I'm Persian (real Persian) I visited Greenville, SC for business from California and if you know anything about CA, it's the Mecca of authentic Persian food. I was intrigued when I found "Green Lettuce USA" advertised as a Persian restaurant. Long story short, after visiting last night for dinner, I WAS SHOCKED! Authentic real Persian kebobs are one of the hardest foods to make and Green Lettuce kebobs were authentic as if it had been made in the motherland. The kebobs were SCRUMPTIOUS!! No exaggeration the food at Green Lettuce was one of the best Persian foods I've ever ate. Bravo to the owner for enforcing such strict super high quality practices & tradition & rules. I honestly don't understand how this place is still in business. Let's start with the food. I've had better Persian food from roadside trucks. Nothing was seasoned. Absolutely nothing. I could've made a better meal at home with the chicken and rice in my fridge. The only reason I managed to finish my plate was because the salt shaker and the lemon wedge were doing all the heavy lifting. Portions were pathetic unless you count the mountain of bland, over-buttered rice. If you don't want a bowl of flavorless carbs, congratulations, you get about 12 bites of chicken unless you shell out for an overpriced appetizer. We got McDonald's on the way home. Mediocre doesn't even begin to cover this place. Now to the service. We arrived on time for our 7:30 reservation and were parked at the bar for 20 minutes before being seated at 7:50. Then the real disaster began. Our waiter took our order and vanished for an hour and a half. We ordered an appetizer and two kebabs. Every table around us received bread, appetizers, and full meals while we sat there with our drinks. After 90 minutes, she finally returned, saw that we were the only table with no food, took our order again, and casually admitted the kitchen had to "remake" our food, which is a polite way of saying she never put it in. She offered us bread like it was some grand favor, even though every other table got bread immediately upon sitting down. Then she disappeared again for another 30 minutes. Eventually she tells us the owner is personally working on our food. So at this point, the owner knows we've been waiting two hours. Did he come out to apologize? Of course not. Instead, he avoided eye contact every time he walked past. Our food finally arrived nearly two and a half hours later, just in time for us to rush through it because the restaurant was closing. We showed up at 7:30 pm and watched staff start cleaning tables at 10 pm while we were finally eating. Romantic Valentine's dinner, right? And after all that? The food was still mediocre at best. Completely not worth the time, money, or aggravation. I've had better meals from a truck and better flavor from a $3 jar at Publix. To really put the cherry on top, the waiter forgot to return our credit card. We had already left the restaurant and had to come back inside and ask them to check the register because she didn't give it back to us. As for professionalism, there was none. The waiter was classless and unpolished, with messy hair and visible hand tattoos hanging out of long sleeves. If you're trying to run a "nice" restaurant, your staff should reflect that. This didn't. Looking back, we should have asked for the check after the first hour and a half and walked out. Pizza places have better service, and their food is at least good and worth the money. This places food wasn't worth it. The wait wasn't worth it. And the price was definitely not worth it. If you're thinking about coming here for Valentine's Day, or any special occasion, do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. At least there, you'll probably get fed before closing time and won't have to cancel your proposal plans because dinner took three hours to arrive. Save your money. Save your time. I'm always amazed that people open a restaurant and then expect it to run on magic. Here we have a perfectly nice restaurant that, on a cold night, decides that instead of seating people it will leave them to huddle, like hobos, in their, what we'll generously call, lobby. OK, your host/hostess called out. You can't just ignore your customers and have passing waitresses seat customers when they have nothing else to do, which, in the way of most restaurants, never happens. Eventually we are seated by a harried waitress who, for no discernible reason, didn't hand us menus and promised them "soon". This despite the fact that she was standing next to a pile of menus when she picked us up from the "lobby". To make it even weirder she then went to a nearby table, took their order, gathered their menus and walked right past us to return to the menus to the lobby desk. Of course you know what happened next. Our waiter pops up and wants to know if we have any questions about the menu. Oh I got questions, but they aren't about the menu I have yet to acquire. We'll just assume the kitchen was under-staffed because the food took a while to come out. Absent the host/hostess front of house seemed to be adequately staffed, although I can't imagine anyone was getting any breaks. What's stranger is that tables who were already seated when we arrived were getting their appetizers when we were getting our main course. For all I know those people may still be there. Other reviews have mentioned the food being bland, and I'd agree. I understand Persian food is not supposed to be fiery chili hot but rather a subtle blend of spices, but it was too subtle for me I'm afraid. This is another of those places I won't choose to go back to, but if I"m with a group and they decide they want to go here I'd tag along, just to see what happens if nothing else. read more

