    two plates of food

The food here was amazing!! My husband and I had mussels and warm bread for appetizers and the broth the mussels were in was soo good! For entrees, my husband had the braised short rib with grilled polenta and I had the salmon with potatoes, peas and green beans...we tried each other's food and they both literally melted in our mouths and were packed with so much flavor! The owner, Kelly and the Executive Chef, Mike were incredibly welcoming! We will definitely be back to try other items on the menu!

    (A) AMBIANCE! The beauty of this 100 year old home is phenomenal. The original hand painted walls and ceilings, original lighting and parquet flooring are exquisite. A rare gem in New Kensington. (B) BRAVO! I ordered the short ribs on a bed of polenta. OMG!!! The BEST I've ever had by far! My friends had the scallops with pumpkin brûlée and the shrimp and butter squash risotto which were also outstanding. (C) The CREW! The wait staff, bartender and chef were friendly and accommodating to our needs. A+++ service all around! (D) DEFINITELY will return for more of the same!!!

Incredible period furniture and mural behind 2 lovelies!

Food is great and so is the atmosphere. It's a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

So here's my MO. Whenever I go somewhere, I always ask the server for a recommendation. Why?…read moreBecause they're the experts! Also, I've a hard time making decisions so I'm cheating! DRINKS: something sweet and or fruit. FOOD: what would you feed a hungry football player? Someone who likes savory/ flavorful dishes but can't do "too spicy." Now that you know, we can continue our tipsy yelping. UPDATE: Butcher and the Rye closed 12/2020 due to covid-19 pandemic's tour of fine dining destruction. The location reopened 12/02/22 as Apres Ski Bar while the Butcher and Rye concept is reignited. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been here before and the food was delicious. It was about 2+ years ago, so I'd be lying if I told you what I ate. However, my subconscious causes my mouth to water when I think about eating here. Make that bit of information what you will. Yesterday I was out for drinks. The night's vict-- server was Erin. She recommended the Snowfall in Montego Bay. She made an excellent recommendation. It was made of a clove infused Jamaican rum, banana, cinnamon, rosemary, honey coconut, and apple cider. The blend of flavors was well-balanced and helped prevent any one flavor dominating the drink. So if you don't like any of the listed ingredients you should be safe to order because they all worked in harmony to prevent offending your palate. In the meantime, I need to make sure to return for dinner again.

The five of us put our name in on the waitlist and proceeded to wait outside. I checked in not too long later and was told we were first on the list to get in. It started pouring rain and they were nice enough to let us wait in the entrance on the sides so that we didn't get soaked. They then proceeded to move us to the side of the bar where the entrance is into Tako, took our drink orders and my friend's card for the tab, and then told us that we would get our drinks and get seated shortly. We waited....then waited....then waited some more. It was not a great spot to put us since staff members kept walking from Butcher to Tako and back. We finally asked them if we could just got sit in Tako and get out drinks there since we were attending an after party there afterwards anyways. They said yes and let us go to the Tako side. After quite some time we got our drinks delivered to us at Tako and they were lazy in my opinion. I absolutely loved Apres Ski Bar and The Lost Cantina (the previous two pop up concepts there this year) so I badly wanted to love Spookeasy but it was not it for me. Pretty much all the drink were just drinks from the Lost Cantina tiki concept with a skull put in it or just a changed name. My friend and I split the Science Fiction Double Feature and it was almost unbearably sweet (although I did appreciate the popcorn container). The Purple People Eater was delightful but it was also That Purple Drink from the Lost Cantina. The Chupacabra drink was exactly the same drink, name and everything from the last concept. I also wanted to like the decor inside Spookeasy since the decor for Apres Ski Bar and The Lost Cantina were phenomenal. The decor for Spookeasy was also lazy. They kept all the Lost Cantina decor and just put skulls, spiders, and bats everywhere. Overall, Spookeasy was just not it for me. I will say it was their opening day when I went so maybe they just need more time to have more creative drinks and decor. But it felt like to me that they're just tired and the pop up bars need to stop (I'm sure it's exhausting to think of new themed drinks and decorations all the time) and it needs to go back to the regular Butcher and the Rye.

