I was really disappointed, especially after seeing so many great reviews here. We went on a Sunday, and the place only had about 4 tables with people and a few at the bar. We had to flag down our waiter. He never refilled our drinks, and didn't come ONCE to check after he brought our food to see if we were okay. The food is okay, if you don't really know anything about Mediterranean cuisine and want to settle for something other than Mexican, yet the service was horrible. All in all, we were never brought our check, so we had to get it ourselves. The girl who printed it out was very sweet, but she handed the check to us without a pen. The blue onion is a valley favorite. For good reason. Their flat bread and dips should be considered a valley icon by now. The flat breads are very similar to pita but blue onion grills them and puts a drizzle of olive oils and sprinkle of salt on them. Great flat bread. They have some of the best hummus around. The goat cheese with roasted garlic is a garlic lover's delight. Maybe too overpowering but you order it anyway. You know what you're getting into. The roasted red pepper sauce is so not what you're thinking when you see it. You're thinking it looks like tomato sauce. However, one taste and you know it's not that. It's the sweetness of the red bell pepper along with a little hint of bell pepper bitterness that strikes a perfect balance on your tongue. Definitely a favorite of mine. One can make a whole meal out of the dips alone. Why can't dip be dinner? Anyways, blue onion uses that same pliable, wonderfully delicious flatbread for its sandwiches. You also have the choice to use a French bread roll. It really depends on the type of sandwich you're ordering. If you go with gyro, choose the flat bread. There's a certain shrimp selection that I would go with the French bread to help soak up the sauce. It's all up to you. My 3 personal favorite sandwiches here are the Colorado with chicken, Las Flores with beef fajitas and the gyro. All on the flatbread. The Colorado with the red pepper sauce and goat cheese hits all the umami flavors for me. The las Flores is a twist on local valley tacos. The use pecan smoked beef fajita. The beef is tender and has a great mild smoke flavor. Love it. The gyro is well a gyro. But Blue Onion uses decent meat. Make their own dressing and has a great fresh taste to it that's hard to find locally. Everyday, the Onion has a different soup. And to be honest, I'm not a big soup guy. Not a fan of soup. Not menudo. Not caldo de res. Not clam chowder. Not pho. Not ramen Not tortilla soup. Well I do like tortilla soup. Maybe I am a soup guy. Maybe I'm just realizing it. Nah. Screw soup. Soup is how they get ya. Lol. Seriously if you're a soup fan then you probably already know about the soups at blue onion. Maybe you should write a review about them. I'll just say they're good. Well. I think that's a good place to end this review. Blue Onion has been around a long time. The menu has just been updated to add more dips but the main menu stays the same. It's solid. It's good. Among the best local restaurants, both the Weslaco and Mcallen locations don't disappoint. To begin, their flatbread is light with a good chew, pairing well with the salad but even better with the dips you can share as an appetizer. Pizza is light because the same flatbread is used for it, good to share as an alternative to the hummus/flatbread dips. The salad is very good in comparison to other a la carte salads from other restaurants. Greens are all green and leafy, not watery and come with an array of dressing and protein choices. Don't need too much dressing to taste it through everything, with sunflower seeds adding texture and different proteins cooked well/easy to eat. I honestly had really high expectations for The Blue Onion since it seemed to be a lot of locals' favorite place, but I thoroughly disappointed. My friends and I waited more than 50mins, our waitress would disappear for 30 min periods , AND the bowl our salad came in had food stains, meaning that it was not washed thoroughly. Definitely my most frequented restaurant in McAllen, Blue Onion has yet to disappoint. It's great for a lunch date or dinner, the servers are friendly, and the atmosphere is artsy and casual. I'm also in LOVE with their salads (try the ROASTED VEGGIE SALAD WITH FETA), which are served in massive bowls with spring greens, tomato, cucumber, green onion, sunflower seeds, and roasted veggies. This is one of my favorite restaurants in McAllen. The ambiance is excellent and even when it's busy, it doesn't feel crowded or insane. More than once (today included), I've seen the owners wandering around, checking on the tables, making sure that everything is satisfactory. Local artwork adorns the walls...tonight they were abstracts. This is also the first place in McAllen that I discovered to have Fat Tire. They serve a variety of flat breads, wraps, poboys, pizzas, calzones, salads, desserts, and random specials each day. There's also a "meal in a bowl" for each day. The side dish offerings are SPECTACULAR! I have a penchant for the black bean salad and the marinated cucumbers...yum! You get the two sides of the day with your choice of entree. With all the selections, the menu is laid out pretty simply. The pizzas and calzones are together, as are the wraps and poboys. You just select which one you like from the list, and then specify how you want it made (in a pizza or calzone, wrap or poboy). This evening I opted for the Pesto Chicken Wrap. It was awesome...as is everything on their menu. There was a perfect balance of pesto to everything inside the wrap...the sides topped it off perfectly. My friend had a Pecan grilled burger, which was the special of the day. He's not one to get too excited about food, but he said that it was easily the best burger he'd ever had! Prices are to be expected, as well. It's not too incredibly pricy, but you definately get what you pay for...probably more than what you pay for. The GOOD: Our server Lucia was really great- she was very friendly and helpful. The BAD: there was a piece of completely raw chicken in our calzone. No exaggeration here. Raw, pink, uncooked chicken in our calzone. We're visiting from out of town so we're hoping that we are not dealing with food poisoning the entire way back. Lucia was very apologetic and gave us a free desert and comped the entree. The UGLY: the open kitchen in view had a few cooks that didn't even flinch when Lucia went over to communicate what had happened. They clearly don't care about food safety at this establishment. Finding great food in the Valley that isn't fried or dumb-downed Mexican (for snowbird palates) is difficult. Really difficult. That's where Blue Onion comes in! They have two locations (McAllen and Weslaco), making it convenient as well. Their menu is mostly pizzas (or calzones), sandwich-type things, and salads. They have a lot of variety, though. Their in-house grilled flatbread is delicious, and when you get a flatbread wrap, you can substitute a full-size salad for the sides at no surcharge. This place is fresh and healthy while also being delicious. Score! p.s. for any birdwatchers reading this, we found green parakeets roosting in the trees outside the McAllen branch at sunset, along with throngs of blackbirds. read more

The dip was on a smaller container half full plus some flat bread. The portion size was ridiculous for the price, and it was bland and bitter. I had to add spices to make it enjoyable. I also got an order of flat bread as the order page said it was required. The flat bread was very good. The shrimp and feta salad was good, but too many pine nuts. The beverage selection is broader than could be expected. The ice tea is interesting. I have enjoyed the food for years. The service is usually a step or two above most valley restaurants. Our recent visit was typical. A very energetic and eager server working hard. There was a minor mistake with our order and it was solved quickly and without any fuss. So why only four stars? What had always been lacking here is the restaurant itself. There is no entrance area, instead I always feel like I am intruding in someone's space. It is much worse when there is a wait for a table. My waitress, Geena, was the coolest person I've met in South Texas. After some careful browsing I opted for the Colorado pizza and added chicken and shrimp. So simple, and so delicious.
