My sister and I had brunch this sunday - it's 14.95 buffet style brunch, and it ranges from egg benedicts, to freshly made waffles, crispy bacon, a la carte omelettes and much more. The menu gives a good range of food to choose from. And although the food in this quiet and arcane eatery is good, The ambience is what really captivates me. Weather allowing, you may sip on coffee or wine in the large outdoor garden which is divine, and romantic. its brickpavers are gracefully aged and the garden outdoorsy furniture makes you feel as if you've travelled to some european country - right here in the bronx! So needless to say, i like this place a lot. but let's be real, there is always room for improvement so here it is: The hostess that day was not very informative about the days activities- ie the buffet style brunch, and my sis' and i sat wondering when we would get menus. a few minutes later when our drink order was taken we were made aware. Found this place on yelp yesterday as I am planning a visit to Bronx Botanical Garden and want to find a brunch place. The website said $10.95 a person but actually it is $12.95. The restaurant is super small and fully packed. I called in the morning around 9am and made reservation at 11am, but still ended up with waiting for about 10 minutes. Our desk is right in the room of the buffet desk so it was really crowded and smelly later on after the kitchen burned something. So many people stoos in the line to get food (about 15-20 of them in that small tiny room) and the omelet order was like 30 + ahead of mine. Our waitress did not take our drink order until 10-15 minutes later and she didn't come to get the empty plates as often as she should. I guess they were overwhelmed by the father's day parties. Well, as I will probably never go to City Island in the future, I probably will not go this place for the rest of my life. A very nice little place right in the center City Island. We found it while perusing places to eat dinner before going to check out some friends that were playing at a nearby cafe. What was appealing was that it was cozy and charming, and not too overbearingly "hey, we're on City Island, look, we have sea food, eat some fried clams...look at our giant neon sign....I said, we have sea food!!" (anyone who's driven down City Island Ave. knows what I mean). Although a little on the cramped side (Saturday night at 6:30, OF COURSE it's going to be busy!), it definitely had a homey type feel (almost like a B&B). Very nice mood lighting (candles!) and some good tunes (Sinatra, Louis Armstrong) set the tone for a delicious meal of crab cakes with red roasted pepper sauce with veggies and mashed potatoes (me) and some spicy-sauced pasta with crab meat and mussels (the lady). The portions were sized just right, and although I saw some enticing desserts being served, we had to hold off since that was the plan for our next stop. However, the next time I stop in, Black Whale, your desserts belong to me! Great prices, excellent waitstaff/service, and decent fellow diners rounded out a pretty nice meal. Really adore this place, which a friend and I discovered on our annual City Island visit. What looks like a cute cafe from the outside opens up to be a fairytale garden space, full of appropriately mismatched furniture and decor. Quite cozy! I like the special coffee drinks, angel food cake, and ice cream - we had dessert so can't comment on the regular menu but it certainly looked good, with an emphasis on Italian. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! I have never been so disappointed as I was last weekend (Saturday 11/13 at 6:30). First and foremost, you cannot sit diners outside in freezing, cold, windy, rainy weather without HEATERS!!!!! I mean does anyone in the world like to eat dinner at a restaurant shivering and wearing their coat??? Absolutely not!! If you are going to have outdoor dining in winter, since it is now November, then you need to make sure they are going to be warm and comfortable. Decided to visit this place because of the outdoor patio and I expected a bit more. The food was very good for a buffet style. Very Fresh and delicious. Since it was my first time I wasn't too familiar with how everything worked and was a bit lost. The outdoor seating is nice and cozy, very cute for eating outside and enjoying the day. Was a last minute decision to go to the Black whale And this was 15 minutes before they closed it happened to be my birthday and my friends wanted to take me out for some dessert so they called and told them just to have the fondue ready and we will be right over just a quick get together even though we were hanging out all day together but the black whale is an exceptionally unique place to be it's located in city Island middle of the island it has a very calm and relaxing atmosphere outside in the garden if you decide to eat out there their main food is excellent also I recommend this place to anybody to try it at least once in your lifetime read more