I watched as the old Duke's sandwich shop was transformed into an upscale restaurant, mainly because I would peek in while my wife was at the bird store next door. Sam is the owner, chef and also is a carpenter who built the tables and much of the decor. It was hard for me to imagine how good this restaurant would be, but it was obviously a labor of love for the owners. We had a 6:45PM Friday night reservation. The restaurant was fairly busy, but the only staff consisted of Sam, on the grill, Khaled, the GM/Waiter/busboy/frontofthehouse, and Sam's wife, whose name I did not get. She was taking orders, running food, it was a busy night for this group, but we did not miss anything in the way of our experience. The inside has really no resemblance of its past - a large water feature is in the center of the room. Wooden flooring, high black ceilings, clever art work and a full bar complete a warm and open feeling. Sam makes everything from scratch. You can even try their hot, unsweetened Mediterranean teas, served with halved dates, which is a traditional way. We opted for wine, though! We started with an appetizer, kashk bademjan, consisting of sauteed eggplant and onions with a cream of whey, mint and garlic served with grilled pita bread sliced into strips. This was outstanding. The idea here that is encouraged is to share various dishes. We decided to share a spinach salad with strawberries, walnuts, feta and balsamic dressing. Then we had a double up order of a lamb kebab and beef koobideh, which is sort of like kofta, a seasoned and juicy ground beef kebab roll. This was accompanied by basamati-saffron rice and two grilled roma tomatoes and a green hot sauce that was other-worldly good! I am the regular cook at home and usually can cipher out what is in a sauce, but this one I am not sure....yet. We overheard Khaled describing a dessert cake that they offer as a very light and airy traditional cake made in house with a mild coffee flavor and chocolate/coffee icing. It sounded so good, we had one brought out to go since we were so full. I must say that Khaled was outstanding in service and attitude even though he was extremely busy. We never felt anything but welcomed and appreciated. It was also interesting to see Sam come out and clear off tables in a true family owned and operated manner. Get the job done!, and they most certainly did - we will return soon for another enjoyable experience. read more

Green lettuce is amazing. I think mediterran food is so underrated. All of the meals were delicious. The appetizers were a great start to the meal. There was a pomegranate glaze on the olives that added sweetness to balance the briny olives. I didn't get a picture but for my main course I got the vegetable platter. The vegetables were seasoned well and still had a nice bite to them. I also was able to try their chicken which the most tender and juicy chicken I have eaten. The stuffed grape leaves were a must try as well. On our table was sumac which you can sprinkle on just about anything. It adds a nice brightness to the dish. The service was great. The owner would check on us and it made for a more personal experience. I would fully recommend and will for sure be back. read more

We had a delicious and delightful meal at Green Lettuce. The food and hospitality were outstanding. The level of detail in the food prep and presentation was indicative of a fine-dining restaurant. For apps we had the Kashk Bademjam and Fresh Beet Mix. The Kashk Bademjam is a sautéed eggplant dish that tasted savory, roasted, and deep. I'm not a fan of eggplant per se, but this dish converted me. The mint and garlic provided lively background notes, and the crispy onions added a perfect crunchy element. The dish was scrumptious with the pita bread. The bread itself was wonderful. Thinner than most pita, and it had a nice sesame seed coating. The Fresh Beet Mix was also a winner. The generous portion of beets was accompanied by thinly sliced cucumber and red onion. The fresh dill and lemon dressing was amazing. The addition of fresh herbs such as parsley and dill were a common theme in all the dishes. For entrees we had the salmon kebab and the beef koobideh (the kebabs are thoughtfuly removed from the sticks prior to presentation). The salmon was impeccablly fresh, and cooked to perfection. The exterior was delicately charred, and the interior was moist and succulent. The fish was better than many salmon dishes that I've had at seafood specialty restaurants. The beef koobideh was ground beef, robustly seasoned. The meat was evidently grilled by the same deft hand that prepared the salmon. The accompanying rice was grain for grain and delicious. Our server Alejandro, was hospitable and attentive. And finally, the mixed drinks were a delight. Green Lettuce satisfies on every level. read more

After running errands all day, my husband and I realized we were too late to wait to get home for dinner when we happened upon this lovely gem of a restaurant. The humble exterior does not prepare you for the culinary adventure awaiting inside! Upon entering, we were welcomed and given amazing service. Our server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu sharing helpful details not available on the menu. She literally had our mouths watering with anticipation by the time we made our final decision - rack of lamb with roasted tomatoes and Persian rice as well as veggie kabob served with dolmas, hummus and Persian rice. The lamb was perfectly cooked and delivered with a surprise addition of sautéed spinach and mushroom caps in a balsamic reduction sauce. The house-made pita and chili sauce were excellent additions. The Green Lettuce is a beautiful little spot-live plants, water fountain, open and airy. The food is amazing! We ordered two appetizers ( I forget the name but one had egg plant and crispy onions) which were delicious with the warm Pita bread. Our main meal was Persian Pan Stew with rice-(I could eat this every day) and the chicken specialty plate which included salad and hummus both were excellent. The Persian tea was delicious and we ordered the Persian coffee cake for dessert, it was light with just the right amount of sweet. Our waiter, Luke, was also excellent. Food was out fast, drinks were refilled in a timely manner and he was very attentive and made wonderful recommendations. All of them were just so-so. Almost tasteless and too pricey for the quality. If it were just me I would discount it but all 4 of us agreed.
