We have been going to the Blue Ox for years. Our original meal dates back to the previous owner Matt. That said the current owners are very smart business people that must live by the adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The quality of the food preparation has not changed much if at all, still some of the best meals that you can get North of Boston. I would tell you what we order but there is not a bad meal on the menu, it's all great though salmon and Bolognese are my go to meals. The service though a lot of change post Covid still has some of the original people like Dawn and Matt and is excellent. We typically choose Dawn as she is not only great at her job but she has become a good friend also. The atmosphere is the same usually very busy and can be noisy but that is what happens when you have great food the place fills up every night. This is by far our #1 go to when my wife and I are not on the Cape. read more

I miss the old Blue Ox!!! The food has declined since 2021. I miss the old bartenders! I went for dinner an early evening dinner. There weren't a lot of customers in the restaurant; therefore, I would think the food would be exceptional. The wine was great. I ordered the Grilled Marinated Hanger Steak. I received a full plate of unseasoned fries; the asparagus were very good. I asked for medium rare steak and received very rare and no seasoning. There was so much unseasoned chimichurri sauce on top of the steak that you couldn't see the steak. Will not go back anytime soon, if ever. read more

For starters we ordered the Spicy Tuna Tartare cucumber, cilantro, scallion, chive cream, Ox chili sauce, house made potato chips and the Signature Ox Wings Cajun rub, Ryan & Wood oak smoked, honey hot sauce, blue cheese tarragon dressing. I don't think I've had better Tuna Tartare. So so good. And the chicken wings- excellent. We also split the Classic Caesar Salad crisp romaine hearts, garlicky croutons, Ox Caesar dressing, Parmigiana. Which was decent. For meal I had the Rigatoni Bolognese pork, beef, & lamb ragout, garlic, toasted rosemary, touch of cream, Parmigiano and my friend had the Grilled Marinated Hanger Steak Ox herb French fries, grilled asparagus, salsa verde . We decided to share and devoured the Bolognese. The steak was good but little tough. But also it's prob the type of meat it was. The French fries that came with it though. I was in the area and decided to try this place and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Food: from a glance at the menu, the menu looked quite basic. Seafood, burgers, salad etc. However everything came out amazing. I ordered the wings, salmon and bread pudding (i think?) for dessert. The wings were just perfect. They were crunchy and the sauce had the perfect amount of kick. If you can not handle spicy I recommend staying away. The salmon also came out in a decent sized portion. The dessert wasnt your typical bread pieces overly soaked in a sauce. It was the best I have ever had and came with a gigantic scoop of ice cream. Service: ryan was our guy and he was amazing. He made a great recommendation for a sour beer and he was so knowledgeable about the art of cooking. I used to love this restaurant. But things are much different now and I hear it's new ownership, but not sure. I would consider returning for wings and beer, but not much else. Pros: - vast beer and wine selection; interesting cocktails - Generous wine pours - tremendously flavorful wings (I ordered them well done) - good homemade chips - great server - parking Cons: - the prices are high for what you get. My friend's hanger steak was tiny - the tuna tartar was like chips and onion dip with some Asian-inspired tuna on top. A very odd combo. It takes pretty good, but for $20, I really just wanted to taste tuna (it was overwhelmed by other dense flavors) - prices in general were high. A salad with salmon on it was $32 - the bolognese was very different and not in a good way. Too Al dente and not appealing to look at. It was ok, but there are way too many great ones out there to order this here Basically, the only amazing thing was the wings. read more

Sadly this has gone down hill. The tuna wasn't sushi grade and all the bartenders we loved for years are all gone. They own other restaurants and Tonno in Gloucester is the best. We tried the Blue Ox a few years ago and loved it- but a pandemic got in the way of coming back until this week. We came in for dinner on a Thursday evening- there was a pretty large crowd when we arrived but it cleared out soon afterward due to an event at the Auditorium up the road. Space is great with high ceilings, exposed brick posts and a homey modern look. Our server was fantastic, knowledgeable and super friendly during dinner. She was the right amount of friendly without being all over us during the meal. For a smaller restaurant the wine and cocktail list is top notch. I enjoyed two of the Manhattans- great pour and great flavor. The food was incredible. My partner ordered the chopped salad with chicken and it was chock full of all the best ingredients. Incredibly filling. I ordered the rib-eye special with onions, a homemade garlic butter and sautéed onions. Dessert options looked great but we overate and had to call it. We will definitely be back sooner than 3 years from now. read more

