We had heard stories of the hotel attached to Last Hurrah being haunted so we were intrigued. The hotel and bar were very busy. The staff were friendly and the cocktails were refreshing. Located in the Omni parker house hotel. We checked in pretty late so we were too tired to go anywhere and chose to stay in the hotel. Unfortunately, they close the kitchen at 10 PM so we added ourselves to the waiting list, hoping that we would be seated by that time. We even told the hostess that you were likely to be seated after the kitchen closed to let us know as we would figure out another option since you wanted to eat. They finally called her name and we seated at 9:55 PM. We already knew what we were going to order. Ask the host this again if we will be able to put in our order for food and she told us no since the kitchen was closed. As a frequent guest amenity, I was given a ticket for a free drink at this bar and so I stopped in to the bar to avail myself of that. The bar is long and lovely. Deep, rich dark wood lined walls are interspersed with dark graphite painted walls which are decorated with interesting iconic black and white framed photos. Large picture windows line the long side of the bar so if people watching is your thing, there was plenty of opportunity to do that here. The whole look is quite nice. As you can see, my free drink was a very generous pour. I was a bit peckish and was two hours out from dinner so I ordered from the bar menu.....a trio of deviled eggs! Yum! I like this place a lot! This is the bar/restaurant located inside the Omni Parker House Hotel. I came here every night of my stay because the drinks were awesome. It has an upscale bar vibe, and the staff is friendly and quick. At times, there could be a wait for a table, but even that went by quickly. I did try the food, along with the rolls and Boston cream pies that they're known for. Some food items were really good while others were average. The pie and drinks are the reason to not pass this place up. While visiting Boston last week, I made a dessert pilgrimage to The Last Hurrah, the cozy bar located inside the historic Parker House Hotel. Why? Because legend has it, this is where the Boston Cream Pie was invented. So, when in Rome....right? The hotel? Very cool. It gave "The Shining" vibe...minus the ghosts and bleeding elevator doors of course. But, I didn't come to stay overnight. Just came for the historic dessert, which was served here! I grabbed a barstool, was greeted quickly, and ordered the one thing I came for: "Boston Cream Pie, please." It arrived quickly (maybe a little too quickly) and looked like a work of art----strawberry on the side, chocolate drizzle, whipped cream swirled to perfection. Visually, it was a 10. Taste-wise? More of a polite nod than a standing ovation. I was expecting the triangle-shaped custard-filled, creamy "pie" version you'd find at a diner. This was the OG: which is pretty much a round dense yellow cake, a sliver of cream in the middle, and a subtle sweetness that leaned more classic than indulgent. Also, it was a bit firm for my liking, likely from refrigeration. A little heads-up by the waitress or on the menu that said "Just so you know, this is the traditional version, not the Marie Callender's kind" would have been helpful. Nonetheless, I'm glad I tried it. It's not every day you eat a dessert with historical credentials. Just know it's more cake than cream, and more subtle than sweet. The original evening plans were derailed due to the weather so we decided to have dinner at the hotel. The Last Hurrah is the hotels restaurant and lounge that is beautifully decorated in that old school Omni flair. The pace was pretty busy so we had to join a waitlist to be seated but by the time we had enjoyed one drink at the bar, our table was ready! We were both in the mood for something warm and hearty given the rainy day so we ordered the sirloin tip stew and a pepperoni flatbread! Both were tasty and hit the spot! After three tours had pointed out the Last Hurrah and the origins of the Boston Crème Pie, we had to try it. The restaurants decor was regal and fitting the history that this place has seen. By the time we were ordering, the restaurant was so packed that the only option we had was to take-out. The wait wasn't too bad, around 20 minutes, but it was definitely worth it. Located within the Omni Parker Hotel, with the entrance next to the Tremont Street side, Last Hurrah is a dependable bar where you can enjoy a drink or two after work or for a night cap if you stay there for a night. Price-wise it's solid if you're intending to enjoy whiskey while you're there, which they have a very good selection. Depending on the time of day you're going, you may need a reservation if you would like a table. They have someone who stands at a narrow stand-alone counter by the front door to control maximum capacity inside the establishment, especially if the tables are full. You might be able to grab a drink at the bar, but if there's already a crowd, they may not permit people to go in until the space opens up. Service-wise, it was ok. The first time I went there for a drink after afternoon sessions, I think was during happy hour, so we didn't see much of our server, so we had to really flag down if we are looking for a second drink or the check. The second time was ok as we returned later in the evening on our second day for a martini. I think the server misheard me as I asked for an extra dirty gin martini, and only did a dirty. It was still satisfactory but I do like what the extra olive juice does, so that was a little disappointing. But overall, their cocktail menu and whiskey menu is very good. And they do have a kitchen if you want to order food as well. If you're staying at the hotel, it's a good spot to start or finish your evening. read more

