This place was a bit of an enigma. I can't quite quantify why it wasn't quite working for me. The entrance was oddly located. Then a long hallway where you turn a corner to a long table, center in the room, which isn't used for guests but rather for server items to disperse. Cups, napkins, plates I think tucked away underneath. We were seated in this 2 seat alcove immediately to the left. And you can't really see anything. Every seat on that side is in a small alcove. And then you see the center table that's tall & blocks the other side where other small tables are lined up. But you can't see those either. The walls are dark grays, blacks, & purples. Our alcove wall was adorned with what I think were dresser knobs of varying shapes. It reminded me of some of the weird clubs in NY I'd go to in my 20s where the decor reminded me of a college students are project. The waiter was very friendly & on point. But felt a little overdone. A little too much in the sauce as it were. Too much into the art project. Honestly the food was good but I was so thrown off by the feng shui of the place that I don't know if I really enjoyed it. I'd almost be tempted to go back & be seated in a different spot just so I can see if it was just our location or if the whole place was designed wrong. Amazing experience! The concept is Mediterranean but it's unique as they feature different Mediterranean countries seasonally, some that are unique/rarely featured. The decor is upscale and feels fancy while still being warm and inviting. Definitely a great special occasion or date night vibe. The location has free and easy parking, it uses the parking garage for the main & stone apartments and the few businesses by that building - so it makes it a convenient option on a weekend. The service was top notch for my friends birthday dinner. We started with some really great cocktails and also enjoyed the wine list selection. The cheese board was really flavorful and unique and I very much enjoyed my pasta & scallops dish! They brought a candle in our dessert for my friends birthday which was a nice touch for the celebration. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by my dining experience at Black Sheep while visiting Greenville. I don't know how I would have found out about this place if it were not for word of mouth, as there is very little signage out front. This type of "niche quirkiness" continues as you move into the space, which is sophisticated and elegant, and also a little strangely decorated (think black sheep heads upon entrance and more in the bathroom). It wasn't bad or distracting, just different. Once we sat down, our waiter "took us on a tour" of the menu. The menu is seasonal and represents cuisine from different countries. I honestly don't remember what countries I tried, but all the food was phenomenal (they do give you a passport with your bill, so you remember what you tried). The cocktails were also fantastic, and I agree with others that the dessert didn't compare with the rest of the meal. Our waiter definitely knew his stuff, though he used the word "umami" more than I like. I would definitely come back here to try a different menu with a different mix of cuisines! read more

We had an 8 p.m. reservation and were seated immediately. The restaurant side was buzzing, while the bar area was quieter and relaxed--perfect for a comfortable dinner atmosphere. Our server was exceptional--one of the best we've had in Greenville. He knew the menu inside and out, offered thoughtful suggestions, and explained how the restaurant changes its menu seasonally to highlight different regions of the Mediterranean. The cocktail list is also impressively long and creative. For appetizers, we tried several dishes: * Baked Brie: Phenomenal--topped with honey and herbs, served with a warm baguette from Rize Bakery. * Spiced Carrots: My personal favorite of the night--thinly sliced carrots with goat cheese and incredible flavor balance. * Onion & Apple Tart: The table's favorite--savory and subtly sweet. * Lahmajoun: My close second--soft bread with a perfectly crisp edge and bold, layered flavors. For mains, we had the lamb shank (fall-off-the-bone tender with a rich, heavy sauce), the NY strip (one of the better steaks I've had in Greenville, served with several unique sauces), and the duck, which ended up being the table favorite. We also ordered the mushrooms from the "Garden" section--everyone else loved them. Dessert was the only weak point. We ordered the crema catalana (similar to crème brûlée) and the orange cake. Both were underwhelming--the crema's top wasn't caramelized quite right, and the cake was dry. To their credit, our server noticed and kindly removed them from the bill. Given how strong the rest of the experience was, this didn't change my overall impression. Overall, The Black Sheep delivered one of the best meals I've had in Greenville--excellent service, thoughtful menu, and incredible flavors. If you're looking for a farm-to-table (think Topsoil or the Anchorage) but with Old World cuisine, then we recommend The Black Sheep on the border between downtown Greenville and North Main neighborhood. The menu is seasonally rotated so the following recommendation will only be good through November. We recommend pairing the duck entree at medium rare which also comes with mushrooms and potatoes (French style, pommes Anna but in a stack) with the mushroom side. The combination of the umami of the duck + all the variations of the mushrooms is amazing. We also ordered the carrot salad which we recommend to order to start with something fresh. But we'd love to have tasted a bit more acid in the vinaigrette (more lemon) and a bit thicker (maybe emulsified) since it was so thin it ran off the carrots. OMg! An outstanding evening! This menu changes but tonight we had lentil stew and the carrot salad. The carrot dish was wonderfully delicious and very light. Entrees included clams, kebabs, and duck. The duck was perfect! Of course after that meal--and at this place--we had to try dessert. The crema catalana was so smooth and not too sweet! The Armenian coffee was strong (as expected) but not overpowering and had a robust flavor! So yes, the food was amazing but the service was even better! Our waiter, Will, did a phenomenal job of explaining the dishes to us and gave incredible personal attention. Even if others brought out our food, he was right there to make sure it was delivered correctly and to answer any questions. The restaurant clearly hires only the best and trains them well!! Beautiful restaurant. Food is not worth the price in my opinion. . We sent our drinks back but the bartenders were very understanding, kind and personable. We came at 5pm and the restaurant was not busy.. but The owner/chef walked by my group (consisting of 3 people) more than 2 handful of times with not smile or even a hi... which I believe is important in starting a business especially if you are opening a business in a tight knit community. So we ended up asking for her, just to introduce ourselves and congratulate her... She walked past us three times after the Bartender told us that she asked Danielle to come over. Mind you there were maybeee a total of 6 people in the restaurant at this point . I will not be coming back to this restaurant which is unfortunate because I was excited for them to join north main community. read more

Fabulous service. VERY POOR FOOD CONTENT. Dined with two other friends on Wednesday, August 27. All three of us are world-experienced diners and have lived and dined in Greenville for 20 years+. The table ordered the lavash board (mediocre). Each ordered a different entree: chicken thighs (dry), black sea bass (dry, overcooked), and the smoked white fish (whole fish - had to sift through very carefully to gain a small sliver of fish). First of all, there is free parking at the restaurant! A plus vs downtown dining. Last night was our first visit but we will definitely be back. The space is really beautiful and this is a much needed addition to Greenville's dining scene. Each season features the cuisines of 4 Mediterranean countries (Spain, France, Armenia and Morocco currently). The menu is thoughtful and well ordered. We started with the baked Brie which was perfect for two and enjoyed the blistered grapes accompanying it. My friend had two appetizers; the Lentil Stew and the Lahmajoun which we were unfamiliar with but which he described as pure comfort food. I ordered the Armenian entree Pork Lula Kebab. It is a very generous potion and was absolutely delicious! It is ground pork with a number of spices, onions, etc that is rolled and grilled and served with a really excellent yogurt as well as rice and a grilled tomato. When I requested a to-go for the left-overs our excellent server "Z" made sure I got an excellent dollop of the yogurt. The service was attentive but not obsequious. Chef Danielle introduced herself and talked about her vision. She spent 8 years as Chef de Cuisine at the excellent Jianna and it shows. The wine list is also very thoughtful IMO.
