We had a reservation for 6 people at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived and were seated promptly. Our waiter was friendly and courteous. Our waiter took drink orders. Around 2, he came by and asked if we wanted any appetizers-we ordered a few. Around 2:30, the appetizers arrived and then he took our order for the meal. The meals were served close to 4pm, probably a little after. Some meals were served hot-my Louisiana Chicken was pretty much cold. It seems like the food was probably good, but the surrounding circumstances ruined it for us. The waiter thanked us for our patience but that was it. The table next to us experienced a similar delay--they were offered free drinks and/or desserts. This may have been the slowest service that I have ever experienced. Good restaurant overall. Walking inside, the place has a very casual vibe to it, you wouldn't know it's a steakhouse. They have nice patio seating outside. Foodwise, great with small caveats. The fresh honey bread and butter they serve is absolutely delicious, honestly my favorite part of the meal. I had the ribeye which was cooked nicely but the meat had way too much fat on it. Onion rings and salad sides were your standard flare, nothing beyond what you'd expect. The owner, an older lady was very friendly and I appreciate the good service. We came towards the end of the night, when it was slower, so the food was delivered quickly and our server was friendly. My friend and I ordered two things. We split the Yum Yum sirloin steak with bacon Mac and cheese, and the flat iron steak, B.I.G. style (Cabernet garlic sauce with mushrooms) and au gratin potatoes. The first meal, was delicious and not too expensive. Both of the steaks were cooked perfectly and they had nice flavor. Unfortunately I was not a fan of the B.I.G. Amazing! I'm just going to quit cooking beef at home. I can't even come close to how good the steaks are here. The mussels are a winner in a broth I couldn't get enough of. I visited this establishment with my girlfriend on 10/28/24 at roughly 5:30pm. There were only two other tables seated at the time. There was one server on staff at the time but for some reason the bartender needed to be ours. The wait times for the food was a bit longer than it should have been considering the low attendance that night, and the server/bartender was pretty slow to check on us with any regularity. Unfortunately the food was pretty lackluster, the French onion soup and the ribeye steaks that were ordered were very bland. There seemed to be potential with the food, but it just wasn't in evidence last night... The staff was friendly, however for the prices charged I cannot recommend this location to a steak enthusiast. They failed on all accounts. I ordered a 28 day aged bone in ribeye. I got a basic walmart ribeye (not bone in and likely not dry aged) with a cafeteria salad. I sent it back untouched. My son ordered a shrimp and pasta dish. They left the shells on the end of the shrimps. My daughter ordered ribs. They left the silver skin on. The place is rundown with beat up furniture and poor choices for decorations. Definitely not a place to ever bring a date. The takeaway is simple. Hidden behind other buildings on SR 43 is a discovery that we hadn't visited but when we smelled the aroma in the air we decided to investigate and found a very nicely decorated and delightful restaurant with a great bar and some amazing food with service to match! We started with Fried Calamari, which were only very lightly breaded, as we prefer, that was delightfully tender, a savory start to a great meal. Then on to a crock of French Onion Soup, it did not disappoint. Lastly, I enjoyed the 18 oz T-Bone cooked to a perfect medium rare while my wife enjoyed her favorite, the famously tender Filet Mignon, cooked to perfection and made her smile!!! I'm sure the deserts would have been just as fabulous and the food, service, and atmosphere but there was simply no way to enjoy more food during this first, but surely not last, visit. Whoever owns this treasure of a restaurant, please keep up the great work in your hideaway treasure, and pass on our compliments to the Chef and Staff on duty during our visit just after 5 PM on Thursday June 16, 2022!!! We arrived at noon today. Nicely stocked bar. Quiet, clean. Nice atmosphere. Ordered the rustic chops and the cranberry chicken. Bread looks and tastes amazing - soft and fresh. Salad - beautiful and delicious. Main courses and sides - all delicious! Nice crunch to the green beans. Great balance of flavors to the chicken and chops. We will definitely be back. Service was quick and friendly, despite that we came in kind of late for them. Food ordered - Black Sea special (steak and shrimp), filet with bacon Mac and cheese (I need a lifetime supply of this Mac and cheese... holy cow was it delicious), grouper with creamy rice and brussel hash (fish was pretty good, rice and brussel hash were awesome), BIG burger (delicious). Everyone was happy with their meals and we all shared their dessert special which was a spiced and roasted apple with ice cream and caramel sauce. It was great! Bone in Ribeye steak. I asked that it be prepared medium, to medium-well. However, I felt the steak was a bit under cooked, which made it a bit on the tough side to chew (picture attached is portion I took home). I cannot remember the last time I ordered steak at a restaurant (or, cooked one at home); doing so is definitely a "special treat" for me. As such, I may not have properly indicated how I wanted the steak cooked. I know the option to have the steak "taken back & re-cooked" exists. Unfortunately, I have had past unpleasant experiences (not at Black Iron) doing this, so I am now a bit "gun shy" to make this request wherever I dine. Fortunately, I was not extremely hungry, so the little I consumed, coupled with the excellent sides (onion rings & coleslaw) were sufficient. Nevertheless, the flavor of the steak is excellent; I am enjoying the left-over portion at home; with just a bit of re-heating, of course. Not asking our waitress take the steak back for more cooking was my choice. In doing so, I did not give the restaurant the opportunity to "make it right." It's not too far outside of Downtown Kent, which is fine given that there are no traffic or parking hassles. It's located toward the back of the property behind an insurance agency if I recall. The food was delightful, moreover, we didn't have a single complaint about anything that was brought to our table - delicious! Everything was cooked as requested & everything was seasoned very well. Beyond that, I've never eaten a steak that big - absolutely sinful!! The wait staff was pretty amazing too. A friendly young woman by the name of Tanjenae waited on us - very attentive. She was able to make solid recommendations & kept our drinks topped off. Management would do well to pay her enough to retain her, moreover, employees like this make or break your business - #PeopleAreNotNumbers. The bar tender was really cool too. Not only were the sprits of high quality, but he was willing to make drinks based on our taste profiles. He really went the extra mile which impressed us. Mixology is an art, it's easy to make a drink, but it's hard to make a good drink. In summation, we really enjoyed the Black Iron Grille & will definitely be returning next time we are in the area. But, who eats atmosphere. So the apps came out. They were a bit over prices for what you get, but the taste was pretty good. So I could live with it if the mains were good. So out came the steaks. What is the grade of meat prior to choice? That would be what they were serving. Gristle galore. Meat was cold, like under a warming light for some time. sides were not hot. So basically it seamed as though the kitchen had shut down. The place was supposed to be open for another 2 hours. The service was not overly friendly. When they were at the table, they were okay. But they spent most of their time with the 'regulars' that were getting treated very well. Drinks were flowing, they were hanging out at the table... So bottom line, unless you are willing to commit to become a regular and are willing to suffer through the initial breaking in period, this may not be the place for you. read more

Well, we were pleasantly surprised with our first visit here. It seems as though they've certainly gotten their stuff together! The ambiance and decor is pretty basic. Nothing modern. Just an old school steakhouse vibe, I suppose. A lot of wood paneling, dim lighting and a fireplace going on a cold December day. The outdoor patio looks fun, but obviously we couldn't use it with 7 inches of snow on the ground. I won't hold Ohio weather against them..... Ok, now the food: Side Salad- Oh man, get the white French dressing. If you get another dressing, you messed up and we're no longer on speaking terms. It's that good. This salad was huge, had a good mix of different greens and was so so delightful. I was licking the bowl to get every ounce of the dressing I could. You get to pick two sides with an entree, I might just order two salads next time if they let me. 10 oz Sirloin- This was the least expensive of the steaks at $16.99. Sirloin can be a little tough, but I'm cheap sometimes and didn't want a $23 steak, even though I prefer a ribeye cut. I'm glad I went this route. It was really tender for a sirloin. It had good crust and was cooked to medium just like I ordered. Two thumbs up. B.I.G Burger- ground ribeye, sirloin and strip steak burger topped with 2 onion rings, an easy over egg, bacon, cheddar, and Worcestershire aioli. My wife really liked it. It came with homemade chips and was $10.99. Complimentary Bread- crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It came with a sweet butter that was tasty. It looked dry and like it had been pre-made and microwaved or put in a salamander oven to re-heat. Salads and bread were good. Onion rings with horseradish sauce were amazing. Our waiter and waitress-in-training were attentive and friendly. The musty smell was a bit difficult to ignore - we were actually thrilled to get outside for fresh air. This was our first, and last visit. It is soooo surprising to see so many high reviews! He ordered the Louisiana blackened chicken, which is supposed to have some spice, and it absolutely did not. It tasted like plain blackened chicken. I ordered a steak, and it was sooo chewy that I couldn't even eat it! I got, what was supposed to be, a more lean cut, but on top of it being incredibly hard to cut and chew, half of it was also fat. I literally choked on a piece of meat because it was so hard to chew. The only thing that was good was the mashed potatoes and their parmesan sauce.... It also looked like there was only one waitress working, so service was not great, and after I complained about the steak to another girl, nothing was even said or done. We have been to BIG twice since they opened and both times have been great. Service- the waitresses we have had have all been outstanding. Very personable, very knowledgeable of the menu, and you truly get the feeling like you are their only table, even when they are busy. Drinks- drinks are extremely tasty! Have tried their Sangria and their turtle martini, and both were delicious. You really do get what you pay for here. Food- from the appetizers to the salads and soups, to the main course, everything I have had has been cooked perfect. The steak was a perfect kid rare and very juicy, and the portabella mushrooms pair just right. The BIG burger used quality ground beef and again was cooked just right. Loved the food and service. It's been a while since we have been to the black iron grill and it did not disappoint. We live far from the restaurant but if we have a reason to be out this way we to try to make it for dinner My husband had the beef tips and noodles the meat was tender and gravy good. We both had the onion soup outstanding rich broth but not over powering with a sharpness. It was the best. So much we had to take half the soup home . Guess what I am having tomorrow for lunch. They served soft warm crusty bread with our salads . We took half of the salad home to it was a very large plate. My main course was the grilled pork chop with a agave and apple glaze . So glad I ordered the one pork chop because I only ate half . So many wonderful food to eat tomorrow. I loved the apple graze so much that I had the waitresses ask the cook how to make the glaze. my husband's fish sandwich was WAY undercooked - like slimy, rubbery, turn your stomach, lose your appetite, not done. he sent it back to the kitchen and the woman who took it back (not our waitress) tells us how she got fish there a few weeks back and it was undercooked....wish we would have seen her before we ordered! What was amazing was that we had to ask for the inedible meal to be removed from our bill and then had to wait for someone to authorize the removal and then it was presented back to us like someone did us a grand favor....really?!?!