This is the second time I've eaten here in a month and I am so glad I did! Full disclosure, I used to hang out here back when I worked at 294 Washington Street in 1980 something and the place was always fun with a great atmosphere and an old, antique bar to belly up to. I remember the food being delicious back then and it is still very tasty now! The service is phenomenal! The valet was very friendly and he's been there a long time which I take as a sign the ownership and management are very effective and successful and care for their employees. The bartenders are there to please and do a bang up job. The waitress I had last month was superlative. It turns out she's been there a long time too! Another great testament to the management team. This is a fantastic bar located within the Omni Parker Hotel. There is cozy seating in leather chairs around the bar, as well as normal, high top and bar seating. We sat in the leather chairs facing the street to people watch while enjoying some creative craft cocktails and a lovely Boston Cream Pie. I could not visit Boston without trying Boston Cream Pie, and what better place I thought than the place that claims to have invented it? When I initially read that the Omni Parker House Hotel's claim to fame was creation of the pie, I was a little confused since it was a hotel and wondered if you had to be a guest to try it. Last Hurrah is immediately to the left when you enter Omni Parker House. Like the hotel itself, the bar has an upscale aesthetic with lots of earth tones, woods, and high-end finishes. Theres' a variety of seating types available, including tables, lounge areas, and the bar. It was kinda busy when I arrived but was able to snag a seat at the bar and started to browse the menu. They had a decent variety of drinks and food - I decided on a drink and ordered the Boston Cream Pie. The drink was good - I had the Hemingway Special which was smooth and had good flavor. I was disappointed in the pie - the cake was dry, and the cream wasn't smooth - almost like it was split or something. I expected more from the place that claims to have invented the dessert - but like other instances, the original isn't always the best. Service was good, the bartender was friendly and made sure I was taken care of. Located in the historic Omni Parker House hotel, the Last Hurrah is an upscale whiskey bar that has an unmistakable inviting glow when you pass by it and its massive glass-paned windows facing the street. During a recent stay at the Omni Parker House, the original home of the Boston Cream Pie, I knew my visit wouldn't be complete without giving the local confectionary delight a try during my stay. During the weekend, the Last Hurrah was PACKED from the time it opened until the time it closed. I opted to visit on a Monday evening shortly before Christmas and found it to be a much smaller crowd. (I was able to actually get a table and/or seat at the bar the third time I tried) Service was great. I opted to have the Chicken Parmesan sandwich for my entree, which came with a side of house chips and a pickle. The sandwich was good - nothing to write home about as a trip highlight but if you're hungry it'll get the job done. For dessert, I of course went with the Boston Cream Pie and accompanying Boston Cream Pie martini. I gotta say - I agree with many of the other commenters that although the dessert may have gotten it start here, it definitely wasn't the best I've ever had. BUT that martini was what dessert cocktail dreams are made of. I loved the ambiance of the bar and would definitely be back to enjoy a cocktail or two at the beautiful wood bar. It is like a piece of cake. it was OK but very dry. It's nice inside. Our server was great!! The clam chowder was really good. Whenever I stay at the Omni Parker Hotel, I like to stop downstairs at the hotel bar called The Last Hurrah. The Last Hurrah is one of Bostons Crown Jewels. Look inside and you'll see seating appointed in a soft leather upholstery and the bar adorned in rich mahogany. Looking over the menu, one will see lots of signature martinis as well as large selection of single malt whiskey. Want to drink a pint? They have lots of beer choices as well. Overall, it's a great pub where you can sit and tip one back. I was given a coupon within my room key for a free glass of wine or beer. I figured, lemme get my Boston Cream Pie on as well as a drink before hitting the rack. I go to the bar and ask for Boston Cream Pie as well as an Irish Coffee. I said this in my last review, you can get Boston Cream Pie here at the Last Hurrah or at the gift shop. Since I'm staying at the hotel, I'm going to people watch and enjoy my BCP. I think I was more impressed with the Irish Coffee! The bartender made a tasty libation that went very well with my BCP. After I finished my dessert, I see the cocktail menu has something called The Perfect Martini. Listen.. I'm from New York. I see signs in windows all the time for "Worlds Best Coffee" or "The Best Bagel in The Big Apple". You could say anything but if you're the Perfect Martini then challenge accepted. I would say it is the perfect amount of sweetness, sweet