For many years, our family has continued to visit this black dog café location for really great breakfast options and has never been disappointed. We love the relaxed atmosphere and delicious food, and our children have always enjoyed dining at the outdoor tables on a lovely, warm summer morning. Since their renovation, we have noticed a few changes! It was really exciting to see how the café has been able to expand, and I'm sure it will be able to cater to additional clients with the addition of a larger bar set up with plentiful stools, while not sacrificing indoor seating. Although the pastry case looked smaller, the ordering setup for food and coffee was pretty nicely designed. The food items we ordered were delicious, from the avocado toast to lox on a bagel, and the coffee was fine. Our frustration came with a lack of respectful service. As a group of three black women with one teenage girl, we were met with lackluster service at the counter from the second we walked up to place our order. Although there were other larger groups ahead of us, our order somehow frustrated the cashier, and after us. When we had straightforward items to order, upon asking if everything was okay, she shared that we had caught her off guard by ordering for four people all at once. I can't imagine this isn't the norm with the number of families and groups that come into the establishment regularly. Still, we were 'disrupting her,' and it seemed to be an inconvenience to the point that some items from our order were never brought out, and a few mistakes were made on the order. Furthermore, upon her bringing some of the dishes to the table, we did not appreciate her demeanor; it was just shy of flinging the plates onto the table at us. It was an inferior example of the service environment we are used to at this location. The negativity from this interaction has tarnished this experience for us, and I can't say I will return. The cashier/server's demeanor was rough, abrasive, and straight-up rude. I hope they can find opportunities to improve because the food is usually spot on. read more

A steady option for semi-regular island dining out. The Black Dog also has possibly the most generous frequent dining program on the island, and points are also accumulated at the Tavern, which is worth keeping in mind and then leads to lasting benefit at the Cafe. I'm not really a fan of the way they renovated this place two years ago in terms of adding the bar, but it has settled in well and the flow of ordering is more effective than before. Ordering ahead (online) is recommended at peak times and although there have sometimes been problems, it's generally worked well for me. Though I tend to have a few quick things and/or the same thing when I come here, it's worth remembering taste and quality, especially for entrees, is somewhat above what you might expect for a "touristy" place. I have lived on MV for 15 years, and every Black Dog on the island has been going downhill since I have been here. They have never gotten my order right. A few examples: they forgot the turkey on the Turkey club, I paid extra for truffle fries and they gave me chips, I ordered 5 sandwiches to go and I got home to realize there were only 4 in the bag. This happens every single time I decide to give them another chance. We have lived on the island for many years. One of our go-to places has been Black Dog Bakery on State Road. During Covid it was the best. Today though has changed my opinion. On July 1st I got a small cake for my husband's birthday for $30. Today, July 16th I wanted to get the same size cake for my daughter's birthday. It was $60. I was told their prices just went up! I can guarantee if you go to this adorable cafe, you will definitely see and even be able to pet some cute dogs. My friend and I decided to try out Black Dog Bakery and Cafe as big fans of the clothing brand and of coffee. We are both Celiac so we didn't get any food, but our coffees were really good and well made. I believe it helped that we went so early in the day too, literally right at opening. Quite strange that we don't have a review for this Black Dog since we've been to it a bazillion times and have a vague memory of writing a 2-star review of it in the past. Anyway, to add to the average 2.7 stars chorus: this place sucks! We love the tavern next door (only in the off season) and will begrudgingly get our pre-ferry coffee and treats from here when we don't want to wait to get to Pie in the Sky across the water. But we are officially done after our last experience. Byyyye girl! Service: staff literally yelling at each other. Saw them rolling eyes at other customers. Takes forever...do NOT order if you're close on time for your ferry. Coffee: in the immortal words of Pete Wells, it tastes and looks like bong water. So gross! Pastries: 100% thawed from FTO situation. The spinach feta croissant was like eating melted soggy butter bread. The blueberry muffin tasted like it had lived nine lives before it got in the pastry case, and the coffee