I've heard so many mixed things that I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed every aspect of my experience. It kind of has dive bar vibes but the food and drink options are definitely on the elevated side. They open at 4 on Sundays and I got there around 4:15. It was already pretty busy (and by the time I was leaving, every single table and bar stool were occupied). They have standard booth seats along the windows, hightop tables in the middle and bar seating along the bar that curves along the back of the restaurant. I chose to sit at the bar since I was by myself. I was promptly greeted by the bartender. They don't hand you copies of the menu, you have to scan the QR code to access. It is easy to read and follow with sections for drinks, specials (this time they were Wicked themed as a nod to the show at the Benedum) and a sushi section. I ordered the street corn dip. The chips were a bit overcooked and the dip was just OK. I thought it was pricey for what you got. The star of my meal, though, was the patty melt. It had the burger, a bacon jam, caramelized onions and was absolutely delicious! It was served with fries. I considered ordering sushi but wasn't sure what to expect. The patrons sitting on either side of my ordered rolls and they were a nice size and looked delicious, so that is something I would consider ordering in the future. It was a place I'll likely be back to because of the proximity to the theater (although their prices definitely reflect that). Just note how crowded it always is and give yourself plenty of time if you plan on heading here for dinner before the show.

It was like the customer was an afterthought. We had been there many times without incident, that is why we decided on your restaurant for a birthday dinner. None of us have talked about our experience as wonderful. I ordered the scallops, which I periodically cook for myself, and these were horrible. I've never in my life tasted scallops that seemed to be either marinated in some type of brine or simple vinegar. I still do not understand how they were prepared, only that I am grateful that I did not get sick. I am not sure what has happened to your menu, but we were disappointed with our experience last evening. It was telling, that on Father's Day, the parking lot was not very full. We made a reservation for a birthday celebration, because we knew it was Father's Day and were concerned about being able to get a table. I'm not sure we're going to be back anytime soon unless you change what we experienced.

Both were average, nothing special. My friend had a lamb slider and roasted Brussels Sprouts. She said the slider was okay and she let me share the Brussels Sprouts which I thought were over roasted to the point of being charred. To be fair, we chose inexpensive dishes. Maybe if we had opted for some of the pricier entrees like filet or salmon, we would have had better meals. The drinks however were very good. My peaches in a barrel was boozy and delicious. I only wish the delicious bing cherry was floating on top instead of buried under the ice. Her lavender mule was light and refreshing. She thought there was a bit too much ice which made it difficult to finish the drink without sucking through the stirrer. But we both gave higher marks for the drinks over the food. It was a breezy summer evening so we sat on the front porch where we had a freshly laundered cloth placed on our table before seating us there. This building is beautiful both inside and out and enjoyed being able to sit outside and take in the Ligonier street scene. We were served by Rusty, the bar manager, and he was very nice and attentive. He came back to ask about both the drinks and then later about the food. This is a whiskey bar primarily, so go there for a great cocktail. The food is a little pricey and not really worth it. There's many better restaurants around if you're a foodie. But it is a fantastic atmosphere and has a good stiff drink.

I realize sugar is the main food group around these parts, but it does not belong in a Caesar salad or a sausage and bean soup. Surely, any decent chef would know this. Apparently, the chef takes their leftover sweet rolls and makes croutons out of them and then throws them on top of everything. We also tried the smoked gouda French onion grilled cheese. My idea of a grilled cheese is a crispy, buttery outside with tons of gooey, melty cheese inside. Not this one. There was a barely visible slice of gouda on the bottom and a thin slice of some yellow cheese on the top of a big scoop of onions inside of two big slabs of white bread that didn't seem to have been cooked at all. I could have made a really delicious one at home, with zero culinary training.
