back if that is the case. Shame that they condone this type of behavior, this use to be a nice shop. Check out the social media posts below, apparently this is how The Bike Coop (or at least Amanda) feels about their customers. If you are white, male, or part of the bike industry, watch out! She immediately took me to a lineup of bikes starting at $1000 and up to $3999. When I told her that that was way way outside my price range. She told me, this isn't the place for you! Had a bike in rough shape I was trying to get tuned up for a commute. Went to two bike shops in ABQ, they did some work, charged me a lot, but I kept having problems with it every time I would ride. Was ready to give up and buy a new one when Andrew from the bike coop (I think that was his name? Definitely started with A sorry if I got that wrong) recommended I give repairing the old one another go. He really took the time to diagnose some issues, i got it back yesterday and wow! It's riding the best it has since I first got it! My commute today was a breeze thanks to him! Will definitely be back if I have future problems. I called the shop and asked if they would be able to change the tires on an old bike that had been sitting in my garage. The rubber on the tires was cracking and the rim tape was literally falling out of the tire so I knew the tires would need to be replaced. When I got to the shop I spoke with Josh who assessed my bike and assured me that the rim tape would be replaced and that at least one new tire would be put on my bike. I left the shop feeling confident that I would be able to ride my bike in a few days. I got a call two days later that my bike was ready and that none of the tires needed to be replaced. While I was skeptical, I trusted that the people at the shop knew more than me and that I wouldn't have any more problems. As soon as I left the shop I felt that the tires were low but I assumed that the bike had just been sitting in the shop for a few days and just needed to be pumped up. Three days later, when I went to ride to school, I could hear a hissing sound from the valve in back tire. The bike was unrideable and I ended up having a miserable day trying to find a way to get to and from school. I ended up going to the REI bike shop to get my bike tires fixed and was shocked when the mechanic showed me the dry rot on the inner tube and that they hadn't even replaced the rim tape on one of the tires. I would really like to believe that I didn't get screwed over on purpose, but I went through a lot of time, energy, tears, and money trying to find a way to get to school when I didn't have a bike. read more

Great shop. I flew my bike to NM from New York and Ryan adjusted my bike perfectly before a bike packing trip. After the trip, another gentlemen made some minor repairs. Came in here to have my bike examined because it clicked a lot when peddling and you could tell something was wrong with it. The technicians said it just needed a tune-up and that was it. Fast-forward to several months later and the chain just stopped. Which means the rear wheel stopped turning as well. Took it back in and you could tell the technician didn't want to admit that he screwed up the first time. Fixed the chain and put in a new gear shift knob. We'll see how long this lasts. I recommend the Esperanza Bike Center out west by the Biopark instead. Free fixes. read more

Great shop! I came in from out of town with an emergency spoke repair needed on my Mavic wheel (not the easiest to service). I had the spokes, but finding the correct spoke wrench was next to impossible. Rod got me right in and took care of it with friendly professionalism. I was in and out under fifteen minutes and a very minimal fee for the service. While the repair was being done, I learned a lot about Albuquerque's bicycling routes and cycling community through chatting with their very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I took two of my bikes in to be looked at because I was having trouble pumping the tires and had some questions. I was immediately acknowledged, and all my issues were addressed. I didn't feel like I have felt in other bike shops where the people made me feel like I was completely ignorant about my bike. I learned a lot, I was treated well, and I got great service! We are blessed to have many good bike shops in 'Burque, but the Bike Coop is the best. Not the cheapest, not the fastest but if you want the best mechanics and superb service, it's the Coop all the way. Amanda is the new owner. She's brought in some new lines and re-organized the whole place. It's a small shop but is welcoming and they still specialize in a lot of hard to find parts. Rod is a master mechanic. He really knows his stuff and takes great care in providing AWESOME service. I was recently reminded of this when I brought in a high end bike purchased as a frame from another shop. Their mechanics tried to set up the components properly but lacked the experience and the right tools to get the job done. Rod went through it and got everything dialed in beautifully. Sure, larger shops may carry more lines and stock more bikes but in terms of quality of service and expertise, the Coop is bar none, the best. read more

I've read plenty of reviews about bike shops that suggest that they're run by a bunch of snobs with little patience for amateur bicyclists and/or any person that doesn't have at least one of the following: a nose ring, ear plug (I think that's what they're called), tattoos, a flannel, or one of the French flip-brim bicyclist caps. Thankfully, I didn't find The Bike Coop to be like these other shops, because I know very little about bikes---considering I'd gone about 15 years without riding one!---and went in asking some real dumb questions. "So explain to me how a Presta valve works?". Yeah, that was me. "What size tube do I need for an XL bike?" Yup, me too. The dumb questions went on and on, almost as if I was testing that old cliche, "There's no such thing as a dumb question." But the employee that helped me here was entirely patient, seemed truly intent on helping me out and ultimately got me the right tube while explaining how my old tube had gotten a puncture. He wasn't the least bit condescending during the whole interaction. In fact, I'll even go out on a limb and say this gentleman was quite friendly. It really threw me for a curve, but life can do that sometimes. Anyways, the prices here aren't as cheap as Wal-Mart or Amazon, but neither of those titans could match this service. Plus neither is local! So show some support, dang gommit. read more

