Let me start by saying that I'm well aware that I did the Black Rose the wrong way. I'm writing this review in hopes that others will benefit from my mistake. I started off badly by showing up to the Black Rose not in the mood for an Irish pint. Wanting to do something Irish without fully committing to the bit, I chose a signature cocktail: the Red Breast Manhattan. Red Breast is an Irish whiskey I often enjoy, and I was excited to try it in a favorite cocktail of mine. In a moment of true hospitality, the waitress came back to my table to confirm that I did indeed want a $26 drink. If only I had heard the subtext in her question, which I now understand to be "do you want a $26 drink HERE?" Our water glasses arrived, visibly dirty, and our drinks arrived very promptly after. There was a fleck of something unknown, but clearly not of the recipe floating in the center of mine. My wife's point of Guinness was as expected. Our folly continued when we ordered food. We ordered a Reuben and the Chips and Curry. The Reuben was fine, but served on some pretty unimpressive bread, and with nearly flavorless sauerkraut. The bigger travesty was the chips. In this case, we received the worst frozen crinkle cut fries that I've ever tasted. They were freezer burned, and topped with what looked like the salt you get on cheap frozen pretzels. The fries were also the hottest thing I have ever been served at a restaurant. The curry tasted fine, but the questionable cleanliness of every dish we received kind of ruined it for me. After 10 minutes the fries were still uncomfortably hot, and we decided to cut our losses and leave. If you're looking for a place to down a pint of Guinness while listening to an Irish band or watching a game, I bet this is as good a place as any. Don't fool yourself to think that this is a place where they actually want you to have dinner though. Despite all of that our waitress was friendly, and prompt with everything she served. Stopped in for a drink and the place was packed. Didn't have any food because there was no place to sit and when some Bruins fans left for their next stop on the way to the game we finally got some stools in the window. Very Irish atmosphere. Bartenders were attentive and quick. Cleaned the bruins fans drinks up in minutes. read more

We like to find Irish pubs to visit when traveling and this one was a few blocks from our hotel. Very cool atmosphere. The food was good. They had a good selection of Irish whiskey but seemed to be out of a lot of them. Service was great! Only complaint would be the prices. It was $9.75 for a Guinness which seemed a bit high. read more

Looking for a beer and some music? This is the place to be in the evening. We stopped in to grab a bite and there was a charming man playing the guitar and singing. He seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of songs, which was quite impressive. Absolutely loved the music. Unfortunately he quit about 8:30. I started with magner's cider, which is always good on draught, and moved on to harp. I ordered mother Sweeney's corned beef. Corned beef and mustard on dark rye... fantastic all around. The rye is fresh the corned beef is cooked just right and the spicy mustard added the perfect zing. I had a cup of chowder on the side which was good. My date had a chicken sandwich with fries. The fries were good. The sandwich was ok, kind of bland. Aileen was our waitress and she was friendly and always around. We enjoyed the atmosphere and would definitely come back. read more

The food and drinks are great, the live band is great, it's just great. If you want an Irish pub in Boston, this is the one to check out.

Inside seating is allowed. Last call at 930pm. They have a bathroom that is really small. Good beer and good food. Food cost around 15$ and beer was around 8$ a beer. So kinda expensive. Server was forgetful at times and forgot if we asked for another beer or not. You can try a beer before you get one just ask the bartender or server they bring you a very small glass to try it before you buy it which was very nice. read more

Fantastic Irish Pub in the Quincy Market area! We each tried something different and EVERYTHING was delicious. The Shepherds Pie was well seasoned and the vegetables were not mushy. Bangers and mash we so flavorful and a generous portion. Each dish we saw around us looked yummy. If you are visiting the area like we were be sure to check it out, you'll be glad you did! read more

Stopped by this bar with my friends for a drink. Apparently it is pretty well known, either because it's one of the oldest bar or being the best, don't remember, but he sure had a good time. The bartender was friendly and told a few good jokes. Great atmosphere to hang out. read more

1st visit to Boston, Irish food/pubs are a MUST! This is our 1st stop on the Irish Food tour. Update: Ok, now on day 3, never finished the review and glad I didn't. The Black Rose is a bit pricey as we have discovered MOST places in Boston are. After trying numerous places and their Clam Chowder The Black Rose has the BEST clam chowder hands down I regret not getting the shepherds pie, the fish wasn't anything to write home about. This is a Faneuil Hall Staple-- the Irish-y foods are still good. Stay away from the burgers! No matter how you order them they come out overcooked and are hockey puck patties that you buy at wholesale clubs like Costco or BJ's. It's gross.-- for $20! Same with chicken sandwiches overcooked all food cooked ahead of time and comes out way too fast. The food barely got to our table and the wait person slapped the bill on the table -- I can understand if they were busy but they were not. Rushing people out the door is not good service -- plenty of places around the side in Quincy market-- this one had gone down hill. read more

Eh, certainly not the best Irish pub I've visited. First we encountered bouncers at the door that checked our bags - which seems strange going into a restaurant to eat dinner. Then we were told there was no place for three of us to sit - but after the hostess actually stood up from behind her podium and looked, saw an empty table. The waitress was dingy to say the least. Brought our appetizers after our food, never asked if we wanted drink refills, etc. The fish and chips was so-so, not the best for this type of establishment. The reuben spring rolls were more like egg rolls with hard coating. The only thing that was really any good was the clam chowder. Not impressed - won't be returning. read more