Only been for weekend brunch and the only thing to give is a "Whale of a WOW!" They go all in here on City Isle with scads of all you can eat fully fresh breakfast foods. Baked, broiled, blanched...what ever. Come early and with an appetite as they add and subtract items as the morning moves on. Wait an hour and it's a near completely different spread! Crème brûlée anyone? Fresh! I have it there to get some before it's gone. Downers? Next to none. Seating indoors is a bit cramped and can be a bit cold and windy with the occasional twig and leaf falling on your plate. And the coffee is weak and tasteless...but really, who gives a floating f^ck? Hubby had the shrimp entree- comes with rice and string beans- he liked it! Our server, Luna was super friendly and last but not least, the food, delicious. The complimentary garlic bread with cheese, olives and garbanzo beans was a great start. Then we had the guacamole , chips and grilled shrimp: yummm. For our mains: we had Panko crusted cod, penne vodka, the starving artist and a quesadilla with shrooms and sundried tomatoes. This is an incredibly friendly and cozy venue. It is well designed and they have both a backyard and a side room for events. They welcomed our group of 25 with open arms and made sure we had an amazing experience. We will all be back. They have great sangria, both white and red, and their menu is diverse and eclectic. The really nice looking patio out back was filled, so our party of 13 was seated inside in what basically turned into a private room for us. Service was great . Very attentive & friendly. Never been to city island before. However, my family and I are always trying to find little gems close by. Therefore, my search in Yelp brought up a restaurant The Black Whale. A little down from the shore but with our small children; we like it like that. Don't get me wrong it was still packed just not so that we had to wait for long period of time, we only waited about 5-7 minutes. Once inside the ambiance was apparent that it felt like a Bread & Breakfast. Once we sat down at a table we were greeted with bread water and olive oil it was the first time my daughter had that combination but she liked it very much! Our order was steak, vegetables and mashed potatoes plus grilled chicken salad that had pecan, raisin, blue cheese, mixed greens and the children had chicken nuggets with french fries. Lastly me and my wife had a couple beers we was tasting we couldn't decide so my point is the whole total came up to under $75 normally we go out we spend $100 or more this was perfect dinner and the steak was larger than any stakes llwe had from any other restaurants. Decided to try this place after I saw a groupon. Never have been to City Island, I figured what the hell. The Black Whale is a quint little spot with indoor seating and outside garden seating. We opted for the garden. It was a nice set up and the staff provided bug repellent when requested. Thought that was a nice touch! We ordered two apps, muscles in white wine garlic broth and tomato, fresh mozzarella, red pepper salad. The mussels were great and by far, the largest I have ever eaten in even the best seafood restaurants. While the tomato mozz red pepper salad was large enough to feed a party four, it lacked flavor. Perhaps a tad more balsamic vinegar would have done the trick. For the main the course I had the Gazpacho Shrimp with black beans which was delish! The husband had the steak which he said tasted good, since I don't eat meat I didn't try it. For dessert he ordered a brownie sundae which could have fed a party of 4 again! I'm not a fan of vanilla, but he seemed to go to town on that sucka. Over all, the experience was pleasant, prices were VERY reasonable, despite the fact we had a groupon. The wine list was pretty decent as well as the prices. Most expensive bottle was $40.00, the cheapest $21.00 ish,,, serious not bad at all. My lady ordered the ribs with mashed potatoes- why you would order a Turf dish in a restaurant called the Black Whale and situated on an island calling itself "the seaport of the Bronx" I don't understand. Of course I ordered the Linguine with Shrimp, Clams, and Mussels. The waitress asked if I wanted it spicy, and since I'm multicultural and racial, I said of course. My lady thought that was a bad idea. I reminded her that I was an outlier. The wait was a little long for the food, but my dish was worth it. That was one spicy plate of seafood. When my lady looked at the colossal slab of rib on her plate, she asked if she could try my linguine. Of course she could. We both agreed it was spicy... The waitress came and asked if I wanted pepper for the linguine... are you kidding me? It was hella spicy. Just keep filling that glass of water. but getting back to the ribs, after 15 minutes of eating, my lady found string beans ( I think they were string beans) under the meat. I used to love this place but I recently had one of the worst dining experiences of my life here. We went on a holiday without a reservation. We expected to wait and we did which is fine. The people in front of us were offered free champagne and a table outside under umbrellas with heaters because it was drizzling and cold. They declined the offer but I said we would be interested. I was told