When I did get help, it was for of an inconvenience for the staff. No sense of urgency to ring me up for the items I wanted to buy, I told the staff Cant wait any longer and left. This is a good store if you don't plan to do anything too sophisticated or high-end. I think it's probably best for the student crowd and commuters. The store is crowded with stuff that seems priced a bit high for what it is and the salespeople are not engaging. Personally, I like a bike shop that is willing to chat me up and help me learn stuff as opposed to just selling to me. Another problem I have is that the workshop area is in the back where you really can't have a good look unless you ask and then brave the clutter. Finally, their follow-through is a bit lacking: I had them order a fork for me for a MTB but they managed to get the wrong color although I was specific. Oh well. Like I said, good for the students maybe, but I prefer more selection, engagement, and professionalism from the bike shops I frequent. read more

This shop recently relocated away from Central, now on Yale just north of Silver. I shopped there for the first time last week and it was a terrific experience. I wanted a bag or pack that could transport my laptop attached to my bike. Immediately upon entering (well, I looked around for a moment) a friendly employee was on my case--no pun intended. He was cool. Instead of leading me to their newest products he went straight for the clearance rack and pulled out a shoulder bag that easily mounts to a carrier on the rear of my cycle. Half off 50 bucks, I was sold. I'm loving the purchase. While I was there I mentioned that I needed another small plastic part that was missing from another bike, and the guy accessed his shelves of small parts, handing me a slightly more modern accessory to the one I'd lost. No charge. I promised him I'd keep coming back. This is a small shop with a limited but sensibly-priced variety of urban bikes, hipster rides to do the city with style and ease. I dig that they're not big on bikes that run the cost of a used Subaru, which you'll find in most independent places these days. This isn't to say they don't feature them or they can't order what you want--they can--but the focus is on the urban traveler who's looking for a sturdy, long-lasting and dependable ride. Good call, Bike Coop. I'll spend my local dollars on your treads any time. read more

Amanda has taken the regins from Greg and steers cycling life from the Coops perspective, into soft cloud like bliss. This is not a store, but a community hub. If you want your dollar to mean something, to feel like a purchase is not just buying a product, but instead an investment into a community and a lifestyle then shop here, and fuck Dick's. Just the kind of place you want to go if you are a bicycle enthusiast and need a little extra advice or help and/or you wannt someone to b.s. about bike theory. Everytime I go into the shop they are more than helpful in finding an awkward part and the technical tips on how to resolve your situation. I specifically recommend them for wheel building. Each mediocre commuter Alex wheels I had built there have stayed true regardless of what I've thrown at them... better than other recommended shops in town. Great builders. What I don't particularly care for is the sorta pervasive attitude that Mavic stuff is the end-all be-all to everything. Though they DO make great stuff, not everyone has the bucks to drop $110 on a rim when that's how much it'll cost to have an entire wheel built otherwise. I raced bikes in this town for about ten years. I eventually made it to cat. 1. This shop is more expensive than any shop I've ever visited - anywhere in the United States. They never support local racing, and once charged me $135 for a tuneup. I had Dura-Ace, that stuff is not hard to work on. They might have high rent because they are in Nob Hill. Rob Mion can build wheels, he built one of my favorite wheelsets ever. I got them third hand. I could never afford anything to do with this shop. Swinton is just as good - he is at another shop in town. Once had the owner tell me that I needed the heaviest tubes and tires on my racing wheels, because of goat heads. I ran the system, but not during a race, I was never that strong I guess. Lots of people love this shop, I have no idea why. Mostly mediocre mechanics, sky high prices, doesn't support the local racing community (no, pro-deal doesn't count). Shops in Boulder are cheaper than this place - that is really saying something. read more

I chose The Bike Coop after talking to people and reading up on their shop. I'd been out of cycling for quite a while and wasnt at all familiar with newer tech etc.. DJ, the bike tech I started my conversation, with was more than helpful with advice about how to update my old school bike. He walked me through what was useable and what needed upgraded, he also went above and beyond to not only get me the best upgrades but also at a affordable price. His attention to detail was especially appreciated since I dont live in Albuquerque and had to plan the services. This is a rider owned shop for riders, not a shiny pretentious mass produced "me too" type shop... if you are looking for a spandex wearing tech with a Italian accent, this isnt the place for you. But if you want good service and knowledgeable techs who will take care of your bike check this place out. read more

Great guys. They were recommended by a competing bike shop (2 Wheel drive, moving to a new location at the time). I came in to get tubes replaced and the technician gave it a quick look over and adjusted a few things he thought needed work for free. He told me my tires looked low on tread, but wasn't the typical pushy salesman who recommended replacement immediately. He told me they would probably last well into the summer and recommended that I stop in at the end of the season. Now that's how you retain a customer. read more