Was about to call it a night, when I heard the lively tunes drifting through the streets and decided to step inside for a night cap. There were seats available, but I felt like standing and there are plenty of spots to stand. Grabbed a pint of Guinness while watching Jinty McGrath. Jinty was on the little stage and the crowd was enjoying the music ranging from traditional Irish tunes to Ed Sheeran popular hits. Fantastic Irish pub (I didn't get to try the food), but decor, drinks and music were perfect. I wish I could have stayed longer, but alas, there was work to be done in the early morning. read more

Nice pub with an almost European feel and good traditional Irish fare. Service was phenomenal as we posted up for a long time to wait out rush hour traffic. Fish and chips are pretty classic and well done. The breading on the scrod is just what you'd expect for an authentic dish. The beer selection is also one of the best of all the bars I visited, the most choices and a good variety. The mint Irish coffee is boozy with Jameson, just as it should be. read more

Stopped in to meet a friend and have a beer. It's a little touristy thanks to the location near Faneuil Hall but the Guinness is legit. My apartment is very close so I've been by here often. It gets crowded and they do have some very loud Irish music that sounds great even across the street. read more

We stopped here as it is right across from our hotel. There was no wait to get inside. You could eat outside or inside. We ordered a pretzel . The side cheese that came with it was amazing. The pretzel was huge. The dipping mustard was good also. We also ordered two entrees. The grilled chicken breast was seasoned to perfection. Well worth it. The fries were homemade. This is where I fell in love with Guinness. I wrote a review for this place ages ago - do you guys like regularly remove reviews from Yelp? Anyhow, The Black Rose is a time-honored tourist trap in Boston. It's been around forever, they do live music on weekends which is usually really good, it's stupid crowded and the bathrooms are disgusting. But, I spent a lot of time here in my 20s and 30s. I had my first Guinness here, which is my favorite beer of all time. I have sang along to all the songs Frank Ryan and his Celtic Clan on numerous occasions here. It's a Boston staple and I still stop by from time to time for a Guinness. read more

Stuck at 3.5 stars here. I love this place. Guinness is cold and bartender very nice. Had the New England clam chowder which was really good. She had the lobster bisque which she didn't even finish. The hostess this evening is a disinterested and miserable she clearly could care less about customer service. As a party of one, I asked if I could have a seat, not in the middle of the empty dining area. She was rude and surely -- with 12 empty tables, she dismissively told me I couldn't take a side table because those were for parties of four - she couldn't care less when I tried to explain I was going to be ordering takeout for more than just me. The hostess earned the one-star; otherwise, I would have given a five-star recommendation. My waitress Fiona was a lovely lass from Cork; she was charming, on-point and responsive. She recommended Shepard's pie, which was perfect for a cold New England evening. The beer was good, and everyone loved the takeaway of curry chips, chicken tenders and jumbo pretzels to nibble on after a long flight. So glad their first Boston experience didn't involve the surly hostess. If I wanted shitty service with an attitude, I would have gone to Durgin Park - oh yeah, they closed. Was late and cold and a full day of traveling so this was the closest place to grab a bite to eat. Was a lovely really really packed bar. The game was on and they had live music. Not the place to relax or go for a quiet night out. Sat at the bar and took bartenders recommendation on the Beef Stew. It was hot and soup tasty just not a lot in the bowl. You know everything was great until the one unfortunate employee. However, the weakest link breaks the chain. One very disrespectful employee took my first night out of town in years from an outstanding night to an example of why poor customer service can really define a business. I don't know her name, she absolutely was rude, unapologetically for no reason and was introduced to our service mid visit. She messed up our order twice in the time we had her. I brought it to the attention of the manager on the way out. It was a shame really I insisted with my wife we leave after so much inconvenience. The music was nice. Not worth that though. They certainly aren't doing the heritage of the lovely establishment any favors by keeping anyone like that employed. read more

Came here on a Thursday night and I'm all for live music, but it was just WAY TOO LOUD and everyone talking over the music made it even louder. It was so frustrating having to repeat ourselves and yell at each other when my bf was just sitting across from me. Some may be into the loud music but it's just not it if you're trying to talk! The food came quick which was a plus but I realized that everyone came for drinks, not for the food - and I can kinda see why. We felt as if a lot of the food was frozen and just reheated, not freshly made. The Shepards pie should be called a soup. The Jameson sauce, I'm pretty sure is an up charge doesn't make up for the fact the wings are $3 each. I was not impressed with the food. Went looking for Irish food and this place missed it. The drinks were weak and pricey. You'll walkout probably not angry or over stuffed as the plates are too small to take anything home as leftovers. Totally a safe bet to pick a second place to eat after leaving the black rose. read more

Hands down, this was my favorite bar in Boston! Mostly because it reminded me of the pubs in Ireland. They offer live Irish music 7 nights a week, perfectly poured Guinness on draught and the BEST Irish coffee I've had, Ireland included! The bartender was amazing, funny and quick with a quip, amazing Boston accent! I wish I could remember his name! He as also sweet enough to pour me a mini Guinni since I was too full to have a pint. The crowd was awesome, except for a group of loud obnoxious women asking for "Irish Car Bombs" and not getting how offensive that is, even when being schooled by the bartender. Our server was one of then worst I've ever had. He had to ask about our order 6 times to make sure what we wanted and never once wrote it down. I usually don't mind wait staff working off of memorization but it was clear this man was not remembering. Even after clarifying what we wanted SIX TIMES he still brought out the wrong drinks and food. I am not sure how he managed to do this but he did. When our waiter came back to see if we wanted more drinks we ordered some and they never came. The food was clearly old, not fresh, and the fish and chips left a chemical taste in our mouth.