the offer wasn't for us because the people in front of us had to be seated first. I found this to be very confusing but the hostess was young, unorganized and clearly in over her head so I let it slide. The restaurant was very chaotic that day. When I made it clear that we were willing to go outside despite the rain and bad weather for a third time, they reluctantly took us outside. I was surprised to see it was mostly empty. Most of the people outside were waiting for a table inside and just taking pictures with friends and family. Only two of the tables had diners at them and all the other tables were free. Whatever. I was so glad to have a table, I knew it was a busy holiday, so I was willing to look past everything. We got the weekend buffet option which was fine. My mother doesn't eat pork and she didn't like that some of the vegetarian options were in the same dish as the meat options because the smell transfers to other foods. That's something they might want to look into, but we know it's not a vegetarian restaurant (I mean we're on City Island) so no biggie. She enjoyed the pastries and her veggie omelette and the fresh fruit. Unfortunately, getting anybody's attention for coffee was a complete disaster. We asked two different waitresses and a bus boy for coffee. I understand that it was busy but please don't seat people outside and then completely ignore them. Once we got coffee, we had to wait for milk for ten minutes. We had to send back our coffee twice because it got too cold as we sat and waited for milk. Our entire meal felt incomplete. By the time we got our coffee with milk, we were both pretty much done eating. This was about 30 minutes after we sat outside. At one point I stalked our waitress inside and asked her not to forget about us. There's nothing like washing down bacon and eggs with a cold glass of water... bleh. It should not take 3 servers and 30 minutes to simply get coffee and milk!!!! We were pretty much completely ignored from the moment we entered. No one cared about us that day. We weren't offered the free champagne, we weren't offered the free juice everyone else seemed to be getting, we weren't given the option to sit outside like others were and once we did sit down, we had to beg and plead for milk and coffee. I will never come back here again. It's a disorganized, unapologetic mess. I got the feeling that they did not care for brown people. Will never spend a penny here again. It's a shame too because my in laws have been coming here for over 30 years but those days are clearly over. Another one bites the dust. On top of everything they added an extra $10 to the usual weekend brunch price. What a joke! I would have gone to the diner across the street for a better meal and more attentive service had I known what was in store for us that day. That being said, the overall food and presentation was Oootay, definitely has potential though. We had the steak and shrimp; the steak was chewy and could have been better. Maybe it was our fault that we said medium but stillllll, if they're good chefs, it's good no matter what, no? The clam chowder was good, light, but I would have liked it better if was a little bit more creamy. Just a tinsy. Tilapia stuffed (ok, more like spread on top) with lemon sauce was kinda bizarre. Hadn't been to in almost a year! Called for a reservation so we didn't have to wait for a table. Great Groupon deal lured us in. Tried to look at their menu on their website but the site wasn't working. Decor looked a little grungy this time around and it was particularly dim in the far room they led us to. Service was attentive enough, though the waitress forgot to bring more bread as we requested. Appetizers: fresh mozzarella/tomato plate and chorizo quesadilla. Both good. The quesadilla was filling. Entrees: crab cakes which came with green beans and mashed potatoes, orecchietti with spinach/fresh moz/tomato, beef on Texas toast and fries. All were yummy. Fries didn't seem "homemade" but poured out of a bag of frozen fries - good in an Applebee's kind of way. Mashed potatoes were delicious. Crab cakes lacked big chunks but still very flavorful. Orecchietti was kinda soupy. Large portions all around. Drinks: margarita, sangria, hot chocolate. Again, generous portions but the sangria was watery and lacked flavor! After making 10 am reservations for the Sunday Brunch, so as to arrive early before the bulk of the diners, I found the hostess not understanding and uncaring, resulting in my party having to leave. I came here with a friend a few weeks ago just to get out and enjoy City Island (it has been a year since I've gone) and I wasn't particularly blown away by the service or the food. The tables were out on the curb, and my table, in particular, was close to the parked cars. I wish that the seating arrangement was a bit more classy, like other restaurants I've been to over the pandemic. I ordered shrimp and fries, but I truly believe I could have gotten a better meal at the frozen aisle of my local grocery store. I wasn't a big fan of the free appetizer either. The service left a lot to be desired as well. It took forever to get anyone's attention and when we did, we still had to wait. The prices are a bit too much to not have top-notch service and food. This is not the most expensive spot in City Island, but the food definitely was not worth the price. If you're looking for a place to kick back with your lover, your family, or friends, I'd say find anywhere else. Sammy's which is just around the corner has amazing food, I might add. read more