I went to Blue Ox last night with my family. We were 6 adults and young 6 children. The food and service were amazing. We started with a few apps - lobster tacos, steamed mussels and brie. Some of the main dishes we got were roasted eggplant risotto, shrimp scampi, grilled salmon. Everyone raved about their food. The wait staff was friendly, caring, and patient. I chose to come back here a 2nd time cause their tuna tartare is yummy. Tried their pork chop and it was juicy and good. Fries were ok. Waited awhile for my martini to come. I've reviewed TBO before and have certainly had very good experiences here. This time things were a little different. A lot of this had to do with the service we received, it was just not up to par. The details. We got water right away but sat at our table for 15 minutes before our server asked us for a drink order. After that, it was about 10 more minutes before our server asked for our order. Now we have been here for 30 minutes and I have nothing but water and drinks. If I wanted cocktails I may have stopped at the bar before sitting down. Starters were delicious. Tuna Tatar, a very healthy sized serving was tasty and spicy served with homemade photo chips, thin and salted, yum. The tuna was perched on top of cream cheese. Next time I will get this as a dinner. We also had the Brie and fig. Again, this was fantastic, served with grilled bread, and deliciously garlicky. There was a side salad, it would make a meal itself as well. Here's where trouble started and I am not being overly picky, my wife and I both worked in restaurants and we are paying a lot of money ($45.00 for my steak) for dinner. When the server was picking up the Brie plates two small pieces of lettuce fell directly on into the table in front of my wife. Usually someone would swipe this while they clean up. This guy noticed it and moved on. This became a thing. She: I'm not moving this. He needs to do his job. Me: I am sure he is comming back to get it and clean the table up. She: He saw it when he took the plates and left it. Me: Maybe he did not have a cloth, but I bet he is comming back to get it. Nope, he came back to ask if we wanted drinks, lettuce sitting on the tiny table for two right in front of him. He does nothing. I know this is long, if you got this far thank you. I clean the lettuce. My wife got the salmon, over some beans, I guess I did not realize how heavy they are with spice here but it had a very Indian taste, a little strong for most people. As I said. I got a $45.00 ribeye with a compound butter and frites. Frites good. Steak cooked just right. The butter was awful. I guess I should have listened more carefully to the description perhaps I would have been warned. It had such a powerful spice I could not eat it. I was thinking someone switched the tops to the spice jars. Honestly when I took my first bit unexpected, thinking something sweet to contrast the savory steak and I almost choked. That spice sat at the back of my tongue and pretty much ruined my dinner. To be honest I was not that hungry at that point since the appetizers were so damn good and they were very large. The server recovered slightly when he helped pick a desert martini. But it was to late for him. We are standard tippers starting at 20% for service then rounding up for the good stuff. We rounded down on this one and he got just below 20%. 18.5 or so...not bad on top of $140.00 dinner. Still a go to place. Everything has its ups and downs! read more

This place got a hold of the Craigie on Main and Alden and Harlow playbook for creating a great burger that very few people can actually get. If these places were car dealerships they would all be accused of bait and switches. Bottom line, Saturday night @8pm, no sin burger or any other burgers left. Waitress says this happens every week but they don't make more because they are worried they will "waste" the burgers. Seems like an interesting excuse considering that ground beef may be one of the most versatile items in a kitchen. Instead the far more plausible reason is they don't make as much (or charge as much) for the burgers than they do for every other item on the menu, including half their appetizers. So they bring you in for their burger and then sell you everything else. The other food, however, is good. Not amazing, but overall solid and well-prepared. The sweet potato wedges are a stand out. So if you want everything else on the menu, def check out Blue Ox. If you want the burger, maybe call ahead? read more

Tried it for the first time tonight after hearing good things. Menu is fairly small but there is something for everybody. I got the Sin Burger which was very tasty, the truffle sauce was a nice topping. The portion of fries they served was very generous. Drinks were strong, I recommend the Lavender Lemonade.