enough to be a dessert but not sweet enough to make you want to drink cups and cups of water to clean out your mouth.... If you are expecting a dessert that will blow your mind and will make you dream about it for years to come, this is not it...but it is still a great dessert. The first restaurant on our Boston tour was the Last Hurrah. An old style pub gives off a classy and classic feel to the pub. We drop by around 3-4 pm and no wait was needed to get a table. The website did say there is a dress code, but it feels like its more for the night time clients; hence less enforced when we went. Clam Chowder - The clam chowder was thick, creamy and savory. The chowder had both a generous amount of seafood (mainly clams) and potatoes. Potatoes were cooked to the point where they were getting mushy and was contributing to thickening the chowder. The clams were chewy giving a good mix of texture to the soup. Would recommend. Boston Cream Pie - This was a recommended dish on many travel sites, but I see it more of a relic more than a culinary delight. The pie is a small but tall sponge cake layered with cream, topped with chocolate and served with some whipped cream and strawberry sauce. The cake itself was dry, felt different from the modern iterations of sponge cakes with moist sponge layers. Would only recommend if you're looking for a cultural experience or are ok with dry sponge cakes. As a visitor of the city, I would probably not come back to this establishment. Although their cocktails and drink menus do look interesting. As well, a there was a stew that looked pretty good. read more

I find it ironic and amusing that a woman named Brandy reviewed this whiskey bar. It's a lovely bar in a beautiful historic hotel, but I wanted a brandy and all they had was Hennessy. They have what seems to be a hundred different choices of whiskey, but just one cognac. The waitress knew her stuff, there was no insulting hidden upcharge, the big street facing windows and old fashioned leather and brass tavern ambiance make this a very hospitable place for a nightcap with friends. It's also the kind of bar where you could comfortably have a drink by yourself and no one would bother you. Not to mention this is the hotel where the Boston Cream Pie was invented. By the way, it's not really a pie, it's a rich cake. I had one and got diabetes. There I was aimlessly wandering around the North End unsure where I wanted to eat my first night in Boston. My original plans had fallen through, I didn't feel dressy enough to eat at my backups, and after a day of travel I just wanted to head back to my hotel to rest after a quick bite. I meandered further downtown to the Omni Parker. The lobby is pretty nice if you come in the main lobby doors, but the entrance on Tremont Street is next to the The Last Hurrah if you prefer a less grand entry. The vibe is old school bar, a classy kind of pub if you will. It's still a hotel bar full of tourists, and most guests were in casual clothes so I don't think they're discriminating on wardrobe here. I took a seat at the bar since it looked pretty inviting. Sometimes I worry about places being stuffy, snobby, whatever you want to call it. Not here! The staff were all a bit older, seasoned if you will, as if they'd been there forever. I loved that! They were friendly enough and didn't make me feel like I was soggy trash coming in from the rain. I ordered a perfect martini, a cup of clam chowder, and the Boston cream pie. I don't always drink martinis, but this just felt right. Isn't The Last Hurrah a whiskey bar? It sure is! But I went with gin, becasue who can resist a "perfect" martini? Not me. Is it perfect? Perhaps. It's the best one I've ever had. The perfect amounts of everything really with a delicate lemon twist that just lifted everything. My cup of clam chowder ended up being the perfect size. I wasn't too hungry and it was actually a very delicious clam chowder. Being the first one of my trip it was to be the gold standard all the following chowders I ate that week would be measured against. They all fell short. Parker House is given the credit for making the first Boston cream pie way back in 1856. Does that mean they do it the best? No. Have they already released the recipe online so you can just make it at home? Yes. Did I still want to order one just to say I had it and avoid spending time in the kitchen? Also yes. While they sell full sized ones via GoldBelly, the version they sell in the hotel for room service and the various restaurants is a mini, like a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut, which adds a lot of charm. Unfortunately they're just not great. They're a bit dry, really lacking in the cream element, and worse yet- there isn't much flavor. Their recipe calls for 1 tsp. of dark rum per batch of pastry cream. They probably only sell so many because it's the only dessert on the menu. There's a big world of desserts out there. This one is a retro dessert that perhaps once upon a time was a marvel of skill and delicate flavors for people that had never even tried cinnamon. A fruit pie from a gas station would have blown their handknitted socks off. Overall I enjoyed my meal, the cocktail, and the vibe. I don't know if I'd rush back the next time I'm in town, but maybe it'll become my new touchdown tradition. If you're looking for a low key spot for a good drink and an easy meal, this might be the one. If you're feeling brave go look for the Charles Dickens Mirror in the hotel.