cake muffin was like cardboard+sugar. Anyway, feels good to update and part ways with this money pit that is only still in business due to its excellent real estate. If I had ordered a slice of plain, dry bread, I might've actually enjoyed it more than the so-called chocolate sprinkle donut I received. There was absolutely no chocolate none, not even a trace and instead the nimrod behind the counter panicked and dumped an entire bottle of sprinkles on top to cover up how flavorless and dense the donut was. It was thick, dry, and closer in texture to a dinner roll than a dessert. And to top that all off they brought out 2 sides of tatter totes even though I asked for 3 so the dude taking my order was daydreaming about a girl he will never get cause he could have been......... donut 0.7/10 because I didn't die while eating it, hash browns 4/10, and the guy working there was a -10/10. read more

Extremely disappointed with black dog. I was so excited to try out this cafe after seeing their patio and menu online. Unfortunately when we got there the server was very abrasive. A person in my group has a nut allergy. When I asked if there were nuts in the muffins she responded shortly "I'd assume so". So I reiterated the question asking if there were any nuts in the muffin we were interested in (corn muffin). The cashier with the pink hair proceeded to give me a deadpan look and said "as I already said, Id assume so". Most places on this island I've found have been very careful with allergies and have had the decency to check with the kitchen. She checked her nails.... What brought my rating up to 2 stars was a person in my group said the double chocolate cookie was one of the best cookies she has had. Just returned from the Black Dog. What a disappointment! Two kids with me, we were here on Monday. I had the best ceasar salad I have ever tasted. So much so I went back today! We went with a group from work on Tuesday night , august17th. The service is some of the friendliest on the island. We ordered the chowder as I had to have clam chowder if I was at the Black Dog Cafe. It didn't disappoint. Most chowders come out like wallpaper paste die to a huge amount of roux added. Not the case here... The chowders was flavorful and had such a nice consistency. It was addictive and I now want it again. Me and a co-worker then ordered the salmon, and it came out beautifully cooked with some tasty mashed potatoes. One note to the kitchen, there was a lot of juice/ water/pan juice/ mystery liquid on the plate which made the potato mash super wet. Where the meal fell flat was with the kitchen's treatment of the vegetable sides. The salmon came with crispy Brussels sprouts. Yum, right? Nope. They were over fried till they were black and bitter. I couldn't tell I was eating Brussel sprouts. For those that hate veggies, it might be fine, but I like my veggies. We sent those back and asked for some spinach that one of my friends got with their garlic crusted cod fish. We got the spinach. Half of it was raw and half was cooked. It was weird. So we did not eat that either. However, Our waitress was really awesome. She was professional and cared for our needs so well. She apologized and brought us out blueberry pie (which was very very good). In a town of tourists that may not come back. This waitress cared enough to make us feel happy and that our business was important to her and the restaurant. I have to say, I didn't get that feeling at many places on the island. Most made us feel that they wanted us to pay and leave and if we didn't like things, who really cared? The next ferry would be bringing a fresh crop of diners. The Black Dog made us feel like we were valued and If they were having staffing issues, like many other places, they didn't let us know. They tried to make our experience as warm and welcoming as possible. If we return to MV, you can bet I will be returning and recommending the Black Dog Cafe. My friends raved as we visited the island with them that this is "the best" bread! And their sliced white is pretty fresh and tasty! I ate a lot of it this past weekend and even took 2 loaves home! We stopped in for lunch on a Thursday in May. It is located about 0.5 miles west of the center of Vineyard Haven. It was partially full, but developed a line while we were eating. They have a variety of options on the menu. It wasn't clear to me that chips were an option, but I got a BLT and wound up with chips. My wife and daughter enjoyed their lunches as well (sandwiches, I think). We later split a chocolate cookie for dessert, which was good. Everyone agreed that they liked this place. I come to the island all of the time and have never eaten lunch here. I thought this was a tourist trap and man was I wrong! I was greeted by lovely workers and the amazing aroma of coffee and treats! I decided to try the blt which is a staple of mine, with French fries. It was delicious. Everything you want for lunch, good ingredients with no frills. I also tried a chocolate donut which was pretty good.