My wife Pola and I never make reservations for restaurants since we're not responsible enough to keep them - we enjoy the freedom to change our minds, get caught in traffic, and make last minute decisions. Thus on this Mothers Day, we as usual were faced with finding an eatery available to accept us, "off the street" as walk-ins. Turned away by many establishments with lines forming out their doors, we came upon The Black Whale hidden on a darkened corner of City Island, easily overlooked due to how it so easily blends into its residential surrounding. Nevertheless, we did notice it and took a chance luckily finding the place CLOSED but about to open in just 30 minutes. Funny how the Island was packed with restaurants with would-be diners forming lines down Main Street, that we found a place that was only about to open soon! It was amazing to find ourselves in a situation where there was nowhere for us to go, to a place where we'd be the sole guests! And what a place this is... So cozy, so romantic, and quaint, it's perfect for older folks who could appreciate the special old world decor with a seafaring accent. This place is famous for its Sunday Brunch but we were there for dinner so we can't comment on that, but the place closes between 2 and 4 on Sunday so when we arrived at 3:30, we just had to wait 30 minutes to be their first guests on Mothers Day! The chef prepared a special Lamb Stew which was utterly superb. I suggested it's added to the menu permanently because of how good and special it was. We also enjoyed the coconut shrimp appetizer and broiled shrimp dinner, but perhaps the best part was the dessert which consisted of real pistachio ice cream drizzled with Raspberry syrup, chocolate chips, and whipped cream. Even a banana split sundae was available as were many other dessert favorites rarely found on even top shelf restaurants. We also had a cheese cake which also was treated with a helping of strawberries and whipped cream. The beer menu was extensive but incredibly, they have Blue Point Blueberry Ale, an expensive and rarely found ale on any menu. Finding Blue Point's Blueberry Ale, Lamb Stew, and Pistachio ice cream on any menu really placed The Black Whale atop our own favorite place to dine. Oops, I almost forgot to mention the very helpful wait staff including Natasha who went out of her way to accommodate our desires to make our Mothers Day extra special. We'll definitely go back to this hidden little gem again. On a last note, I'd like to say to the other poster who had an opposite review of this place on the same day (Mothers Day) I think it's a bit un-compassionate to give this place such a poor review due to their inability to serve at the previously established time as per their "reservation." Mothers Day on City Island is a nightmare for travelers who have to suffer the bridge that's under construction traffic, not to mention the terrible inclimate weather on that day and the unexpected influx of diners arriving only because they were turned away from other overly-crowed places. This is a SMALL place, and to arrive at 1 p.m. knowing they close at 2 is cutting it pretty close to begin with. I agree taking reservations means the customer should expect to be seated, but the owner told me they had very many cancellations due to the bad weather while at the same time, they were overrun with unexpected guests so for what it's worth, giving a fine place like this a bad review on Mothers Day due to their inability to seat you, isn't justly deserved - the airlines have overbooked seats for decades and at times, some passengers had to be bumped - it's a fact of life and to expect a guaranteed seating for such a large table at such a small place only an hour before closing is overly critical. There were many other forces at work on Mothers Day. I think perhaps it would have been wise to call to confirm the table an hour or so beforehand due to there being so many different factors existing that could affect your late seating. I'm sure they were apologetic to you but I guess that wasn't enough. Perhaps if you arrived an hour EARLY since it's Mothers Day, your table would have been ready. But to show up at exactly 1 p.m. saying, "Here we are!" and expect a table to be waiting for you while there is a line of people out the door and down the block, is definitely presumptuous. read more

Another hidden gem on city island. When ppl think of city island you thing of nothing but seafood. Not this place. It has a great selection of different foods. The staff is friendly. Food is amazing. The place is a charming quaint place to grab a bite to eat. In warmer weather there is an outside seating area as well. The entire place is just a beautiful.
